Dakota Johnson in Gucci at ‘The Lost Daughter’ UK premiere: cute or meh?

London Film Festival 2021 - The Lost Daugter UK Premiere Arrivals at Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre, London

Last night was the BFI London Film Festival premiere of The Lost Daughter. TLD hasn’t been getting the kind of concerted awards-season hype as, say, Spencer of The Last Duel, but I’m very curious about the film and it’s been making its way through the late-summer and autumn film festival circuit too. Maggie Gyllenhaal adapted the screenplay from Elena Ferrante’s book of the same name, and this is Maggie’s feature-film directorial debut. I’m still waiting for the first trailer for this film! When is it going to come out?

Maggie cast her husband (Peter Sarsgaard), Dakota Johnson, Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley in key roles. Jessie has been a breakout actress in recent years, and I have to think that one of these days, she’s going to get that role which makes her a household name. In this film, she plays the younger version of Olivia Colman’s character. Dakota has a larger role and I think they’re mostly selling the film on Dakota’s name.

Dakota wore Gucci because she’s a Gucci girl and she gets paid to rep the label and wear Gucci as often as possible. I’ll say this – I think this is legitimately her style. Somewhat conservative, enjoying beiges and nude shades, some feathers, a strong shoulder. But all I can think about is how she could have worn something so much better than this. There were better Gucci looks too!

As for everyone else’s style… Maggie looks like Maggie, she always wears different versions of the same three outfits and it kind of works for her. Jessie’s styling is kind of so bad that it’s actually kind of cute and avant-garde. Like, the hair is tragic and her dress looks like a brothel lampshade, but she TRIED! Olivia kind of tried too, bless her heart. I actually like that material a lot, it would have made a cute blazer and pencil skirt.

PS… Enjoying the fact that Maggie was like “no blondes allowed.”

I love Olivia’s coat like dress.

    • clomo says:

Me too, it looks so comfy and easy to navigate a room in. Great color for people with O.C. coloring.

    • L4frimaire says:

I think it’s hideous. Not very flattering and looks like an old bathrobe or 70s shag carpeting. That color is ick. Looks like burnt pea soup. Just why would she do that to herself? She isn’t even 50 yet but dresses way older.

    • tempest prognosticator says:

Olivia looks really good in that color. I like her look the best.

    • SarahCS says:

My reaction was fancy dressing gown and on that basis it gets five stars from me. I love this and want it.

  2. Libellule says:

I liked Dakota’s dress. Then i saw the sleeves. Yikes!

Olivia’s dress looks like a very comfortable robe. I love it

    • smcollins says:

Me, too! It fits her beautifully and I love the pale shade against her dark hair, but those sleeves are not good.

    • BeanieBean says:

I liked Dakota’s dress when I saw it in the first photo, then I scrolled down. Now I realize I liked it because most of it was covered up. And I love Jessie’s haircut! Very Clara Bow.

    • BayTampaBay says:

I think the feathers look ridiculous.

      • BothSidesNow says:

They do, don’t they! What did they think at Gucci…oh this dress is missing something with these bazaar shoulders…I know, feathers!!! The more the better!

    • Dierski says:

Me too! The first two pics look like its a short-sleeved dress… had it simply had the cap sleeves without the feathery nonsense at the bottom I would have LOVED it! The sleeves are bad.

  3. Mei says:

I thought Dakota’s dress was lovely until I saw the shoulders and the sleeves. Why do so many brands ruin a perfectly lovely dress with weird details -_-
I like her hair, it just looks very casual. A high ponytail with the waves would have been nice! Loving Olivia’s hair though.

    • lucy2 says:

I agree, I like the color and the material, but the sleeves are so distracting.
Glad to hear Maggie is directing. I like her as an actress and I could see her having a good director’s eye.

    From left to right:

    1. Maggie: As always, she is both slightly classic and quirky. I don’t know how she continues to do it after all these years, but she has managed to turn her youthful oddball tendencies into mature adventurism, so hats off to her just for that, even if this isn’t one of my Maggie favorites.

    2. Olivia: I can’t help but wonder if she changed her stylist recently because she’s dressing so much better lately. Love the fuzzy coat dress and the excellent shoe choice.

    3. Dakota: On someone other than her I think it might be cute, even with those somewhat overpowering cuffs, but I can’t help but still find her “meh” in general even now. If oatmeal were a person it’d be Dakota Johnson.

Don’t get me wrong, I love oatmeal! You know, once I jazz it up with cinnamon and baked apples or almond butter and raspberries. On it’s own it’s just a bowl of mush. And that’s all I’m getting her – sparkly mush. (Also, while I like them, the shoes do not go with the dress at all.)

    4. Jessie: No. No, no, no. It cuts right across her at the worst possible angle. Who let her leave the house/hotel like this? Fire them immediately, Jessie – preferably, along with whoever told you that haircut was a good idea, unless it’s for a role.

  5. Jezz says:

Wow this is some seriously bad hair styling on all of them!!!

  6. Barbie1 says:

    Underwhelmed by all of them

  7. Becks1 says:

I normally like that length of Dakota’s dress, but I don’t think it works here. I think if the dress were full-length or knee length (maybe even a mini) it would be so much better.

I love Maggie G.’s style. Its quirky and fun ands she’s stayed consistent with that for ages now.

I think Olivia looks pretty good here, the dress looks cozy lol.

  8. Driver8 says:

Dakota’s dress looks like something Phyllis Diller would have worn in the 60s. Maggie and Olivia can wear anything and I wouldn’t care because they are so amazing. Jessie looks kind of cool.

    • Anne Call says:

Lol, Phyllis Diller would have loved that dress. I agree about Maggie and Olivia, they always look great because they’re both amazing. We are watching Peep Show, a very funny and inappropriate show, that was on air around 2008-2015 in England. Olivia Coleman is in the first 4 or 5 seasons and she is really good. She disappears around 2013-probably off to do movies and become famous.

      • Driver8 says:

Ooh, is Peepshow on any of the major streaming services? I’ve heard great things about it! I can look it up, nevermind, lol. Thanks for the reminder!

  9. Ninks says:

    Oh dear.

Thus is a great cast. Jessie Buckly is so talented. But I’m not a Ferante fan so I don’t know if I’ll be tempted to watch this.

  10. AmB says:

Oh dear, Kaiser, may I beg to ever so gently differ? Stuffing 4 ounces of foam inside a cap sleeve does not a strong shoulder make, it makes baby water wings. And it looks like her hairstylist was working from a completely different brief. Hard pass on Dakota, top to toe.

  11. AmB says:

Maggie and Olivia look like a couple of classy, confident dames With Stories to Tell. And their shoes, I love their shoes!

  12. Bettyrose says:

Olivia Colman looks stunning! She’s having a new era of glam, which is so cool because her younger looks were the furthest thing from glam. She’s the living embodiment of getting better with age. I get that with more fame she has to get more Hollywood and she’s probably had work done, but Dakota Johnson looks so basic and try hard standing next to Olivia Colman’s fab presence.

  13. ForWhatItsWorth says:

Dakota’s dress looks like what Nancy Kerrigan wore to the ‘94 Olympics – except Nancy didn’t have all of the feathers

  14. MsIam says:

Olivia’s dress looks itchy to me. And Maggie’s looks like fabric that was safety pinned together but I do like the color combo. I would like Dakota’s dress more if it didn’t have those little wing things on the shoulders. Or maybe if it just had the cap sleep without the longer portion and the feathers.

  15. Case says:

I love Dakota and I think the dress is so pretty if it weren’t for the feathers.

Did Olivia get a new stylist? She looks amazing? Her looks always used to be so stuffy looking and aged her a lot. She looks great here!

  16. Amy says:

Jessie is playing Sally Bowles on the West End soon which probably explains her haircut.

    • M says:

I get she probably was sick of pin curls and stocking caps, but this is not the solution. Just wear the wig.

    • M says:

  17. Laura says:

Dakota’s makeup is stunning. Wow. She just is so striking to me.

  18. Ann says:

Hmm. I don’t hate Dakota’s dress. I guess I would prefer it without the feathers but she looks good in it.

On Olivia’s dress….I like the material and I’m fine with the cut, but not together. It’s too bulky looking. A coat dress would be better in a more streamlined fabric, not a textured one like this. I do like that color though.

Never heard of Jessie. She has a learning curve to face on the red carpet. I think her hair is cute.

  19. Honey says:

    Love Maggie’s look 💯

  20. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I love Dakota’s look. A nice juxto of structured softness. Maggie looks like she just had sex and hurriedly tucked lol. And I agree that Coleman’s material would’ve made an awesome calf-lengthed pencil or blazer paired with a soft silk or some dainty top. That black dress though…lol.

  21. NotSoSocialButterfly says:

I thought it was okay until I got to the full shot showing the sleeves. Yeesh.

  22. Nibbi says:

Olivia suddenly looks mega young, fresh, and amazing, but not like she had any fake stuff done. HOW do they do that, man?

  23. Maria from Tercer mundo says:

Stop with the trend of feathers. It’s ridiculous! I only can think in naked birds lol
