James Comey: President Biden should not ‘pursue a criminal investigation of Trump’

U S WASHINGTON D C FBI FORMER DIRECTOR JAMES COMEY HEARING

James Comey is a C-U-Next-Tuesday. I don’t use that word for all of my enemies, but I think it’s completely warranted for Jim Comey. Comey was the FBI Director who decided to crash the 2016 election just weeks before Election Day to announce a probe into But Her Emails. He violated the FBI’s protocol by doing so. Then for his trouble in openly helping Donald Trump get elected, Comey also oversaw an investigation into all of the early Trump-Russia connections. That’s when Trump fired him and that’s when Robert Mueller was appointed as the special counsel. To hear Comey tell it, he too is a Trump victim. He believes he stands for justice (he does not) or the rule of law (nope), and he’s absolutely a legend in his own mind. Well, Comey has a new book coming out and Comey thinks – wait for it – that the Biden-Harris administration shouldn’t bother investigating all of Donald Trump’s crimes, or the Trumpland Crime Syndicate.

Donald Trump should not be prosecuted once he leaves the White House no matter how much evidence has been amassed against him, the former FBI director James Comey writes in a new book. The next US attorney general, under Joe Biden, should not “pursue a criminal investigation of Donald Trump”, Comey writes, “no matter how compelling the roadmap left” by the special counsel Robert Mueller, or “how powerful the evidence strewn across his history of porn stars and financial fraud”.

“Although those cases might be righteous in a vacuum,” Comey writes, “the mission of the next attorney general must be fostering the trust of the American people.”

That opinion is likely to surprise many – perhaps including Trump himself – as Comey has emerged as a powerful critic of Trump and has been the frequent target of threats and insults from the 45th president. Comey’s new book, Saving Justice: Truth, Transparency and Trust, is his second and will be published on 12 January. The Guardian obtained a copy.

Comey’s high profile since leaving government has earned him as many critics as supporters and his new book will be closely examined. He writes that it is for “ordinary citizens, not legal experts or historians”, and is meant to be a guide to rebuilding institutions battered by Trump. Biden will be inaugurated on 20 January but has not yet named his nominee for attorney general. The former deputy attorney general Sally Yates, who briefly led the department while Comey led the FBI and was also fired by Trump, is among reported frontrunners. So is the former Alabama senator Doug Jones.

[From The Guardian]

This is so asinine and infuriating, I barely have words. First of all, intelligent and decent politicians can do many things all at once – they can investigate and prosecute Trump for his high crimes and misdemeanors AND foster trust with the American people. Some might even argue that prosecuting Trump would be one of the best ways to foster trust, to show that no one is above the law, and that we’re not going to ignore the blatant criminality and abuse of office just because Trump has violent white supremacists on his side.

I’d also like to continue to make this argument, because it has become more likely as we get closer to the inauguration: Biden might not have a choice. His DOJ might not have a choice. I kind of believe that President Biden doesn’t want to start his presidency by investigating his predecessor, but the Biden DOJ *will* have independence, and there was so much open, blatant criminality in the Trump Era, it’s difficult to believe that everyone in Justice or the FBI will just ignore it. The answer for Biden might be the appointment of one or several special prosecutors to investigate different aspects of the Trump criminal empire. That way, the special prosecutors can work in peace and quiet, unconnected to the Biden administration’s daily activities. So, no, the answer is NOT the Comey method, which is “let treason sh-tbirds and wannabe gangsters get away with everything because we don’t want to hurt their suckbaby loser feelings.”

Yeah, let it all go so the next one (Tom Cotton) sees what he can get away it. That’s a GREAT longterm plan.

    Shut up fool.

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

NOPE! NOPE! NOPE!!! Traitorous, Seditious Don broke EVERY LAW in office: extortion, bribery, Hatch Act…he is the MAIN REASON 358 THOUSAND people are DEAD, and millions more will have lingering health problems for the rest of their lives. He and his henchmen cohorts caused 10s of MILLIONS to lose their livelihood. LET HIM GO??? F#CK NO!!!

Same thing for all these republiTHUGS coming out “against” this certification call today. You want to “let them be” for coming out on deck to stand on the very tip of the ship that hasn’t sunk from hitting the iceberg?? Oh just screw that…and them!! THEY ARE SEDITIOUS TRAITORS!!! EVERY SINGLE ONE NEEDS TO BE VOTED OUT!!

      • marehare says:

All Trump’s need to answer to their crimes along with Kushners, et all GOP who supported and aided and abetted the Trump crimes. They are traitors to our country.

    • whatWHAT? says:

I believe your last line sums it up perfectly.

it is IMPERATIVE that he is prosecuted for any and all crimes. otherwise, why should anyone be arrested or prosecuted for anything? anarchy, b*tches.

    • Korra says:

I think Josh Hawley will be looking to steal Tom Cotton’s thunder. And if not them, there will be others. This isn’t a matter of a few bad actors, this problem is systemic and wide-reaching. We need to root it out while we can. Investigate, prosecute and shine a light on the corruption!

  2. Amy Bee says:

Are people still listening to Comey? I hope not.

    • HoofRat says:

That last time he opened his no-account mouth, he helped throw democracy into a death spiral. Shut. Your. Face. You. Tiresome. Ass.

  3. Sequinedheart says:

    Ohhhh Comey, staaaaahp!

  4. nettie says:

He had a large part to play in getting the fool elected. No wonder he doesn’t want to see a criminal investigation.

    • Snazzy says:

Exactly this. Any investigation will see his own complicity and potentially criminal behaviour come to light

  5. LightPurple says:

New AG Sally Yates should absolutely proceed to prosecute Trump for the crimes detailed in the Mueller Investigation and those for which he was impeached involving the “perfect phone call” to Ukraine. Meanwhile, Georgia should prosecute him for election tampering and New York should prosecute him for a broad range of offenses. Nagini too should be prosecuted. First Daughter is not a thing. She stole hundreds of millions from us with her illegal princess act.

    • Ainsley7 says:

There is also a lot of signs pointing to the GOP using dominion voting machines as cover for what they did with ES&S voting machines. There are ballots in Kentucky that vote for both Trump and the democrat Amy McGrath. Split ballots against Trump make sense. Split votes the other way make zero sense. There are other issues in other states and they all used ES&S machines every time they come up. That really needs to be looked into.

    • Lillyfromlilooet says:

      +1

    • Rapunzel says:

LP- CNN saying Biden will nominate Merrick Garland for AG! Lolz for days if Garland gets to prosecute the Republicans that wouldn’t even give him a hearing for SCOTUS. Get Mitch, Merrick!

      • Becks1 says:

I am LOVING the timing of the announcement. Biden waits until he knows he has the senate and then hes like TAKE THIS MCCONNELL!!!!

  6. Jane Doe says:

    This man is an op

  7. Oy_Hey says:

Yeah. No. This last four years of craziness and the 10 years of republican nonsense that enabled it has to be answered for. Full Stop. Otherwise they’ll pick a crazy populist racist who’s less obviously crazy and they’ll get away with it.

Civility is the GOP’s tool to continuing criming. Don’t let them.

  8. vertes says:

I hope dt gets slapped with warrants from SDNY the minute he leaves the White House. Actually, I hope that he’s forcibly carried out of the WH as a trespasser, which he will be the minute Biden is sworn in.

  9. Snuffles says:

I think Biden is staying quiet until he is sworn in. I predict that he won’t be openly calling for it but he will quietly support it and let the Justice Department and the Attorney General do their job without interference.

PS. I think Biden was waiting on the results of the Georgia run offs before announcing his Attorney General. Now that it looks like Democrats will have control, he can appoint a real attack dog.

    • pottymouth pup says:

the Democrats will also have to be careful to avoid Joe Manchin’s ire. He’s a Democrat in name only & I’m sure the GOP is courting him to switch parties

    • lucy2 says:

I think Biden is going to rightly stay out of it, and let the Justice Department do it’s job without his interference. That’s how it’s supposed to be, and hasn’t been for the past 4 years.
But I’m on board for him appointing someone with teeth, for sure. There’s a lot of crime that needs to be dealt with.

Comey can shut it. He already got his book deal and got to pretend he was above it all, but his actions played a big part in the 2016 election. No one cares what he thinks.

  10. Becks1 says:

I think there is something to be said for moving on, for not establishing a precedent of a new administration investigating the preceeding administration (like Trump kept trying to make Obama-gate and Tape-gate a thing.)

But, that’s not what is happening here. Trump and all his cronies, including his family, committed crimes while in office, and that needs to be investigated. This is not a matter of a new administration not liking what their predecessors did. This is a matter of crimes being committed in plain sight (and can you only imagine the crimes we DONT know about???)

Also, the Trumps are not going to go quietly into the night. We are going to see them in politics for the next 20 years. We need to make sure they answer for their crimes NOW.

  11. Ann says:

He doesn’t want any investigations because he is as guilty as the rest of them. Like we are so stupid and can’t see that. This kind of shit makes my blood boil. Biden needs to pick a strong, aggressive AG and every last trumper fuck needs to face all the consequences they have earned.

  12. Lizzie Bathory says:

Comey can take all the seats. And I agree with Jane Doe above that he’s probably an op.

There’s a through-line from Watergate to Iran Contra to the GWB/Cheney crimes to getting us where we are today (Roger Stone, Bill Barr, etc, etc). Had those been properly investigated & all those involved punished, we wouldn’t have Trump. We can’t afford to sweep this under the rug in the name of civility (which only Dems believe in anyway). The Trump/Kushner family will just keep up looting public funds now that politics is their latest grift.

    • MissMarierose says:

This is correct. Trump and his GOP enablers are perilously close to overthrowing democracy right now. It’s obvious that so much of our democracy relies on politicians with morals adhering to norms. Many in the GOP have shown that they don’t give a damn about democracy, only their own power. And we’re here now because none of their grifting, power-hungry predecessors were held to account in the criminal justice system for their crimes.
This has to stop now and to stop it, they need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

      AMEN to ALL of this!!!!

    • Traveler says:

      Exactly.
It cannot be ignored. All the vulnerabilities that have been exposed need to be addressed slowly but surely starting with significant repercussions for these blatant crimes. What is going to keep this escalation of criminal behavior and erosion of integrity from taking everything down in the future. We saw how the control of one party with little integrity toppled the so-called checks and balances that were put in place to protect the democratic process. It survives but, wow, that was damn close. Definitive changes need to be made. Consequences need to be strong and swift.

  13. rrabbit says:

Unfortunately, with almost half the population still very eager to completely deny any of Donny Three Wifes’ crimes, whatever he will be charged with, whatever actual proof there is, it is highly unlikely that he will be found guilty by a jury. On any jury, there will always be several Trump supporters. Won’t flip all of them.

I thus think that the Biden administration should focus on achieving what can be achieved within the next two years with extremely slim majorities in both the House and the Senate, and leave the prosecution of the former Liar in Chief’s crimes to the states. Investigate, publish evidence, but don’t charge Trump himself. Go after all those henchmen the Trump supporters don’t care about, where a guilty verdict is likely.

Is that fair? No, obviously not. But charging Trump and then not getting a guilt verdict would be worse.

  14. Sean says:

I feel a special rage when I see or hear about Jim Comey. He likes to act like such a noble do-gooder when in reality, he screwed over the country and acted like he was victimized when Trump canned him.

I actually read his ego-stroking book “A Higher Loyalty” when it was first published. He does his best to look like an ethical and partial public servant. Yet, he just came off like a self-promoting a-hole. There’s a part in the book that really made me furious. He recounts a meeting with his subordinates prior to the 2016 election where they’re discussing how to announce their investigation into BUTTER EMAILS and one of his subordinates raises the point that if they’re going to inform the public of the email server investigation, shouldn’t they also tell people about their ongoing investigation into Trump’s ties to Russia (the FBI had been quietly looking into Trump since his 2013 trip to Moscow. This is also part of why Trump fired Comey).

Comey commends the agent for asking “such a great question” but ultimately decided it wouldn’t be wise to tell the public of the probe into Trump’s dealings with Russia as it would destroy the public’s faith in the voting process.

I threw the book across the room.

  15. dawnchild says:

Without cleaning up, there IS no reset.
The rest of the clowns are busy taking notes from the Orange Moron to see what they can get away with as this s**tshow rolls on to it’s
ridiculous, embarrassing, norm-challenging apex of crap today at the joint session of Congress.
So Comey, the great purveyor of truth and justice, can STFU and take many seats

  16. Lemons says:

Will this man ever shut up? My god! He seems to know when exactly we don’t want to hear the word vomit he insists on sharing.

This man is a Republican who is hellbent on protecting his own kind.

  17. Veronica S. says:

There are more than 350,000 Americans dead and thousands more sick and injured who deserve justice for the cruelty of this administration, not to mention the millions of voters in swing states who have had to tolerate voter suppression, accusations of fraud, or outright intimidation. You cannot embolden an enemy to try to get away with worse than what they already have. (Just look at the power games state senators are pulling in my state right now now in Pennsylvania.) Beyond that, it is unacceptable to suggest a president of one of the most powerful countries in the world shouldn’t have to answer to the people for his crimes against them. Biden may not have to do anything if New York gets their hands on him first and effectively so, but if there’s evidence behind the scenes that he sold this country out at the expense of American citizens and people overseas, I want him to answer for it.

  18. Leah says:

Comey needs to knock this crap off. He’s one of the reasons why Trump got in, his 11th hour lie about Hillary’s emails sentenced us to four years of hell.

    Go away Comey.

    • Betsy says:

He’s arguably the main reason that Trump won. All the other elements were in place, but I sincerely don’t think they would have been successful without Comey bleating and butting his head around like an angry cow.

He needs to shut up. Forever. And always. He hasn’t made amends, he just keeps flapping his gums, and all that comes out is dumb.

  19. JanetDR says:

Like anyone gives a rat’s patoot what Comey has to say 😠.

  20. LisaT says:

Its easy to blast Comey. Trump needs to be deprived of oxygen – less media coverage to dilute his Twitter power. Biden doesn’t need Tump commenting on his administration everyday. The best thing to happen would be for NYS to prosecute him. The problem with investigating Trump actions in the White House is where does it end- his abuse of power : at DOJ, pressuring officials (e.g Ukraine, calls to state elections officials), abuse of pardons, intelligence classification or fundraising abuses. A big part of this will also be the preservation of documents for the National Archives. I think the first step is a bipartisan commission should be created to at look the handling of coronavirus pandemic. I think the press/ historians under the FOIA will expose Trump faster.

  21. LittlePenguin says:

Sure, Biden should not pursue a criminal investigation of The Cheeto….because the SDNY is going to start nailing the whole damn family and everyone involved with Cheeto Jan 21. (Or that is my wish)

  22. LisaT says:

Trump has lawsuits coming his way Jan 21st. I’m sure attorneys for Lisa Page and Andy McCabe will be looking to depose Trump in their lawsuits against DOJ. Trump is still Individual 1 in the campaign finance case that Michael Cohen went to jail for.

  23. HaHa says:

Sit down and shut up Comey. No one should be above the law. NO ONE!! Especially someone so blatantly stupid and obvious about breaking them.

  24. margie says:

Who the f*ck cares what this crusty bitch says? NEXT. I’m gonna let the next administration decide, not the douchebag who cost Hilary the election.

  25. Regina Falangie says:

To anyone who says it’s too painful for the American people to go through an investigation and all that entails and that it’s just better to move forward, the same could be said about every horrible thing that had happened to our country. After 9/11 was it too painful???? Yes but we wanted justice and I want justice again!!!!!!! I don’t care how painful the process is, every single fucker who broke a law needs to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law!!!!!!!!! Everyone must be held accountable.

    • Thirtynine says:

Yes. It seems to me the real problem in the US stems from a lack of accountability. So you have people from the President, to police, to private citizens doing whatever suits them and even if it it is called out as illegal, even if there is incontrovertible evidence, there are no consequences or penalties. To regain faith in the law, every crime must be prosecuted according to the law. No second guessing what a jury might say, or thinking it isn’t very ‘nice’ and lets all move forward. That only exacerbates the problem. Surely after today, even the most reluctant to pursue legal action can see where the lack of accountability leads? Do y o u really want to keep going down that road?

  26. Liz version 700 says:

Hell no! I want that orange and his rotting tangerines squashed like a bug. No forgiveness. Jail time!

  28. MJM says:

    I completely agree Kaiser.

  29. Keroppi says:

Do you still think that after today, Comey?!?! What’s a little coup or insurrection among friends?

    • Korra says:

I was just coming here to say the same thing. Jim Comey is the living embodiment of not reading the room and doing so at the worst possible time.

  30. Ms Lib says:

Another traitor, add him to the growing list of unamerican mf morons.
