There’s been an ‘unfortunate lapse of contact’ between Prince Charles & Harry

Britain's Prince Charles visits MINI plant in Oxford

For all of the talk about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex informing Queen Elizabeth about the birth of Lilibet Diana, there has once again been a Prince Charles-sized hole in the conversation. That’s quite common these days – it seems like the “money” reporting focuses on the Sussexes’ relations with the Queen and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Meanwhile, Charles remains an enigma. On the rare occasions where he is included in the reporting, they’re making it sound like he’s pissed off at Harry and Meghan, and other times like he genuinely hopes they come back. We don’t know if Harry called his father about Lili’s birth, but the scrambling from the royal social media accounts suggested that no calls were made to Clarence House. Still, Charles tried to sound like a proud grandfather in a speech at the BMW Mini factory in Oxford on Tuesday. During his speech, he said:

“The development of technology like electric vehicles … is vital for maintaining the health of our world for future generations, something I am only too aware of today, having recently become a grandfather for the fifth time. Such happy news really does remind one of the necessity of continued innovation in this area — especially around sustainable battery technology — in view of the legacy we bequeath to our grandchildren.”

[From Page Six]

LOL, smooth. He sounds like a man who has not seen his son or grandchildren in the better part of 18 months. Again, I do wonder if any calls were exchanged between Clarence House and Montecito. Us Weekly’s source says that there’s been a “lapse” in contact between Charles and Harry as well:

Room for improvement. Prince Harry‘s relationship with his father Prince Charles might still be strained — but there is hope that the two will be able to reconcile, Princess Diana‘s former voice coach, Stewart Pearce, exclusively told Us Weekly.

“As far as Meghan and Harry were concerned, they were ‘troubled’ by the lack of support received from the ‘men in grey suits,’ namely the household staff, and then the unfortunate lapse of contact with his father [Prince Charles],” Pearce told Us about the father-son conflict. Charles is well known for distancing himself from emotional heightened situations as he is a very caring, sensitive man, and therefore chooses to wait to let strong feelings settle down before responding.”

[From Us Weekly]

Considering Charles is well-known for hand-writing letters and notes, I genuinely wonder if that is possibly how Charles is communicating with Harry and Meghan these days. We know Charles and Harry barely spoke at Prince Philip’s funeral, but it’s possible that letters are being sent back and forth. That would actually be a throwback to how Prince Philip handled things – he often sent letters to members of the family. Philip and Diana communicated through letters consistently for years. And Harry has said that he would like to heal this relationship with his father. I don’t know. It will be interesting to see if there is any confirmation (either way) from Palace d’Montecito about whether Harry called his dad after Lili Diana was born.

  1. Hell Nah! says:

“Unfortunate lapse…”?? No, not to my thinking. Charles pulled his son’s security at the most vulnerable time for Harry and his family. That is the move of a manipulative, cold-hearted scumbag. I hope Harry and Meghan never give him the time of day, nor access to their children for the rest of his sorry life.

Add in how he treated Harry’s mother and..yeah, Charles deserves the worst.

    • sunny says:

“Unfortunate” seems such a pointed choice of wording. It makes it seem like is was accidental, due to whims of fortune as opposed to calculated decision-making.

      • Liz version 700 says:

Unfortunate is a weighty word indeed. It stands in for “I am a narcissist and terrible parent and now my son has to avoid me for his mental health and the safety of his family.”

      • Jay says:

Mistakes were made. It was unfortunate.

Classic accountability dodge used by liars everywhere.

    • Charles is a very weird contradiction of always seeing himself as the victim and yet always thinking himself the most important person in the room. I think KAISER’s top photo just shows what a total ass he is and how extremely bad his judgment can be. As a statesman and future —be all/end all king —- should he really make a silly joke of a mask when millions of people have died from COVID?

Also, the fact that he only uses old, public photos on his media feed when mentioning the Sussexes shows just how uninvolved he is in their lives.

And finally, “Princess Diana’s former voice coach”…..REALLY? What the hell would he know about anything to do with Harry and his father? Seems the press is really scraping the bottom of the barrel. Next we’ll get the janitor’s opinion who cleaned the maternity room when Harry was born. I’m sure that insight would be just as valuable and relevant to this issue.

      • MerryGirl says:

I though the same thing. Good grief, Princess Di’s former voice coach? He hasn’t been in the loop for more than 25 years FFS.

    • marehare says:

Charlie looks like he drinks a lot of booze. He’s a creep who cheated on his wife, making her miserable during their whole marriage.

  2. Rapunzel says:

I read this title as “unfortunate lapse of conduct” and I think that works as well. This is ridiculous conduct from a father. Charles should be excited and proud for Harry, but is incapable of that. Sad.

  3. Lady D says:

You could say that about Charles and every member of his family from his parents down to his 21st cousins.

  4. The Hench says:

“Princess Diana‘s former voice coach, Stewart Pearce, exclusively told Us Weekly.”

Wow. Diana died 24 years ago. And yet Mr Pearce is still sallying forth to give, sorry, sell his ‘opinions’.

Do we really think that this man is in any way positioned to know anything? I mean props for going on the record and not as a ‘palace source’ or ‘royal insider’ but seriously? This just demonstrates to me what a feeding frenzy it is to sell stuff to the media when someone who has been out of the loop for at least a quarter of a century has the brass neck to be quoted.

    • HannahB says:

That is so very true. And yet those “in the palace,” who work for an institution supporting the queen, remain nameless. Truly shameful, and very telling that the British media have to go so far afield to find someone willing (for $) to put a name to a statement.

  5. Keke says:

How would a voice coach know about the relationship between Chuck and Harry?

  6. Nina says:

    Charles is very caring??

  7. Amy Bee says:

This latest episode regarding Lili’s name tells me that there is no relationship between Harry and Charles. It’s clear that the courtiers answer to Charles only and do his bidding. He doesn’t like that Harry named his daughter after the Queen. It also proves Meghan was telling the truth when she talked about Charles not wanting Archie to have a title when he becomes King. He was the person behind banning Harry’s participation in late years Remembrance day series not the Queen.

    • Becks1 says:

Yeah the title thing was definitely from Charles, I do think William played a role in that too though – I think he wants his kids to be the only princes/princess running around.

      That family is so toxic.

      • Amy Bee says:

@Becks1: Charles and William worked together against Harry and Meghan. It’s the reason why they are reportedly closer than ever now. There is no doubt Charles sanctioned everything that William did. With Charles as regent, the power lies with him.

      • Becks1 says:

@AmyBee I do think they worked together (if they didnt and William was just going rogue, then Charles really is inept and useless since he couldn’t stop it).

But again we’re back to what Harry himself said – that he wants to work on his relationship with his father; his relationship with William is “space.” Maybe that’s just a sense of loyalty to his father, but its clear that Harry is angrier at William than Charles, although he and Charles arent on good terms right now obviously. So even with the title issue, security issue, leaking, all that – Harry wants to repair his relationship with Charles. he doesnt have the same desire re: his relationship with William.

like i said, this family is toxic.

      • iconoclast59 says:

@Becks1, I think Harry cuts Charles a little more slack because he knows how his father was raised. Harry expects a lot more from William because they grew up side-by-side, and William of all people should understand where Harry’s coming from. Harry’s disappointment in William is much keener.

      • Amy Too says:

Becks, I also wonder if he wants to work on things with his dad while just having space with William because his dad is in his 70s already and even though the Windsors seem to live forever, it’s not unreasonable to think that Charles could die soon and therefore it’s more of a priority for Harry to work on the relationship with his dad before his brother. William can be put on hold, “space,” for awhile because he’s going to be around for decades. Charles, even if he lives to be 100, could become sick or frail or senile relatively soon, unable to travel to come see Harry and Meghan and the babies in their new home, participate in things the Sussexes might want to invite him to, whatever else.

I’m also wondering if there’s some kind of element of Harry needing to get Charles “on his side” or at least not actively working against him first, in order to be able to deal with William. Like maybe Harry needs Charles as an ally, or at least as a neutral party, to help him get through to Will about how destructive Will’s behavior, bus throwing, and ultra leaky ways really are for the family as a whole, the institution, and his relationship with Harry.

  8. Snuffles says:

“ Charles is well known for distancing himself from emotional heightened situations as he is a very caring, sensitive man, and therefore chooses to wait to let strong feelings settle down before responding.””

TRANSLATION: Charles is a coward who sticks his head in the sand when the going gets tough. Then instructs his people to talk for him because he can’t face the consequences of what he’s done.

    • Amy Bee says:

Charles is no coward he’s jealous of the close relationship between his mother and Harry. Something he had never had. Charles is behind the scenes attempting to distance the Queen from Harry and he was a willing participant in the smear campaign against Harry and Meghan. He leaked to press that Harry wanted to leave the UK. He’s no innocent here.

      • Carmen-JamRock says:

        @Amy Bee
So youve established that charles is a bully. We all agree with that. But youve also made @snuffles point, because bullies are notorious cowards. Its their cowardice and shame and fear of people finding out about their cowardice, fear and shame that make them lash out; and do all the other cr@p cowards do.

    • Ann says:

You can’t have it both ways. If you’re caring and sensitive, that means you are there for the people who need you even when it’s difficult, not that you run away from them because it makes you squeamish.

    • molly says:

Charles is a coward, but I think he’s can’t be Charles the Dad/Grandpa instead of Charles the Future King. Harry seems to be able to have a relationship with the Queen that stays leak-free and private. Not something Charles appears to be able to do. Everything goes through courtiers and then ultimately and leaked/planted so it plays out in the press.

I don’t blame Harry and Meghan one bit for not talking to Charles.

      • Amy Too says:

That’s interesting. I wonder if the Queen is able to separate from her role and just be grandma sometimes bc she’s been Queen forever and therefore it’s not such a big deal to her. Whereas Charles has been waiting and waiting and waiting his entire life to become king, preparing, thinking about how much of a special king he’s going to be. He’s so wrapped up in the King image because he doesn’t actually have it yet, but desperately wants it, and that’s why he can’t act as just Dad/grandpa, he always acts as King Charles. Like he’s afraid to mire his reign before it even starts by being too soft/human/un-king-like? He’s trying to convince everyone that he’s ready and worthy and monarchical because he’s had way too many years to “prepare” and think about his reign, as opposed to Liz who has just *been* the Queen for decades and decades and is therefore not so obsessed with proving that she’s worthy of the title.

  9. Eurydice says:

Such lovely weasel words – “unfortunate lapse of contact” – like it just came about from outside forces, the pandemic, quarantines, all so unfortunate, nothing to see here…

And poor, poor Charles. So very sensitive, waiting a year and a half for all those strong feelings to settle down. Sure, Charles – keep waiting.

    • Carmen-JamRock says:

Its a quintessential british trait. (Sowwy celeBrits) Their go-to sentence structure always uses the passive tense. Which explains why theyre experts at being passive-aggressive in general.

  10. Becks1 says:

So I’m interpreting the line about “lapses in contact” to refer to the time last year when Charles stopped taking his calls, because its in context of the lack of support from the courtiers, and then mentions that.

I do wonder if they are in contact now, I can see letters being more Charles’s speed but I can also imagine Harry being worried about anything leaking.

I do feel like he told Charles about the birth before the press release though – maybe just before, but I don’t think Harry would let his father find out that way, since we know Harry has said he wants to work on their relationship.

    • Amy Bee says:

Becks: Charles was one who leaked Harry’s plans to leave to the Sun. Harry couldn’t tell Charles about Lili’s birth prior to the announcement it would have been leaked to the press. it likely that Charles is angry that he wasn’t told sooner and now has told the courtiers to brief against Harry.

      • Becks1 says:

I think William leaked it. It was Dan Wootton who had it, that’s not one of Charles’ go-to sources. If Charles had leaked it, I think it would have been to someone else.

but I think charles was okay with William leaking it.

And I said “maybe just before” the announcement which wouldn’t give Charles time to leak to the press about it.

      • Amy Bee says:

@Becks: Charles is not innocent. Harry was told by Clarence House to put his plans on paper and they were promptly leaked to the Sun. It’s likely that Charles gave it to William to leak to the sun.

      • Becks1 says:

I am not saying Charles is innocent. I am not a Charles stan and I don’t think he is helpless. I said that I think William leaked it because of who had the story – Dan Wootton. And then you said that as well – that William leaked it to the sun.

  11. Tessa says:

It’s amazing how Charles keeps getting a free pass–he said far worse about the Queen and Philip.

    • Liz version 700 says:

And he has done things as bad as anything his parents did. He is incredibly selfish

  12. Tessa says:

Charles just sat back and watched Kate not deny the crying story, William’s PR stunt with Flybe, and letting William drive Harry out.

    • MsIam says:

Too “emotionally heightened” for him I guess.

    • Nedsdag says:

You also forgot the bigger story: staying silent while some d-bag “journalist” Tweets a photo of a chimpanzee and compares it to your grandson. “Don’t explain, never complain” only goes so far, Tampon Chuck!

  13. Amy Bee says:

To the Charles stans: He’s equally involved in the smear campaign against Harry and Meghan as William. He’s the real power behind the throne and made Harry’s life a living hell as much as William.

    • RoyalBlue says:

      clap, clap, clap.

he cut off security, he stopped taking their calls, he posed with PWT for the wheelchair and head on shoulder fake-love picture, he sat back and let the smears continue all because he is a jealous and petty little man. first jealous of Diana and now his son and his wife.

all his good deeds can not erase his disgraceful behavior.

  14. Brielle says:

We don’t know the dynamics of that family, like others posters said we know only about 5%…Harry and Meghan are fond of the queen(who apparently is too old and wasn’t really at the head ,during 60 years,of a racist, classist and white supremacist institution) and like Kaiser said Harry is trying to repair his relationship and even if they live in Montecito,it’s clear they still want to be part of that family

    • Carmen-JamRock says:

Its not that H&M “want” to be part of that family….they ARE a part of that family. What every sane person in the world sees happening, however, is that its impossible for them to operate as a family as the courtiers, from the various “Courts” are enmeshed between them.
And the courtiers have their own agenda for their own personal ambition, as well as ambitions for their immediate boss.

    • Bellaluna McKenzie says:

Brielle, you’re really starting to grind my gears with your constant passive-aggressive parroting Queen Elizabeth was at the head of the institution therefore is responsible for everything that’s happened in the last 60 + years and shouldn’t be commiserated with at all.

As far as I’ve read in many recent threads commentariat, no one is absolving her of her participation – whether direct or indirect – in the racism, colonialism, etc… But to commiserate with her now in the twilight of her life and show empathy/understanding that things are probably not as they seem (hinted at by both Harry and Meghan) is human nature…normal.

Showing a little respect instead of assuming conclusions and baiting viciously like that goes a long way toward keeping a peaceful ambiance.

I may not agree with her silence and apparent inaction but knowing how much H&M respect her makes me do the same. She may be the Queen but she’s also a normal, mortal woman like us all at the end of the day. I also suspect something fishy is going on. That she may be prevented from acting somehow wouldn’t surprise me.

  15. S808 says:

Kaiser you’re so right about the Charles shaped hole in a lot of this mess. Charles is a real snake. He’s moving largely in silence compared to William. It’s hard to pinpoint just how vindictive he’s been and continues to be. We know how he acted during sussexit and after but we still don’t know what all he’s done in the events leading up to it and we don’t really know what he’s doing now. He’s more dangerous and calculated than William.

    • February-Pisces says:

I said that just because Charles ‘looks’ like he isn’t doing anything, doesn’t mean he he isn’t. Charles was the smart one in sussexit cos he kept his name completely out of the narrative, meaning no one was even looking at him. Up until the Oprah interview he had me fooled.

Willie and keen were dumb AF getting their mouthpieces to trash harry and Meghan whilst praising them at the same time. It was too obvious that they sanctioned those pieces, and as a result they lost half of their fanbase. Charles being kept out of the drama was really working for him, right up until he got exposed. Diana tried to warn us.

  16. Sofia says:

I doubt Diana’s former voice coach knows anything about the current dynamics of Harry and Charles’ relationship.

  17. Murphy says:

    Who’s fault is that Charles?!

  18. SusanRagain says:

I think this means “Charles keeps being a jackass.” Fixed that. 😀

  19. kelleybelle says:

No shit, Sherlock. Harry’s security for he and his family was pulled. Self-inflicted, just like all the rest of their troubles.

  20. TheOriginalMia says:

I think they are in contact. I don’t doubt Harry when he said they were working on things. I doubt Harry allowed the press to inform Charles of Lili’s birth. Was he called the day of like the Queen? Doubt it. But definitely before Sunday’s announcement.

  21. Lyn O'Callaghan says:

Oh buggar, one had an unfortunate lapse and forgot to communicate with ones son for 18 months. In fact, one forgot that one has actually got two sons so thoroughly that one withdrew support and security. Of course, everything is hunky dory now that one has been reminded, so could everyone please stop pointing out how one is a giant a*se.

    • Eurydice says:

Well, one was waiting for someone’s strong feelings to settle down (although, it’s not clear whose strong feelings one is talking about here). But surely, one’s statement that “happy news” must lead to more electric cars should be a sufficient olive branch.

  22. Over it says:

All bad daddy needs to do is call up his son and say sorry to him and his wife and start doing right by them especially with the media. Unfortunately it doesn’t look like he ever will.

  23. SpankyB says:

I’m laughing so hard at that first picture. Reading the title then seeing the picture was perfect. LOL

  24. Courtney B says:

Sometimes letters can be for the best if there are strong emotions involved. You can just lay out your points without it all getting in the way, or being interrupted, or the other person throwing up defenses. You can take your time, put your arguments together with the help of distance. And, Charles has his many faults and the palaces leak but I definitely don’t think he’d pull a Thomas Markle.

  25. L4frimaire says:

Maybe this is a radical thought but briefing through “ palace sources “ before actually getting in touch with your actual son may be a bit helpful. Charles, and that family in general, feel like they need to maintain the hierarchy in the most intimate levels of their lives, so he probably thinks that his son must make an appointment through his staff to reach out to him, and he wouldn’t lower himself to contact them directly. I bet Camilla still calls him sir.

  26. Lilibetp says:

    That thumbnail is killing me!

  27. Merricat says:

Are they really trying to sell “Charles didn’t respond to Harry because the PoW is so very emotionally sensitive?” Lol.

  28. Barbie1 says:

Can he use his vast fortune to improve his skin problem?

  29. NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

Phones can be hacked and voicemails stolen but letters are different. If a letter leaks, you know exactly who leaked it. Also, as Meg’s case pointed out letters are copywritten. So of course after the Diana years and all those voicemail leaks that Charles endured, he prefers to write letters.

  30. SusanRagain says:

Does anyone remember the excellent British tv comedy, Blackadder?
Hugh Laurie is fabulous as Prince Regent, series 3. An utter fool, stupid but harmless.

Too bad the actual BRF is taking after their nasty ancestors, instead of the stupid but harmless branch.
Charles, the men in grey, team Will & Kate are all behaving like a very bad version of Shakespeare.
The relentless back stabbing, jockeying for favor, etc., etc. Ugh!

Charles cancelling security for H&M is very much a dangerous situation.
He seems to have forgotten about how his Uncle Louis Mountbatten came to his end.

    • Lexistential says:

I doubt Charles could ever forget how Lord Mountbatten came to his end. What’s inexcusable is withdrawing protection and thus having Harry and Meghan face that prospect as an end. Charles probably intended to use that gesture as a hardball tactic, but threatening personal safety is still inexcusable.

(Also, I now want to watch Blackadder, because I really like Hugh Laurie!)

  31. Pamuk says:

Charles has layers of mental illness all starting with his childhood and how the queen and Philip emotionally abused him. Gordonston was further abuse, and the queen mum added to it by the constant you will be king act like a king. He’s clearly a narcissist and suffers from self hate. He is not king material and never has been. He subconsciously hates Harry for everything he is, a king and leader. He’s never going to change at his age, but i think all this tea spilling by harry is a way to try and force his father into addressing his mental health issues. And William imo is his father through and through with added layers of self indulged ego. The family us sooo toxic, including the queen.
