Kristen Stewart wore Chanel’s glittery cowgirl cosplay at the 2021 Met Gala

Kristen Stewart gives a wave leaving for the Met Gala 2021

There was a pretty small group of “Chanel girls” at the Met Gala, and Kristen Stewart was arguably the Chanel gang’s leader. And how. I will give K-Stew credit for wearing trousers and looking pretty comfortable and, yes, Met Gala-appropriate. I think the jacket is pretty cool and the trousers are awesome, but maybe not together? And Kristen’s styling is… something. The bangs, the ponytail, the hair color. It’s a look.

Margaret Qualley was another Chanel girl. I hate this twee nightgown and I hate that they did this to her!

Lily Rose Depp in Chanel. I’m sorry, but this is a disaster? Why is this so stiff-looking, and why is the design so bad? Lord, I’ve never understood this fixation on Chanel.

There were so many tennis players at the Met Gala! Newly minted US Open champion Emma Raducanu got a last-minute invitation, and she got to wear Chanel too. She got possibly the “coolest” Chanel?

At first, I thought she was trying to look like Lucille Ball -maybe- but I think her hair is old school Barbie.
I think my older sister’s first Barbie was the one with this hair in blonde, a long pink evening gown and a white fur stole.
    It’s a look.
I love Chanel but not so much this outfit.

  2. D says:

Lily Rose Depp’s face looks really odd. I assume it’s the makeup. It’s like her face is melting off of her head.

  3. Jay says:

Kristen’s makeup and hair are giving me old school Barbie doll vibes! Assuming that’s the intent, I think that is a cool idea for an “American” theme. The rest of these outfits though, I don’t love.

  4. Hell Nah! says:

    Nope to all.

Okay, maybe a pass to Emma’s look.

  5. Merricat says:

Kristin Stewart is a beautiful woman, but her hair and makeup make her look like Jessie from Toy Story. I used to love Chanel, but not there’s not a win in the bunch.

    • August Rain says:

Isn’t that the point? To look like a cowgirl/ 50s waitress?

      • Merricat says:

You don’t have to look like Jessie to achieve that. Lol. No, indeed.

      • August Rain says:

What do you have against poor Jessie? It would actually be really funky if she was the inspiration, as she herself, was a hint to the toys emulating American values in those days, but with a feminist twist.

      • Merricat says:

What a weird hill to die on. I have nothing against Jessie. I just don’t like her hair and makeup.

      • August Rain says:

Yet you keep coming back to said hill and begging for more? What can I do. I deliver.
You may not like it, but it is on theme, and you made me think that the cowgirl persona is usually a feminist theme which made me like it more, even if it is not an elegant make-up and a glossy gown. It certainly evokes Americana to me, and she looks so happy in that porcelain skin. And it’s pants. And it doesn’t have a trail. It’s innovative and wacky, a bit. The rest is just personal taste.

  6. Chill says:

I’ve been so excited to see so many women wear pants to the MET!!!! Go girls.

  7. Fuzzy Crocodile says:

Not what I would have chosen.

  8. August Rain says:

Lilly Rose Depp has such a French RBF, as if she’s always about to say “Bof, je m’en fous”.
Kristen Stewart is radiant, the outfit is cool and shiny and the hair is glorious to me.
The other outfits seem like afterthoughts.

  9. Becks1 says:

I agree with others that I definitely think Kristen’s hair and makeup is an ode to the original Barbie. Fine, that kind of works with the theme.

But the rest of the looks, including Kristen’s…just no.

  10. Mumzy says:

I am convinced that not everyone received the same Gala invitation. So many stunning looks and yet so, so many horrors.

Aside from that…what’s going on with Chanel? It just seems they’ve lot their way—or they’re conducting a social experiment to see who will wear extremely unattractive pieces just because of the brand’s history and prestige. That house needs a shakeup and to get back to its roots.

  11. Alexandria says:

Is Borat hiding in Chanel? It’s like a troll is designing for them.

  12. I pet goat 2 says:

    Kristen’s look is amazing

  13. Jenny says:

I think she looks incredible! I’m glad she’s passed the greasy haired scruffy phase. She’s bringing different looks and I’m 100% down. Go Kristen

    • josephine says:

I actually love it as well – she’s been looking great lately. It’ the Met Ball, not the Oscars, and I think the hair and make-up are right on. It was fun, refreshing, and Americana. I think Chanel has gone seriously downhill but she reps them so she’s stuck with their clothes, and this outfit is not as bad as some in the recent past.

  14. Lil says:

Emma’s the first player in tennis history to win a slam as a qualifier, is seriously photogenic, and speaks fluent Mandarin. Her agent must be cackling while picking out their new Tesla.

She + Kristen are pulling it off. I like Kristen’s take on the theme and they did fine by Emma considering she must’ve been a last minute invite. But to make women as beautiful as Lily-Rose and Margaret look bad…jeez. Sort it out, Chanel.

    • Snazzy says:

I really liked Emma’s look considering she probably was a last minute invite. She looked cool and comfortable

      The rest were MEH

  15. Miranda says:

I can’t remember the last time I liked anything by Chanel. It’s always bad lines with twee, babyish details.

Lily Rose Depp’s outfit reminds me of when my cousin and I used to play “supermodel” and strut down the hallway/catwalk with sheets or towels wrapped around us and secured with safety pins.

  16. SJ says:

Kristen looks great, and also HAPPY. I will accept no criticism of her whatsoever!!

  17. GrnieWnie says:

Lily Rose looks good, just needs to hike up the skirt a few inches. Wearing it that low on an already long body just throws her proportions off.

  18. BeanieBean says:

K-Stew should have played Lucy! With that hair & make-up, she looks a lot more like Lucille Ball than Nicole Kidman.

  19. Jess says:

I don’t like any of these, but I think KStew could pull off that hairstyle if her hair was back to dark brown. That with a 50s style pinup would have been amazing.

  20. Eenie Googles says:

I think the hair and makeup are fun. It would be a good Met look without that hideous pink top/jacket.

  21. Kristen says:

Who’s the girl in the black ball gown in the last photo? She is the only one doing well here.

    • ennie says:

I checked because she looked familiar. She was in the last Sabrina series as Prudence’s half sister. She also seems ti be in a reboot of Gossip girl. Her star is rising!

  22. Anna says:

    They all look tragic.
Lily Rose’s make up is so bad. My god. Looks like the make up artist pulled a prank on her.

  23. ennie says:

Kristen’s makeup might look odd, but hers is on point unlike that Depp girl. Awful, it doesn’t even match her neck, unless they were going for that look.

  24. Bettyrose says:

Why is Margaret Qualley dressed like a Jane Austen character? Is she at the wrong gala?

  25. Kaykay says:

I like Chanel’s knitted sweaters, bouclé jackets, costume jewelry, and the occasional flowy blouse or dress. It tend’s to look good on the runway, but to me, most of their designs look very cheap and unflattering fitting. And to be truthful – the good stuff get’s recycled for a new season with new color or print. Being creative in this fast fashion world must be so exhausting. No wonder the stuff comes out bad.

It’s like renewing the seasons of a washed out show, over, and over again, with filler content, just because there’s still some profit to get out of it, instead of keeping it a really good two season show with lot’s of amazing content.

Chanel does 6 seasons a year.
Cut out at least half the seasons. Take away half of the designs. What you are left with is a great collection and a happier planet.

  26. Ann says:

I kind of like Margaret Qualley’s look. It does look like a Regency Era dress but I love those so it’s OK with me. And it suits her figure, features and hair. She has a kind of old-fashioned beauty, with the curls and rosy mouth and pale skin.

  27. LA says:

Kristen kind of evokes Dale Evans for me, so that’s something!

  28. Emma says:

Don’t like the fancy nightgown but the others look good imho!

  29. Turtledove says:

I think Margaret’s look is kind of interesting. It isn’t something that I would aspire to wear for myself, but as an overall look, I think it kind of suits her in a weird way.

K-Stew looks SO different to me here, and it isn’t jsut the hair. She normally looks so waifish and tiny, and here she looks like a 90s supermodel. (Helmut Newton vibes) I am not implying she gained weight, she jsut looks so statuesque in these pics. maybe she is taller than I thought and I always just had the impression she was super petite. Or maybe I am just crazy?

  30. North of Boston says:

I like the idea of Kristen’s look, and a lot of it, including the styling.

I would have * loved * the entire thing if it had been tailored differently. To me the sleeves and pant legs both being wide and drapey and a bit too long makes it all too “a kid swimming in clothes that are too big” and distract from her and the overall look, vibe.

  31. Sof says:

Someone please explain to me the hype about Lily Rose Depp because I don’t get it.
I actually really liked Margaret’s dress, don’t know if it’s on theme. Many looks that didn’t seem on theme were actually homages to movies or vintage designers, could this be the case?

  32. MsIam says:

    D@mn Chanel? What happened?

  33. nb says:

In the group pics it looks like they played that couples date night game where you go to a thrift shop with $20, pick clothes out for each other and have to wear it out in public on an excursion. Everything just looks ill fitting and haphazard to me.

KStew looks the best though IMHO, and a lot of that has to do with her confidence and how much fun she’s having.

  34. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

    I love that ‘twee nightgown!’

  35. L4frimaire says:

Agree the Emma got the best Chanel. It looks cute but not Met Ball level. Last minute I guess. None of these looks are that great, but worst of all, how can a couture house have such poor execution. These clothes look like first year fashion student versions of Chanel. What is going on with the Chanel design team? Karl Lagerfeld really is a tough act to follow.

  36. Bonnie says:

OMG I thought Kristen Stewart was Katie Perry! 🤣

  37. Rea says:

I love the hair coloring and makeup of KS but everything else is yuck. That does not look like Chanel it’s a terrible outfit the quality in design has gone downhill.

  38. Gobo says:

Who the hell did Lily Rose and Kirsten’s make up?!

  39. Lucy2 says:

I would never have guessed that was Kristen.
