Duchess Kate apparently wore ‘a very light green’ dress to her brother’s wedding

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attend the EE British Academy Film Awards 2020 in London

Over the weekend, James Middleton and Alizee Thevenet finally got married. They were coming up on their two-year engagement anniversary, and they delayed their wedding a few times because of the pandemic. I am still curious how they managed to plan a wedding in France without the British tabloids finding out every detail. Very curious why the Middleton press machine was so silent about James finally getting hitched!! Although, as some commenters suggested, it’s possible that James and Alizee sold their wedding photos to Hello Magazine, which some celebrities still do. Interestingly enough, the Frenchman who officiated James and Alizee’s wedding did speak to the media. Some highlights:

The ceremony: “It was a very nice and very family ceremony,” said François Arizzi, mayor of the idyllic hilltop village of Bormes-les-Mimosas who officiated the civil union inside the local town hall.

He swears Prince William was in attendance: According to Arrizi, “Prince William and Kate [Middleton] were there but they did not want to steal the show from the newlyweds, Alizée Thevenet and James Middleton, who is a very nice boy.” In keeping with the casual spirit of the occasion, “Prince William did not have any formal attire but wore a beige and off-white suit,” said Arrizi, who said Kate wore “a long dress of a very light green color.”

He spoke to the Cambridges: “I was able to interact with [William and Kate] in very poor English,” the mayor quipped. “We talked about the charms of Bormes-les-Mimosas and its climate, banalities…. It was a simple moment, and I wasn’t more impressive than that!”

The size of the wedding: Arrizi noted that “about 50 people” attended the ceremony, including Kate and James’ sister, Pippa Middleton. William and Kate’s children — Prince George, 8, Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3 — were also in attendance.

Why France? He explained that the wedding took place in Bormes because Alizée’s family has recently acquired a property in the village and also revealed that the wedding party celebrated privately at an undisclosed nearby location after the couple exchanged vows. “Everything was organized with the utmost discretion,” said mayor Arizzi. “They arrived by plane in Hyères [Toulon] before joining Bormes. I was in on the secret, but I could not say anything. They had a security detail and we also reinforced security on our side!”

[From People]

“Kate wore ‘a long dress of a very light green color’…” Did the tacky a–hole wear white to another woman’s wedding AGAIN? I’m very curious just how light this shade of green was, especially considering Kate wore a pale shade of yellow to the Sussexes’ wedding, so pale that her coatdress photographed as white or off-white in nearly every photo. If we do get to see photos of James’ wedding, keep your eye out for that. I think Kate only wears white to another woman’s wedding when she’s feeling super-insecure and petty.

As for William absolutely being there… sure. He had to put in an appearance, at least, probably because he and Kate have spent the summer apart. Plus, he probably wanted to see Carole, his favorite person? I don’t know, though. It did feel like William might have had a falling out with mummy Carole in the early summer. Remember this mess? Remember how the Middletons were trying to force him to bring Kate to the fakakta statue unveiling? Anyway, I bet James’ wedding was a hotbed of familial dysfunction. So much for the perfect Middletons, the perfect family William never had.

I’m pretty sure green is also a no-no colour, isn’t it? I think British tradition is green is unlucky to the bride or something.

    • Ainsley7 says:

It’s an old tradition from Scotland and Ireland about green being the fairies color. The bride herself is not allowed to wear green because it would offend the fairies. Guests are allowed to wear green though.

      • Becks1 says:

I was going to say, Fergie wore green to Eugenie’s wedding, and Doria wore green to Meghan’s wedding, so I’m sure its fine.

      • Lorelei says:

@Ainsley as an American I’d never heard about this before but it’s interesting!

@Becks I hope they did sell the photos to Hello so we can look forward to another couple of years of 300+ comment posts here debating whether or not it was too light 😭

    • Killfanora says:

I wore glorious emerald green to my daughter’s wedding at the end of July (postponed from last summer.) The sun shone, everyone was fabulously happy and it was a wonderful day and evening. Lucky green 🥰

      • Courtney B says:

My mom wore green to mine. And so did my bridesmaids. Lol I’m still very happily married 29 years later. But that’s an interesting factoid. I’d never heard it.

  2. Esmerelda says:

Poor James, he’s the most harmless Middleton, I wish him well.
I’ll be impressed if we don’t see any pics of this wedding, but I doubt it.

    • BeanieBean says:

Per the major, he’s a ‘good boy’. Yikes!

      • Esmerelda says:

Meaning “he’s dumb as a brick”, I expect, but as I said, harmless. ^__^

      • Anners says:

Haha! That struck me, too. How infantilizing! Poor James. On his wedding day, no less. He’s definitely the Rob Kardashian of this family.

      • BothSidesNow says:

Right, as if they view his as a dog. What an awful statement and demoralizing. I guess having a son was sees an limited opportunity for CarolE to marry him off into an aristocratic circle or royal.

      • Lorelei says:

@Anners: ouch! The Rob Kardashian comparison is scarily accurate!

  3. Andrew’s Nemesis says:

God forbid the Lesser Buttoned Wiglet, aka Kate, let anyone shine on their own day. Remember how she hijacked Phil’s funeral?
Does anyone here reckon that she’s got her own sidepiece? We know how toothy she gets around sportsmen. Or is she just too cold and dull?

    • M says:

A side piece requires work, and we know she doesn’t do that, so I’m gonna say nope. Mummy Carole wouldn’t let her anyway.

    • Noki says:

I understand its open season for the men to cheat and have side pieces. The womens life get turned upside down whenever they attempt to do the same.

      • Merricat says:

Because kings and noblemen didn’t want to pass on their lands and monies/power to children that might not belong to them. I think.

    • Dee says:

My bet is on a personal trainer or tennis coach.

  4. Eurydice says:

I thought William was supposed to be fluent in French and Kate also speaks some French. Why is the mayor conversing with him in broken English? And “a beige and off-white suit”? A weird thing for William to wear, or maybe the mayor doesn’t know that much about color and clothing. It may turn out that Kate’s “light green” is actually purple.

    • LovesitinNM says:

That struck me as well. I never heard that W or K could speak any foreign languages. Which if true is really too bad and a missed opportunity to prove they offer any sort of value as diplomats.

    • Nic919 says:

William can’t speak French for shit. He could barely read French off a written speech when he was last in Canada and it was so hard to understand because it was just so bad. There is no way he can hold a causal conversation with anyone in French.

      • Eurydice says:

That’s what I was wondering, because there have been tabloid articles about how William can speak 5 languages and he’s “quite the linguist,” which…no…

      • Lorelei says:

        @Eurydice: “quite the linguist?” Lmfaooo

That must have been the same publication that referred to him as “elegant”

      • Gail Hirst says:

And he said he had practiced that speech when he was in Canada!!!!!!! (Sure, Jan)…

      • Brincalhona says:

Very much not a linguist family

      • Lorelei says:

@Brincahola: oh my god, this is an absolutely perfect comment 😭

      • RoyalBlue says:

What i love is how the celebitchies bring the receipts. I remember seeing a video of the tampon and baldemort reciting something in different languages and I thought, oooh they are muiltilingual and came to say that here and was schooled on the truth.

    • Ainsley7 says:

I don’t remember it being said that either of them speak French. Kate allegedly speaks “some welsh”, but that’s the only language I remember either of them being said to speak.

    • Layla says:

I don’t know if anyone noticed but that event where they’re ere holding the reception for African leaders, Kate admitted to Sophie “I need to practice my french Sophie”.

  5. Moderatelywealthy says:

I had forgotten how white looking Kate’s dress was….and you still have people defending her.

Lol..this is some petty telenovela villain move.

    • Claire says:

It may present as off white, but it looks nothing like a wedding dress. Sometimes it seems to me that some of may be reaching?

      • swirlmamad says:

It may not LOOK like a wedding dress, but the #1 faux pas of wedding etiquette is wearing white of any kind as a guest. Or anything that can be mistaken for white, either. In short, if it’s too pale, just say no.

      • Merricat says:

Please. As a woman obsessed with protocol, Kate knew exactly what she was doing.

      • Moderatelywealthy says:

She might be petty, but not an idiot …of course she would no attend in a long, ruffled dress that reads white.

      • Sofia says:

If people can still debate on whether or not your dress (as a guest) was white or off white 3+ years after the wedding, maybe wearing the dress wasn’t a good idea.

      • Lorelei says:

@Claire, it’s really not “reaching,” imo— even if it didn’t look like a wedding gown, literally everyone knows guests aren’t supposed to wear white to a wedding. It looks white in photos and Kate knew it. It’s a small and petty thing, but there’s no way that Kate (and her stylist, whose job it is to advise her) were unaware of this unwritten rule. But Kate went ahead and did it anyway.

        @Sofia: EXACTLY

      • Maria says:

No one said it looked like a wedding dress, ever. We’re commenting on the color, which a faux pas regarding tradition as a guest.

      • HeatherC says:

@Sofia In Kate’s case, the dress was a wonderful idea. 3 + years after another woman’s wedding and we’re still talking about HER. She is pathetically despicable.

And I can’t wait to see this very light green dress. Maybe this is another branch of theme dressing for her?

      • Guest says:

I’ve always thought that dress was a sign Kate tried a bit at the beginning. It’s pale but looking at the formal photo she co-ordinates beautifully with Doria, the bridesmaids and the flowers / colour scheme.

      • Anners says:

I agree with Guest. In the wedding photos everyone was wearing pale spring colours and looked really pretty and coordinated. I’d like to give her the benefit of the doubt and think she was trying and didn’t understand how sunlight would blow that shade out to white/cream. But ya, not cool to wear a similar colour to future weddings.

      • Nic919 says:

She made the bride cry over the tights of the young bridesmaids so I really don’t think Kate was trying at all to be nice. Why give the benefit of the doubt to someone who felt she could usurp the bride and her wedding plans?

      • Becks1 says:

Kate wore the same dress in a pale blue to the RAF centenary service that July, that blue also would have gone very nicely in the pictures if she was worried about coordinating for pics (which I doubt.)

      • GraceB says:

It depends on the photo’s you’re looking at, I think. In some photo’s Kate’s outfit looks almost white but in others, it’s very clearly yellow. I had a look on google to double check that I wasn’t remembering this wrong. Spring/pastel colours are very popular for weddings in the UK, so I’m guessing that’s all it was.

However there is a photo of her bending over and you can see whatever it is she is wearing under the coat dress. That does look more like it’s white.

      • BothSidesNow says:

@ Guest and Anners, this is absolutely not possible. KKKeen Guevara knowingly wore that dress that is clearly in the white/ivory family as a clear indication that Meghan was not accepted, liked or even possibly, unless a meteor landed on TOB helicopter, that it was a gesture of good will and acceptance. KKKeen Guevara purposely choice that dress solely for the benefit of speaking loud and clear that KKKeen Guevara did NOT accept Meghan, DID not want to extend an olive branch to her, since they both married into The Monarchy, DID not care that she was able to try and create the opportunity to upstage Meghan on her own wedding day and she DID intend in wearing that dress that she saw Meghan as a threat to KKKeen. KKKeen Guevara DID it solely for the purpose, for ALL to see, that Harry and Meghans wedding was of no worth/value/importance to everyone worldwide, especially Meghan!!

      • Anners says:

I’d forgotten about the tights (I don’t even know how that’s possible since it comes up regularly. Sigh). I absolutely agree that Kate is a mean girl and did her level best to ostracize Meghan. Maybe I’m giving her too much credit. But I could see myself wearing a yellow dress to fit with the colour scheme and not consider the implications. Maybe I wouldn’t. But sometimes I *am* that thick. I would hate to have all those thunder-stealing motivations ascribed to me.

    • Nic919 says:

It is generally seen as rude to wear a white dress if you are not the bride. But yet I recall so many trying to pretend that wasn’t a thing in England, except for the some British commenters who did pop in and say that it was rude there too. Also her sour look throughout the entire thing and for the photos really didn’t help.

      • Jen says:

I remember other people defending her with comments like “she just had a baby. She might not have had anything else that fit” like she is just your average mom with a limited number of dresses. She could have easily worked with a designer or tailor to make something else work if that was an issue.

      • Maria says:

Oprah made a whole new ensemble at the last minute because she thought hers ended up looking too white, right? Kate had options.

      • swirlmamad says:

@Jen, ITA. If anyone in the world would have the accessibility to another outfit choice, even if it was last minute, it’s Kate.

      • Becks1 says:

@Jen and the funny part about that argument was it was mixing the two issues. Was the dress white? Many Kate defenders insisted it was not, it was a pale yellow, and it was merely an exact copy of the white/cream dress Kate wore to Charlotte’s christening. But once they switched to “she wore this before after having a baby and knew it would be comfortable and that it would fit” the defense shifted, because if it WAS The same dress that it was definitely white, and if it wasn’t the same dress then Kate got a new dress from McQueen that was the exact same as a dress she already had in a shade that was almost the exact same but not quite.

There was really no defense for this that didnt make Kate either look petty or like she was wasting Charles’s money.

      • Lorelei says:

I can’t tell if her stans are delusional or merely disingenuous? but to act as if Kate doesn’t have all of the resources in the entire *world* to have had another dress made is ludicrous. And as someone already pointed out, Oprah had hers remade overnight. Because Oprah actually has class.

      • Nic919 says:

Let’s not forget that Kate had already made Meghan cry over tights and she had sent an apology note, so this passive aggressive dress colour was very likely Kate trying to reassert her dominance once again. This is a woman who theme dresses on tours and so there is no time that she’s wearing something in public without any thought being put into it. She knew what she was doing.

      • Debbie says:

If there’s any doubt about Kate’s choice of dress, people should review that picture of the Windsor (and Kate) sitting on the bench. The one with Charles, Camilla, Will, Kate, and Andrew, etc. None of them was smiling, but most wore their usual neutral looks. Kate actually looked sad, even her mouth was downturned – at a wedding. I mean, she looked more cheerful and unaffected at Phillip’s funeral.

    • Seraphina says:

I agree that Kate knew better and is smart enough to know what she was doing. What I have always thought was strange was the shoes really don’t match her “pale yellow” outfit.

      • Sid says:

Kate pulled a similar stunt at Eugenie’s wedding. I am convinced Eugenie told the family that blue and green were the wedding colors, because all the women and many of the men were in various shades of blue and green. Except for Kate, who rolled up in that bright cranberry red outfit and stuck out like a sore thumb. You can’t tell me she didn’t do that on purpose.

      • goofpuff says:

@Sid not surprising since its well known that Kate has always treated the York sisters terribly. Sounds like her usual mean girl tactic.

      • Nic919 says:

Similar to that red headband she wore at Archie’s christening. This is someone who does nothing but theme dress so she’s not showing up in anything to any public event by accident. It’s literally the only work she does for her engagements.

      • RedWeatherTiger says:

As for the York sisters, their wearing those ridiculous hats at Kate and Will’s wedding seemed designed to pull attention (it worked) and to add a sense of ridiculousness to the wedding, so maybe Kate wanted to get back at Eugenie for that.

    • AnneSurely says:

The whole primrose yellow bit floors me to this day. That was a cream colored dress. That you can tell that she had specifically made for that day bc she was still carrying the baby weight and it fit her.

Just waiting for the pictures that call another off white dress light Ceylon or something.

      • BeanieBean says:

Me, too. The only hint of yellow in the entire ensemble is the roses on the hat + next to Charlotte’s white white dress, it looks a little duller, but still white, just a different shade of white.

      • Nic919 says:

Also there was confusion that this dress was actually another dress she had previously worn and that dress had been described as cream. So much passive aggressiveness because she wasn’t going to be the centre of attention. And her sour look in the wedding portrait is forever memorialized. .

      • Debbie says:

In fact, the flowers in the hat (being the most colorful aspect of her look) distracts the eye, so if you cover the hat with your hand, and all you see is Kate’s dress — that dress, she is white. If that dress is not white, it will certainly do until a white dress comes along.

  6. Becks1 says:

They arrived by plane – I’m assuming private, but of course there will be no criticism about that, there never is.

Interesting how this was meant to be such a private affair but the freaking officiant/mayor is talking to the press about it. Maybe they thought that would be less obvious than “a source close to the family” (cough carole cough.)

    • Nic919 says:

The airport referenced by the officiant doesn’t handle commercial flights except for an airline that only seems based within France. So it’s unlikely that a group of British people did multiple connections. It’s pretty much guaranteed they took a private jet to arrive.

It is weird for the officiant to be giving an interview, especially when he admits that his English isn’t great. Did Carole write for him what to say?

Also this pale green dress was definitely a new outfit. We will likely see it months from now during an engagement

  7. Sofia says:

The officiant wouldn’t be speaking unless the Midds gave the go ahead so I’m guessing this is how we’ll get details – drips and drabbles from sources. Wonder if they’ll make the pictures a People/Hello exclusive or keep them private.

  8. Noki says:

Alizee is not a factor to Kate, therefore she does not need to be shown up or put in her place. Only when you threaten Kates beauty, status or work ethic then you will be brought down a peg or two. She was perfectly chummy with Chelsy Davy for years because she was a non factor to her.

    • Nic919 says:

Kate was not always the official girlfriend when Harry was dating Chelsy as she and William had a few breakups during that time, most notably when the Diana memorial concert was held and only Chelsy sat next to Harry and William. Therefore her position wasn’t as solid. But she was never seen as friends with Chelsy even then.

      • Noki says:

Sure but Kate is capable of being a comrade when its suits her bottom line.

Also i remember that concert,i got second hand embarrassment for Kate sitting behind them,i honestly would have stayed home.

      • SueBarbri says:

Looking back, everything about the way William treated Kate during the first 10 years of their relationship was a red flag. Harry was right out front with Chelsey at the concert, while Kate was shoved all the way in the back behind Williams friends. And everything I ever heard about their dating life back then was based on secrets and whispers, to the point where it seemed he was ashamed to be seen with her. It was all “group dates” and “evenings at home ’round the telly” and all that sort of nonsense. If Kate had been a friend of mine, I would have told her to find a more enthusiastic boyfriend.

At the time I think I it was sort of vaguely made out to be William protecting Kate from press intrusion. But come on. Between this and his 21st birthday party (featuring Jecca!) and those incredibly awkward skiing photos where he’s guiding her down the slopes, William has been shamefully tepid on Kate for a long time.

      • Nic919 says:

It was pretty obvious how he was far more comfortable interacting with Jecca in public than he was with Kate. He even seemed embarrassed when she went to Sandhurst for his graduation.

  9. Harper says:

If the officiant/mayor could hardly converse with Kate and Wills in broken English, how is he able to clearly relate so much info to People Mag? Do you think People actually went to the trouble to hire a translator or was this just Uncle Gary on the other end of the line pretending to be a French mayor?

    • swirlmamad says:

Good point. And LOL at Uncle Gary on the other end of the line talking in a crappy French accent.

      • Zapp Brannigan says:

Uncle Gary was doing he best Rene from ‘Allo ‘Allo. I wonder has he got
The Fallen Madonna With The Big Boobies?

    • Ainsley7 says:

I figured he spoke French to them and people translated it.

    • teecee says:

The mayor is one who described his English as broken. He is probably being humble. I bet he speaks decent English, or is at least far more proficient in English than all the British people in attendance could speak French.

  10. Mu says:

Alizee is so pretty, I think the fraud duchess do feel insecure but to a lesser level compared to Meghan. Also she wore pale yellow to Mike and Zara wedding.

    • Courtney B says:

She is very pretty and natural with a great smile. That’s how you do a large smile Kate! Maybe because Alizee’s is actually real. She’s worn some great outfits too.

  11. Belli says:

The “very” was added for a reason in “very light green”.

Her dress definitely looked white/off white. Soooooo classy.

    • SarahCS says:

      Of course it was!

Her internationally televised wedding was the high point of her LIFE. She hangs her whole existence on it.

  12. Amy Bee says:

Hello had the exclusive that Kate’s brother had gotten married so it stands to reason that they have the exclusive rights to the wedding pictures. And it’s likely that the tabloids knew about the wedding but kept quiet because of that deal with Hello.

  13. Shell says:

I still remember my first thought when watching Meghan and Harry’s wedding on tv – “OMFG KATE’S WEARING WHITE, WTF?!”

    • Betsy says:

It looked yellow in the first video/pictures I saw, but in others shortly thereafter it totally read white. Such a petty little choice to wear white on a wedding day.

  14. MY3CENTS says:

So basically after more than two months of Kate not working we get a piece discussing the color of her dress, (and us comparing to previous dresses). This is what we can sum this woman child up with. Nothing.

    • Lorelei says:

@MyThreeCents I hadn’t even realized that, but you’re right. At the end of the day, no matter what the circumstances, it’s *always* her clothing that is the only/main topic of discussion about her. That’s just always all there is.

  15. Meghan says:

Someone may have already said this but at this point the “we don’t want to overshadow the nuptials” IS overshadowing! It’s not like Kate got married and became a Duchess yesterday and this is all new for the family. If I was the bride I’d be like okay go out there and get your paparazzi shots and let’s get on with my day.

  16. Hi! says:

Ooh, reading that they came to my hometown makes me feel like I have only one degree of separation to them!

  17. Meghan says:

Is this the brother that started the Marshmallow company? 😂

  18. Marivic says:

Carole is livid with Meghan because ever since she came into the scene, the rotas have lost interest in Pippa. She has to intentionally stroll in the streets to get papped and get covered. But most of all, Carole hates Meghan because nobody is interested in Kate anymore.
