Aaron Rodgers apparently does not want to be a Green Bay Packer anymore

Aaron Rodgers and Shailene Woodley made a somewhat lowkey appearance at the Kentucky Derby this weekend. Neither posted (as of this writing) any photos on their own social media, but they appeared in photos on Keleigh Sperry’s Instagram. Keleigh is Miles Teller’s wife, and Miles and Shailene are former coworkers and apparently still friendly. I feel like “going to the Kentucky Derby” is pretty off-brand for Shailene, but she’s been doing a lot of off-brand things lately, like getting engaged to a whole-ass NFL quarterback. As you can see, Shailene went with a pink jumpsuit and pink hat for the derby.

As for Shailene’s fiance, who “throws balls for a living,” there was a lot of drama last week when ESPN broke the story that Aaron doesn’t actually want to come back and play for the Green Bay Packers anymore. As of this writing, the Packers’ general manager Brian Gutekunst and Packers president Mark Murphy acknowledged that Aaron is working through some issues with the team and has been for months. The Packers organization has been emphasizing that they want Rodgers to stay for the 2021 season and beyond, but sources close to Rodgers have told ESPN that he really does NOT want to return. Rodgers’ contract with the Packers is through 2023, but he also gets paid (using a complicated salary schedule) for practicing in the off-season, and he hasn’t been doing that. He’ll only incur fines if he doesn’t show up for mini-camp in June, or training camp in July.

At the moment, Aaron Rodgers’ unhappiness with the Packers seems mostly about the internal organization of the team and the Packers’ decision to draft a certain player. But people are blaming Shailene, like maybe she’s all “I don’t want to live in Green Bay, baby.” Both things could be true, who knows. But I think Rodgers is mostly unhappy with business/football drama and it doesn’t have anything to do with Shailene.

I miss crunchy-granola Shailene!! What happened to her?? Remember how she didn’t have a cell phone, or an apartment, and just crashed on friends’ couches? Remember how she foraged her own food? Remember how she sunned her v*gina? So much more interesting then! This boring white bread version is 👎

    • Jenns says:

That Shailene wouldn’t be caught dead at the Kentucky Derby.

    • kgeo says:

I was kind of like Shailene when I was younger. I got older and realized that some things are just fun. Putting on a pink suit and a silly hat and watching horses race while you enjoy a cocktail is fun. It doesn’t mean you aren’t who you are.

    • MF1 says:

Agree! Crunchy granola Shailene was a little preachy but wayyyyyy more interesting.

I love when you guys cover sports gossip! I feel like Aaron has had issues with the organization for years since they kept putting him on the back burner for so long to placate Brett Favre’s ego. But who knows whether his relationship has anything to do with it.

The lady in the peach ensemble looks great, as does the pregnant gal. The other outfits seem to have missed the mark.

    • sunny says:

He has been big mad for awhile. He was high-key feuding with Mike McCarthy(his former head coach) who was fired in a “me or him” situation. To be fair, McCarthy seemed like a bad coach and the whole situation made them each look terrible. Aaron comes off as a bad teammate and a diva.

But in this current situation, I think he has the right to be pissed. Last year the Packers used their first round draft pick to move up and draft another QB even though they just lost in the conference title game which was basically like putting Rodgers on notice they were looking around because they thought he would be done soon. The organization has routinely treated him dismissively so I get why he might want to move especially with his fiancee in California.

What I love about the whole thing is that his team leaked this story the week of the draft. That is high key petty. lol!

      • Lizzie Bathory says:

I thought I remembered they drafted another QB (I don’t follow too closely but my husband is big into the NFL, so I see the draft & talk around the league). Thanks for the extra info. Can’t blame Rodgers for being mad about all of that. These guys are so bitchy with each other sometimes lol.

Aaron is 37 and at the tail end of his career. He’s got a few good years left barring injury, but it is time for the Packers to start thinking ahead. He also has been making making moves as to what he wants to do after football and they seem media/Hollywood adjacent so I’m not sure what Green Bay is supposed to do here? LaFleur gave him a lot more power in the organization than McCarthy did, but his call on the last play of the season was baffling- not going for it on 4th down when up against Brady; you have a man behind center than can and has worked miracles! (I’m still salty on that one) If they had won the Super Bowl last year, I genuinely think Rodgers would have retired and it would have been the Disneyland fairytale ending. I think the Packers front office is calling his bluff a bit because they also know most NFL teams are not as flush with cash as they were pre-pandemic. He’s going to cost a team a lot of money and then there’s not much left to stack the deck with. The team will make a ton of money, but I doubt there’ll be another Brady situation next year.

      • Humbugged says:

        Chicken Tetrazzini

Thing is he has always moved back to LA during off season (as does Bakhtiari). He bought Robbie Wiliams house in Malibu for $25m before Shailene turned up .3 of the women in the photo are from LA – Miles’ wife ,Shai and Frankie who is Bak’s fiancee who he met at Colorado Uni – and Bak and Rodgers come from North Cali

      • Kelly says:

I live in Wisconsin, but grew up in Illinois as a Bears fan. Brett Favre, Rodgers’ predecessor as QB #1 in Green Bay, was untouchable and put on a pedestal until he went to Minnesota. Favre during his time in Green Bay had documented gambling and prescription drug issues, but those were spun by the media as small human failings and things he overcame. After he left, the gloves came off and so much tea was spilled about how his high maintenance and diva behavior, including demanding his own separate locker room, and his good old boy, humble guy schickt was just an act. The Wisconsin media, including newspapers, TV and radio, had probably known about it for years but never reported on it for fear of losing access to Favre and the Packers. This was before Favre’s sexting came out while with the Giants, so it makes you wonder if he had been doing something similar in Green Bay.

Rodgers’ frustration with the Packers is well documented and has come up most off seasons for the past half decade. In his defense, Mike McCarthy should have been gone a couple years before he finally got fired. Rodgers, other than the Jordan Love draft pick, has seemed happier under LaFleur. He also seems a lot smarter than Favre, which doesn’t take much, so hopefully he learned from Favre’s mistakes and wasn’t nearly as high maintenance.

I do think that Rodgers will be back in Green Bay but next year will be his last year with the Packers.

Say what you want about Brady and some of his views, for his time with Patriots, he was an exemplary employee of the organization. He took the blame for deflategate, which probably was made by the coaching staff. He was very careful to never seem publicly critical of the organization, even when their decisions didn’t work out. You can criticize him for his politics and his weird diet, but he didn’t create drama by complaining about his team and organization like Rodgers does.

  3. Becks1 says:

Maybe he just wants to go host Jeopardy full time lol.

I honestly don’t think it has anything to do with Shailene, I think there are some other issues with the organization and Rodgers wants out.

  4. Case says:

I think it might have to do with Shailene, but not bc she doesn’t want to live in Green Bay. If their pap walks and Disney advertisements are any indication, I think Aaron is with her bc he’s looking for a boost in his celebrity beyond being an athlete.

    • Humbugged says:

He lives in LA he has a mansion in Malibu . Bak also has property in Cali

And her best friend lives on the other side of the Lakes in Ontario.

And they went to Disney once after being together for nearly a year where are these many pap walks – they touted him being on Jeopardy for a day .And this was not really a pap walk as he goes every year as does Brady

  5. Brittany says:

The lack of masks at the derby was astonishing to me… how do people think this is okay?

    • Dee says:

Staff at Churchill Downs had the inenviable task of telling people to wear their masks. They were ignored. The Derby is mostly outdoors, luckily, and at half capacity this year. Also, it’s a lot of rich tourists, so difficult to tell them what to do. Louisville’s mayor and Kentucky’s governor have been vigilant about masking and social distancing since the beginning of the pandemic and have saved many Kentuckians. But this is also the state which elects Rand Paul and MItch McConnell, so. . .

    • Amelie says:

Yeah that was the one thing that stood out to me when I watched the Derby this year. Supposedly it was reduced capacity (I checked, more than 50 000 attended so I’m not sure how that is “reduced”) but it looked pretty crowded to me and the vast majority of people were unmasked. I’m sure most of them were vaccinated but it just made everyone look tone deaf. They supposedly had mask enforcers but they seemed to mostly ignored. I get the CDC just announced you can not wear a mask if you are vaccinated outdoors in uncrowded spaces but omg. Luckily I’m not into sports and can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve been to a sporting event by choice.

    • Humbugged says:

Well Aaron was there with his teamate and his fiancee who were on lockdown for the entire year with him so those 4 for sure are vaccinated .And Miles and his wife are probably vaccinated as he is still working and him and Shailene are just about to work on a film with William Hurt playing husband and wife

  6. Lex says:

The fans that are blaming Shailene are being ridiculous and purposely obtuse. Rodgers has been annoyed at the GB organization for awhile now, they’ve been low key feuding about draft picks and trades. If anything, Aaron is probably dreaming of now hosting Jeopardy and then side hustling to SF or somewhere close.

    • ThatgirlThere says:

The fans always blamed his girlfriends. From Olivia, to Danika and now Shailene. They tried to do that a little bit here in N.E. with Tom and Giselle. Remember fan is short for fanatic and that’s what they are in Greenbay.

      • Liz version 700 says:

Poor Jessica Simpson got blamed because she dated a Dallas quarterback who lost some big games too. It is ridiculous to blame the girlfriends.

    • NotSoSocialButterfly says:

Yep. He has acknowledged wanting to be back in Cali, and I think he’s angling for more HWD connections/ networking (he was thrilled with doing jeopardy) for something more permanent while angling for more money from the Packers org to finish his contract. He’s late thirties now, I’d think his shoulder and elbow wouldn’t want to continue for long. FWIW, the organization intends to keep him on throughout his contract (which means more $).

  7. Pam says:

Um…let’s be frank here. It’s a bearding arrangement. I’m sure his decision has nothing to do with Shailene, who’s probably living a separate life, anyway.

    • ThatgirlThere says:

How do you know it’s a bearding situation? What would be the reason for Shailene to be anyone’s beard or for him to be hers? Do you have inside info?

    • Case says:

I agree. I’m fascinated by bearding in Hollywood.

    • Betsy says:

People say this for just about everyone.

    • SurelyNot says:

Insisting this dude HAS to be gay is just gross.

      • whatWHAT? says:

and what evidence or indication is there that he is?

I keep reading how all of his GFs have been beards but what is the logic behind that? what makes people say or think that?

      • Chicken Tetrazzini! says:

There have been some rumors about his roommate being his boyfriend and it not being a well kept secret. I would love to get to a point where if a man was crazy talented on the field his sexuality wouldn’t matter, but we’re not there yet

    • Willow says:

So, his beard is like a good luck token? You know, like that guy in mythology who lost all his strength when someone shaved his head. Because this, ooohhh, she’s his beard, it’s a Hollywood contract relationship gossip, is so tired. Come on, if you don’t like the guy at least come up with a less obvious dig.

  8. Veronika says:

Genuine question: why is he considered hot?
Not referring to his football skills, bank account, personality, etc.
I’m just talking looks… because I do NOT get it.

  9. Tom says:

Go Pack and f da Bears!

  10. Riley says:

As a diehard Minnesota Vikings fan, I may be biased, but… Aaron has always had a “difficult” reputation. He’s a great player, but has a “me me me” attitude that a lot of other players find hard to work with. Add the fact that he was Favre’s understudy for many many years, and now Green Bay has drafted another quarterback… I’m not surprised that he wants out.

  11. Ann says:

I think the woman on the far right in the hot pink ensemble looks kind of spectacular. She’s beautiful which doesn’t hurt, and she really went for it. It’s a little OTT but then so is getting all dressed up to hang around outside in the mud and drink all day waiting for a bunch of horses to run a race that takes less than two minutes.

    • Humbugged says:

They had a box this year .Brady and his lot were 3 boxes away

This is a weekend thing .They rent a house and shack up there and get hammered all weekend and smoke cigars

That is Miles’ wife and as well as being his friend she is also friends with Shai who was at there wedding and they spent time in Paris with her wen she was living there

  12. TheOriginalMia says:

Blaming Shailene is misogynistic. The fans know damn well Aaron has been pissed with the organization for years. Drafting Jordan Love with the 1st pick baffled everybody. Aaron needed weapons and instead, they get a QB that is going to ride the bench. In spite of his obvious displeasure with the GM, he took them to the NFC Championship game. So yeah, he’s still pissy. They’ve done nothing to improve the team overall, so he’s ready to bounce. Whether it’s to Denver, where Shailene lives part time or California, he’s gone. GB is getting the situation they created. Hope Jordan Love is ready.

    • Humbugged says:

Is she in Colorado though ?She lived in France for 2 years and ended up living in GB once she met Aaron

    • Agreatreckoning says:

@TheOriginalMia, Kind of agree with your assessment. Think it’s being referred to as Rodgers Gate now and is at Defcon 4. I would not be surprised if he didn’t play for Green Bay or anyone else this year.

    • Humbugged says:

      TheOriginalMia

Says who ? Internet gossip from Bronco Fans? She has friends that live (Xiuhtezcatl Martinez) there but has no house

She was in France for 2 years (fact is she was on Ellen taking about it and drinking wine at 11am ),was shacked up with her brother and then in GB .

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqTZKcZaUh4

So where did this house come from and why Colorado .Girl in from LA as does her parents /brother and her beststie and her kid lives directly across from her in Canada

    • Kelly says:

Shailene Woodley doesn’t deserve to be the Yoko Ono in this drama.

      • Agreatreckoning says:

Agree. Shailene should not be coming up in these conversations because the animosity between Rodgers & Gutenkust (and if connections are true-Gutenkust is not liked or respected by many) happened way before she might have been a twinkle in Rodgers’s eyes. My husband said they both can be arrogant pricks. The difference is one of the pricks can win a game, the other prick signed a one year contract to Kevin King after a horrible, inexplicable performance in a major game. Gutenkust is not respected in his decision making and rumors suggest that Lafleur could find a better job elsewhere too.

  13. ItReallyIsYouNotMe says:

Is it just me or is it strange that Shailene’s friend is touching her stomach that way? I don’t love to bump watch for all the reasons we have discussed in the past, but that pose struck me as being in on a secret.

  14. SusanRagain says:

Minnesota here, and if Rogers leaves GB, Please can the Vikings have him?
MN Vikings have gone to 3 SB and lost every.damn.time.
We have never won a SB Championship, even when we picked Favre up off the retirement heap.
(Btw, Favre showed no class at all during his time here. And those d*ck pics he was sending? Nothing to see here, move along.)

Aaron Rogers is a good QB. At 37 he could play 1-3 years yet if he avoids injury.
Minnesota should throw a big amount of money at him. Now.

Why does anyone care if he is gay or not?
All the beard talk seems old fashioned and out of date to me and I’m almost 60.
I don’t care about anybodies sex life, unless they are making out in a public restaurant in front of me while I’m eating. I hate that.

    • Agreatreckoning says:

@Susan, Football fans really don’t care about anything outside of winning. Adam Schefter had to back walk his draft day reports. As a GB fan, I’m always weery? of what I read. I’ll admit that the Favre/Rodgers drama was annoying….I was on Favre’s side. Rodgers proved himself over and over again. Love the gossip amongst all the things. Currently, I don’t favor Aaron as a Jeopary host, A. Cooper is a natural.
