Kelly Clarkson jokes that she’s a ‘red-flag collector’ & could do an exhibit with them

25th Annual Critics' Choice Awards - Arrivals

Kelly Clarkson and Brandon Blackstock’s divorce is still not complete, but they did bifurcate their divorce and they’re on their way to figuring out the money and property issues. Kelly’s divorce was awful for her – Brandon and his father were also her managers, and they defrauded her out of millions of dollars. Then Brandon wanted something like $450K A MONTH in support (and he ended up getting $200K a month temporarily). Brandon also tried to have the court invalidate Kelly’s prenup too! The court upheld it several months ago. You get the idea: Brandon is a sleazy golddigger and he tried to swindle Kelly out of all of her money. Kelly understands now that she refused to see all of the red flags popping up over the years. She spoke to the Love Someone podcast about Christmas music, sarcasm and red flags:

Missing the red flags during her marriage to Blackstock: “I regret nothing. Even unfortunate things that happen in your life or hard things, ’cause we can do hard things. But also I feel like that’s what shapes you, it’s what makes you a better person, it’s what makes you recognize: OK I missed those red flags, I missed that, I ignored that on purpose.”

She joked that her next album could be called “Red Flag Collector.” “I mean… I’m just collecting them. I was apparently wanting to do some kind of exhibit with a lot of them.”

She’s open to what the future holds: “Like in relationships, it’s hard to be as creative as I can because I wear my heart on my sleeve…I mean… you never know about love. I think we’re engineered, especially from where I’m from, to have to have that.”

Her sarcastic Christmas album: “I’m supposed to make this Christmas record, and I love Christmas music, so I was like, I don’t know how to be happy, maybe I could be sarcastic,” the singer shared, adding that the idea of “everything might be canceled” inspired her new single “Christmas Isn’t Cancelled (Just You).” “No one’s ever really released a breakup Christmas song before, ’cause like, why would you? That’s kind of messed up. It is a happy song! It is a very happy, empowering song, because what the song says is, ‘Too bad for you, Christmas isn’t canceled. I’m gonna put every damn light in the world on my house and I’m not going to sit here and cry any more over you.’”

People have this debate all the time, that the “she missed the red flags, she ignored the red flags” puts too much of the onus on the woman being victimized, gaslighted or lied to. In this case, Brandon Blackstock is a con artist who defrauded her and financially abused her. There needs to be more energy towards condemning him and calling out his behavior, rather than Kelly owning the fact that she perhaps willfully ignored some of the red flags. I mean, it can be both. Unequally both. Brandon is 85% to blame. 15% of it was Kelly ignoring the red flags.

  2. Bryn says:

So happy she started the marriage with a prenup.

  3. Lucy2 says:

I hope she is coming out of all this ok. She seems like a great, fun person, and he sucks.

What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger!!

Ok I’ll see myself out now…

  5. Nina says:

The thing about the players/con artists/gold diggers is that they it’s part of their ‘job’ to be incredibly charming and make you want to be with them. I’m an old now in a wonderful partnership, but as I look back on my own love mistakes, the worst ones were the men who made it too easy to love them.

  6. Lee says:

I love her!!! I know that she has always had a media presence, but I am so thrilled that she has seemed to absolutely BLOW UP since her breakup. So glad that there seems to be nothing but support & love for her during what must have been an extremely difficult time. She seems to be everywhere now & I’m loving it. She seems so genuine. Her personality shines and it’s very endearing. National Treasure!

  7. Cessily says:

Wow as another red flag collector who is buried in them, because we tend to blame ourselves for how horrible other treat us 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 God bless her. I hope she continues to give hope and shine.

  8. Twin falls says:

Her sense of humor about it all is the best! I’ll happily play her break up Christmas song.

  9. Meg says:

I remember Kelly saying earlier in her career even fans would question her sexuality because she was single for so long. She joked being from Texas people grew up saying women need to marry before they lose their ‘glow’.
Women beat themselves up for not seeing the red flags or acting on them but we’re socialized to think we’re wrong or bad without a husband.
I spent a Thanksgiving on a beach in Hawaii after removing myself from a toxic situation. After growing up in Minnesota I was in heaven from the weather let alone no longer being around toxic people so I did not understand people who saw me there said how sad you’re alone on a holiday on the beach by yourself? Yeah lady I’m living my best life!

  10. Joe says:

One of the best things I’ve heard recently is “Yeah, I saw the red flags. I thought they were a carnival!” 😂

  11. Rhiley says:

She recently did some kind sing off with Ariana Grande and her voice never sounded better. It was great.

So, I’m taking advantage of the holidays to go through the recent stories I missed while sick and despite knowing that no one will ever see this I just have to say: A Fine Frenzy’s Winter White is absolutely a sarcastic Christmas break-up song. It’s got one of my favorite Christmas lyrics of all-time:

“Merry Christmas/ Happy goddamn new year.”

I am forever frustrated that its containing Christmas EP is not on Spotify. If you can find it, it’s well worth a listen.

I’m doing what you’re doing! Thanks for the rec, just listened to it. Happy goddamn New Year, Terra!
