The Wessexes want Lady Louise to become ‘HRH Princess Louise’ this year

Day Three of The Royal Windsor Horse Show

One of the Duchess of Sussex’s complaints during the Oprah interview was that she and Harry were told that when Charles becomes king, he will change the Letters Patent to exclude Archie (and now Lilibet Diana) from having the choice to become a prince or princess. The Letters Patent ensures that the grandchildren of the monarch’s sons will all be princes and princesses if they so choose, or if their parents choose for them. The Letters Patent is still used today and Charles can’t change it until he’s king. Which means that Queen Elizabeth’s grandchildren have the right to be princes and princesses when they come of age. Meaning, Lady Louise Windsor is about to become another pawn in the petty war between Prince Charles and Prince Edward over royal titles. Lady Louise will turn 18 years old later this year. Gee, I wonder if her parents want her to be a princess?

Prince Edward and Sophie could be planning to cock a snook at Prince Charles. After reports that Charles could refuse to allow his youngest brother to inherit the Duke of Edinburgh title when Charles becomes King, I hear that Edward’s family may start using a new moniker of their own. When the Earl and Countess of Wessex’s daughter, Lady Louise Windsor, turns 18 in November, she will be legally entitled to style herself Her Royal Highness Princess Louise, in the same way as her cousins are known as HRH Princess Beatrice and HRH Princess Eugenie.

‘If Charles is going to play silly games over titles, Edward and Sophie might need to ensure that they use the titles their family already have,’ one of their friends tells me. ‘Louise is a humble teenager and doesn’t act like a princess, but she is one — that’s a fact.’

A Buckingham Palace spokesman declines to comment, but it’s true that Letters Patent issued in 1917 assign a princely status and the style of Royal Highness to all children of a monarch’s sons. Sophie made clear in an interview last year that it would be up to Lady Louise and her brother, James, who currently has the title Viscount Severn, how they styled themselves in future.

‘We try to bring them up with the understanding that they are very likely to have to work for a living,’ the Countess said. ‘Hence we made the decision not to use HRH titles. They have them, and can decide to use them from 18.’ But she added that it was ‘highly unlikely’ they would do so.

Crucially, since then Charles’s friends have caused shockwaves by letting it be known he might not allow Edward to become the Duke of Edinburgh, even though he had agreed this, and it was publicly announced, when the Earl and Countess were married in 1999. Viscount Severn would have become the Earl of Wessex when Edward became a duke.

[From The Daily Mail]

I’m laughing! Honestly, I kind of hope Sophie and Edward do this and encourage Louise to style herself HRH Princess Louise. It’s not that I’m geared up to throw this kid in the spotlight – in fact, it bothers me a lot! – but it’s just a really funny turn of events for Charles. He’s so desperate to streamline the monarchy and whoops, here comes another HRH and another princess. It would not surprise me at all if this was Sophie and Edward’s scheme all along, and likely why they’ve been pushing Louise a lot lately.

Bwahahahahaha this update made me ROTFALMBO.🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 In the same statement that was issued by The Queen, Prince Philip and prince Charles, back when Eddy and Sophie just got hitched, the agreement between ALL parties was that Eddy would get the Duke of Edinburgh title upon Philip’s passing and that none of his kids would be styled prince or princess nor would they be HRH, isn’t that what was agreed upon? So I guess everyone is reneging on their prior agreements, LOL.😁😁😁

      • Still_Sarah says:

Well, if Charles is going to go against what his parents wanted/ asked/ told him to do, then I think Edward and Sophie aren’t bound by their previous agreement. I would love for them to thumb their noses at him over this. Charles is being petty.

      • MMadison says:

Was this an agreement that was directly communicated by The Queen and the late DoE or was this reported as such by the Royal Reporters….there’s a difference.

      • Becks1 says:

@MMadison – its in the press release from when they got married, that Edward would be DoE and that Charles was in agreement.

      • Pippi says:

@mmadison Right?!?! I think the phrase ‘cock a snook’ is likely a giveaway that this is not from the Queen’s own pen. lololol. I’m off to google what that means and mess up my search algorithm forever. Tee hee.

      • Mrs.Krabapple says:

Except, . . . there is no “agreement” to go back on when it comes to not having the HRH title. The queen said in writing that Edward’s kids shall not be given those titles, and that’s all it takes to be a “letters patent” (a statement in writing). So Edward’s kids have no right to use HRH, despite Sophie’s desperate need to convince the public otherwise. There was also nothing in the statement about having things change when the kids turn 18.

Now, it’s possible the queen assured Edward in private that she would change the situation when the kids turn 18. But until that happens (i.e., the monarch issues a new written statement to overrule her previous one), those kids are not HRH. Nice try, Sophie.

      • Mrs.Krabapple says:

I double-checked the written statement, and “The Queen has also decided” that “any children they might have should not be given the style His or Her Royal Highness” — so yeah, the QUEEN DECIDED those kids should not get the HRH titles, not Edward and Sophie. So it would take THE QUEEN to change her mind. Which she could always do, but as far as I know, hasn’t done so yet.

@Still_Sarah — But if Edward and Sophie really want to undo what Elizabeth did in 1999, wouldn’t that mean that Edward would have to give back his Earldom? Or are they picking and choosing what part of Elizabeth’s orders they want to follow, and which ones they don’t?

      • equality says:

My question would be why. Why would you treat your children and grandchildren unequally in regard to titles? Just seems like more toxicity in the family.

      • BabsORIG says:

@Mrs-Krabapple is right, the queen issued a letter patent about the titles and HRH stylings. Sophie nor her daughter can’t just decide to change anything, they don’t have that authority. I’m also not understanding why all this freak out over this DoE title. The agreement was that Edward would get it when the queen passed, Chuckie ascended to the throne and then it would go back to the crown. At no other time but only upon Charles’ ascension to the throne would Edward get the title which would be given to him by king Charles. All this kerffufle about the title when the Queen is still alive and Chuckie is just PoW is just so mind boggling; just goes to show you how idle these people are. They have absolutely nothing to do but fight over these fake meaningless titles. Maybe they should try finding jobs and earn a living for once. Or maybe they could get Netflix or Disney deals since they said the Sussexes only got the Netflix, Spotify etc deals because they are royals. I mean Edward and Sophie can just walk into and out of Netflix with a multimillion $$ deal no?

      • Christine says:

Honestly, this family is such a disaster. Ordained by God?!?

      • BooyahB!tches says:

Bottom line: Sophie is a commoner, and Edward is never in line for the throne. Sure, technically he’s on the list, but way, way down. The Queen is possibly annoyed that she didn’t do it to Andrew’s kids, but he was always her fave.

  2. Scorpion says:

😂🤭 This is the most entertaining shit show I’ve ever seen. A penniless princess. Over to you Charlie! I hope Charles retaliates, just for giggles sake.

    • Still_Sarah says:

@ Scorpion : Having to work for a living means something different to the 1%-ers. It means you have to get a civilized job (in the arts for daughters, in finance for sons mostly) and then mummy and daddy will still throw tons of money your way for stuff like houses so you can live the same moneyed life you lived growing up. Louise might end up working for a museum curating the ancient Egyptian section or assessing paintings at Sotheby’s art house. She’ll likely marry someone rich who has rich parents and life will continue on as before. She won’t be at Walmart catching the bus to work.

      • Scorpion says:

Yes, she might not need to catch the bus and work at Walmart but Louise only needs to look at her cousins Eug and Bea who didn’t land any big fishes despite their respective HRHs. One is squatting in her cousin’s home, the other one is drifting from one in law to another. She’s a rather plain with very little coming in once Granny shuffles the mortal coil. The cash strapped aristos will be giving her the wide berth. She will be lucky if she lands a baronet. If she has any gumption, she will contact her cousin Harry and network through him.

      • Still_Sarah says:

@ Scorpion : Eduardo is said to be a multi-millionaire with one source putting his net worth at $600 million dollars. He is a property developer who comes from a family of property developers. Jack Brooksbank is a little more common – he and Eugenie supposedly have a combined net worth of $4.6 million.

Also I think it is unfair to say Louise is “common”. I feel this perpetuates a stereotype of women and teenage girls being judged solely by their looks. Louise is only 17 and doesn’t appear to have much experience or interest in make-up or being glam. She almost reminds me of some of the country girls I knew from high school. Give her a break please.

      • equality says:

@Scorpion Perhaps Eugenie wasn’t looking for fish but for somebody who truly loves her.

      • Mac says:

Jack Brooksbank is from an incredibly wealthy family. I assume they are living in H+M’s house to be near Eugenie’s parents and for security.

      • Bettyrose says:

I think she’s really pretty. In the same way teen Diana was before she became glamorous. And maybe she’ll find a brilliant career at university. Nothing at all wrong with the arts but maybe she dreams of being a veterinarian (as the horse girls I grew up with all did. Admittedly hardly any made the grade to follow that career but they had proper goals).

      • BayTampaBay says:

@Mac – I am sure it is ALL about security. From what I understand, Eugenie still has access to the cottage in the secure Kensington Palace compound for a place in London and Frogmore Cottage works as a country house as the Windsor Estate is also very secure.

    • Christine says:

I could not be more with you if I tried.

  3. Emily says:

    Run Louise run!

    • MMadison says:

She’s being prepared for the “trap”. The monarch/heirs need the rest of the family to be trapped in order for them to thrive. Case in point The Queen and Charles. They are allowed to earn a living outside of the Sovereign Grant. The Queen has her horses, wine etc. Not to mention they both get money from their duchies. The rest of the family is expected to live off what the monarch decides or from inheritance. It’s a trap. If Charles was really interested in slimming down he would have embrace the Sussex’s model. Instead he was more interested in keeping them in the trap and thus dependent on him.

      • Gk says:

100% agree it is a golden cage. The heirs get it all and the seconds have luxury and privilege but nowhere near what the heirs have.

    • Agreatreckoning says:

@Emily, yes. Far, far away. There are some nice relatives in California.

    • Green Desert says:

@ Emily, my thoughts exactly. I hope she goes to college and gets a job and does her thing.

  4. Amy Bee says:

This could happen but she won’t be a working royal. Charles will see to that.

  5. Lori says:

I hope they’re prepared for all the trolling that comes with the title Princess. Bea and Eugenie have had to put up with a lot of trolling about their money and their looks, and their parents sorted lives. Louise and James have not been trolled or invaded much up this point. But once the public “owns” them that it over.

    • BayTampaBay says:

@Lori – The trolling and body shaming of Lady Louise has already begun and the trolling and body shaming will continue whether she styles her HRH Princess Louise or Lady Louise or Ms. Louise Mountbatten-Windsor.

  6. Sunday says:

I’m sorry, “Prince Edward and Sophie could be planning to” WHAT?? LOL

    • LightPurple says:

“cock a snook!” Whatever that means. I need to use that in a brief and see if a judge incorporates it into a decision. I have gotten quotes from Ghostbusters and other things written into decisions that way.

    • Lizzie Bathory says:

      I’m dying. “Cock a snook”–what on earth?!

      • Lori says:

Its when u put your thumb on your nose and waggle your four fingers. Its kinda like blowing a raspberry or saying “in your face Charles”.

      • Lizzie Bathory says:

Thank you for your service, @Lori. That was a new one for me.

      • Jais says:

Could barely read the rest of the article after “cock a snook.” This was my first acquaintance with such a phrase. Lolololololol

But can you snook a cock?

      • Lorelei says:

        @Jais, please! This is a family-friendly website 😂

      • Aphra says:

Same, Jais! I literally couldn’t read on after that insane phrase! Who ARE these people?!?!>!

      • Agreatreckoning says:

        @Jais
‘But can you snook a cock?’ lolllllll

        ???don’t know???

  7. Oy_Hey says:

Ha – I hope Louise takes it and continues to be a private individual and non-working royal. While Bea hasn’t taken that route, Eugenie largely has. She got a job, got married, and other than mild pushes from Fergie in her late teens, she’s stayed out of the foolery.

It’ll make them excluding Archie and Lily even more glaring.

  8. aquarius64 says:

Louise gets HRH and not Archie and Lili when the exception was made for Charlotte and Louis? Nope.

    • Humbugged says:

Ones the grandaughter of a current monarch ,Archie and Lili are not that at the minute .The Cambridge kids all got it because of where they stand in line due to the Letter Patent

      • Becks1 says:

No, the Cambridge kids got it all because the Queen issued a new letter patent before Kate gave birth to George. So they changed it for the Camb kids to give them all HRH, but are talking about taking away Harry’s kids HRHs (that they are entitled to when Charles is king.)

Had the Queen not changed it, Charlotte would be Lady charlotte and Louis would be Lord, and neither would be HRH. AND had Charlotte been born first, she would still have been Lady Charlotte and the first born son would have been HRH Prince. So the Queen changed it to make them all prince/ss and HRH from the start.

I think, if the intention had been at the time that Harrys children would not be HRH, they would have said so as well at that point.

    • Still_Sarah says:

Louise gets it now because she is the grandchild of the reigning monarch and that’s in the letters patent.. Charlotte and Louis got it because their father is the future king. Harry is unfortunate in that his position as the second son is like Anne and Andy – at one point, they were both second in line to the throne but as time went by, they inevitably became more obscure as far as the line of succession was concerned. Harry and his children were destined to become more obscure as soon as William started having children. At 7th and 8th in the line of succession, his children really don’t have a chance in hell of being monarch and neither does Harry. It’s like the Duke of Glouchester – I can’t even remember what his connection is to the Queen.

      • Nic919 says:

Charlotte and Louis got the HRH because the Queen amended it just before George was born since they claim they didn’t know if William’s first child would be male or female and since the succession law was changed to remove male primogeniture there was the risk that William would have a girl first and she would not be HRH but her younger brother would.

They could have simply changed it so that only the eldest child gets HRH regardless of gender. But instead William got the patent to add HRH to all of his children while his grandmother is still monarch.

William’s children would have all gotten HRH once Charles is king anyway, same as Harry.

Really they should have removed all references to HRH for great grandchildren because children aren’t working royals giving them titles remains silly.

      • Justme says:

The Duke of Gloucester (born in 1944) is the first cousin of the Queen. He is a grandson of George V. He was 5th in line for the throne when he was born. He was trained as an architect, but when his older brother died in a plane crash, he took on Royal duties- which he and his Danish-born wife, Brigitte have done quietly since that time. He still has many engagements as he is almost a decade younger than his Kent cousins.

      • BayTampaBay says:

I read somewhere that the Duke & Duchess of Gloucester (Richard & Brigitte) perform 200-350 engagements a year between the two.

Footnote: There is an 18 year age difference between QEII and Richard Gloucester. There is 15 year age difference between Beatrice and Louise. There is a 22 year age difference between William and Louise.

      • Emmitt says:

Archie and Lili will be 5th and 6th in line after Queen/Charles dies until one of the Cambridge kids has children.

    • Nic919 says:

Louise is a grandchild to a monarch through the male line so when she was born she could have been called princess Louise from day one. So no exception was made for her. Edward and Sophie did agree to not using the name and they would let her decide at age 18. This was all mentioned at the time she was born so she can’t be faulted for this.

They did alter the letters patent for all of William’s kids though and not any of Harry’s potential kids. At the time they claimed it was done in case William has a daughter first, but since that wasn’t the case (and I can bet someone knew the gender but the time this new letters patent was drafted) it was never needed.

      • BayTampaBay says:

“Edward and Sophie did agree to not using the name and they would let her decide at age 18.”

@nic919 – I think Edward and Sophie “requested” the HRH not be used in day-to-day life for Louise while she was minor child and to style her as a daughter of an Earl which QEII agreed to.

      • Mrs.Krabapple says:

I double-checked the written statement, and “The Queen has also decided” that “any children they might have should not be given the style His or Her Royal Highness” — so it says the QUEEN decided those kids should not get the HRH titles, not Edward and Sophie (although E and S agreed, but what else could they have done?). The Queen may very well have assured Edward in private that she would restore the HRH titles when the kids turn 18, but it doesn’t say so in her written decree. So it would take the Queen (or eventually, Charles) to issue a new written statement to overrule her 1999. Which she may be planning to do, but as far as I know, hasn’t done it yet.

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

Eventually, William’s children (like Harry’s) would have all gotten the HRH titles when Charles becomes king. Queen Elizabeth simply “moved up” the HRH titles for William’s kids so they got them at birth. But Harry’s kids will still get the “HRH” when Charles becomes king, unless the monarch (Elizabeth or eventually Charles) declares otherwise. So far, there has been no such declaration.

Edward’s kids, on the other hand, are not entitled to use HRH despite what Sophie says. The Queen issued a written statement in 1999 (which constitutes a new letters patent, as there are no other legal requirement to be a “letters patent” other than it has to be in writing) that Edward’s kids would NOT be given the HRH title. The 1999 letters over-rules previous letters, including the ones from 1917. So unless the Queen (or again, eventually Charles, which is not likely) issues a new written statement over-ruling her 1999 one, Edward’s kids do not have HRH titles. The queen may be planning to do so for all I know, but she hasn’t done it so far. Sophie is just playing the public.

      • Smalltowngirl says:

Mrs..Krabapple, but that was a press release, not an actual Letters Patent. So that was the intention, but it wasn’t made into law.

      • aftershocks says:

Exactly @Smalltowngirl. It was a press release, not an official document. It was not a LP, and it really doesn’t matter that it was worded, “the Queen has decided.” She came to that decision because it was said to be E&S’s desire that their children not be burdened with HRH Prince/Princess growing up.

Even if it was part of a larger wish by the firm to limit such styles and titles, the parents agreed. But that doesn’t mean Louise and James don’t technically hold those styles and titles. They do, but they simply aren’t using them, as part of that 1999 agreement.

There’s no reason to believe that Sophie wasn’t telling the truth when she said Louise and James have the option to use the styles and titles when they become 18. As part of the agreement they likely weren’t going to, but they still have the option. And especially if Charles reneges on the DoE for Edward, I say go for it, Louise & James — It’s your blood born right!

    • LRobb says:

I think it’s like this. While the Queen’s alive, the difference spelled out by the Letters Patent is that Louise is the grandaughter of a son of the queen, whereas A&L are great-grandchildren. The HRH difference for Charlotte and Louis is that they are the children of the first born son of the Prince of Wales, that is William.

  9. Harper says:

Louise is still young and may blossom into something else once she goes to college–more stylish, more goth? Who knows? I think it would be awfully fun if she and her brother took their titles and still worked and made something of themselves.

  10. Lauren says:

I could see them doing it just to spite him, especially since this is out of Chuck’s control.

  11. Sofia says:

This family is completely petty and constantly trying to step on each other so I can see Ed and Sophie going “Oh so you won’t give us the dukedom that we were promised? Cool, well then we’ll just make our kids a HRH.”

    • Becks1 says:

This is what I think is happening and I think its kind of hilarious. It’s funny to watch the Windsors turn on each other about something that has nothing to do with H&M.

  12. Snuffles says:

Next up, they will give her a Mia Thermapolis style make over a la The Princess Diaries.

    • Haylie says:

Or they’ll try. British royal makeovers are stuffy, dowdy, and don’t feature Anne Hathaway or Julie Andrews.

  13. Gigi says:

Question: If the Queen were to pass before Louise’s 18th birthday, is she still able to take up the HRH Princess style?

    • Kaiser says:

from my limited understanding of the Letter Patent, no

    • Sofia says:

Yes. The letters patent says that she is entitled to it now. It’s just her parents who decided that they wanted to raise their kids as untitled HRH’s. There’s no age restriction. And once the grandchild of a monarch, always the grandchild of the monarch even if said monarch dies.

    • Nic919 says:

Louise is a grandchild of the monarch through the male line. She is HRH Princess Louise right now but her parents decided that she wouldn’t use it and she would decide at age 18 if she wanted to.
The only difference between her and Eugenie and Beatrice is that her parents did not start calling her princess Louise in public. But that is her current title.
Her brother is also HRH Prince James, but again here they aren’t using it.

Only Anne’s children don’t have the HRH because they are grandchildren of the monarch through the female line.

    • Becks1 says:

Yes, because her grandmother was the monarch at the time of her birth.

      • Justme says:

Even if the Queen was dead when Louise was born, she and her brother would still be grandchildren of a monarch and be entitled to be HRH. Princess Alexandra and Prince Michael of Kent and the two Gloucester princes, William and Richard were all born after their grandfather George V had died. They were princes and princesses from the moment they were born.

      • Becks1 says:

@Justme – you’re right, I was going to come back and edit my comment but ran out of steam, lol. But she’s the grandchild of a monarch in the male line, regardless of whether the queen is alive, so she is entitled to it. Her grandmother is still her grandmother.

  14. Calibration says:

If they do this what’s the upside? Why would Charles ultimately care if she’s saddled with that? She’ll never be a working royal.

  15. Chaine says:

Wait so it is up to each individual? Does this mean Zara Tyndall could wake up one day and start being HRH Princess Zara if she wanted to?

    • Sofia says:

No. Zara is not entitled to a HRH because she is not a male like grandchild aka the children of the monarch’s son.

    • Still_Sarah says:

FYI : according to Google, Zara has no royal rank. So she can’t “trade up” from that which she doesn’t have.

    • Nic919 says:

It is only grandchildren through the male line. So only the children of Charles, Andrew and Edward are HRH from birth.

      • BayTampaBay says:

Same with George and Louis. Children of George and Louis will be styled HRHs if William ascends the throne.

The HRH can (and did early due to QEII’s actions) pass to Charlotte but HRH cannot pass through Charlotte to her children unless by some wild chance she becomes the monarch.

  16. SueBarbri says:

There’s a video accompanying this article that made me want to laugh and cry at the same time. The title was something like “Lady Louise and Sophie walk down High Street!” and it’s such an awkwardly staged pap walk that I cringed while giggling at the absurdity of it all. Louise looks as though she’s never walked down a busy street in her life (or almost like a time traveler from the 18th century who has accidentally wound up in 2021), while grim-faced Sophie trudges behind her looking like the world’s most obvious stage mother. Goodness me.

    • SarahCS says:

Much as I hate to give the DM a click I am sorely tempted to watch this!
      Oh that poor girl.

  17. S808 says:

It’s bad enough they’re willing to be ran over for W&K why offer their daughter to the vultures too?

    • SarahCS says:

That’s how they roll. The wrote the playbook before the Kardashian-Jenners were on the scene.

    • Sid says:

Right? From what I’ve seen of Louise I don’t get the impression that she is interested in the limelight, so why are Edward and Sophie pushing her forward like this?

That said, I see nothing wrong with Louise and James using their HRH Prince/ss titles for official things if they want to when they time comes. It’s their birthright so they should have it.

      • BayTampaBay says:

I cannot say if Louise is not interested in the limelight or her parents just kept her out of the limelight.

  18. ElleE says:

And she should get her title!

I went down a CB rabbit hole yesterday and found an old link to a (2013? George had just been born) DM article that says that Harry was the likely recipient of the D. of E. title when Philip kicked the bucket. That aged well…

HRH Titles for everyone!!!!!!!!!!! I love this show.

    • MerlinsMom1018 says:

      Ha!!!!!
YOU GET AN HRH TITLE!!!! AND YOU GET AN HRH TITLE!!! AND YOU GET AN HRH TITLE!!!
      EVRYBODY GETS AN HRH TITLE!!!!!
      (with apologies to Oprah)

    • BayTampaBay says:

@ElleE – You should know by now the Daily Fail just makes things up.

The Daily Fail is actually worse than The Dim (aka the Scum) or The Slow. The Daily Fail is nothing but click bait hate-fiction, which I am at pains to admit can be very entertaining if one is in the proper mood for this type of entertainment.

    • Royalwatcher says:

Well…HRH titles for everyone except the two biracial royals. Even when they’ll be entitled to them, we cant have that! *eyerolls*

  19. Erin says:

These people just keep telling on themselves. For all the noise they make about how being a royal is so difficult with all the work they do, here are Edward and Sophie saying that they’ve raised their children telling them “they will likely have to work for a living.” Obviously, they don’t actually think that cutting ribbons and attending football matches are “work.”

These people are incompetent at even keeping up their own illusions to the public.

  20. Catherine says:

Wow. The Wessex children are so much younger than the other grandchildren I actually forgot they were actually HRH Princess and Prince. I actually think the reverse is true. The Wessexes let it be known BTS that they wanted Louise and eventually James to use HRH for official functions which Charles can’t do anything about because they are entitled to it and Charles’ response was fine but you don’t get the DOE title. Louise and James won’t be able to pass those titles to their children the way James could pass the DOE to his son. I firmly believe that Charles has the backing of the Queen on this issue. Though it is ultimately his discretion if the Queen felt strongly about this she would intervene with Charles and ensure he would uphold the original agreement. She is still his monarch and his mother. She could wield that influence if she wanted to. The fact that there hasn’t been even of whisper of reporting about disapproval on her part about something that was reportedly Philips wish tells me Charles had approval for taking this stance. She backed Charles over Andrew on the issue of the York sisters being full time working royals even though Andrew is supposedly her favorite.

    • Scorpion says:

Totally agree with you Catherine. Charles III’s Regency has begun and the Queen isnt pushing back any more against any Charles’s decisions. She could step in and award the DoE to Edward but hadn’t done so which is telling. If you are over 18, and not an Heir or in the Heir lineage, it’s time to get going, the party is about to end as soon as QEII shuffles the mortal coil.

    • BayTampaBay says:

QEII cannot award the Dukedom of Edinburgh to Edward without an act of both houses of Parliament as Charles is currently the legitimate holder of the title. Parliament, especially the House of Lords, has no desire to get anywhere near this issue.

IMAO, QEII should put Charles in his place and just make Edward the Duke of Dover or Duke of Glasgow right this minute so as to be done with all this petty British salty BS.

    • nina says:

At this stage I don’t think the Queen gives two hoots about all that, most probably knee deep in her gin and tonics by 11am.
If I was the Queen, at this stage I would kick back and enjoy my twilight years, ride my horses, place bets with my bookie, spoil my corgis, do whatever the heck she does all day when not waving to the crowds or cutting ribbons. Let those crazy mf’s squabble about this crap

      • NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

She’s 95 and if Edward really wanted to have a Dukedom, he could have gotten one at his wedding but he turned it down.

  21. Rachel says:

While it could be considered petty that Charles would withhold the DoE title from Edward; it does kind of make sense. If he truly wants a slimmed down monarchy, there aren’t a ton of dukedoms available for the future. Edward has a son, so the DoE title would pass down to him.
See this article discussing it around the time of the Sussex wedding.

    • JT says:

I agree. I said something similar on another post. There is no sense in giving the title to die with Edward and as you’ve mentioned that aren’t many left now. Might as well save it for a more prominent person. Some here have theorized saving it for another Prince Consort and I think that’s a good idea. I also believe the queen knows that Charles may withhold it and she isn’t bothered by it. All of this noise is coming from the Wessexes, with maybe an assist from the Keens. It’s not like Charles would want this story out there now.

    • Bess says:

Except that the Queen, Prince Philip and Prince Charles all agree that Edward would get the DOE once Phillip passed away.

    • BayTampaBay says:

@Rachel The Sovereign can make up all the titles the Sovereign wants to make up. The Earldom of “Wessex” is a new title, pulled out of the Sovereign’s er…..er… hat with no historical significance whatsoever.

      • Feeshalori says:

Actually, the Earl of Wessex title was in existence in Anglo-Saxon England. King Harold of Battle of Hastings fame was the second Earl of Wessex prior to his kingship and subsequent defeat by William the Conqueror. The title became extinct upon his death. So Edward actually stumbled on an historically significant title because of his love of Shakespeare in Love. I’m really surprised Garter at Arms or whoever is responsible for these matters didn’t know this. And if the queen wants to give him a title upgrade, then she can possibly make him Duke of Wessex.

      • Feeshalori says:

And to add, the title was given afterwards to William FitzOsbern who was a relative and counselor of William the Conqueror, but his son did not inherit the title and it wasn’t used again until Edward became the fourth holder of this earldom.

  22. UnionSnack says:

Wessexes’ death rattle lol. I think they finally got Chuck won’t give them DoE and decided to make a lemonade of their lemon.

  23. Over it says:

She can be hrh just like her York cousins, but just like them she still won’t be a working royal so yeah, girlie will still need a pretend job or a rich husband

  24. Missjo says:

I don’t understand how Sophie has been steadily making herself one of the most stylish of the current crop of females in the Royal Family, yet poor Louise looks like she dressed in the dark from the 50p bin at a church jumble sale, nothing fits properly and the colours make her look ill

    • SueBarbri says:

Exactly this. Louise’s clothes and behaviors look distinctly out of step with the modern world. She looks like she wears Edward’s old clothes. Sophie is such a try-hard, I’m embarrassed and stressed out just watching this unfold on my computer. SMH.

      • Scorpion says:

Get out of my head 🤭. I don’t mean to be mean to Louise. I’m sure she is a perfectly nice girl but she needs to sidestep the limelight. The press and public were vile to Bea and Eug. They only mellowed when Meghan arrived on the scene.

    • SueBarbri says:

Right, Scorpion. I actually have a soft spot for Lady Louise for a variety of reasons. I really don’t mean to criticize her (or any of the other RF children, for that matter), but if Sophie and Edward think that forcing this child into the public sphere at the age of 18 is a good idea, I don’t know what to tell them.

Post-Diana, the RF and the RR and all the other players did a great job of portraying William and Harry as “cool kids.” I don’t know what was true and what wasn’t after all of this, but part of their appeal at the time (at least for me) was their ability to seem “normal” in front of the cameras.

They wore normal jeans and sneakers and hoodies and the press was always reporting on them eating McDonald’s or listening to rap music or falling out of nightclubs or whatever. I don’t know what went on behind closed doors, but they certainly seemed hip enough given their positions.

Do they not employ advisors for this sort of thing? I’m younger than Sophie, but I’m certainly far too old to be an expert on what’s cool with 18-year-olds. I’m not at all saying they should be pushing Louise in front of the cameras unless she wants to be there, but if she agrees then maybe they should hire some young people to handle her debut instead of using the York’s old playbook and wearing those old clothes and screaming about her rightful titles or whatever.

    • Maria says:

You all would be horrified if you’d seen me as a teenager is all I’ll say, lol.

  25. Wadsworth the Butler says:

Sophie is approaching Carole Middleton levels of grasping middle class.

  26. Lizzie says:

The daily fail has pic’s of empty shelves in grocery stores in the UK and THIS is what the rf are concerned with. Entitled Edward lives in 150 room Bagshot Park. He has a very, very cushy life. Yet he and his wife hysterics over a title upgrade. Sickening.

    • BayTampaBay says:

I believe the Royal family were BREXIT supporters which is to blame for some of the shortages.

  27. Guest says:

That’s probably why Sophie seemed giddy when harry and meghan were driven out. She though her family would take their place.

  28. Mel says:

I hope that everyone is reading the room and will encourage their kids to do well in school and have a profession so they don’t have to go begging after Charles and eventually William for anything.

  29. Sunnyvale says:

Fight, fight, fight…😂this is so entertaining. Oh the House of Windsor is in its last days

    • Hell Nah! says:

Hahaha – from your mouth Sunnyvale…

But my oh my this drama just keeps getting more and more entertaining. Keep it up you dysfunctional, petty-ass Freaks – Imma sit myself down to enjoy the rest of the show.

      #AbolishTheMonarchy

      • Liz version 700 says:

Pass the popcorn please! I will bring margaritas

      • BayTampaBay says:

I do not think they will abolish the Monarchy but I do think the will get rid of the British Royal Family Firm. I think in 10 years you will see the Monarch and direct heir apparent only,

  30. CC2 says:

Do it. Let’s see what is the new excuse now that a child further from the line (than Archie and Lili) gets the HRH instead of them.

    • Humbugged says:

Because her grandmother is queen and she is of the male line ,Archie + Lili’s grandad is the heir that is the difference its been the same rule for 100 years

  31. AmelieOriginal says:

Even if Louise does somehow decide to use her Princess title which I don’t see happening because Queen Grandma is still alive, what about her brother James? He’s only 13. Chances are of the Queen still being alive when he’s 18 are pretty slim. She could live for another 5 years but she might not. So if Louise becomes Princess Louise, wouldn’t it be unfair for James to not becomes Prince James if Queen Grandma dies before he turns 18? Or would James go by another title?

    • Sofia says:

He can still go by Prince James even if HM dies. Once the grandchild of a monarch, always the grandchild even when the monarch dies.

  32. NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

There’s little to be desired from The Wessexes but I do think this is a cruel game on Charles’ end and Edward is already equipped to take on the Duke of Edinburgh role, for better or for worse. That said, I think William and Charles made a deal that will make Louis the Duke of Edinburgh at some point.

I think they need to leave Lady Louise alone. Let her live her life without all of the baggage. I hate it when parents try to foist this nonsense on their children. She is the last person that needs the baggage that comes with being called Princess.

    • Humbugged says:

How is that going to happen .There are a load of titles that he can get but if Chuck take the title it will then go to William ,then George and still no Louis .

      • NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

Charles can give the title to Louis when he’s King.

      • BayTampaBay says:

@Humbugged – When Charles becomes King, he will be the Duke of Lancaster and all other titles (except The Duke of Cornwall) merge back into the crown and can be given to anyone the monarch wants to give them to. Charles must GIVE William the title ‘Prince of Wales” as it is NOT automatically passed down to the heir.

  33. Gubbinal says:

I sense that both Lady Louise and Viscount Severn are not interested in being fashion plates or influencers. They seem shy around the cameras. If Sophie is a stage mother it is possible that she does not have their best interests at heart. Not everyone wants to play at being a celebrity or an influencer nor does everyone want to play the “title game”.

    • NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

I agree. Neither seem overly interested in being in front of the camera.

    • BayTampaBay says:

Sophie is doing what she has to do to fight for her family’s (Wessex) financial stability.

      • NotSoSimpleTaylor says:

HER financial stability, you mean? The kids will be fine. Elizabeth and Philip will see to them never needing to worry about money in their will.

  34. Liz version 700 says:

Lord Edward and Sophie come across as thirsty

  35. sunny says:

Sophie and Edward are kind of terrible and craven but Charles is the worst. I’m team Louise! Whatever gives her the most happiness is the outcome I hope she gets.

  36. The Recluse says:

So many thirsty people in House Windsor. Who Knew?!

  37. starryfish29 says:

Honestly, I hope they do try it. The Wessexes are annoying and not prepared for the drubbing they’ll get for it, and it’ll just underline again how trash Chuck is for denying Archie & Lili that same right.

  38. Lori says:

I actually think they should hold the DoE in Abeyance until there is such a time as there is a hereditary Queen with a Prince consort. Edward can still do the work for the awards and pay him to do it as earl of wessex, son of the late DoE. He needs money, not titles.

  39. Cary says:

Nope. Letters patens says that all CHILDREN of a ruling monarch get that prince/princess title.
Lady Louise is granddaughter of the ruling monarch and she will be niece of a ruling monarch when Charles ascends.
But the York girls are granddaughters of a ruling Queen, and they are Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie because their parents asked the Queen for titles. Btw. Princess Ann didn’t ask for titles for her children and hence they are Peter Phillips and Zara Phillips-Tindall. As the York girls are Princesses therefore I can understand that the Wessexes want those Prince/Princess titles for their own children as well. It looks like Lady Louise is going into horses/carriage driving and in that social set a royal title would be very helpful.

    • A says:

That’s not why the York girls are styled as HRH Princess Beatrice/Eugenie. They are styled as such because Andrew is the male child of a reigning monarch, hence his children are automatically entitled to the style of HRH Prince/Princess.

The same applies to Edward’s children as well, because he is, again, the male child of a reigning monarch, and so his children are automatically entitled to the style of HRH Prince/Princess. They do not need to ask the Queen for her permission for their children to be styled as such. They are allowed to use it, if they choose to. They chose to not have their children referred to as such as a personal decision.

The reason Princess Anne’s children are not entitled to the style of HRH Prince/Princess is because they are the Queen’s grandchildren in the female line. Titles and styles of address are passed down through the male line only. Princess Anne’s husband is neither a royal, nor did he have a noble title before his marriage, and he chose to not accept a noble title either. This is the reason why their children are officially Mr. Peter Philips and Miss. Zara Philips (before her marriage, after she is officially Mrs. Mike Tindall).

  40. A says:

There’s a lot of confusion about the styles (forms/manners of address) a person can be entitled to, based on their titles/position, and the style they (or their parents) can choose/prefer when they’re being addressed.

Louise and James are both automatically entitled to the style of HRH Princess Louise of Wessex and HRH Prince James of Wessex from birth, by virtue of the fact that their father, Prince Edward, is a) the son of a reigning monarch and b) the Earl of Wessex. However, their parents, at the time Louise was born, opted to not have their children be referred to as such, even though they are entitled to that form of address. They chose to have their children styled as the children of an earl, rather than as the children of a royal earl, which is why Louise is Lady Louise Mountbatten-Windsor, and James is James, Viscount Severn (which is a title of his father’s that he is using by courtesy).

But both Louise and James are still entitled to the form of address of HRH Prince/Princess of Wessex. It hasn’t been “taken away” from them by anyone, because it can’t be taken away from them. They are automatically given the option to use it, should they choose to, per the 1917 Letters Patent issued by the Queen’s grandfather. The only way those styles could be revoked is if the Queen were to issue new letters patent to that effect, which she likely won’t.

Those same Letters Patent also state that when it comes to the great-grandchildren of a reigning monarch, the only one who is officially entitled to the style of HRH Prince of [blank] is the eldest grandson of the Prince of Wales. In this case, that’s George. His siblings and Archie technically weren’t entitled to the style of HRH Prince/Princess of Cambridge upon their birth. They would have instead been styled as HRH Lord/Lady [name] Mountbatten-Windsor, until Charles became the monarch, at which point they would automatically be allowed to use the style of HRH Prince/Princess of Cambridge/Sussex. However, the Queen issued new letters patent to ensure that George’s siblings would also be allowed to use the style of HRH Prince/Princess of Cambridge from birth.

The same wasn’t done for Archie. And not only that, but according to Meghan and Harry, Charles wanted to issue new letters patent upon becoming monarch to revoke Archie’s right to be styled as the grandson of a reigning monarch in the male line. All while his cousins got special exceptions made for them, courtesy of the Queen.
