Sophie Hunter looked pretty great in a Roksanda sack dress in London

London Film Festival 2021 - The Power Of The Dog UK Premiere Arrivals at Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, London

I really wish we could go back to the halcyon days of the Obama administration, when everyone here was equally obsessed with either loving or hating Benedict Cumberbatch. Whenever Bendy walked a red carpet, especially with Sophie Hunter, we were guaranteed 300-plus comments. I miss that! Anyway, last night, The Power of the Dog premiered at the BFI London Film Festival. Benedict Cumberbatch and his wife Sophie Hunter(batch) were there. As was Kirsten Dunst, Bendy’s costar. They’re actually positioning both Cumberbatch and Dunst for an awards-season run, although I think Dunst might have a better shot, in general. She would end up in the supporting category, and I’m not sure the awards-prognosticators are entirely sold on Bendy-as-an-American.

Surprisingly, I think the biggest story from the premiere is that Sophie looked pretty amazing. There really aren’t that many women who can make a sack dress look chic and elegant, and Sophie is one of the few. This sack dress is the Artemis dress by Roksanda. Sophie has eased herself out of Erdem-fandom and she’s branching out to other designers. It’s nice. Seriously though, I would look like a lumpy blob in this dress. But she looks so pretty. Look at the back too!

Unfortunately, someone had to wear Erdem and that someone was Kirsten Dunst. I miss her Rodarte era and I would love to know why she’s not wearing Rodarte these days! This Erdem is a lovely color, and that’s about the only nice thing I can say. It’s unflattering and Kiki’s stylist should have talked her out of this. All that being said, don’t you think we’ll see this dress on the Duchess of Cambridge at some point this autumn? It’s VERY keen.

    Ummm…. The shoes are nice.

  2. Amy Bee says:

If not Kate, Sophie Wessex will wear this dress. She’s an even bigger fan of Erdem than Kate.

  3. Merricat says:

Sophie really does carry it off well. It wouldn’t be my choice, but she looks pretty.
Kirsten’s dress is frumpy and matronly, two words I don’t usually associate with her…but I do associate those words with Waity Cambridge. I can totally see her in this dress.

    • BayTampaBay says:

like you, I do not care for Kirsten’s dress. This dress makes Kirsten look 20 years older than she is. I hope Erdem is paying Kirsten to wear this dress.

    • Seraphina says:

Agree with everything you said and will add I really liked the back of Sophie’s dress and did someone forget to iron it or steam it??????

  4. Krista says:

You know, I don’t hate Kirsten’s dress as much as usually hate Erdem. The Duchess of Cambridge has worn some absolutely hideous Erdem dresses – it’s given me an overall distaste for the label. But this is almost palatable…

    • Lightpurple says:

I would like and probably wear that dress if it were knee length and I needed to wear a pretty dress to something like an afternoon wedding or a party but definitely not an evening movie premiere.

      Sophie’s look I striking.

      • Becks1 says:

That’s my big issue with Kirsten’s dress – even long, I don’t hate it, I like that shade of green –but it seems off for a big movie premiere. Like I could see it a high tea or something IDK.

I love Sophie’s dress though and usually I hate sack dresses.

      • Concern Fae says:

Is Kristen not have enough clout to get a dress hemmed? That is what I always think when I see something like this.

  5. Laalaa says:

Kirsten looks like a Christmas tree.

    • Giddy says:

This. I don’t care what is done. Raise the hemline, chop off the sleeves, give it a plunging neckline, and it won’t matter, because the fabric looks like Christmas. Combine that with the evident bra failure and it’s just a mess.

Sophie has the limbs and the swan neck to pull this look off. She looks great, her and BC look so good together.

    • BothSidesNow says:

She does look lovely in this dress!! She also has a low side bun which looks perfect, as the dress is dramatic!! I think that they make a lovely couple as well!!

    • StellainNH says:

I wonder if the dress has pockets. It seems like every dress she wears on the red carpet has them. ❤️❤️

  7. Vanessabee says:

I think the problem with the Erdem is the neckline. If it had plunged, it would have offset the grandma curtains effect, with a little sexy.

  8. Green Desert says:

Oh Kaiser, I miss those days too! The comments on those Hunterbatch (love that) posts were so wonderfully passionate and insane, haha.

Sophie consistently has really great style, and this looks great on her. The back is fantastic.

I love Kiki and actually think she looks great! She can pull of that style, it’s so her. That type of dress needs the right wear-er. None of the royals would get it right, they’d bring their outdated hairstyles and bad shoe/accessory choices into it.

  9. JEM says:

I think Sophie looks lovely on most red carpets. She’s got beautiful style. And what have they done to Kiki? Unacceptable!

  10. Emmy Rae says:

Sophie’s dress looks like the cover of a beginner’s piano book!

    Both are beautiful fall colors.

  11. Huh? says:

Obama? What? He deported more immigrants than any other President. Why is this website always pestering about politics … I thought it was a “gossip” column

  12. AmelieOriginal says:

I remember when everyone was obsessed with Benedict, it was the height of the Sherlock series popularity and everyone with a crush on him lost their marbles when he started dating Sophie. The reaction was truly… something else is all I’ll say. Glad that the mania died down. Sophie’s dress is meh and so is Kristen’s, not really feeling either one.

    • Spittair says:

I remember lurking around CB during that time and it was absolute insanity. Tarot “experts” swearing they would never marry, and discussions about whether or not her CV was being fluffed as if it mattered to whether to not she was qualified to be BC’s gf. It’s was hilarious.

  13. thewhiphand says:

This reminds me of a dress she wore to another October premiere a few years ago that looked like it had a spiderweb pattern on it. This looks like she’s the Great Pumpkin.

Think she really likes Halloween and is a theme dresser? 🙂

  14. Yup, Me says:

I think Sophie’s dress is beautiful. It woukd look amazing on me and I would totally wear it.

I just saw a video of Kirstin sitting with her home designer and friend of many years and now that dress makes sense to me for her. It matches what she said about her aesthetic in the video.

  15. Joanne says:

I’m dying to know why Kirsten is not wearing Rodarte these days too. This is her third premiere for Power of the Dog and not even once she’s worn Rodarte 👁

  16. sunny says:

He is amazing in the Power of the Dog- it is his most brilliant work. I hope he gets a nomination. Plenty of films to be released that are awards bait still but Power of the Dog is a critical darling coming out of the festival circuit and his performance is central to why the film is great(if a little long).

Kiki is good as well but her role has less screen time and she has way less to play. I also thought Jesse Plemmons was so good in his supporting role. He is such a powerfully quiet actor.

    • Nic919 says:

I saw Power of the Dog at TIFF and Cumberbatch owns that movie. I can’t see how he won’t get a nomination and right now he’s probably a favourite to win. I really don’t think he’s done better work. I also think the actor who plays Kirsten Dunst’s son will also be in the running for supporting actor. Kirsten is good in her role, but it’s going to depend who else is in the running.

      • Kay Hendricks says:

I agree with you, Kaiser. I miss the old days, too. But I’m glad Benedict is still making great movies and hope to find some way to see Power of the Dog without subscribing to even more streaming services. He looks good here, and I hope he can at least get a nomination out of what I hear is a great performance. The critics will probably find something to campaign against it with, though. Sophie looks great and so happy for both of them. Thanks for the article.

  17. Digital Unicorn says:

Sophie has great style and pretty much always looks good on the red carpet.

Not keen on Kiki’s dress – her shoes are great thou.

  18. L4frimaire says:

I don’t really like Sophie’s dress. The back is nice but it still looks like a bag with scribble on it. At first, Kirsten Dunst’s dress looks ok, but then you look closer, and there’s balloon cuffs, and pleats, and a low waistline with a waist tie. It’s very busy and makes her look matronly. The color and print actually is very good but the designer threw everything in there designing it and it’s not good.

  19. Anon says:

Sophie and Bendy both have very decent posture and for me that helps Sophie pull this dress off!

  20. Mcmmom says:

Sophie’s dress would look horrendous on me, so I can appreciate how lovely it looks on her.

  21. Eve says:

I see absolutely NOTHING special. Two boring looking people in boring looking clothes (in case Cumberbatch is indeed a human being — jury’s still out on this one).

    And I have spoken!!!

    ETA.:

Ok, one compliment. The back of his (or its, who knows?) head looks nice.

  22. iconoclast59 says:

Kirsten’s dress is definitely not her best look, but postpartum dress-up can be a rhymes-with-witch, especially if you’re nursing because your boobs are inflating/deflating. In both pics Kirsten’s facial expression says she’d rather be at home wearing sweatpants.

  23. Mei says:

Sophie’s dress is gorgeous, the colour is wonderful and I love a slashed neckline! Looks so chic. The earrings are a bit weird and I wish she’d do something different with her hair, but overall it’s a lovely look on her.
