Emily Blunt complained to Tom Cruise and he told her to stop being a p-sy

Emily Blunt was a guest on the SmartLess podcast in yesterday’s episode. Emily is friends with both Will Arnett and Jason Bateman so it was, as usual, an entertaining episode. But the huge pull quote coming from it is when Emily said that Tom Cruise called her a p*ssy. The story is that when they were making the big action film Edge of Tomorrow in 2014, they wore 80-pound compression suits. The first time Emily put on the suit on, it turned out to be more than she expected and she surprised herself by getting overwhelmed. What Emily told the SmartLess trio is that she got weepy in front of Tom and he didn’t know how to react. So after not saying anything for a minute, he finally told her, “don’t be a p*ssy.” Emily laughed it off and went on with the shoot.

Emily Blunt got a dose of tough love from co-star Tom Cruise during the production of their 2014 blockbuster film, Edge of Tomorrow.

During an appearance on the podcast Smartless, the British actress, 39, recalled being told by the iconic action star to “stop being such a p****.”

The grueling production of the science-fiction action film, which featured Blunt and Cruise tackling an alien species, called for the stars to wear “enormous” suits to make the scenes as realistic as possible.

“We had to wear these enormous suits, which I think would’ve been great if we had CGI’d them, but we wanted to do it in a tactile way,” Blunt explained to podcast hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes, the New York Post reported. “When you hear the word ‘tactile,’ you think that sounds nice and cozy. There was nothing cozy about these suits. It was like 85 pounds. It was so heavy. The first time I put it on I started to cry, and Cruise didn’t know what to do.”

Blunt went on to say that she voiced her concern to Cruise about how she was going to manage to make it through production in an 85-pound suit that weighed her down.

“I was like, ‘Tom, I’m not sure how I’m going to get through this shoot,’ and just started to cry,” Blunt recalled. “I said, ‘I’m feeling a bit panicky about the whole shoot.’”

In response to her concerns, Cruise gave it to Blunt straight: “He just stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes, ‘Come on, stop being such a p****, OK?’”

Luckily, Blunt took the comment well and responded to Cruise by laughing it off.

I know I’m going to get creamed for this. I won’t deny that Tom deserves to be taken to task for all of his ills. But people really want to crucify him for this story and there is a little more to it. I listened to the podcast to hear Emily tell it again. Will introduced the subject of the movie because he loves it. Both he and Emily speak kindly of Tom and his work in the film. She then tells the story. If you are hearing it for the first time, yes, it would probably p*ss you off. But if you’ve heard it before, when Emily and Tom were promoting the film, there is a little more context. When she told it on the Graham Norton couch, with Tom next to her, she prefaced it by saying that Tom came to her when she was trying on the suit for the first time to make sure she was okay because he knew how daunting those things were. After asking her if she was okay, noting she wasn’t and asking again, really, how was she, only then could she no longer hold it in. It was then he called her a “wuss” to make her laugh, according to Emily. And she said “It worked,” that she was able to get through her anxiousness about the suit. I’m not going to tell you what to think. I’m just saying, that when you listen to the SmartLess podcast, it sounds to me like it presumes you already know the story. You can watch the original telling here at minute 15:00. I’ll let you decide.

Im good with it – seems like a cute story after all. You have to hear her tell the story

My husband loves that movie. It’s one of those where every time it is on, he has to stop and watch it. I think its okay.

As for this story…..it sounds like she laughed it off and his comment gave her the push she needed to get on with the shoot. I think it sounds rude and like an a-hole comment, but honestly, sometimes you do have to be there. Its the way she says he looked at her for a while, like he was trying to figure out the right thing to say to get her ready.

To my dismay, my husband loves to watch that movie as well. One guy on Twitter said the only reason he watches it is to watch TC die over and over again. Which I found hilarious.
It sounds like it was light hearted banter between them.

I love this movie and its one of Bill Paxton’s last movie and he has a great line about how battle is the great redeemer. SIP PAXTON

      I love that movie.

I heard her speak about this before and it is not meant as a slap to Tom Cruise.

Yeah, he is part of a cult but he has made some great movies.

My husband cannot resist that movie either. I can’t count how many times I’ve found him staring at the TV, only to find Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise on screen.

Also, this story made me like Tom Cruise more. He seems so robotic, and this gives him a some personality. I imagine he said it with a little smile. What can I say, the new Top Gun revived my girlhood crush on Maverick.

      • AMA1977 says:

Mine too! What is it with guys and this movie? Any time it’s on, he watches it, no matter what point they’re at or how recently he’s seen it. Just like with Tombstone. 😂

I, like many here, intently dislike Tom Cruise and have more than enough justifiable reasons already, but this is not one of them. Her telling of the story makes it clear that he was defusing her tension and anxiety with a deliberately off-color remark. She’s not insulted so I’m not going to be on her behalf.

He’s still a middle-tooth having, shoe-lifting, postpartum depression invalidating cult member, but I agree that this anecdote actually humanizes him.

    • YOKOOHNO says:

Haha well I’m with all your husbands on this because this is one of my favourite movies. I rewatch it pretty often. Funnily enough my husband likes it too but I’m the big fan.

Not a Cruise fan, and I’m fine with Emily Blunt, but WHAT A GREAT MOVIE. Edge of Tomorrow 4 evah LOL

I remember her telling this story during press for the movie way back when, and it was a silly, lighthearted moment that they both laughed about. Nothing for a tone to get upset about, but it’s Tom Cruise, so people are constantly lusting to bring out the fire and pitchforks.

  4. FancyPants says:

But there’s also *more* to the story: she goes on to say that her collarbones and ribs are “still dodgy” because of working in that suit and that she had to have a male stunt double for the suit instead of a female stunt double. It really was too heavy for her. If Tom Cruise wants to break his ankles on set, good for him, but everybody doesn’t want to destroy their body for a job.

  5. Sumodo says:

Good gracious! The $ci-lord had a human moment!

  6. girl_ninja says:

A lot of people speak kindly of Tom. That’s fine but a lot of people speak kindly of Brad Pitt too. They are all still horrible me. The Scientologist who were cleaning his house for free, or fixing his motorcycle for free or giving hours and hours of free labor probably don’t like him too much. I know I don’t.

    • lucy2 says:

Cruise (and Pitt) know how to put on a good public face, don’t they? Funny that both of the veneers have fallen in recent years and some of us see the real them.

      • Mustang Sally says:

Thank you – I thought I was losing my mind by all the comments upthread that think this was “cute.” It is not cute, “human” or funny – at all – its abusive. TC uses human (CO$) trafficked labor to satisfy his every whim and TC is revered in a church that is helping alleged criminals (see: D Masterson) get away with crime. Sorry, I don’t find this a cute, human moment for TC.

    • whatWHAT? says:

THIS. OVER and OVER and OVER again. (said the same below)

“but but but his movies are good!”

alrighty then. enjoy those movies, knowing that your $ is going to an evil cult that separates families, uses slave labor, and imprisons people.

I’ll give my money to people like Keanu Reeves and Dolly Parton.

      • Pulplove says:

I’m also at a loss here. One hit movie and being a $ientology leader isn’t that reprehensible anymore. This is how many bad people get away, just give the masses something they like and they’ll find enough excuses to look the other way.

    • Mtl.ex.pat says:

This all day long. Tom Cruise is and always will be a dangerous cult leader.

  7. whatWHAT? says:

I’ll be honest. I have a hard time thinking fondly of ANYONE who thinks Tom Cruise is a “nice guy”.

as it is said, a person who is nice to you but rude to the waiter is NOT a nice person. Tom Cruise may be THE NICEST PERSON EVER to his costars, but he is an EVIL B*STARD to his “underlings” at Co$. and to the slave labor he uses for all of his domestic projects. and to Katie Holmes…remember how she had to use a burner phone to escape? seriously, F this guy. FOREVER.

(or until he leaves the cult.)

  8. Abby's Mom says:

They were adorable together on Graham Norton when they were promoting this film.

  9. Tara says:

I have no opinion about this particular exchange. I just wanted to share that I think Tom actually looks handsome in these photos. And that is shocking to me. Lol

  10. Katie says:

This is 100% the attitude of a $cientologist. I don’t really think they know how to be any other way.

  11. Nicegirl says:

    Love 💕 Emily Blunt ♾️

  12. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I have to admit, I enjoyed this movie watching Cruise die over and over.

  13. Jen says:

If it made her laugh and broke the tension, that’s great, but I absolutely hate the p**** word. I get it that it’s largely about me and my personal experience with the word though.
