Cannot watch movies with animal abuse. I wish they wouldn’t dramatize it so explicitly. I’m sure it’s a great but super depressing movie like pretty much everything Jane Campion does. (She is great, don’t get me wrong, but she definitely has a tone.)

    • Monica says:

I tried to watch Yellowstone, but the very first scene of the series is a horse suffering and having to be put down on the spot. I know it’s fake, but the emotions are real.

    • Bread and Circuses says:

There is a website, doesthedogdie dot com, that allows you to look up common triggering scenes in a film or television show, such as animal deaths or abuse.

It relies on people coming to the site and reporting those scenes, so it’s not perfect, but it’s pretty good as a way to quickly check whether a show has something in it you don’t want to watch.

    • stagaroni says:

I’m with you, I cannot watch movies with abuse, animal or child. I cannot understand the love for, “It’s a Wonderful Life.” A child is hit about the ear until he bleeds. It is horrifying.

  2. bettyrose says:

I’ll probably get slammed for saying this, but I think Keanu is a really good person and he’s in a lot of fun movies. I don’t think he’s much of an actor, but he’s definitely a great movie star.

    • FHMom says:

I don’t think he is regarded as a great actor. But, yes, he is a great movie star and human being.

    • blisteringsun says:

the first movie i saw him in was my own private idaho, and he was amazing. maybe it was being able to act alongside river phoenix, but reeves was amazing in the film (everyone was). because i loved it so much, i’ll forever be biased for reeves-i think he’s really good in select films. i just don’t think he has the range to do some of the projects he’s taken on. but i do think when he finds the right combination of crew/director/script, etc., he’s pretty amazing.

      • bettyrose says:

I haven’t seen My Own Private Idaho since it was first in the theaters, and I remember being disappointed. It wasn’t the sexy River Phoenix team drama I wanted. Maybe I should try it again as an adult with more appreciation for artsy films.

      • Ana170 says:

He’s given a lot of really good performances. It depends on the role. His voice lets him down a lot as it doesn’t seem to have much control over pitch. So he’s not Oscar-caliber but he’s nowhere as bad as people say.

      • Deering24 says:

He was right good as an abusive Southern husband in that Sam Raimi thriller, The Gift. Not only was his accent on-point, he was genuinely hateful. He’s generally better in contemporary material than period works (though he was fun to watch in Much Ado Without Nothing.)

    • Becks1 says:

Yeah, I definitely think he’s a great movie star, but his acting….leaves a lot to be desired. But I usually still enjoy his movies bc I think he picks big action type movies or roles that suit his lack of acting ability (like Bill and Ted’s, and yes I know it was decades ago, lol.)

But I have heard that he is a really good Shakespearean actor.

      • Lightpurple says:

I saw him many, many years ago perform in The Tempest out in the Berkshires and he was good. And quite pleasing to gaze upon.

    • BayTampaBay says:

“I’ll probably get slammed for saying this, but I think Keanu is a really good person”

I’ll probably get slammed for saying this, but I think Bob Dole was a decent person. He was one of the main politicians responsible for getting the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) passed in congress.

      • Ana170 says:

Bob Dole was a Trumper that helped start the trend of weaponizing abortion in politics. He did some good things but that doesn’t extend to him as whole.

      • Anne Call says:

Yep, supported Trump and had no issues with the insurrection. Hard pass.

      • bettyrose says:

LOL! Okay, I worded that strangely. It’s not very controversial that Keanu is a good person (just my opinion that he’s not a great actor, but no one slammed me for it and I’m grateful).

      • stagaroni says:

@Ana170, when Bob Dole ran for office in ’96, he tried to introduce a “declaration of tolerance” into the GOP platform, but it was resoundingly rejected. Yes, he was pro life, but he respected those who had differing viewpoints, even in his own party, and didn’t feel their voices should be silenced.

    • tealily says:

I don’t know who would slam you for that. Isn’t love for Keanu universal?

    • Monica says:

I think Keanu gets a bad rap. He kind of acts as himself, but so do many well-regarded A-list actors.

    • Anony83 says:

I think the person most aware of Keanu’s limitations as an actor is Keanu though, so that’s always nice to see.

  3. Another Anna says:

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not shedding any tears for Chris Cuomo, but I think it’s shady as Hell for CNN to fire him for this. CNN said they found “additional information” but the original sin was Chris covering/interviewing his brother at all, which CNN knew about and was only too happy to flog for ratings. This feels like CNN trying to shove all the blame onto Cuomo and paint itself as the victim. Cuomo deserves blame 100% and I don’t disagree with the decision to fire him. I just don’t want to see CNN try to sweep their part of this under the rug.

    • FHMom says:

I agree. CNN got good ratings when Chris interviewed his brother at the height of the pandemic. It was entertaining, but a conflict of interest. Plus, Chris is an entitled douche. Remember when he was spotted out in the Hamptons when he was Covid positive?

    • WithTheAmerican says:

Yeah I mean they have Toobin back, so standards are not high.

      • bettyrose says:

OMG, Toobin, that guy will forever have an implied asterisk by his name.

      • Another Anna says:

        Ugh, Toobin.

      • Lightpurple says:

I understand the disgust with Toobin completely but, as a labor attorney, I have to believe that he still has his job because his offense was unrelated to his job at CNN. It is very difficult to fire someone for things that happen outside the job. He did the lose the job at which the disgusting act occurred. CNN suspended him for a long time, which may have been the most they were able to do under the terms of the contract for an offense that happened outside that particular employment.

      • Anne Call says:

Speaking of Toobin, Looking forward to seeing what’s going to happen to Roman Roy after his indecent behavior on Succession.

    • Same says:

CNN is opinion, not news, they gave up journalistic integrity for ratings a long time ago . It’s Fox without the racists.

      • bettyrose says:

I only ever put on CNN in hotel rooms, and I’m always surprised at how there’s always some news magazine/entertainment style story on. You actually have to put on HLN to get news updates.

      • AmyB says:

@Same Exactly. CNN and Fox are essentially the same. The don’t just cover simple “facts” of the news. These media journalists give their slanted political spin on it, as if it was actual objective fact. Which has become more and more dangerous, as so much of it becomes out right fucking lies. Fox News is literally responsible for continuing to spread the election 2020 lies that Trump actually won, lies about the Covid vaccine (when in fact, it has been revealed that Fox’s policy concerning vaccines for its employees is significantly stricter than any mandate given by the Biden Administration LOL). CNN is all about their opinions as well, without much basis on fact.

      • virginfangirl says:

Amy8, I completely disagree that CNN and Fox are one in the same. Fox has Tucker Carlson, Lauren Ingraham, Mark Levin. Levin actually was encouraging our states to use their own republican electorates instead of Bidens electorates when Biden won those states. Scary stuff. And Carlson won a court case about him lying because his lawyer argued no one actually believes Tucker Carlson tells the truth on Fox news. Fox has some of the most deplorable hosts I’ve ever witnessed, with no equivalence to those on CNN. Fox is defcon 10 level scary with the conspiracy stories and threat to democracy. If it was only some guy pleasuring himself that I had to worry about on Fox I would sleep better at night. Fox never fired Hannity when he literally went on the campaign trail with Trump.

    • pottymouth pup says:

allegedly, sexual harassment claims against him may be why he was fired flat out

      • stagaroni says:

@pottymouth, yes, this is what the attorney for the alleged victim is telling news outlets. The victim reportedly had documentation to back up her claims and gave it to CNN.

I watched “Power of the Dog” 3 times this weekend…it’s this way whenever I see a Campion film…I saw “The Piano” twice opening weekend…the cinematography was ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING…however it was Kodi’s performance as Pete that has me GOBSMACKED! When I tell you I ADORE that character and how he handled obstacles…I AM NOT LYING ❣ And that scene where he did his model stroll not giving AF about the homophobic POS who taunted him…had me HOLLERING with laughter…Kodi and Jane better get ALL the flowers! Everyone bought their A game…which is what ALWAYS happens when you work for one of the BEST Directors…EVA❣

    • TeeBee says:

I saw it a couple of days ago, without knowing anything about it and was blown away. The tension was palpable, mostly because the sympathetic characters are so relatable, and the antagonist so discomfiting and seething, you didn’t know what to expect!

I do not like watching animal cruelty, but I will say that it was handled very, professionally. In a way that evoked the emotion she must have wanted, but not gratuitously. I don’t know that there is a director like Jane Campion, you can trust being in her hands on whatever journey she takes you on.

If you have hesitations based on the reviews, I tell you to overcome them, for if you don’t you may miss a viewing experience that you will not likely see again. It is worth the discomfort, for that is what this movie is, full of discomfort. But the conclusion will leave you… or at least it did me, feeling hopeful. Not for the world in general, but for the character’s that you came to care about.

  5. Erin says:

I actually walked in my husband watching it at the part right before that where Benny goes running after him. My husband tried watching it, while I was doing other things, a few times but he says he keeps falling asleep. Maybe it takes some time to get into?

    • Lala11_7 says:

@Erin…I OVERSTAND what you’re saying…I’m indoctrinated to Jane’s style…where the visuals & environment plays a part in the films…but her timing is a slow boil with a shocking twist at the end…I also love how the minor characters in her movies are SO expressive & elemental…there are NO SMALL PARTS in a Campion film…I could have watched s movie about the maids & the workers too!

  6. schmootc says:

I clicked through that Joshua Malina story to read what Mel Gibson said to Winona Ryder and am just appalled. That is one really awful man and no one should be working with him. Yuck.

    • megs283 says:

Yes. I need to intentionally watch some things with Joshua Malina in it. Mel Gibson is awful, he has always been awful (Winona’s story, OMG), and he is still awful.

  7. WithTheAmerican says:

Ok well now that the day is over I can confess that I don’t like Keanu.

    ::runs for exit::

  8. Barbie1 says:

F*ck Mel Gibson. Scarjo looks gorgeous. I was shocked by the horse abuse in that movie omg. Was not expecting that. Keanu is a movie star just not a great one. Papa Cuomo must be rolling over in his grave. Jessica’s makeup/skin looks flawless.
