So they could only effectively replace Samantha by having 3 people? So we all know who was carrying this show and so do the producers apparently. Also, as a BIPOC woman I’m super offended that this show, which was problematically white in retrospect, now deigns to have brown people but only as a smoke show to cover for their debacles with Kim Catrall…I already wasn’t watching but thanks for also killing any lingering morbid curiosity.

    • Lexilla says:

Yeah, I cannot see how this will go well.

    • Anna says:

      All of this @Oy_Hey

    • Seraphina says:

Yes, I don’t see how they could have thought that was going to help in way shape or form.

    • Emmitt says:

Even if they didn’t have problems with Kim Cattrall, I can’t see Samantha being as close to the group as time went on. She would’ve gotten tired of Charlotte’s chatter about her children and the recital and the pony lessons and the PTA etc etc etc and she wouldn’t have wanted to hear about Brady’s trials and tribulations either.

Samantha also would’ve gotten tired of Miranda, Charlotte and Carrie bellyaching about their husbands and married life. She would’ve grown tired of hearing why they couldn’t hang out with her because of Rose’s play or Brady’s game or Big just wants to stay in.

So, the invites would’ve slowed to a stop. They still would’ve been friends (at least I think Samantha would’ve still been friends with Carrie and probably Miranda but not Charlotte), they just wouldn’t hang out anymore.

That’s life and any woman who is the unmarried, childless friend to women who are married/partnered and/or have children know unless you accept the husband and children as part of the deal, you will get phased out (or you’ll phase yourself out). That’s life and I think it’s a story that needs to be told, although I don’t know that SJP and the SATC writers are the ones who can really tell it.

      • Mac says:

I’m partner and I are kid free and most of our close friends are too. I stay in touch with friends who have kids, but right now we are living totally different lives.

      • Lenni says:

My best friend is single and I love it to just be me with her. No need to talk about my family.

      • Anna says:

This has been my experience, totally. “you will get phased out (or you’ll phase yourself out)” It’s no judgement either way (saying that for the inevitable defenses that will result from @Emmitt post). It’s just a facet of life that many have experienced. To be honest, when friends or close family have told me they are either getting married or especially when they announce pregnancy, I have learned to make space not only for celebrating their joy but also for my own private moments of grieving what we had. It’s true. I feel so happy for them and for a new nibbling to spoil since I do love the offspring and like being an auntie whether by family or friendship, but there is a mourning that I’ve learned to honor and accept for myself, privately, knowing that things will not be the same and also that elements of the friendship that I may have depended on such as an ear or shoulder, will probably not be there anymore or in very limited supply. Your own friendship wishes and needs will always be lowest on the list now, and that’s natural. Family and baby will and should come first. But it’s also normal and fine to recognize that loss even as one is also happy for the loved ones and sharing their joy.

      • Emmitt says:

I could see Miranda not wanting to talk about Steve or Brady when hanging out with Samantha, but Charlotte would be yammering on and on about her girls and what they did in school that day or the horrid woman on the PTA or Harry’s back hair and Samantha would tire of it. I think Samantha would also get tired of Carrie blaring on about what Big did or what Big said or wondering what Big meant.

For me, the only way the 3 new women (regardless of race) would work is if they are also parterned and/or have children. If they are hanging out with 3 single women and discussing sex, then that leads to why can’t they hang out with Samantha?

I just don’t buy that in their 50s, these 3 women would befriend women of color unless there was a good reason for it (the women were people they already knew, the women are fellow parents at their kids’ school, job related etc).

After that 2nd horrible, racist movie, I just don’t buy that these writers can come up with a plausible story to explain this.

And again, the only one I can see credibly having a friend that’s a woman of color is Miranda. Perhaps Miranda chews out somebody, somebody calls her a Karen, she exclaims she’s not a Karen, she tells Steve and he says yeah, you can be a bit of a Karen, she goes back to the person and apologizes and perhaps a friendship ensues?

      • lucy2 says:

I’ve been there! It happened with friends I had since grade school. We had occasional get togethers, dinners out, then all the wedding and baby showers, and would hang out at someone’s house when the kids were little. Then it all slowed down. I tried for a while, inviting them to bring the kids here to the beach for a day, or suggesting we meet for dinner, and the response was always “yeah, we should!” then nothing. I haven’t seen all but one of them in several years, and I know they’ve gotten together without me. The one I’m still close-ish with once told me they were phasing out some of her husband’s friends because they “didn’t have kids and didn’t get it”. I was like, hello? That’s me too!
I’ve often felt I should take a page from Carrie’s book and throw myself an “I’m Single” shower after all the wedding and baby gifts I got them all over the years!

      • Amando says:

I’m going through this now. Being phased out I mean. My BFF is getting married and having her first child. I am single with no children. It sucks. I don’t know why people in relationships don’t realize the importance of having friends outside of their relationship.

Anna, thank you for your comment. I went through a “grieving” period after I found out she was pregnant. I felt very selfish feeing that way, but I’m glad I’m not alone. She and I were always “the single girls” and I felt left behind and had to mourn that.

      • swirlmamad says:

My best friend since childhood does not have kids and was just very recently married. We’re still as close as we possibly could be, considering we don’t live physically close to each other and the pandemic. We don’t go out for dinner and drinks every weekend like we did in our single 20s, but we text (even if it’s just briefly) almost every day and FT/Zoom every few weeks, and she’s the best pseudo-auntie to my kids. Just to say that a phase-out isn’t inevitable if one friend marries. More like your friendship evolves with age but can still be as strong as it ever was.

    • minx says:

SJP just can’t let go of a show where her character attracted hot men and she dressed in couture. It’s a laughable vanity project. I respect KC for moving on, moving ahead, and refusing to be involved in that embarrassment.

      • Rainbow says:

        100% agree, minx!

      • Eating Popcorn says:

And it’s not just KC who has moved on, Big (Chris Noth) is also not returning…

      • Snappyfish says:

I rewatched the first 2 episodes last night & I am embarrassed that I continued to watch it years ago. A couple of things were evident. Kim Cattrall was really stunning which probably pissed off SJP & that Carrie was always a sucky friend. SJP had been around for ever (child star) & outside of Hocus Pocus & the first wives club (where she was supporting better actresses) she has never really had a hit movie (SATC 1 did well because people wanted to see what happened next & to say SATC2 was awful is kind) her biggest success was SATC & she can’t let go.

      • Merricat says:

        ITA

    • Eleonor says:

SATC was groundbreaking for a lot of reasons, but problematic and it hasn’t aged well.
I really enjoyed it at the time, but I don’t want to see a revival, and the studios should stop with this trend: FFS make new series!
Kim Cathrall said NO, and that was the best thing to do.

  2. Nikki says:

Re: SATC. No need to bring us into this mess. We’re still mad for Jennifer Hudson.

    • Anna says:

      x 100000

    • Mac says:

My first thought was of JHud. What a mess.

    • goofpuff says:

Yes, it’s just going to be supporting BIPOC characters whose stories all suck and serve only to embiggen Carrie or Miranda or Charlotte and show how “woke” they are. When in reality the ‘woke’ stories will be cringe-worthy and pretty much leave the BIPOC to be just set pieces. Much like the original SATC was.

      • Anna says:

Yup. Some white women never learn and don’t want to… BIPOC are tired of being props in other people’s story lines.

      • Still_Sarah says:

@ Anna : re : props in storylines. This reminds me of Harvey Fierstein once saying a great line about gay actors should not always be stuck playing the “crazy neighbour” of the main character role.

    • HandforthParish says:

I’d erased that from my memory.
That Vu-ttone comment was the worst.

  3. Emmitt says:

What they should do is bring in 2 POC characters from the past. They could bring in the Margaret Cho fashion show character (doesn’t need to be played by Margaret Cho), they could have Miranda continuing to be friends with the black woman in her building who loaned her the baby chair and then bring in a brand new woman. The only one of the three that I could realistically see befriending a non-white person would be Miranda. I could definitely see Miranda befriending some of the other moms at Brady’s school or if Brady was on some sort of team.

    Charlotte? No.

Carrie? Only if it was somebody connected to her job or fashion, like the Margaret Cho character.

    • Lex says:

Bringing back the chair woman would be really random. She was in it about 5 seconds, and Miranda moved to a whole other borough after that

  4. Regina Falangie says:

I cannot stand Sarah Jessica Parker and she needs to stop beating the long dead horse that is SATC.

That said, I worked my ass off for a company for little pay, no raises or respect and when I left that position they hired 3 people to do the job I did alone. That was the only compliment that they ever gave me. I kicked so much ass they needed 3 people to do my job. Clearly the same can be said for Kim Catrall.

Do I think they are using people of color as props and window dressing so they can point and claim diversity ? Yep and it’s disgusting.

    • Anna says:

Yup. Disgusting and we see right through it.

      • BothSidesNow says:

And no one is interested in another SATC anything!! Go on and find jobs doing anything BUT this!!

    • Mac says:

I once left a job and my boss had to step in until a replacement could be found and she constantly complained she couldn’t maintain the daily pace. She should have paid me what I wanted. I was a good deal.

    • Rainbow says:

Regina, well said. The work culture was most probably toxic as Kim has said. As recently as 2018 Michael Patrick King was busy throwing her under the bus for refusing to sign on to the 3rd film (another disaster like the 2nd, probably) in some interview, going on about how Cynthia and Kristen “came into the light” and saw SJP was the “star” and became “family,” whereas Kim wouldn’t because she wanted parity. It was disgusting, manipulative language, totally inappropriate for a work context. This stuff resonates with me because I have experienced similar things at work (but not to this scale).

Hello? The audience, judging from commenters across different gossip sites, agree she should have had pay parity. The fact you couldn’t get a 3rd film made underscored the fact Kim should have been paid the same as SJP. In fact, it was an ensemble thing. They should have all been paid the same. And not only didn’t they recognise Kim had a legitimate claim; they kept leaking against her to blame her for daring to ask for better pay. The disparity was gargantuan; you can look up the figures.

  5. Seraphina says:

they need to just let it go. Times change and people change. Stop with holding on.

  6. tealily says:

Will it be a “Black Carrie-type,” a, “Asian Miranda-type,” and a “Latinx Charlotte-type” for them to play off of at brunch? Because that is 100% what I’m picturing. JFC

  7. nicegirl says:

    Enough already, Sjp.

  8. SlipperyPeople says:

I hope the show has diversity in the writing room as well.

  9. Chaine says:

Re: SATC, Too Little Too Late.

  10. SusanRagain says:

    Not interested at all.
SATC was a good show in it’s time.
SJP needs a new hobby. Let SATC go already. Both movies were awful!

  11. StellainNH says:

Zoe Kravitz movie, didn’t Sandra Bullock’s movie, The Net, have a similar plot line?

  12. Betsy says:

I say it on all these threads: I would love to see the SATC universe without Carrie. She was, undoubtedly, the worst character with the absolute least amount of personal growth over the seasons, learning nothing about herself or her place in the world.

Of course Kim Cattrall is beyond that all now and who can blame her? I just think that she was the most interesting character (even though I am very much a Miranda/Charlotte person in real life) and I would have liked to have see her do more. But clearly SJP had such hatred for Kim that she was willing to kill the franchise with that ghastly second movie.

    • Anna says:

Yes! Agreed. The series would continue on in wonderful new ways if Carrie wasn’t part of it (specifically if SJP weren’t part of it).

    • Amando says:

Hmmm…to be fair, Sam was the same. She was fun, but selfish just like Carrie. I recently rewatched the series and I think of others here did too, they’d see Sam in a different light as well. Sam treated Miranda terribly after she had Brady.

      • Maria says:

        I don’t agree.
Samantha never judged Carrie for her affair with Big, she had trouble accepting Miranda’s life as a mother but she gave up that expensive waitlisted salon visit to Miranda and babysat Brady (and helped defend Miranda in Atlantic City, and she was there for Miranda at her mother’s funeral even though it took her effort to express her emotions), she helped console Charlotte during her sex troubles with Trey (after reconciling their argument).
Samantha had her life and priorities and issues but she was a true friend.

  13. Sigmund says:

Yeah, to quote further up, I don’t think using BIPOC as set pieces is the way to go here. That’s just token woke bullsh*t. Let SATC rest, and let’s focus on shows that feature diverse main characters as agents in their own lives and stories.

  14. observing says:

The second Sex and the City movie was really bad. I don’t expect this to go well….

In the case of this show, the writing tends to go downhill when they make an attempt at including (diverse) perspectives that aren’t really as shallow as Carrie’s

  16. Keats says:

That Fan Bingbing Met Gala look is just exquisite.

  17. They better have writers of color as well, because that Jennifer Hudson character Michael Patrick King wrote was a hot mess.

  18. Keroppi says:

I haven’t really followed Noel Clarke’s career, but apparently he is well-known in the UK and just received a BAFTA (that was since rescinded). But reading the stories of the 20+ women is so disheartening and enraging! I absolutely believe the women and kudos to the Guardian journalists for their well-researched article that exposed him!

  19. The Recluse says:

Considering how bad the last film’s script was….this is going to be a tone deaf train wreck.

  20. Sarcasm101 says:

SJP needs to LET IT GOOOOO. Maybe do charity work or something. God she’s pathetic.

  21. Jezebel's Lacefront says:

No amount of “characters of color” will make me return as a viewer. I’m over the show. It’s time to move on.

    • shanaynay says:

I agree. It is definitely time to move on. Why is SJP holding on so tightly to this show? After the first movie, which was just okay to me, I wouldn’t watch anything else regarding SATC.

      • Jezebel's Lacefront says:

Instant cash? I don’t know. Sarah’s talented. She can produce or even direct a new show, if she wanted. I wish her happiness, but she needs to find new ventures.

  22. Mcmmom says:

Isn’t Charlotte raising an Asian daughter? If so, I would hope the writers would clue in that Charlotte’s world should be more multicultural.

I liked the show and never watched the movies, so I don’t really know what I’m talking about. 🤷🏻‍♀️

  23. JillyBean says:

It’s pretty bad when fans of the show… do not want any reboot to happen. Leave it in the 90s
