Ted Cruz blamed his daughters for the Cancun trip, but the text chain exposed his lies

Ted Cruz wears Texas flag mask as he arrives at CanCun airport this morning ahead of flight back to Texas hours after landing in Mexico

Alleged Zodiac Killer and Confirmed Trump Fart-Sniffer Ted Cruz got in “trouble” this week. He was seen at a Texas airport with his wife and children – his two daughters are 12 and 10 years old – and boarding a plane for Cancun, Mexico. Ordinarily, I suppose a trip to Cancun would be noteworthy but not widely reported. The dual problems with this particular story is that Cruz has widely condemned Democrats for traveling and doing *anything* during the pandemic, AND this week Texas, the state Cruz nominally represents as a senator, is facing its own “Katrina.” The GOP-led state has left millions of residents without water, food and electricity following an extreme winter storm. People were left without heat for days. People died. The roads were so bad, supplies couldn’t get dropped off. And all the while, the governor was on Fox News blaming Democrats, and Ted Cruz was jetting off to Cancun.

The Cruz-Cancun story became THE major headline throughout the day Thursday. First, no one could get in touch with Cruz or his Senate staff. Then finally there was a confirmation that he did got to Cancun with his wife and daughters, and then Cruz issued a statement claiming: “With school canceled for the week, our girls asked to take a trip with friends. Wanting to be a good dad, I flew down with them last night and am flying back this afternoon.” He also claimed that his daughters wanted to go to Cancun because their family was without power as well.

What kind of spineless pencild-ck coward throws his CHILDREN under the bus when immersed in a political scandal? “My 10 year old daughter wanted to go to Cancun, and we let her make all of our vacation plans, even in natural disasters!” Now he’s burned his daughter’s political bridges for when she wants to run for office. “Catherine Cruz? Weren’t you the one who wanted to go to Cancun when Texans were freezing to death in their own homes?”

But then the stories kept changing. As Cruz left Cancun – he was greeted by paparazzi, lmao – he said the same thing, that he was just dropping off his wife and kids. The thing is, at the same time, it was being widely confirmed that Ted Cruz didn’t originally have a return flight until Saturday, and he only changed his return flight to Thursday that morning. Then it got even better:

Like millions of his constituents across Texas, Senator Ted Cruz had a frigid home without electricity this week amid the state’s power crisis. But unlike most, Mr. Cruz got out, fleeing Houston and hopping a Wednesday afternoon flight to Cancún with his family for a respite at a luxury resort.

Photos of Mr. Cruz and his wife, Heidi, boarding the flight ricocheted quickly across social media and left both his political allies and rivals aghast at a tropical trip as a disaster unfolded at home. The blowback only intensified after Mr. Cruz, a Republican, released a statement saying he had flown to Mexico “to be a good dad” and accompany his daughters and their friends; he noted he was flying back Thursday afternoon, though he did not disclose how long he had originally intended to stay.

Text messages sent from Ms. Cruz to friends and Houston neighbors on Wednesday revealed a hastily planned trip. Their house was “FREEZING,” as Ms. Cruz put it — and she proposed a getaway until Sunday. Ms. Cruz invited others to join them at the Ritz-Carlton in Cancún, where they had stayed “many times,” noting the room price this week ($309 per night) and its good security. The text messages were provided to The New York Times and confirmed by a second person on the thread, who declined to be identified because of the private nature of the texts.

For more than 12 hours after the airport departure photos first emerged, Mr. Cruz’s office declined to comment on his whereabouts. The Houston police confirmed that the senator’s office had sought their assistance for his airport trip on Wednesday, and eventually Mr. Cruz was spotted wheeling his suitcase in Mexico on Thursday as he returned to the state he represents in the Senate.

After landing back in the United States, Mr. Cruz offered a new statement with a different tone from earlier in the day, when he had tried to explain the vacation without regrets and left the impression that it might have always been a one-day trip for him. Speaking to reporters after his arrival home, he conceded that the trip was “obviously a mistake” and said he had begun having “second thoughts” as soon as he boarded the plane to Mexico intent on a few days of remote work in the sun.

“The plan had been to stay through the weekend with the family,” he said, framing the decision as a parent’s attempt to placate his two daughters, ages 10 and 12, after a “tough week.”

[From The NY Times]

Who in Heidi Cruz’s text chain gave the texts to the NY Times? I’m obsessed. Notice the neighbors/friends didn’t even go to a local Texas paper like the Houston Chronicle or anything – nope, straight to the Times. So, yeah, Ted Cruz is a liar, his friends hate him, he jetted off to Cancun because he was mildly inconvenienced and he left Texans to die. He also left his family poodle Snowflake inside the house?? WTF?

I need updates on the poor puppy’s welfare. Who leaves their pets in a situation like this???

    • Elizabeth says:

I know!!!! The house is freezing so you abandon your dog there?!

    • TeamAwesome says:

Thank you. If there was any doubt what a POS he is (there is not, obv) this would seal the deal.

    • Darla says:

If anything does get Cruz, it’ll be the dog. Dogs matter so much more than people in this country.

      • Wiglet Watcher says:

Apparently even dogs don’t matter to Cruz.

      • Golly Gee says:

Yes!! In 2024 voters need to be reminded about the Cruz’s pet poodle being callously abandoned in a freezing house.

      • Traveler says:

No one expects everyone to feel the same but I can’t understand resenting people being concerned over the life of a vulnerable and totally dependent creature.
I love animals and would go to bat for any animal and I absolutely would and have done the same for any and all mistreated people. It is not one or the other.

      • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

        @ Wiglet Watcher-
I’d expect nothing more from the SOCIOPATH that he is.

    • Ann says:

Apparently he left it with a security guard. Also, the dog’s name is Snowflake, which I find amusing.

    • Bibi says:

Unacceptable to leave a dog behind. It’s like a 2 year old baby. Oh boy is PETA going to get him. As he derserves. Hypocrit traitor deserter pencild*ck

      • H says:

I hope the Democratic party runs ads that feature Snowflake in them reminding Texans that a guy who abandons their dog, will abandon them too. Who leaves their dog in a “freezing” house? POS.

      • UptownGirl says:

@ H, they had better run ads as this will be a sore for Texans that he abandoned purposely. He had no second thoughts, what utter BS!! That back was packed full and his wife clearly stated that they were all going. His return was due solely to the backlash, nothing more. In addition, Mexico has one the highest rates of coronavirus infection rates and any traveler returning to the US must quarantine for 7 days, then provide a negative test. Get this, that POS sat in first class as his family sat in coach too!!!
He has no moral code or and is a disgusting POS!
It’s lovely that Beto stepped in and took action this week. Given what Beto has done and that he lost to Cruz 51% to 49% shows that Cruz’s days are numbered!

    • Ann says:

I live in Houston and know at least one person who was at his house protesting yesterday. She has a kid at the same school. I imagine she is not the only parent there who can’t stand Cruz. My guess is that some of these “friends” on the group text are more like friendly acquaintances, or parents of their kids’ friends, not people who actually like Heidi and Ted. And I’m not that surprised that he/she leaked it right to the NYT. These are St. Johns parents. It’s arguably the most prestigious school in Houston, a lot of highly educated, intellectual and politically interested parents. They know how to get the word out what trash these people are.

      • BearcatLawyer says:

I live near him, and trust me – they have a lot more enemies than they realize. We get regular updates from the neighbourhood patrol when protests are planned/erupt near his house. Basically, most of my neighbours and I treat these e-mails and voice mails as reminders to hustle over there and chant!

      • Size Does Matter says:

Hi ladies. I need to know from your insiders. Does CancunCruz have a live-in who was taking care of Snowflake? Or did he literally abandon that poor animal? This detail about the family pet is sending me over the edge.

      • sassafras says:

So on the top of the Heidi Cruz texts you can see the text chain is called [Redacted] Lovelies. A reporter who’d seen the unredacted part said it referred to their street. So she has a text chain of all the “lovelies” in the hood and literally a neighbor sold them out. It’s amazing.

      • flickerfarkle says:

        Size Does Matter:

The person who took that photo said that there was a security guard who was looking after the dog. However, they left him in an unheated house.

      • Holly hobby says:

I think some of the school folks sent a copy of the back to school agreement to the nyt. His kids have to quarantine after they get back. I wonder if they hid that from the school as well.

Hooray for petty pta parents. Raphael and Heidi aren’t as beloved as they think they are.

      • UptownGirl says:

And yet Beto was able to pull together donations, shelter and transportation for thousands, possibly millions is Texans this week while Cruz left the country. There is a push for Abbott and Cruz to resign and I am all for it!!

    • fluffy_bunny says:

Do they have live in help? You can’t just leave a dog alone while you go to another country. They’re not like cats.

      • Jay says:

Oh, good catch. Still awful, though!

      • clomo says:

They don’t like cats? I just hate hime more by the day, can’t he go away please? and he’s wearing skinny jeans with a beer belly and he’s a middle-aged politician? He looks silly, this isn’t about agism btw, it is just such a bad look on him as is the beard. At least trump dressed respectfully for the job but don’t mistake that for any kind of respect for the guy. He needs to zip it and golf for the rest of his days.

    • Godwina says:

Have no fear, I’m sure he also abandoned his hired help to the cold, too.

      • Jay says:

        I’m just imagining that conversation:

Ted to his staff: Damn, it’s freezing here and it’s only gonna get worse, so we’re escaping on our private jet to a resort in Cancun with those we care about. Oh, not you, obviously. And not the dog. How soon can you pack my bags?

      • fluffy_bunny says:

Jay- They flew commercial. That’s how they got outed. If they had flown private the lid would probably have been kept on better.

  3. Elizabeth says:

This selfish, contemptible loser!! I don’t even have words.

  4. Emily says:

Like all good parents, Ted let his kids fly during a pandemic. And made the round trip for fun.

Like all good, regular parents, Ted always gives in to his kids’ desire to travel to exotic locations, because it’s a casual, normal request that all parents can relate to.

Like all good elected officials, Ted thought he was better than his constituents. He deserved an escape to a warm, tropical locations while the poor peasants deserved to freeze in their homes.

Gosh, he’s so relatable. And honest.

    • josephine says:

Not to mention that he took them to a country that’s filled with people who he has nothing but contempt for. There is not one thing right about him. And let’s add to your list that he completely and totally sucks up to the man who insulted his wife. So he’s happy to throw both the kids and the wife under the bus.

He’s no man at all. For a state that seems to celebrate everything “macho” they elected a person who has no admirable qualities at all, let alone anything I would associate with being manly.

    • Golly Gee says:

And before jetting off, he told his constituents to stay home, stay safe and hug their kids. Not one scruple.

    • smlstrs says:

“The Houston police confirmed that the senator’s office had sought their assistance for his airport trip on Wednesday.”

Not only did he leave his constituents in this situation, he thought that with all this going on the Houston police, who may be getting calls about accidents and wellness checks and who knows what else, should prioritize over all that: helping elected official Ted Cruz abandon his state in crisis to take a vacation. 😳

      • Holly hobby says:

They helped him on his return too. What a waste of taxpayer dollars.

      • UptownGirl says:

That was what truly pissed me off! The audacity of privilege and status to have a police escort and they contacted IAH authorities to escort his family to the gate. The anger that is spewing in the news and Twitter has been swift and unforgiving. Cruz deserves every bit of backlash x 100!!

  5. Jenn says:

His obligations to his state (and mine) aside, a “good dad” doesn’t take his children on a vacation in the middle of a pandemic, in the middle of a massive natural disaster. A good dad teaches his children about compassion and sacrifice and personal responsibility.

    • smcollins says:

Amen to that! Exactly. But this *is* Ted Cruz we’re talking about, so the words “compassion” and “responsibility” will never actually apply.

    • Spanky says:

Why would you even let your family board a plane going ANYWHERE in a pandemic? Just because planes are flying doesn’t mean that you should be on one. What if you got Covid on the plane? Or at the resort? I live in NYC and I haven’t been on a city bus or subway since mid-March 2020.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

He should have been boots on the ground helping any way he was able AND pressuring ERCOT to get their shit together and make repairs, as well as proposing legislation to force them to support/winterize their infrastructure. Ugh. Slimy fkn sociopathic weasel.

  6. Chica1971 says:

My daughters ‘asked” ? Who’s the parent? They are going to a foreign country in middle of snowstorm.. Wife is obviously trash too, but least that mystery is solved.

    • agnes says:

She married him, procreated with him and stays with him.

She even goes on holidays with him…

      There was no mystery. *shrugs*

      • HoofRat says:

I used to feel sorry for her, and figured she as maybe staying out of Catholic guilt, or concern for her daughters – then I read the texts. She resides in the same trash heap as Greezy Ted.

      • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

Just like we wondered (a LONG time ago) if Melanoma was a “hostage” or “Stockholm Syndromed”. Nope. These wives are JUST AS AWFUL as the men they married.

  7. Smile says:

He also has the Grump belly – Gross.

  8. Aang says:

He left the dog?? Alone in a freezing house? He probably has an undocumented cleaning lady he left behind to freeze and feed the dog.

    • TeamAwesome says:

Security guard, apparently. And who pays for that?

      • Indywom says:

Who leaves the dog behind in a freezing house? He couldn’t arrange for the dog to be with people who had electricity? What a jerk.

    • BearcatLawyer says:

I live about a mile away from them. We got power back yesterday, and I am pretty sure they do not have a generator. Still unconscionable to leave the dog and security guard to suffer though.

    • Lady Keller says:

I came here to comment this. He probably has a Mexican housekeeper left behind to look after it.

    • MM2 says:

My power went out this week & I had people offer for me to stay with them, but I explained that there was no way I could leave my dog. I slept in front of the fire with her cuddled up to me & I just can’t imagine her alone, shivering in a cold house. Ted Cruz is like the human embodiment of the Grinch, only the Grinch actually cared for his dog.

      • schmootc says:

Mine was out from Sunday night to Thursday midday. I could have gone elsewhere, but I didn’t want to leave my three cats alone. They would likely have been fine, but I would have been bothered by it. And my two boys ended up sleeping on each other right next to me Wednesday night. They’re buddies and like to wrestle and such, but they usually don’t sleep together.

    • HoofRat says:

When our power and gas went out during a cold snap earlier this year, we bundled our little dog in her warmest coat and lined her bed with our down-filled throw. (She doesn’t like covers on her, so no tucking her in with us). I cannot imagine being enough of a monster to abandon your pet that way, even with supervision (and don’t get me started on making.a security guard work under those circumstances). Can somebody organize a rescue for poor little Snowflake?

      • Ann says:

We lost power for about 36 hours and chose to stay with our dog and cat even though we could have gone to family who had power and space for us. My dog is about Snowflake’s size and she was cold, I had to keep her covered. The cat seemed unbothered but I wouldn’t have wanted to leave her either, especially since my pet sitter was unable to get to our house because of the icy roads. Leaving a dog like that is unconscionable.

  9. Scorpion says:

😂😂😂😂 I know I shouldn’t be enjoying this schadenfreude but I have been following this story with a giant bag of popcorn.

    • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Omg me too. My husband still bobbleheads right wing talking points from time to time until I shut him down, slam the book and slowly exit the room flipping him off lol. Early this morning I’m washing dishes, (he’s super busy this second because most of the homes he’s servicing are under water with busted pipes, debris, chaotic mess), I tell him our son wants to go to Cancun: he should drop his responsibilities and get us out of this hell hole.😁 His look was priceless. He practically bowed to my excellence lmao.

      • Lucy says:

        * standing ovation*
My husband does the same, he’s under the delusion that the Republicans are going to grow a pair and go back to doing actual “conservative” things.
He voted for Obama, Hillary and Biden because he thinks character matters, so that’s a comfort, but his co workers listened to Limbaugh all the time, so he still occasionally says something insane that sounded plausible to him after hours of ranting. It really is like being subjected to mind programming.

      • BeanieBean says:

Oh, you made me laugh this morning, Mabs. Your comment are always a delight, but today’s was perfection.

    • KhaoManee says:

Me tooooo! I’m getting such glee out of the fact that his rich friends ratted him out! Literally everyone hates Ted Cruz. His poor kids though. Also, #FreeSnowflake!

  10. Chrissy (The Original) says:

I hope Snowflake Cruz is okay after bring abandoned by his family. Maybe one of Heidi’s “friends” should report the Cruz’s for endangering their beloved pet. It’s ironic that the real snowflakes were the wuss Cruzs who bailed on their dog, friends and all Texans simply because it was a convenient time for a holiday. During a pandemic where 500,000 Americans have died! Ted is the definition of patriot! SMH

  11. SarahCS says:

I’m not even going to start on leaving the dog to freeze as others are already sharing collective indignation on that point.

I want to highlight that he flew out in an incognito grey mask (which I still saw someone match to a pic of him wearing it elsewhere) and flew back wearing a TEXAS one (I don’t know if this is the state flag but with it being the lone start state I assume that or similar). Nice try, now you want to represent your state do you? We see you.

    • Tara says:

Yes!!!! This was the first thing I noticed! What a pandering tool.

    • Christin says:

The state flag mask was the clue that it was his return trip.

His actions equate wearing an ‘I don’t care, do you’ jacket. He might as well have worn a mask with that sentiment.

    • MissMarierose says:

The outgoing mask was Texas related as well. It has a picture of a cannon and the phrase “Come and Take It” which refers to the first battle of the Texas revolution when Texans taunted Mexican forces to retrieve their cannon.
So, the fact that he would wear that mask TO MEXICO is incredible.
Just every bit of this story adds to the ever-growing tower of a-holishness that is Ted Cruz.

      • HoofRat says:

He wore that mask to the inauguration as well; I wondered what it referred to. There are not enough synonyms for “douchbag” to describe this noisome lump of ambulatory excrement.

      • SarahCS says:

Oh wow, thanks for the explainer. Just when I didn’t think it was possible to think less of him here we are!

      • Godwina says:

It also refers waaaaaay back to Sparta, with all of those *cringe* undertones… (molon labe, now a white supremacist chant).

So he’s a freaking delight in all ways, apparently.

  12. Frida_K says:

I still have power in my apartment but not everyone in my complex does. Some buildings are still dark. It is still painfully cold here in Austin. My windows leak freezing air because they’re not double-paned and equipped for such extremes. I haven’t been able to go grocery shopping yet because I live on street with hills and curves, so with the ice it’s just too dangerous to try to get out. I can’t sleep because I’m afraid that I’ll wake up to no power and being in the dark again. I finally passed out at about 1:30 last night and woke up at 5:00, my heart racing. After I leaped up to check that I still had power, I couldn’t go back to sleep so here I am.

I’m one of the lucky ones here in Texas and I have no business whining about my plight. Not when so many have it so much worse. However, I felt that I might share this so people outside of Texas can know how viscerally any one of us might experience Cancún Cruz’s behavior.

I hope he gets hounded and shamed relentlessly for this. I hope that he is forced to resign or, barring that, his future political plans are utterly destroyed by this.

It is simply unfathomable that he thought for one second that jetting off to a luxury resort was in any way appropriate right now. Unfathomable.

    • Darla says:

I’m really sorry, I hope to god it warms up there soon.

    • Sandra says:

I’m so sorry this is happening to you. I have a high school friend in Austin who said it’s supposed to warm up this weekend? I hope it does for your sake. Stay safe, friend.

    • Chanteloup says:

I hear you on the fear of cold. I have been in life-threatening conditions for too long! a time because of the cold before, and the fear has not left me.
My heat went out the other night, and for part the day. I do not want to complain because so many people have it so much worse right now!!! but I was terrified – and so relieved when it came back on.
I think my existential fear of cold makes me feel colder, you know, as its icy cold fingers grip my heart. I’m instantly back to near death. I would say lol, but I can’t laugh about it yet!
Stay warm, hope you can get some rest!

    • Spice cake38 says:

Prayers and *warm*thoughts to all of you good Texans ☀️🌵❤️

    • J.Mo says:

I’m so sorry for what you’re going through and hope you and your neighbours are comfortable by now. If this were to happen again, thick plastic or bubble wrap stapled over your windows would actually help, as well as thick drapes/curtains. You probably know this and would have prepared if you could have, just trying to be helpful from Canada. I’m in a Facebook group where a Texan friend asked for tips about dealing with the ice on her complex’s sidewalk and we were able to help her out. Take care.

  13. Becks1 says:

And someone from the girls’ school gave the times the school’s protocols for pandemic travel – you cant return for 10 days or something unless you get tested a certain number of days after returning, etc. Clearly even their “friends” cant stand them. I’m still laughing that the text chain was handed over to the NYT so damn fast.

  14. BlueSky says:

F@ck this guy. Someone on Twitter made an excellent point on how he loves attacking celebrities and liberal elites. Meanwhile he lives in a exclusive neighborhood, his awful wife works for Goldman Sachs, and they jet off frequently to Cancún and stay at 5 star resort hotels. I remember all those people waiting in line for food while this fat f@ck looks like he never says no to seconds or thirds.

  15. LightPurple says:

Those police officers should have been deployed to something far more important, like helping other Texas instead of escorting his selfish butt through an airport. While all this was going on yesterday, Representative Ocasio-Cortez raised over a million dollars for a Texas relief fund. She’s not from Texas.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

I think at this point, AOC has raised $3.2M, while the governor silently sits on his hands (when he’s not slinging shit about the non-existant “green new deal- what an asshole), hasn’t been in touch with his largest cities’ mayors, hasn’t asked for federal assistance, or gives a single shit about his constituents. Meanwhile junior senator jellybelly, Snivelin’ Fled Cruz, jets off to more southern climes, which also happens to be the third most infected country on the planet. What a colossal douchebag.

  16. Who ARE these people? says:

I never want to have to think about Ted Cruz’ nostrils again. Sick of that flippant behavior. Part and parcel with the rest of non serious actions. He’s such an ass.

  17. Miranda says:

Which daughter planned it, was it the one who screamed when he was holding her a few years back? Maybe she was deliberately trying to destroy his career. Good kid. I mean, all dads embarrass their kids, it’s practically in the job description. But can you imagine your dad willingly becoming the bitch of the absolute worst President in American history, even after that barely sentient Dollar Store cheese curl talked shit about your mom?

  18. Jane Doe says:

Throwing your own children under the bus is quite a look.

    • Chaine says:

Well, he already threw his wife and dad under the bus so he could suck up to trump, so I guess the kids were all that was left.

      • BearcatLawyer says:

The dog is next. Mark my words.

      • Chanteloup says:

“Didn’t I tell you – little Snowflake especially requested I fly to Mexico to buy her dog treats. She didn’t want to come herself, because she’s even whiter and more racist than I am. I swear! I only left to pick up the treats for my precious little pup and was flying directly back to give them to her!!!!” ~ Lyin’ Ted throwing his poor dog under the bus

    • Sid says:

This guy has absolutely no regard for anyone. Just terrible.

    • Liz version 700 says:

Those poor kids probably already hated having him as a dad but now he is the father and pet owner of the year. Complete sociopath. Start the kids’ lifetime therapy fund now Heidi….

  19. Call_Me_Al says:

Does anyone know what Fox News is saying about this? It’d be great if they also started clutching their pearls about this, but I’m not hopeful.
He is laughably gross. So dumb, Cruz. Traveling while you’ve criticized others and blamed AOC and Green New Deal for this? Wow. Also, your wife is perfectly capable of taking your kids on a trip by herself. I doubt they would miss you.

    • Cheryl says:

I had a quick look at the commentary there. Even those folks are writing in, “Be a man, Ted…own up.”

    • Spanky says:

So true. He had to “escort” his wife and kids to Mexico? His wife couldn’t do it on her own?

  20. Imogene says:

So many good takes already in the comments. Additionally, how embarassing that the text chain was immediately handed over. It is clear that people do not like Ted and Heidi or else they would not have done that. How shitty of a person do you have to be to inspire that kind of disloyalty. Whew.

    • Christin says:

The text chain leaves no doubt about their lifestyle and priorities.

Isn’t he terribly disliked by his colleagues? Apparently his local “friends” feel the same!

  21. Sarah says:

His wife is a managing director at Goldman Sachs and a Harvard grad. I think she can manage travelling with two tweens, LMAO. But after Trump called his wife ugly, said his dad assassinated JFK, and said Ted was the Zodiac killer…throwing his daughters under the bus absolutely tracks. I wish him nothing but chronic kidney stones and untreatable UTIs forever.

    • Indywom says:

Trump got one thing right when he called him “Lyin’ Ted.” Truer words have never been spoken. Ted is the oily creepy guy in two toned shoes who comes to the club, puts his wedding ring in his pocket and tries to hit on all the girls.

    • BearcatLawyer says:

I want Goldman Sachs to fire his wife, mostly for leaving the dog behind.

    • J.Mo says:

Maybe Ted went along to take care of the dog. Oh. Never mind.

  22. Charfromdarock says:

    Unconscionable.

  23. Merricat says:

    Oops, my comment is redundant

  24. Malificent says:

Ted’s wife is such an incompetent adult that she is incapable of traveling by herself with two tweens? Story like Swiss cheese even before the narcing neighbors,

    • olliesmom says:

If Mrs. Cruz can’t handle her two tween daughters alone then we have another story!

I can’t believe that he didn’t take a step back and think that this did not look good and was totally tone deaf and privileged, but nope.

His place is in his district to help manage the crisis. He was elected to serve the people.

And since he’s at home alone he has plenty of time to get out there and hand out bottled water, food, blankets and whatever to his neighbors and constituents.

  25. STRIPE says:

Texan here. It’s really hard to overstate my anger at the current situation. However, this situation and Ted Cruz’s actions totally make sense if you take Texas Republican ethos to its conclusion.

People like Cruz, Abbot et al believe that govt doesn’t work and it should get out of the way. So they run for govt seats and do their best to break it so it won’t work.

Then, when there is a crisis, people like Cruz can’t be bothered to help because “it’s not the governments job!” It’s completely sociopathic but also totally foreseeable. Texas has taken Republicanism to pathological levels and it’s really frustrating

    • stormsmama says:

      Great point STRIPE!

There was that mayor in Colorado TX (maybe name is off)
who said basically “its not my job to save you! survival of the fittest!!”
      and was forced to resign

      THESE ARE PEOPLE WHO
      HATE
      PEOPLE!!!!!!
They think GOVT should stay out of it—- EXCEPT when it benefits them directly of course
(i mean legislating a woman uterus is as BIG AND INTRUSIVE as govt gets amirite)

they also claim to be all about “blue lives” (((not a thing)))
but in actuality are cool with the TRUMP flag ABOVE the American flag, and oh yeah, people beating and brutalizing police!!

  26. Sandra says:

What part of “I dropped my 10 and 12 year olds off in a foreign country and went back home” makes him sound any better in this situation? Ted is not a smart man.

    • sassafras says:

Right? I was seeing conservatives all over Facebook last night saying “he’s a good dad, making sure his kids got to Mexico safe” and I immediately asked, “Is he a good dad for leaving them in an unsafe country during a pandemic?” And all I got was crickets…

      • stormsmama says:

these same people think its REPULSIVE that people want to come to USA to give their kids a better life

they in fact GO ON AND ON
about how awful people are to USE their kids to try to gain entry into this country

        HIS HYPOCRISY is mind BLOWING

    • Traveler says:

      during a pandemic no less.

  27. mu says:

Something very similiar happened in my country last year. The Attorney general in my country traveled to an island with his wife, daughter and daughter friend’s in a private plane (payed with tax money, btw) during the pandemic, people were (are¡¡) dying and losing their jobs. When he returned (yes,he didn’t cancel the vacation) he blamed his teenage daughter, he said that he was a father first rather that a public figure, he was not going to apologize or resigned. Well, if you’re asking, he is still at his job (doing poorly, being corrupt), and traveling everywhere with his private plane.

  28. Case says:

I find it hilarious that he thought a good cover story was that he was merely ESCORTING his young children to Cancun to leave them there and take ANOTHER flight back home without quarantining, let them make the choice to go on vacation in the middle of a pandemic, and felt that going to Cancun because of a few snow days was reasonable and relatable.

  29. Amelie says:

For those worried about the dog, you can read this hilarious article over at NY Mag. I do believe the Cruzs’ either had the security guard or a family friend/neighbor checking on it but I do find it unusual they left the dog in the house alone. Usually when people leave behind dogs when they travel, they have someone stay at the house with the dog, the dog goes to a family/friend’s house, or they leave the dog at a boarding facility. I used to work for a dog walking company and some of the clients would just leave the dog at home and have the dog walkers come in several times a day to feed and take the dog out. But somehow, I don’t think that’s what the Cruzs did. Anyways, here is the reporting on the dog’s welfare from a NY Mag reporter who actually went by Ted Cruz’s house to check on things: https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2021/02/ted-cruz-flees-texas-for-cancun-ditches-family-poodle.html

I saw the text threads purportedly from the Cruz family circulating on Twitter but wasn’t sure if they were real. There was a tweet that said “Lovelies, the texts aren’t safe!” referring to the text thread’s name lol.

    • Ann says:

I have left my dog for a few days with a pet sitter to come in and walk, feed and spend with her several times a day. Someone she has known since she was a puppy. But only for a few days and I felt badly about it because my sitter couldn’t spend the whole night. But it would have been hard for someone to get to the house this past week with the roads being so bad. In any case, the power was OFF when they left for the airport and only came back on later that night apparently. So they’re awful.

  30. Godwina says:

A shame the next election for him is too far in the future; this will be forgotten by anyone who *may* have been inclined to swing away from Evil Trademarked over this nonsense. Sad.

  31. Delphine says:

Hillary tweeted “Don’t vote for anyone you wouldn’t trust with your dog.”

    Dead. ☠️

  32. Sparky says:

Kaiser, I hope that you will cover Don Jr’s response to the Cruz situation. It’s priceless!!

    Donald Trump Jr.
    @DonaldJTrumpJr · 18h
The hypocrisy of those trying to cancel Ted Cruz who have been totally silent on their Democrat Governor’s incompetence is telling. My thoughts on the Cancún Cruz fauxoutrage! #Cruz #CancunGate is fake.

    (The Governor is Republican)

  33. Jay says:

Looks like one of the least popular senators and his family are also vehemently disliked by their friends and neighbours! Not a surprise.

I laughed really hard at the fact that these texts were shared with the Times by multiple people. I’ll wonder what the group thread that doesn’t have the Cruz family on it is like?

    What. A. Tool.

  34. Petrichor says:

What gets me is that the Texas state Democratic Party has called for his resignation over this, but where were they when he was screaming election fraud and helping to incite an insurrection? Or did I miss something?

    • sassafras says:

The Texas Democrats have been asking Ted Cruz to resign over that as well, trust.

    • BearcatLawyer says:

The Texas Dems call for his resignation practically every week. They are very, very good about publicizing his schedule and getting protesters on site. Living about a mile from him and a few miles away from his local office/favourite haunts, I find it hilarious that he gets hounded here ALL. THE. TIME.

  35. Lindy says:

In Austin, still freezing our asses off. Tens of thousands without water, still thousands without power, a boil advisory for an indefinite period of time. We lost power last Thursday–yep, over a week ago–with the first ice storm that rolled through, before the steep temperature drops and snow. After 27 hours it was restored. For about 8 hours in total until Monday 2am, which is when the state grid operators cut power off to most of the city. We now know they did so in an effort to keep the grid from failing so dramatically that it could be weeks and weeks without power for the whole state. We still have no water, though power came back on yesterday afternoon for us. With two young kids and three cats, it was a struggle, and we finally took refuge with a friend who had at least intermittent power, so they could keep their house at about 60 (compared to ours which was below 30). The roads are currently a disaster. It’s slowly starting to warm up, but it’ll be another day before we see temps above freezing for a full 24hrs. The snow and ice from last Thursday are still thick and unmelting.

I thought I hated Ted Cruz before. I thought I had seen the lowest depths he could sink to. I thought we had witnessed the most flagrantly despicable behavior from him that it was possible to ever see with his boot licking of 45. But nope. Little did we know, he is actually worse than the slime mold we thought he was. He’s a hateful person.

People froze to death, they died in car accidents desperate to find water or a warming center, they were crowded into any warm place they found in the midst of a pandemic, they died in carbon monoxide poisoning and house fires.

And Ted Cruz flew to Cancun.

  36. Nicole says:

Meanwhile, my Trump supporter friends have been posting messages like “Lucky him, if I could afford to go to Cancun to escape this, I would!” and “Thanks for being a dad in a time of strife for your family. Sick of this news guy blowing it up. ”

    Ugh…..

    • Marie says:

I am in Houston, and they did a poll this morning on the local FOX news channel asking what people thought of Cruz going to Cancun, and 60% didn’t think it was a big deal. 60%!!!! I swear people have become blinded by party politics that they can’t differentiate between right and wrong anymore. Every American only gets two avatars to represent them in the Senate – he doesn’t give a crap about Texans. He never has.

  37. Coco says:

I saw that a new nickname for him might be Flyin’ Ted, instead of Lyin’ Ted. What other good ones might there be other than that and Cancun Cruz?
    Cabana Cruz
    $309 Bed Ted
    Ted Froze
    Zodiac Chiller
His wife could be Heidi Flies.

    • stormsmama says:

Jessica Yellin created the hashtag #tedfled
and someone else called him #cancuncruz
and it made me think of Garbage Pail Kids
and how occasionally there were “twins” ie dups with difft names
So I am going to make some for Ted!

  38. You Know Me says:

Cruz is awful and the people of Texas deserve better. Time to un-gerrymander Texas and quit the cheating, manipulating and out right lies.

  39. DogObsessedGirl says:

Was he elected not because people liked him, but because they disliked his competitors?

    • Darla says:

Sexy Beto? Doubt it. He was elected because Texas has more Republicans registered.

    • LynSTx says:

He was primarily elected because a) Texas is gerrymandered to hell and back, and b) Texas has 3 religions – Guns, God, and football. Rethugs like Flying Lying Ted whip people up into a frenzy about the first two. Evangelical preachers do the rest.

  40. Diamond Rottweiler says:

For the record, ditching any animal and subjecting them to solitary confinement is never ok. The idea that this is ok with cats is deeply especially not ok. Yet people do this with cats and it frequently ends with behavioral problems that lead to these poor cats being put down. One of my close friends is a vet and has terrible stories about cats being driven crazy because of being subjected to this.

  41. Marni112 says:

Not my original comment but something I saw on Twitter to the effect of how much do you have to dislike the Cruzs to fork over the group chat to the New York Times , in which Heidi discusses her vacation plans and a return date on the weekend.Though one person said what if it was Heidi who firked it over ? It doesn’t matter though , this won’t dent him one iota and Ted will be re-elected.

  42. Ferdinand says:

Well, I guess that wall wasn’t big enough to stop him from coming to Mexico.

  43. Carmelita says:

He really is just next-level disgusting. He is everything that is vile, greedy, selfish and dishonest about his party.

  44. Jessie says:

I live in Glasgow which is predominantly made of staunch Yes voters/advocates for Scottish independence so I’m still yet to see any negative tweets Meghan and Harry’s ‘Service Is Universal’ statement on my feed. People here see the royals for what they are. It’s no coincidence that Liz’s sons just happened to seek out men like Jimmy Savile and Jeffrey Epstein. Birds of a feather stick together and I’m over the moon Harry and Meghan can raise their children far away from those psychopaths.

  45. Cas says:

Reminds me of how our Australian PM Scott Morrison took a holiday to Hawaii while our country burned, his office tried to cover up where he was, and then he blamed his wife and kids for making him go….
