Angelina Jolie & Jon Bernthal look fiery in the ‘Those Who Wish Me Dead’ trailer

Writer/director Taylor Sheridan knows how to create some stark, deadly and terrifying circumstances within his films and scripts. He wrote Sicario (an underrated film) and he wrote and directed Wind River, a film which still haunts me. He is able to create these vast spaces within his stories and it feels old-fashioned yet modern. The idea of a person being stuck in a fire, or being stuck in the unforgiving natural world is nothing new. But damn, this feels new. Sheridan’s latest film is Those Who Wish Me Dead, starring Angelina Jolie, Jon Bernthal, Nicholas Hoult, Aidan Gillen (Littlefinger!!!) and Tyler Perry (Madea!!). The first trailer was just released and OMFG.

Angelina!! She looks GOOD! Do I buy her as a firefighter? Not really, but I definitely believe that she would be someone nestled in a lookout in a forest. While she’s played action-heroines many times, the action in this film will be very grounded, very realistic, especially given that they’re literally trying to outrun a forest fire AND armed assassins. Also: why even put Jon Bernthal and Angelina Jolie in the same movie if you’re not going to give them a sex scene? Come on!! There better be some action between them before the fire starts. He’s so ridiculously hot and so is she. I’m a bit surprised that Hoult is in this? This does not seem like his jam at all, but maybe he wanted to work with La Jolie and Sheridan.

Also, should we talk about Jolie’s bangs?? She’s had bangs before. While y’all know my feelings about bangs, Angelina definitely pulls them off, right?

    1) This cast is INCREDIBLY random.

    2) Considering Angelina is quite selective with her projects, this looks rather weak to me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

IKR? We haven’t seen La Jolie in quite a while and this is what we get? I was too bored to even finished watching the trailer.

    • Esmom says:

It seems so trope-y and cheesy, lol. But I’m guessing it will do pretty well, people are looking for escape.

    • lucy2 says:

I agree, maybe it’s just the trailer, but it has kind of a forgettable vibe to it.
Wind River was traumatic but excellent though, so who knows. But I don’t really feel an urge to see this.

    • Becks1 says:

I……dont know how I feel about this. Starting a forest fire to try to kill a kid or distract a ranger seems…..a little extreme. And the opening part of the trailer seemed too cheesy for words. I do like Angie with bangs though.

I haven’t seen any of his other movies, so maybe this will be better than it looks here.

A lot of her action films haven’t actually been all that great. They’ve been entertaining because she was in them. Wanted was pretty terrible, so was the Tourist and that one where she wore a terrible wig and looked like Michael Jackson for the final 1/3rd of the movie (Salt).

I’m recalling that she said whenever she has needed to feel strong in her personal life, she’s chosen a movie where she got to play a hero. So I wonder if that is what’s happening here. She gets to do action and intensity AND she plays a role where she is protecting a child.

      Dupe

  2. Mireille says:

Oh, I’m so there for this film!!!! I’ve been waiting so long to see Angie on the screen again!!!!

  3. Elizabeth says:

Angelina can pull off just about anything, IMO. This definitely looks like something I’ll be watching.

  4. Lwt00 says:

Can’t watch anything with Jon Bernthal for some reason. He makes my skin crawl.

  5. Malificent says:

Who are these forest rangers who wear full make-up (albeit tastefully neutral), including mascara, while living at the top of a fire tower?

  6. Myra says:

Angie and Jon? Now, that’s a sexy pairing. Plus, there’s Aidan, too. The cast is perfect. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen action star Angelina, so I’m really looking forward for this one.

    • dj says:

Me too. I think very sexy pairing. Plus Taylor Sheridan who wrote & directed Wind River (Elizabeth Olsen & Jeremy Renner) re: Native American girls disappearing and Yellowstone. I loved Wind River. I’m excited by this. Maybe it’s me but I happen to find (maybe so did AJ) the irony of 1) protecting a child from harm 2) the F.U. to Hollywood/BP with the title “Those Who Wish Me Dead.” I bet Ms. Jolie is laughing all the way to the bank.

  7. Lilly (with the double_L) says:

This trailer has me hooked. It’s great to feel excited about a film again, although I’m still not heading to cinema showings. I’m good with the bangs – yay! I can’t wait.

  8. Oy_Hey says:

This movie has everything I’m looking for. La Jolie. Bernthal. Nicholas Hoult.
Taylor Sheridan got incredible performances from Elizabeth Olsen and Jeremy Renner (eww tho) for Wind River.
    I’m here for this!

  9. Kimmie says:

    1. Bernthal is not hot.
    2. This trailer was a bit boring, but with believable action sequences. The storyline seems ok, so maybe it’ll be worth a watch once it leaves theaters. Hoult and Gillen are also a draw.
    3. I love La Jolie, but her face is nearly frozen. Her shocked face was the same as her conversation face.

Overall, it’s a soft pass for me, but I’d revisit once it’s on streaming.

  10. Mee yo says:

Don’t firefighters carry about 40lbs of equipment, she’d be believable if she had gained weight and muscle for the role.
Taylor Sheridan misses plot points. Sicario was good but I couldn’t stop wondering how Del Toro’s character got into a drug lords’ fortress home without being killed.

    • Rtms says:

The firefighter part is just flashbacks I think so probably only needed a week filming and some camera tricks/angles. Being in a watch tower doesn’t require a big physical investment. I do agree her face seems devoid of emotion though.

      • Agreatreckoning says:

Her character in the book (I read it 4/5 years ago) is an ex-firefighter who is now a lookout tower ranger. So the mention of flashbacks would be correct. I liked the book a lot. I have no problem with Angelina being cast as Hannah. Think she’s a pretty good choice actually. Her character went through something/s that made her emotionally shutdown and want to be away from people.

It appears to me Petyr Baelish(Aidan) & Nicholas Hoult will be playing the Blackwell brothers from the book. Really cold and ruthless killers-they DO do things to the extreme.

There are many details about forest fires, firefighting and survival skills in the book. Hope they don’t skip over all of that in the movie.

The basic premise is similar to John Grisham’s The Client.

Overall casting of this seems good and I’m looking forward to seeing this movie.

  11. Christy says:

I think it looks good! Of course, I always love the movies that get mediocre/bad reviews so I’m no gauge of its ultimate success.

  12. GrilledCorn says:

Jon Bernthal is a strong actor. I would catch this. I love women-led action films that aren’t over the top (like Atomic Blonde or The Old Guard). Grounded action. I’m not even a fan of Angie but would catch this. Will add Wind River was problematic about the First Nations characters, who had no agency, though.

  13. Bibi says:

The bangs on very dry hair doesnt cut it for me. They always put bangs on her, why? Doesnt lood good, looks like she has a wig on (she might but then it’s a bad wig)

  14. Jenn says:

    God I love her!
