Kanye West thinks his half-assed 2020 presidential run ‘cost him his marriage’

Kim Kardashian filed for divorce from Kanye West. It was a long time coming, even longer than when we first heard about her plans at the start of the year. It seems Kim was over it completely as early as one year ago, when Kanye began “running for president” and saying sh-t about their family. Frankly, I think Kim was on edge when Kanye went full MAGA, but sure, running for president and simultaneously committing election fraud by coordinating with Jared Kushner and the Trump campaign did not help matters at all.

Kanye West believes his controversial 2020 presidential run was the tipping point in his marriage to Kim Kardashian. The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star, 40, filed for divorce from the rapper, 43, on Friday after nearly seven years of marriage. Amid the divorce news, West has been “texting people” and “talking things through,” a source tells PEOPLE.

“He’s in that place of ‘if only,'” says the source. “‘If only I had done this, if only I hadn’t done that.’ He’s processing things. He thinks that the Presidential run was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Before that, there was hope. After that, none. It cost him his marriage.”

[From People]

Let’s be real, the presidential run didn’t help, but Kim didn’t decide to divorce him merely because he ran a half-assed “presidential campaign” which was built and designed specifically by Trump-supporting Republicans for the express purpose of siphoning a marginal amount of swing voters away from Joe Biden. Kim is also divorcing him because he talked sh-t about her family as he was “campaigning,” and because she’s just done with his whole deal these days. I would also imagine his recent “Godly Preacher Kanye” act hasn’t helped matters either. People Magazine’s sources also said that Kanye is having a hard time with all of this:

After Kim Kardashian officially filed for divorce from Kanye West on Friday, the rap star, 43, “isn’t happy” but “resigned to reality,” a source close to West tells PEOPLE.

“He knew it was coming, but that doesn’t make it any easier,” the source says. “This is a somber day for him.”

The new information comes after a source told PEOPLE that the divorce filing had been amicable, with both West and Kardashian in agreement over joint legal and physical custody.

“It’s as amicable as possible, but amicable doesn’t mean joyful or ideal,” the West source tells PEOPLE. “It just means that they’re being adults about the whole thing. Kanye is seeing counselors and advisors to help him through this spot. It’s rough for him, and he isn’t happy, but he’s resigned to reality,” the insider adds.

The divorce filing — and new developments — come just days after a source told PEOPLE that Kanye was “not doing well” amid the couple’s split.

“He is anxious and very sad. He knows that the marriage is over, and there’s nothing that can be done right now,” the source said on Wednesday. “He also knows what he is losing in Kim.”

[From People]

“He also knows what he is losing in Kim.” Yeah. I know she’s not anyone’s favorite person and no one will give her credit for anything, but Kim stuck around a lot longer than most women would have. I personally would have been out the door the first time he put on the MAGA hat. She not only stuck around, she still championed him and stroked his ego and defended him publicly and privately. She was ride-or-die, until she wasn’t. Plus, I don’t think Godly Preacher Ye is going to be too happy about being Divorced Dad Ye now.

“He also knows what he is losing in Kim.”- right, ok Kim.

    • KL says:

I mean, whatever other people see in or think of her, he pursued Kim for years. YEARS. She’s always embodied some kind of ideal for him.

That might have been part of the problem, ultimately, but I might be projecting my own experiences. I’ve definitely broken up with people for treating me like crap while they, at the same time, sang utter rhapsodies in praise of me to other people. So it doesn’t have to be a planted quote, it could just be the usual guilt trip of: “How can you leave me WHEN I LOVE YOU SO MUCH? Ignore our actual relationship. FOCUS ON MY LOVE.”

  2. Ariel says:

I dated a “rapid cycling bipolar” man in my youth. After we broke up, i was tired for the better part of a year. That stuff is exhausting. I know Kim has help and money, but trying to mother her actual children and a narcissistic bipolar with a god complex- she has all of my sympathy.
It is a nightmare situation for anyone.

But again, after she was robbed and traumatized and instead of being supportive he had his own breakdown and made it all about himself, and in that moment she had to support his emotional well being- i have been unendingly appalled by him.

No matter what you think of her, she deserves better than him.

    • Snuffles says:

Agreed. I mean, there is a lot to dislike about Kim and the Kardashian, but she went through a LOT with Kanye and stuck by him as long as she could.

    • Oy_Hey says:

This. That woman and her family are…
That doesn’t mean she or anyone deserves this. She didn’t make him bipolar nor did she immediately dump him at the first sign of trouble. She tried with him and just got demolished. There are plenty of things to give her grief over – this ain’t one.

    • coolspray says:

Unpopular opinion here but I empathize with them both – and especially with their children. The issue here seems firmly to be mental illness, one of the last remaining taboos IMO and something not talked about as much as it should be. Really don’t understand why there isn’t a basic primer about mental illness and health taught in schools (at least in my school district) the way other health optics are.

There are just aren’t any winners in this situation. I have no doubt the bipolar cycle is hard on Kanye and hell for Kim and their kids are somewhere in the middle. I too have first-hand experience living with / supporting someone who is severely mentally ill (bipolar / paranoid schizophrenic) and it’s EXHAUSTING. No matter how much you love or care for someone, you need to tap out at some point.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. Here komes all the Kim “martyr” stories.

    • Swack says:

There are stories that Kim is going to play out the divorce on the last season of KUWTK and on the new show they are doing for HULU. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

  4. Faithmobile says:

The picture with the beige church attire looks like the cult outfits from Schitt’s Creek.

  5. Christa says:

He would not handle bring a preacher very good. I am not religious but I have heard of stories through friends, family. The stories always make the congregations sound so petty and cliquey. So some board does the hiring and there is a ton of backstabbing and gossiping and then after a couple years they fire the preachers. Ye does not have the personality of a humble servant of god or a congregation. Sure, he can go to some bible school and homeschool his poor kids but he will never be anyone’s preacher. Lol.

    • Kkat says:

This isn’t your typical church, it’s set up more like a cult and he is the leader.
The church is on his property, no one will be firing him.
It will end because he wants it to, if ever

  6. Heylee says:

While the campaign could very well of been the “no turning back” point, the marriage was always going to end if Kanye failed to pursue his mental health/wellbeing like he pursued so many of his other passions.

    • STRIPE says:

Yep. If it weren’t the “presidential campaign” it would have been something else. People eventually get fed up with their partners who do not take care of their mental health especially when kids are involved.

  7. Ronaldinho says:

Noone ever wonders if Kanye would have stayed with Kim had roles been reversed.

Put on a lot of weight. Changed her entire world view. Became mentally ill, decided not to medicate her illness.
Mouthed off about wanted to abort her eldest. Mouthed off about his mother.
Dunno if he would have stayed.

We only see Kanye in his manic stages, not paranoia, psychosis or depression. You know I’m a trauma therapist. Bipolar can be managed well but this is not the case with Kanye and it won’t be easy on anyone around him.

I really am not coming for Kim. I think she loved him or loves him. Sometimes you have to choose you and your children
    I think she did

    • Jordana says:

Exactly. Women who stay in the crazy are praised for being strong. And I’m not bashing women who stay and fight for their partner’s mental health and family. Kim put up with a lot, publicly. If the situations and issues were reversed on them, and Kanye filed after years of antics by Kim…what would the headline be? 🤔

  8. Mac says:

I don’t think the presidential campaign cost him his marriage, I think it was the final straw in a gigantic pile of straws.

  9. Beth says:

Kanye definitely screwed himself over by going “off-script” and acting like a fool-the Kardashians are hyper-aware of the image they present the world and don’t like to look anything but perfect. Kanye is an egomaniac wild card with bipolar disorder-of course they weren’t going to last. Maybe Kim will get a buy 2, get 1 free deal on this divorce.

    • Maida says:

And Jared Kushner and the other Republicans who encouraged Kanye to run bear some of the blame, in my opinion.

  10. Lwt00 says:

For someone like Kanye, he’s more upset at the perception that he failed, rather than being upset that his family’s life is totally up-ended. He thinks if he’d won the election, or if Trump had won and rewarded him with some special position or something, that Kim would have stuck around. I give it a minute before his sense of self-preservation flips his script to “she was cheating, she didn’t deserve me and could handle my awesome godliness.”

  11. Tiffany says:

I wonder if this is more about division of assets since Ye has quite a few lawsuits coming his way and possibly a federal investigation because of his involvement with Kushner.

I think Kim got some solid advice from a true litigator instead of Wesser.

    • atorontogal says:

      Ooooo interesting!

    • lucy2 says:

If there’s one thing I’ll believe about that family, when in doubt, they’ll protect their money. I could definitely see that being the thing that made her say nope, legal split, rather than just continue living separately.

  12. L4frimaire says:

I think it was his increasingly unstable behavior and refusal to deal with his mental health that was the deciding factor. Everything playing out in public, because that is how they operate, didn’t help either. The Kardashians are longtime Republicans and Kim has met with Trump several times, so it wasn’t just the MAGA stuff,as distasteful as it is.

    • Dee Kay says:

This is not true. The Kardashians are on-the-record Democrats, including Kim. Kim K met with Trump to get women of color who had been unfairly convicted released from prison, she used Kanye’s connection to Trump on behalf of those women. But neither she nor her sisters or mom are GOP voters. They are a Dem family.

  13. ce says:

Thank you Kaiser for addressing his “presidential campaign” for the T****-driven scam that it was.

As always, it’s the ones who claim the loudest to be doing god’s work whose behavior shows something quite different. I had a feeling that him talking about aborting his 7-year-old daughter was the last straw back then more than anything else. Unforgivably cruel behavior, from such a “righteous” person

  14. elfie says:

So he’s “resigned to reality” eh? That will be the first time that happened in many years. Would have been nice for his children if he’d ever been resigned to the reality that he was their father.

  15. Truthiness says:

I will never see anything other than a baked potato when I see Silver-wrapped Kanye. And I wonder if Kim would divorce Kanye if his star power had kept rising during the marriage instead of falling. He gave her legitimacy and entree to people who would never have said hello before.

  16. Anilehcim says:

This was never any kind of love story or match made to last. Kanye wanted a Barbie doll and Kim was willing to do that so that she could finally get accepted in those circles that used to laugh at her and treat her like a joke.

No one took the Kardashian/Jenner family seriously until Kanye came along. Kim was willing to be his Barbie, or as he so eloquently put it, his “perfect bitch” as long as she got that cover of Vogue. They’re all on their way to becoming billionaires and a lot of it is thanks to their association with Kanye. They don’t actually need him anymore. As a matter of fact, his behavior makes him detrimental to the brand because he just might go too far and lose his credibility at this point. Kim wants to be taken seriously now. They all as a family and a brand went from living for the fame and being OK with any attention to wanting to be taken seriously now.

At the end of the day, it’s all about money. Kanye served his purpose but he’s too much trouble now. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t blame her. I wouldn’t have lasted half as long as Kim did through all the unhinged shit Kanye does these days. That “church” is a cult.

  17. chimes@midnight says:

I know it is not his responsibility, but I wish Kanye would have used his wide audience, immense industry power and general street cred (prior to the last few years) to speak out more about being bipolar and the realities and challenges of living with that, but also his personhood in dealing with the disease (“I’m not just bipolar. I’m an artist and a father and a success who happens to be bipolar.”) instead of getting bad advice from yes men, perpetuating hurtful stereotypes and not allowing himself to get help. He literally has all the resources in the world that millions wish they had, he could get any medication and the very best treatments and therapy, he could be an example but he isn’t. It’s his choice but I wish he made a different one.

    • Dee Kay says:

Fame and fortune has negatively impacted the mental health of lots of ppl — maybe MOST ppl — who entered into it without conditions as serious as bipolar personality disorder. Fame and fortune means you are surrounded by sycophants and yes men, many or most of whom are leeches, crooks, or both. So, while it is tragic Kanye didn’t use his platform as you say to help educate more ppl about BPD and mental health and use his money to seek the best treatment, it sadly isn’t that surprising. Most wealthy celebrities are surrounded by people who only reinforce any dysfunctions they have or give them new ones. I actually think Kim helped Kanye more than she hurt him — she did want to benefit from his fame but didn’t need his money, and probably did try to urge him towards treatment, multiple times — but Kanye was listening to a lot more people besides just her.

  18. Jill says:

This divorce has nothing to do with Trump. It has to do with the fact that Kanye West suffers from mental illness. Relating this back to politics takes away from the real issue of mental health. Very disappointed by how political everything has become.

  19. Amando says:

Kim is no prize, but I hope he gets the help he desperately needs. Not just for bi-polar, but also narcissism.
