Jennifer Lopez & Owen Wilson in the ‘Marry Me’ trailer: love it or hate it?

Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson film a scene for "Marry Me"

One of my favorite “fairy tale” rom-coms is Notting Hill. I actually hated Notting Hill when I first saw it, but it’s grown on me a lot over time. The fairy tale is that a famous, globally-recognized princess falls for a regular guy and that they figure it out and live happily ever after. Roman Holiday played around with this too, only the princess and the regular guy didn’t end up together in the end. It’s a narrative I enjoy in all its forms, and that’s what Marry Me is like. Replace “actress” with “super-famous pop star” and that’s pretty much the story. Marry Me is a film Jennifer Lopez put together with the intention of creating an entire album around a film she would star in. She executive produced it and put it together and hired Maluma as her errant, cheating fiance. Armie Hammer was originally cast as the “regular guy” but Armie left the film just before filming started (for obvious reasons) and they hired Owen Wilson to come in as a last-minute replacement. (Update: my bad, Armie Hammer was supposed to be in the other wedding movie, Shotgun Wedding, starring J.Lo) Here’s the trailer:

The part where you have to suspend your disbelief is the idea that a regular, nice-looking, middle-aged guy would have qualms about being married to Jennifer Lopez for any reason at all. Like, even if a guy thought it was an arrangement or a fauxmance to help out her image, 99 out of 100 guys would take that. Anyway, Owen Wilson usually has an easy chemistry with his leading ladies and J.Lo is an underrated romantic lead, so I suspect this will be pretty cute.

To promote the trailer (!!), Jennifer did a Today Show interview on Thursday and wouldn’t you know, she’s forever a romantic and she admits that she’s totally open to getting married again. When she was asked directly if she saw herself marrying again, she said: “Yeah, I guess. You know me, I’m a romantic. I always have been… I’ve been married a few times. I still believe in happily ever after for sure. One hundred percent.”

I can’t even imagine Armie Hammer in that role. An every day guy, math teacher, single dad? His ego is too big. You can see that in any movie he’s been in. Granted I’ve only seen 2..

  2. MrsBump says:

Honestly i’m all for a woman older than 40 being the romantic lead of a romcom, i dont like owen but ill watch.
And i hope that we’ll see more of these including with women who dont look as incredible as Jennifer.

    • Nina says:

I think it’s time for good quality rom coms to come back

    • bros says:

it looks awful. I cannot STAND watching JLO try to act (or sing for that matter). I can see her thought process all over her face, transparently TRYING to act. it’s awful. she uses the same baby acting voice in every single freaking romcom. GAH

I love to look at her though, and respect her hustle. Just NOT AS AN ACTRESS OMG

      • jen says:

you clearly haven’t watched Hustlers. Girl can act.

      • Paintergal says:

Her nasal speaking voice grates. Cannot watch her attempt to act.

      • Surly Gale says:

I thought she was amazing in ‘Enough’. Like Farrah Fawcett in “The Burning Bed” JLow did not get enough credit for her work in Enough. When I am feeling punched down on by life, sometimes I’ll choose it to remind me I have to fight for my health and well being.
        Piece of Pie…Piece of Cake…

      • Grant says:

I don’t think she’s a bad actress at all. Definitely not seeing what you describe when I watch her.

  3. Southern Fried says:

    Maluma! Hot hot hot!

  4. C R says:

why does his hair look like a wig? Is it a wig? It hurts my eyes.

    • North of Boston says:

His hair looks like a wig and his face looks like he’s had some resurfacing. It’s incredibly distracting.

    • Sankay says:

He has a receding hair line and for some reason needs to always cover it up. I can’t watch him anymore because the hair on his forehead is all I see. He needs to get over it.

      • girl_ninja says:

Why does he need to get over it? It’s his face/body. He can where his hair any way he likes. Just don’t look at him.

    • SM says:

That’s what I came here to ask. His hair is so weird. If he wants it to look natural he should get a better quality wig for sure

    • Chaine says:

Maybe it’s supposed to be a part of his character, like “Hi, I’m a dorky 50-something math teacher with a bad haircut and I don’t know anything about how to interact with the ladeeeez.”

    • Lizzie says:

Thank you, I couldn’t work it out myself but that’s what’s off. Hugh Grant cut his hair when he was no longer young enough to pull off the mop top and Owen should do the same.

    • lucy2 says:

I noticed he looked a little odd in that photo, but figured it may just be a weird moment. I swear my family and friends always manage to post photos where I’m in the background talking or something and I look deranged.

    • TeamAwesome says:

His hair has always looked that horrible BUT, this isn’t how it looked for Loki at all, so was *that* a wig, I guess?

  5. Lady Baden-Baden says:

I think JLo’s underrated as an actress, full stop. Great screen presence. Now if she’d just focus on that and stop with the caterwauling…

Trailer looks cheesy as all hell. I’m in!

    • Yup, Me says:

I think Jennifer is seriously underrated as a producer and I’ve loved learning more about her as a business woman and creative force behind her films.

I’ve resigned myself to the caterwauling. And she’s continued working on her voice and singing skill, so I treat it like I used to treat the broccoli on my plate at dinner as a child. I don’t prefer it, but it came with the rest of dinner.

I’m curious how she’s planned the marketing for this film considering the cheating famous fiancé so closely matches her own life and experience. Has she nixed those questions from all interviews at the outset?

      • Joey says:

Agreed! Also, it’s not talked about but she has been working exclusively with female directors. Hustlers was an all female film crew, marry me directed by a woman, and the mother also directed by a woman.
She should be recognized for that as it will inspire other actress/producers to do the same! We need more women behind the camera.

      • lucy2 says:

To be honest I’ve never been a fan of her acting or singing, but she’s a very hardworking woman, great at business, and great at being a star.
This movie looks silly, but I’ll probably end up watching it eventually.

      • CapPhD says:

Exactly. I am a fan of her HUSTLE, her work ethic. She’s also VERY glamorous. And she is the purest Leo woman to ever exist.

      • Marietta2381 says:

@capphd I personally think she gives a horrible name to Leo women. I am a Leo woman and I can be alone (I am currently and love being single). Whereas, she is incredibly insecure and cannot be alone for a moment. If she was secure enough in herself, she wouldn’t care. I mean she’s JLo! She’s gorgeous!

A real Leo woman would stand proud being alone. She’s too afraid of it. She wants people to know she’s always got someone because she’s so worthy of a man’s affection/love. All men want her. (And don’t get me wrong, I get that, but take a breather between men!)

Yes, she is very alluring, glamorous, and she has hustle. Great business sense. And I do love that she champions women in the film industry. But no, I think she does not give the same “purest Leo woman” vibe.

    • TeamMeg says:

Ditto to everything. Trailer made me smile wide. I’ll look forward to watching this on Netflix—no hesitation!

  6. Noki says:

I love Jlo movies and aome are rather decent. But wow this one looks ridiculous. Ans the movie is out on Valentines Day why such early promo!?

    • Carolnr says:

      i agree!
i think they are promoting this film way too early! By the time this movie comes out in Feb., the public will have lost interest…

  7. Seraphina says:

I agree JLO is under rated as an actress. And while this is cheesy and fairytale-ish, I am here for it. And after the past two years, I don’t think that thinking this would never happen would be out of the question.

  8. Amy Bee says:

I saw the trailer during the Adele interview. It looked ok. Not really my kind of movie but I hope does well because I’m a JLo fan.

  9. Zapp Brannigan says:

This looks like an absolutely ridiculous premise for a film, and I can’t wait to see it. Confession time: I love hallmark movies, I started watching them after being diagnosed with complex PTSD as they were soothing mush at the time, the Christmas season has begun and I’m in heaven at the diabetes inducing films they have churned out.

    • Oliphant says:

Same to everything!!! After the last few years I’m in dire need of some frothy nonsense. This looks a perfect relaxing watch!

    • better.than.scrubs says:

Cosign. It is completely unbelievable and probably a terrible movie but I will absolutely watch the hell out of it. In addition to Notting Hill, I get Music & Lyrics vibes – now, THAT was an underrated romcom! Hugh Grant manages to combine his affable, floppy haired romantic side with his cheeky, cynical, little bit sleazy side and it’s perfection.

      • Ann says:

I really like that one too.

      • Joey says:

I actually don’t get Notting Hill vibes from this at all I get more Begin Again vibes starting Kiera Knightly, Mark Ruffalo and Adam Levine. Definitely going to see marry me and taking my daughter. After the rough past two years we need some fun, romance and fluff in our life! 🙂

      • lucy2 says:

I liked Begin Again. Notting Hill is probably my favorite though.

    • Watson says:

I started watching cartoons during my time with ptsd particularly Rick and Morty or Japanese anime. So far removed from reality that it was soothing to me too!

    • WithTheAmerican says:

Same. I’m here for her wedding dress, which is g-d fabulous!

  10. Mimi says:

Looks like cheesy fun and I will watch the shit out this when it streams but I wouldn’t pay to see it in a theater. Whatever you want to say about her, she’s good at romcoms.

  11. D says:

In the first picture she finally looks a little bit closer to her real age than she normally does! Jennifer and Owen are the same age and I can sort of see that in the untouched pictures. That’s all I’ve got because the movie looks Wedding Planner-terrible. I like them both but I don’t think I could sit through the whole thing. As for Notting Hill. I hate it. Julia Roberts is such a b*tch to him in that movie and I have no idea why he would want to be with her other than she is beautiful and famous.

    • Ann says:

I don’t like her in that movie either. The best about the film is the setting and the warm dynamic with Hugh’s character and his friends, roommate and sister. Anna is OK at the end of the movie but before that she bugs me.

    • Joey says:

I didn’t like Notting Hill either for the same reason you mentioned!

    • Amy Too says:

I watched notting hill yesterday on accident for the first time. I was going for you’ve got mail and googled “bookstore romcom” and got notting hill, and remembered that was also super famous and everyone’s favorite so I figured that must be what I’m looking for.

I think the problem was how Julia Roberts acted. Her lines were all okay lines but the way she delivered them made them seem snotty and made her seem cold and awful. Most everything she said could have worked so much better if it had more of a light hearted/joking vibe to it, but she was just like dead serious and distant. It wasn’t believable. The chemistry wasn’t believable. I didn’t get why he liked her at all other than she was pretty and famous, but he seemed like a decent guy who wasn’t even that into Hollywood, so the fact that she was a famous actress didn’t seem like it would have been a huge selling point for him. She was mean, the plot just kept shi**ing on him with things that I’m not sure i’d he able to get over (she had a serious BF, she made him take the trash and dishes out and made out with her BF in front of him, she was rude when she met him and then just kissed him without his permission and then left and told him not to say anything, she assumed he called the paps on himself and her and wouldn’t talk about it, she didn’t try to make things easier for him when she invited him over and he walked into a press junket and had to ask questions about a film he had never seen, she said he was a nobody to the other actor on set.) Where were the good times? I was also confused at these supposedly highly intrusive paparazzi who don’t seem to follow them around when they’re at restaurants and on dates and jumping fences to get into gardens, but who will show up en masse at his home (yet act really well behaved: they rang once, they were quiet unless the door was opened, they completely ignored a ground floor window that didn’t have any curtains or blinds in it when they were supposedly there to be so intrusive?) I’d like to see the movie again but with someone else playing Anna and reading the lines with a more playful/flirty bent.

Today I’m going to actually watch you’ve got Mail. lol.

  12. Deering24 says:

Notting Hill worked to some degree because Grant and Roberts had real chemistry. Wilson and JLo, from this trailer…um, not so much. She looks like she’d eat him alive.

  13. Becks1 says:

I like JLo’s romantic movies – I will watch the Wedding Planner anytime its on TV, lol – but i’m not sure about this one, it doesn’t look that appealing to me. I’ll probably watch it next summer when my husband is on his annual “boys weekend” lol.

  14. Karisma says:

I think it was in shotgun wedding that armie hammer was supposed to be

    • Chaine says:

that’s what i thought too… whatever movie it was that they fired Armie was also supposed to star Lenny Kravitz and i don’t see Lenny in this trailer at all.

  15. Vanessa says:

I want to see this one. No need Oscar worthy performance just a good romantic comedy.

  16. jo says:

This looks terrible, even for a silly romcom.

  17. Lena says:

This is just too meta – a flashy entertainer dumps her cheating fiancée and immediately rebounds. Oh boy. She must really have had weddings on the brain to do two rom coms in a row about —weddings. Owen and JLo look eerily filtered in this like they aren’t real. Maybe I’m just not used to that over produced look of rom coms anymore. I feel like I’ve aged out of them – although JLo obviously doesn’t feel she has. I remember Tom hanks saying that he and Meg Ryan couldn’t do them into their fifties – humm.

  18. Mcmmom says:

I will watch it because I’m a fan of hers and I like pretty much everything that Owen Wilson is in (except for Wes Anderson movies because I can’t stand Wes Anderson, but that’s a different post for a different day), but I don’t think they have any chemistry. I didn’t think she had any with Matthew Mc whatever (too lazy to look up the spelling – bongo playing TX gubernatorial candidate) either. The only actor she has had any real chemistry with was Clooney.

But whatever – the trailer made me tear up because…reasons…so I’ll watch it.

  19. Case says:

This plot looks really silly to me and is a sort of weird re-entry for JLo into the romcom genre. But I have to say I’ve always really enjoyed her acting and will probably end up watching this with my mom at some point.

  20. Joey says:

I’m wondering how good this will be as it was filmed 2 years ago and has been sitting on a shelf since then. I’ll still watch on steaming. I’m annoyed she is doing 2 wedding movies cause I think she is better than that but cest la vie!

  21. Gigi says:

Sorry but ugh. Absolutely agree with everyone who’s saying he looks bewigged and waxy. It’s unsettling, and there’s zero chemistry between them. Not sure even JLo‘s romcom superpowers can overcome it. Wrong guy for the part, imho.

    • Oliphant says:

It’s odd because He randomly zoomed past me on a bike in Atlanta recently and did not look at all how he looks in the trailer- maybe it’s some weird makeup thing? Or the hair?

      • Lena says:

I was thinking maybe the movie camera has a certain filter over it to make everything look kinda fake?

  22. Concern Fae says:

I love the fact that this is written by the guy who created the Leverage TV series. High hopes.

  23. Rilincmom says:

This movie looks cute and fun and we need more of that these days!

  24. Lory says:

Sorry when I see him all I see is a guy who worked with Woody Allen and denies the existence of his daughter. No way is he a romantic lead.

  25. Ann says:

He’s much too unattractive to be her love interest. We never see hot man / unattractive woman love interest.

    • elle says:

He’s crossed over from quirky looking to distracting. He looks like he wandered in from a different movie.

  26. Coco says:

Ya it looks bad and way to early to promote, by the time it comes out in February people are going to be over it or have no interest in it.

  27. Jules says:

    lol this looks so bad.

  28. Bookie says:

I’ll watch it on cable happily.

  29. TIFFANY says:

    It’s gonna get my money.

Not every movie has to be a masterpiece think tank.

  30. JJ says:

Notting Hill is my ultimate guilty pleasure film, especially for a rainy day. I hope this is good…

  31. Allegra says:

What’s going on in her temple area? There’s a big lump. Is that a swelling from an injection, maybe?

  32. pamspam says:

I don’t particularly enjoy her as a performer, but I sure do respect her hustle. She’s a badass!

  33. MangoAngelesque says:

But….Jennifer Lopez can’t act! She’s always been just terrible! I don’t know why people try to push her as some sort of sleeper cell if acting talent, because she’s just….not.

Now, the woman has a work ethic like no other. I think she’d be great as an entrepreneur, a producer, an exec.

But the moment she starts acting or singing, it’s over. She’s got supreme confidence, so she believes she’s amazing, but lord no.

    • Jaded says:

Totally agree. That trailer was cringey and I’m proud to say I’ve never seen a JL movie and never will. As for her singing, she’s just lucky that auto-tune was invented.

      • shanaynay says:

Totally agree with everything you said.

      • Al says:

How can you totally agree if you’ve never seen one of her movies lol

      • Joey says:

Well if you’ve never seen a jlo movie then how in the world can you judge her acting skills? That was just an ignorant comment on your part.

      • Jaded says:

@Joey — I’ve not seen lots of movies. I’ve not bought lots of albums. I’ve not watched lots of musicians perform. That doesn’t mean I can’t have an opinion on them. I choose what to watch, listen to and attend based on my own preferences and she isn’t one of them. My comment was not ignorant, I simply don’t like her.

    • Deering24 says:

The quality of her performances depends a lot on the director. Not every director is skilled with actors.

  34. Nikki* says:

They seem like a REALLY WEIRD coupling: his persona is laid back and mussed up, she’s all ambition, control, and self discipline. His easy charm goes well with a lot of costars, but this still seems so odd to me.

  35. Margo says:

Old fashioned Rom-Com – SIGN ME UP!

  36. Isa says:

I will watch it. I need lighthearted stuff right now.

  37. canichangemyname says:

The plotline is ridiculous and I can’t stand Owen Wilson. BUT – I do love JLo and I’ve had a crappy year, so I could see myself watching this for some mindless, romcom fun.

  38. TEALIEF says:

I can’t say I’d give it a hard pass.  If I’m driving past it on cable, I might stop and look.

  39. FF says:

I’ll probably watch it, lol. I don’t have any issues here (a few elsewhere, though). I’ve never had a problem with Lopez’ acting. Give the woman credit. I swear some people just resent her because she’s still around. (Ngl, I seem to see that subtext with WoC a bit more than the law of averages would prescribe.)

  40. MelOn says:

This movie is cringe. I would only watch via cable on a night I’m desperately bored and have had more than a drinks.

  41. Catherine says:

This movie is a total vanity piece for jlo. Wilson must really need money because this Hallmark dreck is completely beneath him. Jlo is all heavy makeup and fashion as usual . The trouble with the fake Hollywood world and the real world is, in the real world, if your work is crap, you don’t get paid or you get fired. In Hollywood, you get your millions upfront no matter how crappy your work. And if you’re attractive, the cult members continue to keep you rich. It’s pretty gross.
