Trumpet the Bloodhound won Westminster Kennel Club’s Best In Show

Last night, Westminster Kennel Club bestowed its greatest honor, Best In Show, to a bloodhound! I’m so used to Best In Show going to one of the smaller dogs and I always want to see big dogs get some love, so here we are. The bloodhound’s name is Trumpet, in what I’m praying is not some kind of ode to the orange fascist. Trumpet beat out a Samoyed, a Maltese and a German shepherd. Trumpet isn’t even a regular at these kinds of dog shows – his owner, Heather Buehner, only started competing Trumpet in January. It’s a real rags-to-riches story (or something). Second place went to the French Bulldog.

Anyway, Trumpet seems like a cool guy. I’ve never had a bloodhound but I love them. I love all big dogs, I love setters and spaniels. Trumpet is the first-ever bloodhound to win Westminster’s Best In Show. We love an groundbreaker!

His official name is “GCHB CH FLESSNER’S TOOT MY OWN HORN” hence the name Trumpet. I loved him but didn’t think he stood a chance against the GSD and English Setter. I was so happy to be wrong!

I thought the GSD had it! He was gorgeous! (Also, GSD’s are what I grew up with, so I’m a little biased). But I love an underdog story, so I’m happy for Trumpet!

Congrats to Trumpet Your jowls and droopy eye remind me of my own mirror reflection. Good reminder that we are all beautiful.

Ah look at Trumpet breaking down barriers! First of his breed AND not some kind of “he’s been winning shows for a decade” riches to riches story!

    Who’s a good boy Trumpet?!!! You’re a good boy!

    Love it!

as a hound person, I’m ecstatic to see a scent hound get his due! I will say, the reaction of some people getting angry about this, including some wanker on twitter complaining that the competition was “rigged for money or ratings” confused the hell outta me

What a pill! How dare they rain on Trumpet’s parade. He is a beauty.

Congrats to all the good doggies.

    He is so adorable cute!!!

It seemed like a few of the dogs – notably the German Shepherd – looked like they were almost choking with the tight rein. And a couple of smaller dogs seemed like their front feet barely touched the ground.

And do they all have to do the final circuit at a dead run? After writing that, though, i guess it could be to make sure the dogs don’t have physical defects?

I’ve never watched dog shows so these are not criticisms. I just don’t know how they do things.

Anyone else thinking about the Christopher Guest movie, “Best in Show?” All I could think was, “Harlan Pepper’s revenge!”

Someday, one day, a Pembroke Corgi will win….I hope.

What a lovable pooch. Reminds me of James Thurber’s description of bloodhound breed. Also cartoons, The Bloodhound and the Bug.

Very rare for a bloodhound to win Best in Show. Congrats!
