Doja Cat in Vivienne Westwood at the VMAs: fun and interesting?

2021 MTV Video Music Awards
Doja Cat hosted the VMAs at the Barclays Center in New York City last night. It felt like this weird hybrid between the before times and post-pandemic. I appreciated that the celebrities were spread out and that the crowd and even the on-stage dancers were masked. Tickets were free and attendees were required to show proof of vaccination along with a negative covid test in the past two days. Doja wore Vivienne Westwood on the red carpet. I like this bold look. There were a lot of celebrities mixing bright colors in their fashion. I think we’ll see more of that tonight at the Met Gala.

Doja performed “Been Like This” and “You Right.” She came in from the ceiling on wires and then she did this kind of awesome modern dance. You don’t see enough contemporary choreography in performances and I was kind of fascinated by that. Doja also won Best Collaboration, for “Kiss Me More” with SZA.

Alicia Keys was in this over the top puffy Louis Vuitton jacket, which was a flex. I thought this looked interesting and different on the carpet. She did “LaLa” and “Empire State of Mind” with Swae Lee.

I don’t have a designer ID on Tinashe’s look but when I saw her interviewing celebrities on the red carpet I thought MTV was airing throwback video. That’s how awesomely early 2000s retro this look is. Shawn Mendes was looking her up and down and told her how great she looked, which is true.

Anitta, aka Larissa Machado, was in a black and white Miss Sohee gown that looked like she had angel wings in front. It was just OK. I really liked the crazy reversible outfit she wore for her BK performance of “Girl From Rio,” which is just like a Girl from Impanema remix I guess.

Rita Ora wore Vera Wang, which makes me think so much less of Vera Wang really. This is very on brand for her.

Tinashe was giving major Christiana Aguilera “dirty” vibes. I’m not sure if that was what she was going for but what an odd outfit to wear as a red carpet host. She’s so beautiful…that outfit made her look cheap. She’s better than that. Also, I don’t know if she’s single or not but her and Jack Harlow had some chemistry on the carpet !

Can you explain ‘cheap’ as a perjorative?

I’m not sure if you’re shaming her for not covering herself enough or shaming her because her clothing doesn’t look expensive.

      • Jamie says:

In this context cheap usually means “not styled well”, the look may not be balanced well, poor cut or fit, or doesn’t fit the celebrities “brand”.

Its ridiculous to act like it is some personal attack on women in this comment and there are only two ways that can be taken in this context.

This is celebrity gossip, this is a red carpet, where clothing, style, and presence are PRESENTED to be analyzed. that does not make it “shaming” the person. Maybe their designers or stylists though for sure.

    • Seraphina says:

I see the “dirty vibes” but I actually liked this look. I know, I know but it looked good on her and she looked great and was enjoying herself.

Doja really avoided the cancel culture curse.

    • ME says:

She had some backlash last year when she said Covid was “just the flu”. Then the whole homophobic, racist tweets. and ALT-right sh*t. Yet here she is. She’s super talented though. I think cancel culture doesn’t really exist. I mean Bill Cosby is planning on doing a comedy tour soon. Is there anyone who got cancelled and stayed cancelled?

    Horrible. All of it

I was going to say I wish Dojo had worn hot pants instead of that sash but then I saw Rita. Never mind. Both outfits do nothing for their figures.

  5. death by bacon says:

after looking at all the outfits again I say a pox on all the houses of “fashion” that made these terrible choices.
Except for the LV jacket, but that terrible onesie a pox.

  6. Bebe says:

oh boy, this must be the event with the worst fashion ever. Where are all the stylists?
Venice festival had such an amazing fashion (and yes, I understand how different that event was from this one), it should have gotten more coverage.

I wish Anitta had chosen a better outfit, the sheer panel being scrunched up made it seem like a cheap dress. I mean, I don’t like the style of it at all but if the middle part had been better finalized it would be better.
VMAs usually have the worst fashion though so no high hopes there. But I did like how retro Tinashe’s look is and she looked great

    *Whispers quietly* It’s, “Ipanema.”

I like everything about this look.
