The ‘Scream 6’ trailer is out: will you watch a Neve Campbell-less ‘Scream’?

Last year, Neve Campbell was in talks to come back yet again to the rebooted Scream franchise. She joined David Arquette and Courteney Cox in the fifth film, which was billed as the big reboot post-Wes Craven (who passed away in 2015). Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega were introduced as the Final Girl sisters who sought help from the original Scream survivors (Gale, Sidney and Dewey). The plot was kind of nonsensical but I enjoyed seeing what a new, fresh team did with the story and the characters. They definitely left the door open for Neve and Courtney to come back to franchise for the sixth film. The problem? Producers didn’t want to pay Neve what she was worth for being the face of this franchise. So Neve stepped away from the negotiations, because she found the producers’ offer to be insulting. Crash-cut to this week, and we have the first trailer for Scream 6, and the first Neve-less Scream movie:

They pulled in Dermot Mulroney?? Dang. And Hayden Panettiere has also come back to the franchise, interesting. I wonder what the story/script was when they thought Sidney/Neve would come back. I bet they gave Courteney/Gale more to do once Neve exited the negotiations. Anyway, I have to admit, I’m curious what happens when the Scream universe comes to New York. Bodega slasher!

Possible spoilers… there’s a theory floating around that Neve Campbell is part of this film but they’re just keeping it very quiet until a reveal in the third act. I don’t know… I think that would be an awful thing to do to the Sidney Prescott character, right??

Coming off of “Wednesday,” Jenna Ortega is going to be the big draw in this movie regardless.

    • Normades says:

Yup this is a very lucky and unexpected boon for the movie. Kids will absolutely go see it for Jenna, and that is proof folks that movie stars still exist.

  2. HeyKay says:

I saw the first Scream, that was enough.
If Courtney Cox, with all her Friends money still coming in, is doing sequels, why not Neve?
Scream 6? Rocky 20? The endless MI sequels w/ Cruise?
No thanks, most sequels are not good.

  3. Elizabeth says:

I live in New York, and the scenes on the subway and in the bodega were just a little too much for me.

  4. Twin Falls says:

You can’t have a legitimate Scream movie without Sidney Prescott.

I concur. I have seen all the Scream movies- multiple times. 4 always slips from my memory somehow and i never remember who the killer is.

But without Sydney Prescott- why bother.
And the fact that they refused to pay her appropriately- (something, let’s face it, they would not have done to a man in her position)- makes me not want to support this film. I don’t want to give them any of my money.

  5. TIFFANY says:

    No.

I might catch it if it hits streaming or cable.

  6. Chantal says:

Yes. Although I generally can’t stand most reboots, I’m curious to see what they do with this one and also this/these Ghostface(s?) seems scarier to me. I’ll miss Neve though. And why did Hollywood cheapen out with her?

    • Aevajohnson says:

I feel the same. I’d rather she was in it, and I considered not watching it when I first heard, especially due to her absence being about proper compensation. But I like what the directors did with 5, and I like the current core cast even without Neve. Plus, this is one of the only horror franchises my husband also likes- so we’ll probably have a date night and go see it.

  7. Jais says:

So that type of reveal would be shitty. Seems like it’s just a theory though.

  8. Case says:

I’m a big Scream fan and I’m super excited for this! It looks a bit darker/scarier than the typical Scream movie, but I’m okay with them switching it up a bit as long as it keeps some of its signature humor and self-awareness.

I’m sad about what happened with Neve and I love Sidney but I felt like they adequately passed the torch in Scream 5. Re: that theory on Sidney, Neve is very protective of the character and wouldn’t let that happen IMO.

    • Princess Caroline says:

I loved Scream 5… was so happy that it was so well done. I’ll miss Neve but think they did a great job passing the torch and I love the new cast

I think I only watched the first 2, but it’s pretty shitty of the producers or whoever to not pay the star of the franchise what she deserves. These are relatively low budget films (the 2 highest were $40 mil) that have raked in $740 million. I can’t imagine what she asked for that they couldn’t afford.

  10. Ameerah M says:

It’s more awful to not pay her and leave her out altogether. So hopefully they paid my girl and she will be a nice surprise for Scream fans. I personally haven’t been interested in this franchise since Scream 2. But Neve is the face of it and she deserved to be paid.

  11. Ck3 says:

Yep. I’ve wanted to watch a Neve-campbell less scream since Scream 4. My one regret from 5 is that they didn’t write her off. I love the character, but my goodness, the well was running dry when it came to writing her in these films. It started to go down hill in 3 w/ the whole secret Hollywood brother plot, hit the bottom w/ the jealous relative plot in 4, and frankly, was nothing more than a glorified side role in 5. Horror movie protagonist kind of break the franchise if they survive for more than 2 movies. You start to run out of people adjacent to them to kill, then you have to start killing off the friends of a younger relative. I’m glad she said no to the insulting offer. However, every scary movie franchise protagonist doesn’t need to be Laurie Strode. Heck, even Laurie Strode couldn’t make it past the 3 movies until the legacy sequels and that’s with 3 different timelines.

Neve deserves far better, but this movie actually looks like it might not be trash.
