Kendall Jenner wore a boring & sparkly Givenchy to the Met Gala

Kim Kardashian and Kendall Jenner attend the Met Gala

Kendall Jenner wore Versace Givenchy to this year’s Met Gala. What does this say about the American lexicon? That we like butts and sparkles? Kendall was like, here, take a sparklebutt. I’m not even halfway through the Met Gala photos and I’m already exhausted by how many women did netting + sparkles, honestly. Kendall possibly got one of the better versions, but it’s still kind of bad and boring. Update: yeah, got the ID wrong, this is Givenchy. I should have known!

Zoe Kravitz and Channing Tatum did not arrive together or walk the opening red carpet together. They did leave together though. So that’s something! They’re really happening, and Channing would not have gone to this mess if he wasn’t with Zoe. Zoe wore YSL and Chan wore Versace. I hate her dress, it’s so boring (like Kendall’s).

Olivia Rodrigo in YSL. This is… something. On one hand, it’s bold for a first-time attendee, and it’s probably comfortable-ish too. On the other hand, she’s just wearing a bodysuit with feathers.

Blackpink’s Rose also wore YSL. I can only assume that her “American lexicon” reference was Julia Roberts’ fancy dress in Mystic Pizza.

Do we think Zoe Kravitz had second thoughts about wearing that when she saw Megan Fox at the VMAs?

    • Alexandria says:

It’s not my style but I think both looked great.

    • remarks says:

Everyone is in really good shape. But every time I see these outfits I keep focussing on whether the colour of the underpants or even the skin tone of the person matches the dress. I’m not entirely sure if that’s what I’m supposed to be focused on.

    • MF1 says:

I would hope she did. Megan did it first AND better. Zoe’s look is a snoozefest next to Megan’s.

    • Nope says:

Evan Rachel Wood did it first in the sheer dress when she was with Marilyn Manson. It was for shock value, and now we know that she was in an abusive and controlling relationship with him, which just makes it sad. Megan looked like Kim Kardashian’s leftover trash. The photos of Zoe on the stairs are awkward. I’m sad to admit that Kendall wore it best, she’s at least smiling and looks like she’s having fun.

    • observer says:

i think ZK’s dress suits her personality more. if you asked me if i’d rather hang out with ZK or KK i’d say ZK in a heartbeat. ZK really expresses who she is with her style and clothes, even when it’s arguably too plain for the occasion.

also, Kendall is my least favorite Karjenner, and she may have all the personality of a wet paper pickme packet, but the dress is stunning. i’d love to see it worn by someone who could actually wear that dress, instead of the dress wearing her

    • Debbie says:

All I know is that it’s sad when young, attractive women wear sheer gowns or very revealing outfits, it’s not supposed to elicit a yawn, but there we are.

  2. Wiglet Watcher says:

I understand there’s an annual theme to the met gala. Guests are to dress on theme and interpretations are to impress and make you think, right?
So, I’ll enjoy the costumes either on or off. What I cannot understand is how people show up to what is essentially a costume party in basic dresses and gowns to show they’re conventionally pretty.

Kim wore it better years ago. And I never thought another kardashian would try for that drippy, sparkly look again at the met.

    • Mac says:

I just assumed Kendall raided Kim’s closet.

    • Soapboxpudding says:

As much as I hate to say it…going tacky and revealing is…kind of on theme for American fashion.

    • (TheOG) Jan90067 says:

While I can’t stand ANYTHING Jenner/Kartrashian, I can *see* a likeness to a gown Barbra Streisand wore in “Hello Dolly” (the gown she wore in the scene where she was singing with Louie Armstrong).

Nah… I’m overthinking. There’s no way a Jenner/Kartrashian would make the link; she just wanted to hang her ass out.

    • Debbie says:

You mean that Nolan Miller-by way of Frederick’s of Hollywood is Kim K’s gown?

      • Wiglet Watcher says:

Had to look it up. Thierry Mugler was the designer and it was worn by Kim in 2019.
It was a drippy crystal look like this.
I get the fair lady reference, but for both sisters to pick a very similar look at the same event is too much.

  3. josephine says:

I do not understand the cut of Channing Tatum’s tux — there is no need at all to bring back the baggy tux. And the rest were just boring. Bummed about Zoe – she’s such a knock-out, and her dress was borderline unflattering. Kendall’s shoes were hideous and the dress was unmemorable, which suits her perfectly.

  4. FHMom says:

I love Zoe’s look. Olivia’s too. The girl with the bow is a slouchy mess.

  5. Coco says:

Jenner is “Rich parents means I can do whatever I want in America”

  6. August Rain says:

Zoe K was in a mood it seems.

  7. Alexandria says:

I think J Lo would have loved Kendall’s dress. But I think Kendall pulled it off. She’s still boring but at least she’s smiling here so kinda refreshing.

    • Kaykay says:

She is shining. Looks very happy!

    • Voominvava says:

She looks absolutely Stunning. So does Zoe. I don’t understand the boring comments about these dresses . They are all works of art, which take hours to create. I think we can all be a bit jaded sometimes about celebrity vs fashion. I do not like the kardashians but Kendall Jenner can’t be human. That body. She looked like a goddess.

  8. Ainsley7 says:

I think all the sparkly dresses were supposed to be a nod to the Statue of Liberty. Kendall’s dress could have been better if it had been fully lined or her underwear complimented the dress. I hate it when a dress is entirely sheer and you can see the underwear that’s meant to give the illusion of nudity underneath. It just looks unintentional. So, it really detracts from the dress for me. With Zoe, you can see that her underwear goes with the dress. It’s intended to be seen and it just looks better over all.

  9. Bryn says:

I thought Kendalls dress was supposed to be a take on a dress Audrey Hepburn wore?

    • Char says:

Because Kendall and Audrey are both in the same level of class, of course. The dress is really well made, but it clearly doesn’t have Audrey Hepburn vibes.

      • Bryn says:

But it is, a dress from my fair lady. No need to be rude, I wasn’t saying anything about how classy either women is. Just making an observation that others have also made.

      • Naomi says:

Audrey never ran around half naked with her underpants showing. So I get the intention but it doesn’t work. Kim’s been doing this same look for years. However, I did think Kendall looked very pretty and happy, which is appreciated.

    • MellyMel says:

No, you’re correct it was. It was a dress from My Fair Lady.

    • LovesitinNM says:

Oh nice info find! That’s a fun inspiration for Kendall to go with.

    • MF1 says:

I think you’re right but the execution is just bad. She didn’t lean into the theme enough.

    • remarks says:

I think the dress from My Fair Lady had some kind of striking necklace attached to it. I wonder if that would have made a difference to this dress. The neck area of Audrey’s dress was a bit captivating.

      • Becks1 says:

She wears a choker necklace in the movie not that different from this one. The neckline is just higher and the choker comes down a bit lower.

      • remarks says:

Maybe placement makes a difference. What Audrey wore definitely looked more striking. Or maybe it’s the person wearing the neckline who makes the difference – who knows.

      • Becks1 says:

@remarks oh I agree about Audrey looking more striking. See my rant below, lol.

If you’re going to try to imitate or pay homage or whatever to an iconic look from someone like Audrey Hepburn, you better be able to nail it. She did not.

      • Naomi says:

Pretty sure we couldn’t see Audrey’s underpants.

  10. Eurydice says:

The problem with see-through dresses is not that you can see the body, but that you can see how the body moves. With Zoe’s dress, all I can focus on is how awkward her legs look when going down the stairs. It takes a lot of practice not to look awkward, and also to learn how to not to trip over your dress without hiking it up.

    • remarks says:

Oh, yes, her walk is a bit strange there and makes the photo look awkward.

    • Wiglet Watcher says:

No pass on this. Zoe has worn many gowns down and up steps before. Even I know you pull the dress out straight at your thigh or slightly to the side to give yourself extra stepping room without bunching or distorting the dress or pattern.
      Event Cinderella did it right.

      • MJO says:

I love to see great new dresses. The problem with see through dresses is that you see a body, not a dress. Just go nude.

      • Wiglet Watcher says:

        Mjo
I think a see through dress could be done right, but when it’s done wrong it always looks dumb. This was a scandalous and interesting style once, but now it’s just… why?

  11. AnnaC says:

Scrolling through the pics this morning, I realized I have no idea who half the people were, 1/4 I knew the name but no idea what they were “famous” for, and 1/4 recognized and had some awareness of their work.

IMO, so few truly unique and memorable couture looks, and the see through mesh covering key areas was overdone and just boring. Love her or hate her, SJP always did her homework on the theme and brought it. Every year after looking at the Met ball pics, I’d daydream of just once having a reason, and the money, to wear a high fashion couture gown to attend a big fancy event. This morning just rolling my eyes.

  12. Miranda says:

Kendall is so boring, but I actually love her dress. Its very late Victorian/early Edwardian, especially with the Queen Alexandra-esque choker. It’s a pity that she decided to just throw it on over her Spanx.

  13. Daisy says:

Kendall actually wore Givenchy and it was inspired by Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady. So yeah, she was actually on theme for once lmao

    • MaryContrary says:

I don’t see how My Fair Lady, a musical set in London based on a book (Pygmalion) written by a British author is on theme for American Lexicon? Maybe I haven’t had enough coffee and I’m being dense?

      • AmelieOriginal says:

Yeah My Fair Lady has NOTHING to do with American fashion. It’s a fun look to be inspired by but not American fashion. And Audrey Hepburn wasn’t American either. The look has nothing to do with the theme.

      • Eurydice says:

Exactly, from what I can tell, the Met exhibition is American Lexicon, but the theme was American Independence- not sure how anything British exemplifies that.

      • Alarmjaguar says:

I’m scratching my head with you.

  14. SM says:

and I thought after all that time in quarantine, people would be eager to dress up, rather than go to the Ball in their underwear.

    • Debbie says:

It’s just the opposite. During quarantine, people got used to sitting around in their underwear, hence the “naked” look w/ undies.

Anyway, I hope that Kendall is paying union wages to those people charged with carrying her train around.

  15. girl_ninja says:

Zoe and Kendell were both a miss with their looks. I don’t know why but Kendell Jenner bothers me so damn much.

  16. Willow says:

I actually like Kendall’s sparkly dress but it needs a lining? That discolored corset thing ruins it. Zoe’s looks like chain mail. Maybe it’s the lighting? I like Olivia’s feather boa across her shoulders, but the rest is no. And Rose, she needs to get rid of that blonde hair, it completely washes her out. Plus, her stylist did her dirty, I’ve seen her look 100x better.

  17. remarks says:

None of them really have star power like J-Lo did when she wore that green dress to the Grammy. I have no idea if that’s the result you’re supposed to achieve, but I figure if you’re going to wear a see-through dress you’re expecting to stand out in some way.

The two teen tennis players rom the US Open stood out more to because they looked different from the rest.

  18. Misbehavin says:

Poor rose. I’m not a huge black pink fan but their fashion is usually fun and over the top, but this is a little boring. And I don’t understand why she’s standing like that unless it’s just unfortunate timing. I’m sure there’s a better pic out there.

  19. Becks1 says:

Kendall would have been better just wearing the dress from My Fair Lady. that dress is a work of art. this one – not so much.

One of the things that makes that embassy ball dress so gorgeous is that it moves with Audrey but does not reveal anything, but because of how it moved it was very sexy. In my opinion its a genius dress for the movie because it fits both with the time period when the story takes place and with the time the movie was made (early 60s.) The dress is stunning and her appearance in it is one of the big moments in that movie.

This dress….not so much. It takes away so much of what made the dress from the movie such a LOOK.

Here is where I admit I just rewatched MFL a few weeks ago because it is one of my favorite movies of all time and Eliza’s Embassy ball dress is one of my favorite movie looks EVER.

    • Lena says:

I don’t see how it works with the theme. This year it was so simple and it kinda bugs me that so few followed a simple theme. And I’m so sick of the naked look, the tits out look, the bra looks. People have lost the plot. You would think after a year of not doing this they would have been thinking about it more.

  20. Nikomikaelx says:

Rose was there as YSL’s Muse, so she was dressed by them, she didn’t get to choose her look herself.

  21. MsIam says:

    I like Olivia’s the best.

  22. Ariel says:

At least Kendall looked like she was having a good time. It is nice to see a pleasant smile on a model and not just a bad blue steel impression.

  23. LillyfromLillooet says:

I loved Kendall’s dress but wow man, I am over the see-through thing. It presents the wearer as an anatomical spectacle–she should be wearing the dress, not the other way around.

  24. C-No says:

How do they set the temperature at events like this? The women are practically naked and the men are wearing suits. Someone is freezing or someone is boiling. Maybe the mostly naked women borrow the other women’s capes.

  25. Mich says:

Please make the sheer ‘dress’ go away.

  26. jferber says:

Didn’t like Kendall or her dress. She looked very smug, as though every eye in the room was on her (or should be). In the second pic, she looked a lot like her mother. So tired of this family. Where is her hot boyfriend, though? I’d much rather look at him.

  27. Kathryn says:

I live in NYC and there is some local chatter about how only some of the Kardashians are vaccinated. (Not Kylie, Kourtney or Khloe). Has a single one of them even promoted or posted the vaccine?? It’s odd that Kylie was in NY for fashion week and then left ahead of the met gala. Some people were saying “oh she’s pregnant and didn’t want to travel/go to events.” Well, she did travel and she did go to lots of other packed events so crowding clearly wasn’t a concern. Makes sense to me! The MET was very clear, if you want to come, you have to be vaccinated.

  28. Nicki says:

Kendall’s is Audrey Hepburn’s ball gown from My Fair Lady, only naked. It’s kind of hilarious how badly these women want to go naked in public. There’s no amount of attention in the world that will ever be enough for them. That kind of unquenchable thirst has to be exhausting.

    • Turtledove says:

I actually like Kendall’s dress, but I am a sucker for sparklie things, and those in particular look like stars, which I swoon over. Gotta say though, what a completely odd vibe to go for, “I wanna be like Audrey Hepburn….but more naked.” Audrey is known for her classic and classy looks…overtly sexual was not her thing.

  29. AmelieOriginal says:

I actually really love Kendall’s dress minus the whole fact that it is unlined and I had no idea it was inspired by the dress from My Fair Lady. If it wasn’t sheer, Kendall would be one of the best dressed for me. I also hate the trend of women wearing sheer dresses with granny panties/body suit underneath. It is just not a flattering look on anyone and I don’t care what shape your body has. It just makes the outfit look unfinished.

Also Zoe’s look literally looks like a fishnet. Like I could grab it off her and run to the beach to go catch some fish.

  30. Jenny says:

I’m in the minority as I love both of dresses. They are stunning. Not for everyday wear:)

  31. remarks says:

Do they put make-up all over the body to wear the see-through dresses? In some photographs, they look sweaty/shiny/oily/beige and I’m not sure if that’s intentional.

  32. Bettyrose says:

Yawn. Naked women and tuxedoed men. Not an ounce of creativity. Next.

  33. Coffeeisgood says:

I think Kendall’s dress is gorgeous but it’s the same look she wears every year. She doesn’t ever mix it up or take risks.

  34. remarks says:

How does Zoe Kravitz’s dress fit in with the American theme?

    • Truthiness says:

It’s an YSL dress and she may very well have been paid to wear it. The brand’s initials are in the chain mail fabric. I don’t think Zoe was dreaming up her theme dressing, YSL phoned it in.

  35. Esmerelda says:

Poor Yves Saint Laurent, whoever is designing the label now should be ashamed. They were greedy, they should have just retired the label – no one has the talent to follow the master.

  36. Colleen says:

I like Kendall ‘s hair and makeup. I don’t get how her and Zoe’s dresses fit the theme butevery year I never understand that 🤣

  37. Naomi says:

Why do celebs do that eyes down, walk of shame look, at a public event? It’s just weird on Zoe and Channing. I know this was one of their first times in public, but why look like you’ve just emerged from a brothel or something?

  38. Athena says:

Why is there little coverage of what the men wore? Are we going to ignore Pete Davidson in a dress?

  39. Penguin says:

The fact that Kendall’s body suit doesnt match her actual skin tone is genuinelly driving me crazy. You’re going to the MET gala and you cant get better matching nude underwear?

  40. L4frimaire says:

These sheer sparkle dresses are so boring. Very Vegas showgirl without the fun and feathers. I guess that’s the American theme part.

  41. Bella says:

I love Kendall’s dress and Zoe’s except Zoe’s looked ill fitting in the bust area. All of the dresses would look better lined as this sheer –I mean naked trend is boring.
