Rose McIver of Ghosts: ‘I’m famous for carrying everything I own with me at all times’

This story was recently picked up by Showbiz Cheat Sheet, but it’s based on an interview Rose McIver did with Collider in November. She was promoting her fabulous CBS sitcom, Ghosts. It’s coming back next week after a midseason hiatus and I’m excited about that. It’s a fun, fluffy show where a couple moves from the city into an historic mansion in the country. Rose’s character hits her head and she can see and talk to all the ghosts inhabiting the property. It co stars Utkarsh Ambudkar, whose star is definitely on the rise. It’s an American remake of a BBC sitcom of the same name, which is available now on HBO. (I’ve seen a few episodes of the British version and that’s a little too dark and cringey for my tastes, but you might like it.)

I know Rose from Ghosts, iZombie and the Christmas Prince series on Netflix. She was also in The Lovely Bones and on Once Upon a Time. When I watched this interview I was floored to hear her accent! She’s from New Zealand, but I never would have known since she has a perfect American accent. I related the most to the section where she said that she carries a ton of sh-t with her always, because I’m the same way. If you need a Tylenol, Advil, Benadryl, water, Band Aid or snack, I’ve got it. Here’s some of what she told Collider.

What is something you can’t be on set without?
I’m quite famous for carrying everything I own with me at all times. I don’t know where it comes from. It must be some sort of inherited behavior, but I carry [everything].

Just in case, I’m going to need my drink bottle, my thermos, my book. I’ve got my script, my binder, I’ve got an iPad, and I’ll have it all under my arms at any given moment. I’ll move ten feet and I’ll carry it, just in case I need it. It’s quite bizarre. It’s got to be some sort of hoarding style technique. I’ve had family say it’s like me carrying around all my teddy bears. It’s the same mentality. Just in case I need all these mates.

There’s a lot more in the interview and it was fun to watch because it’s very in depth. I came away from it with so much respect for Rose. She loves acting and she’s really grateful for her career. Rose has been a working actor since she was a child and has held other jobs, like working in retail. She said that she’s not convinced that her career is “all sorted” and that she appreciates and is excited about all the opportunities she gets. She also revealed that they shoot in Montreal. Rose, 33, is in a relationship with Australian artist George Byrne and is child free.

As for her carrying everything with her, I’m very much like that. I keep a lot of stuff in my car too, just in case of an emergency. It got worse when I had a child, but I’ve always been like this. I’ve never been a minimalist, which you can surely tell about me if you’ve read any of our Amazon posts. If there’s something that will make my life easier in even a small way I want it!

They are so cute together!

I’m sorry but the British version or Ghosts is much better, I tried the US version and did not like it.

    • Lady Baden-Baden says:

Another big fan of the British version here!

    • HandforthParish says:

      I agree.

I love the Horrible Histories crew!

      • Sally says:

Came down here to say that, how dare you slander the fabulous Horrible History troupe! ;D
I do like Rose from her iZombie days though and I’m glad she’s working, she’s a likeable and capable lead.

    • Dss says:

I like the American version but the English version is far superior.

    • Yup, Me says:

I just binged the British version over the holidays and I loved it (with the exception of how foolish they’ve made her boyfriend at times). I’ll check out the US version because I like both Rose and Utkarsh in other projects.

I agree, the British one is fantastic. I found the US one to be almost hyper and too sunny in the beginning, and it paled in comparison – but I do think it’s settled down and found it’s own voice now, and is entertaining also. But I do love the British one more, and it definitely has a better “haunted house” vibe. Plus Mary and Kitty are the best.

This show was way better than I expected, can’t wait for it to come back. The actor who plays Isaac is my favorite, I’m glad he’s getting more work. He stole every scene he was in on “The Other Two”.

  3. North of Boston says:

I love love love the original British version of Ghosts. It’s so sweet and the characters really come to life (so to speak), maybe because many of them have worked together for years in a comedy troupe.

The US version is cute, though I forget it’s on and then usually can only watch an episode or 2 (even though I might be in the mood for a binge) because the network’s streaming platform is annoying and often stingy with episodes. I should probably just set my DVR.

Yay on them for a second season; I bet they will get even better over time.

Also, go Tinkerbell! (Seeing the OUAT reference I guessed she played the blue fairy. TPTB on that show had a type I guess, or at least did for the fairy characters)

I am not a sitcom person at all. But I watched this on Paramount Plus and I fell in love with it. So happy it will be back next season and new episodes are coming this month.

I’m sure the UK version is superior and will try to find it. i’m actually glad I did not see the UK version first. I can’t watch the US Office since the original is so perfect.

    • HandforthParish says:

Having loved the UK Office, I started the US and once they moved away from the original, I much preferred the US.
David Brent is awful- Michael Scott, while frequently terrible, has a good heart.
I also love the US co-workers. They barely feature in the UK version, as it is so short.

  5. JanetDR says:

We’re enjoying this show! I loved her on I Zombie too. She is adorable!

  6. Sigmund says:

Haven’t watched the British version yet, but the US version is really funny and charming. If you’ve only watched the first episode or two, it takes until about episode four or so to really hit its stride. The actor that plays her husband is really funny and perfect for the role, too.

  7. LaUnicaAngelina says:

I love this show (thanks CB for the req) and I enjoyed her other show iZombie. I plan on checking out the British version but I do enjoy the lightness of the US version.

  8. kimmy says:

I don’t know anything about her, but I have had a little crush on Utkarsh ever since Pitch Perfect. He stole every scene he was in, IMO and I’m happy to see him more and more. He played the love interest in Brittany Runs a Marathon (a very cute Prime watch if anyone is interested!) and had the same effect! I haven’t checked out this show yet, but I’ll have to add it to my list.

  9. Nicole says:

I love both shows equally. It took me a few episodes to come around to the US Ghosts, but I’m really loving the US characters, particularly Brandon Jones and Devan Long. They all have the best chemistry. I even like Mark, a reoccurring guest on the US show, who is utterly confused by Rose’s behavior.

If you haven’t seen either, you won’t be disappointed.

  10. Bean says:

My family all absolutely LOVE this show! It’s the only TV show we watch. The British version was way too dark for us too (and we love British TV, Goes Wrong Show anyone?) the American version just feels happier.

  11. Meredith says:

I love Utkarsh! I’ve been a fan since he played Rishi in The Mindy Project. I’m adding both the US and UK versions to my list.

  12. L4Frimaire says:

I love this show. It’s so funny. This and Abbot Elementary are my two fun upbeat go to shows. Haven’t seen the UK version yet. It didn’t really register at first but watched a few on demand and been hooked since. One of the actresses I’d followed on Twitter so wanted to see her work. She’s really good. Hope they show more of the characters back stories and they get that house repaired. The Alberta storyline with the obsessed fan was so good and the one where Hetty possessed Jay. She’s probably my favorite character.

  13. Chicken says:

Just popping by to say that I love Rose McIver, she seems like a delight, and Ghosts is really cute and worth giving a spin. Also, if you never saw iZombie, it was really, really good and I still follow the cast to this day (Rahul Kohli also seems awesome).

  14. The Recluse says:

My Mom and I love this show and are looking forward to more and more of it.
I love those sad sack characters in the Cholera pit who would just like the lights left on.
Cute video of the actors being told they had a second season coming.
    “Sleep Mode happened.” Fun times.
Someday I will watch the British one. I wish they would just show it on BBC America, which shows precious little British programmes anymore as it is.

  15. Anita says:

OMG “is child-free” – love that phrase! The next time someone asks me if I have children, I will reply, no, child free person here, LOL. Thank you!

I love Rose McIver, thank you so much for the link to the interview. They talk about having things in your bag for each day, which I do, although with my aching back it is getting harder and harder to carry the heavy bag.
But I understand what you were saying about things in the car. With the daily time constraints, it’s a privilege to have a car and things nearby (e.g. workout clothes, hiking shoes, etc.) or supplies to drink and eat. (I imagine this is even more the case with kids).
But I also move between two cities often and yes, there is a general list of things I always have in my luggage no matter where I go.

And I agree with Wheel of Fortune!!! Rose seems like a nice girl I’d love to have coffee with.
