Lana Condor: even if your partner says no gifts, you must get a gift

The last installment of To All the Boys came out last Friday, To All the Boys: Always and Forever. I haven’t seen it yet. I loved the first movie, as most of you know, but was not wild about the second. So I’ll wait to see what you guys say about this one before I watch it. I appreciate the timing for the premiere, though. Launching it Valentine’s Day weekend is certainly mood appropriate. Lana called in to the The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on the film’s opening night and Jimmy asked about her Valentine’s plans with longtime boyfriend, Anthony De La Torre. Lana said she’d mentioned Valentine’s Day to Anthony recently and he’d obviously completely forgotten about it, so she didn’t have her hopes up about any plans in the making. When Jimmy asked about gifts, Lana’s advice was: always give a gift, no matter what your partner tells you.

On her Valentine’s plans
I mentioned to [my boyfriend] Anthony. ‘Hey babe, Valentine’s Day is coming up this weekend.’ He truly did not remember. When you ask me if I have plans, probably no. I even told him ‘I’ve got you your Valentine’s gift already.’

Jimmy’s wife said no gifts but she’ll get him one
You always have to give a gift. You always. Even if they say no, you must.

On how she feels about the final To All The Boys movie coming out
These movies have given me so many opportunities. There’s a line in the movie where it says ‘I never knew I could feel this sad and this happy at the same time.’ That is exactly how I feel.

Who knows if Lana actually believes gifts are mandatory even if you agreed they weren’t. I suspect she was playing it up for the camera. In general, I don’t agree – if you say no gifts, it means no gifts. But I’m one of those wackos who considers almost anything as a gift, like a bunch of photos of a virtual vacation or a voicemail of your family singing Happy Birthday. I’d prefer doing something fun over an item I don’t really need so I rather the giver save their money (especially if the giver is my husband and the money is our money). But that’s because I like people to pay attention to me more than I prefer gifts. My son prefers presents to attention. My husband would love to be buried in cards with written affection for him. It all has to do with what makes your partner happy. So if they like presents, then yes, always have one. If you spend Valentines with me, though, don’t worry about a gift. But if you offer to do my dishes, we will be forever friends.

Lana has another project for Netflix in the works which sounds really fun. It’s called Boo, Bitch and she’s executive producer as well as star. She, once again, plays a high school senior. Only this time, she’s murdered before she goes forth into the world and spends the series as a ghost. I love weird stuff like that. Plus, I think Lana could totally pull this off. I’m glad she’s got something coming up because Noah Centineo took off from To All the Boys and I wanted to see Lana do the same. I hope this is her moment.

I’m onboard with “no gifts” from time to time. This Valentine’s Day felt like one of those times for me this year. With the pandemic and epic snow storms, we celebrated with a funny movie and some left over wine.

  2. Esmom says:

I agree that no gifts means no gifts. No mind games is even better!

  3. Mel says:

The third movie was really good. I also was underwhelmed by the second one but I found this one is charming. My favorite remains the first one obviously but the series ended nicely.

  4. Sarah says:

I mean, what’s more romantic and loving than disrespecting your partner’s clearly communicates wishes?

  5. Kynesgrove89 says:

I mean it when I say no gifts. My husband never listens to me so I just pick out something that is cheap. Like $7 cheap. It makes me feel like I’m not listened to at all.

  6. Snuffles says:

I enjoyed the movie. Better than the 2nd one but not quite the same magic as the first.

  7. newmenow says:

I don’t know this person or her work. I saw the headline.

IMO, Valentine’s Day and the huge Wedding Industry are both full of BS!

Celebrate your happiness and show your love to your partner in ways that are meaningful to you both. The rest is for show. Yup, I said it. lol

  8. NotSoSocialButterfly says:

My husband at times does this to me- we agree to no gifts and, boom- he violates the pact. It bothers me, but I accept graciously.

  9. Jezebeelzebub says:

Ugh, NO- I hate that old tired ass trope that no sometimes means yes. When I say “no”, that’s exactly what the fuck I mean. It’s not ok for anyone to decide differently- not my man, not my friends, not my mom, not anyone.

That said, “Boo, Bitch” sounds like something I could get into.

  10. Scarlett says:

Ooooh that’s hot. Not listening to your partner’s wishes is always such an aphrodisiac. So hot, no..really….

  11. LizzyM says:

I found the 2nd movie forgettable. The 3rd movie was good in the way that Lana’s character found her voice and did not let herself be defined as someone’s girlfriend or making choices for someone. I thought that was cool but the new movie was not as good as the first one.

On another note, I find Lana so beautiful. She’s stunning naturally and looks like a doll when she’s made up. Her skin is flawless!

  12. Bibi says:

I have a need for nothing. I feel like my life is complete and a gift would be a waste on me. So I prefer attention. however on valentines day or any day, it is such a nice feeling to receive a bouquet of flowers. I say no gifts, but he still gets me flowers and chocolates, but he gets chocolate for me the whole year lol

    • Darla says:

Yeah, same here. On almost any occasion I will always prefer nice flowers and dining out. Except for Christmas. When I really don’t want anything. The things I treasure on Christmas are the hand made cards from my little niece and nephews.

  13. Kate says:

1 – wow to her premiere outfit!
2 – good on you Hecate for knowing your and your family’s love languages! I too am a “quality time” gal
3 – the 3rd movie was better than the 2nd and I had a lot of feels during it, even as a 38-year old woman who was actively hoping against them going to school together. It really took you to that place as a senior when it’s so scary facing your first major life change and going out on your own. Also, the art/visuals weren’t as cutesy as the 2nd movie. Still had that look of the series but it wasn’t as noticeable and distracting. The 2nd movie seemed like every scene had to have a color scheme and it sometimes felt more about the visual than the story sometimes. This one incorporated the visuals into the story really nicely.

  14. Case says:

If they say no gifts, please don’t get them gifts! They won’t have something for you to exchange and will feel horrible.

  15. Isa says:

She looks absolutely amazing in that dress.

  16. emmy says:

Say what you mean, people. If you want gifts, just say it? I wanted to get rid of Christmas gifts within the family years ago and my sister was all NO! We are doing this. We’ll okay then, if it’s important to you. Recently asked my BFF if we could not do birthday gifts this year. I just honestly want/need nothing. She seemed…. fine? I can’t tell but she agreed so she’ll get nothing and frankly, I won’t feel bad if I do. Say. What. You. Mean.

  17. Abby says:

I looooved the first one, thought the second was good enough, and the third had a lot of really good elements. But I was continuously distracted in the third one by Noah’s character having wayyyy over-the-top maturity. It’s just not possibly for a 17 year old/18 year old boy to have the emotional intelligence of a 45 year old man. It just did not compute. I know his character has always had maturity, but this was seriously out of control. Like, yes, at 41 I would love to find a man with that kind of depth, support and committment but COME ON. They just took it to totally unbelievable levels and it irritated me. Also: she is so freaking beautiful!!!
