Emily Blunt in Miu Miu for the 2021 Met Gala: is she the Statue of Liberty?

MET Gala Departures 2021

Emily Blunt is an American citizen, even though she has regrets about that. I was hoping that for the America-themed Met Gala, Emily would turn in some British-American, transatlantic, interesting look from a well-known American designer or British designer. Instead she went with Miu Miu? And it’s got a built-in cape and it’s kind of sparkly, and then she’s wearing a headpiece. I think it might be her sartorial take on the Statue of Liberty? Anyway, I did end up liking this.

Karlie Kloss wore a very big, architectural Carolina Herrera. She looks okay and she definitely followed the “go big” theme that wasn’t actually a theme. I just wish the dress wasn’t made of that stiff-looking taffeta! It feels so PROM. That’s not her husband Joshua Kushner either, although Joshua has attended the Met Gala with Karlie before.

Lorde wore Bode and an elaborate headpiece. This reminded me of those awkward years where Prada was just sewing random sh-t onto their dresses for no reason. I actually thought this was Prada when I first saw it! But no. In any case, it sort of suits Lorde.

Anna Wintour wore Oscar de la Renta. I liked this? She usually looks like a Death Eater, but this is cheerful, chic and pretty.

Lordes outfit wouldhave been bettee for the previous themes e.g catholic imagery or the Chinese one.

MY thoughts exactly. She looked like she recycled the look

      • BothSidesNow says:

Yes!!!! If it had been a church v state theme, she would have knocked it out of the park and back!!! It’s quite stunning though! She certainly is owning this look as well!!

Emily Blunt looks magnificent!!! I love everything that she has on, except the earrings. Otherwise, she has certainly nailed the Met Gala aura and mystique of the theme!!

Sorry, but Karlie should have made a better choice. This is awful. As for Anna, she looks like Anna and it’s not a bad dress, it just looks very Spring season to me, but what do I know. I am not a famous editor. But I do like the dress on her and the print.

    • Soapboxpudding says:

It looks like knickknacks to me and sort of kitschy, which is very American.

Anna looks like KK when she was pregnant — sofa cover!

I like Emily’s look! The dress itself is really pretty and I like the cape. Her style is kind of quirky in its own way and I think she often wears things that wouldn’t look right on anyone else but work for her.

Karlie Kloss’s dress is a lot of taffeta.

There is something off with Blunt’s face and I think it’s the eye make-up. That sparkly brown does not elevate her gorgeous eyes. The dress in itself looks like something a very creative 12 year old with a passion for ice-skating could come up with.

Lorde looks divine to me, and she is wearing flats. WIN.

I think I read on twitter that Emily’s dress is supposed to be a tribute to Hedy Lamar, and I can totally see it. One of my favourite looks of the evening.

    • LightPurple says:

It’s very much like a dress Lamar wore. I didn’t like the top of it so much but that crystal beading was gorgeous when she walked.

    • Coco says:

I saw that too. I like the dress, but the headpiece is disappointing. I think it needed to be more dramatic, because as it is I feel like it’s something servers would have to wear at a space-themed restaurant.

    • Courtney B says:

I was going to post this. Yes, it was an apparent throwback to Hedy’s Ziegfeld Girl look designed by legendary customer Adrian. She looked great. One of my faves. There was a lot of trash looks on the carpet unfortunately. Pretty underwhelming year.

Emily Blunt’s outfit reminds me of the space travel/world of tomorrow vibe from the 1960s. I like it.

  7. josephine says:

I thought Karlie’s dress was ugly and tacky. I get the look that she was going for, but it felt like too many disjointed ideas, and the length was just wrong. One of the worst of the night, and that’s saying something.

    • BothSidesNow says:

@ josephine, thank you!!! I agree with you! In fact, at first I wrote she should have stayed home instead of wearing that monstrosity, but I thought I was being too bitchy! Yes, she should have stayed home!!

  8. GrnieWnie says:

She should have regrets about becoming a US citizen. Now she’ll be hunted down to all corners of the earth for the taxes she owes the US for the rest of her life. Double taxation isn’t a thing anywhere else. But it is for American citizens! You, too, can pay taxes to two governments when you’re an American citizen living outside the US!

And if she doesn’t do her taxes properly, they’ll hunt her down in old age and slap her with a huge fine — even if she returns to England for her retirement, collecting absolutely nothing from the US. She could leave now and never live in the US again, and she’ll still have to pay taxes there.

And if she tries to give up her citizenship, she’ll have to pay thousands of dollars and sit in a years-long queue until US immigration officials finally get around to it…but only if she’s paid that tax bill first!

All this while American corporations and MNCs barely pay anything at all. The double standard is nauseating.

    • BothSidesNow says:

@ GrnieWnie, this should be considered out right thievery!!! She has to pay US taxes for the rest of her life, but WWII german immigrants that were found to be war criminals, having entered the US illegally, are fully paid their SS benefits/pensions!!! In addition to having been discovered and deported, the US turned a blind eye as to when these revelations came to be and these murderers were not detained, reported and were never brought before any trials to pay for their war crimes 🤬

  9. Lauren R says:

Karlie Kloss had a child recently didn’t she? Maybe the dress is a little off due to her proportions still not what they used to be pre-pregnancy?

  10. one of the Marys says:

In a video Emily was smiling broadly and there were strange darting lines down the side of her nose and I thought, oh that’s what happens when there’s too much Botox, that’s the effect I’ve heard people remark on, thanks celebitchy. It must take a skilled esthetician to get it just right

    • BothSidesNow says:

I didn’t realize that @ on of the Mary’s. I didn’t notice, but I wasn’t paying attention to her mouth. But she has captured Lamar in her entire ensemble!!

    • Meg says:

Yes she gets too much face work done before being seen in public IMO she even looks uncomfortable like she knows it looks bad

  11. DrSnark says:

Too much going on with Wintour’s outfit. And I loathe her hair, but that’s been true for the past 40 years.

  12. Beech says:

Emily Blunt’s outfit gave me Esther Williams’s looks.

  13. Ann says:

Emily’s dress…..I don’t like the skirt or the cut but I do think the material is pretty. I kind of love her headpiece. I don’t know who Lorde is but her outfit is fun!!!

  14. Kat says:

Emily Blunt’s headdress reminds me of Heady Lamarr in “Ziegfeld Girl” (1941).
