Prince William ‘listened’ to homeless people for Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day

Prince William has four homes that we know of, between Adelaide Cottage, Anmer Hall, Kensington Palace and Tam-na-Ghar (in Scotland). Six months ago, he became the Duke of Cornwall, with access to the vast Duchy of Cornwall real estate empire. In recent months, William has made some very clear machinations behind-the-scenes to convince his father to evict Prince Andrew from Royal Lodge, so that William and his family can move into the mansion after millions worth of renovations. So… obviously, William thinks the best issue for him right now is to tackle homelessness. He’s done a podcast interview in honor of Red Nose Day, the fundraising day for Comic Relief. You can see the video here.

Prince William believes his late mother, Princess Diana, would be upset that more progress hasn’t been made to combat homelessness. The Prince of Wales, 40, was introduced to the plight of street sleepers and others without homes by Diana, who took him and his brother Prince Harry to shelters, and he is a longstanding campaigner on the issue.

In a new video, he says that Diana, who died at age 36 in 1997, would be frustrated that more progress hasn’t been achieved.

“My mother introduced me to the cause of homelessness from quite a young age, and I’m really glad she did,” Prince William said. “I think she would be disappointed that we are still no further on in terms of tackling homelessness and preventing it than when she was interested and involved in it.”

The video was made by Comic Relief and will air in full during a telethon this Friday. In a short clip released on Wednesday, William is seen visiting a charity called Groundswell, which Comic Relief is supporting, and recording a podcast as part of Groundswell’s Listen Up! Project.

The Prince of Wales says he is there “to learn” about the stories of two people, Nawshin and Miles, who have been helped by the charity.

“I’m here really kind of to learn a bit more from you both, to hear a bit more about your lived experiences of homelessness,” William tells them.

[From People]

While it’s important to listen to homeless people and learn about their journeys, it’s not like William is some activist with no resources to offer people other than his listening skills. While homelessness is a complicated issue and there are a lot of moving parts, it’s not like it’s this impossible, unsolveable issue – create more low-income housing, dedicate more public funds to tackle the root causes of homelessness, create an economy with a stronger social safety net. And don’t stand for some posh a–hole to patronizingly simper “I’m just hear to listen” before he goes back to one of his four homes.

  1. Tessa says:

He called his mother paranoid and wanted her interview censored. And here he is playing the diana card again. Diana would be disappointed in preachy William who does little for the homeless.

  2. Jillian says:

I don’t wish to advocate violence but how are these royals not stoned in the streets daily? William and Charles and their wives are all charmless snobs and they embarrass themselves any time they open their mouths

    • BeanieBean says:

They’re getting a metaphorical stoning via twitter now.

      • Seraphina says:

BeanieBean, what do I need to search to see? I would love a good laugh aimed at those who deserve it.

      • Feeshalori says:

Seraphina, tap on the BBC News Twitter link Kaiser supplied above, that’s how l accessed it. It’s worth it!

      • Jaded says:

@Seraphina — tap on the “945 replies” at the bottom of the photo. The responses are perfection!

      • Seraphina says:

Thank you for your help everyone! I appreciate it.

      • Seraphina says:

I had to come back and state that the comments are comedic GOLD. Especially of the clip where they have wills and kate laughing. Chef’s kiss.

  3. Tessa says:

He looks like his father when he makes that goofy expression

  4. equality says:

He is slamming himself and too dumb to see it. He says Di would be upset that more hasn’t been done and that she introduced him to the issue at a young age. He is 40 and what has he accomplished on this issue? All he has done is put out statements, sleep rough once and sell papers one day.

    • Brassy Rebel says:

And at 40, he apparently still doesn’t understand the issue since he’s still in the “listening and learning” phase.

The comments to that tweet tell us that a lot of Brits are over William and his hypocrisy. The sound you hear is the sound of the monarchy crumbling.

    • Lorelei says:

@Equality, exactly— and how is he (or his staff) too stupid to see that this is how it comes across to the general public?? For the love of god, DO SOMETHING already.

  5. ThatsNotOkay says:

Pegginton is so scarred by his “paranoid” mother exposing him to homeless people at a young age, he can’t help but collect home after home for fear his last home might not be enough to keep him from becoming homeless should his four other homes somehow disappear. And not just homes. PALACES AND CASTLES. Give us a break, Sir Pegs-alot.

  6. MSTJ says:

In my opinion, it’s clout chasing. He’s using his mother’s name to up his profile and gain support from people who loved and admired Princess Diana and still regard her as the best of royalty in the UK.

He has no plan of his own to address homelessness there so he’s running around claiming to listen while latching on to his mother’s name for currency.

    • BothSidesNow says:

Of course he is because he has nothing to offer. With Bullyiam thinking that he can up his clout of his non-actions he is truly delusional. The fact that he brings up this excuse of him “learning”, I wonder if the people of Britain will finally come to their senses that he is speaking in code. Bullyiam certainly doesn’t reflect the insurmountable awareness and action that his Mum possessed even at her young age. Another day and another stupid and useless PoW he is.

  7. girl_ninja says:

He is so disingenuous and performative. He invokes his mothers name because Harry shared about her in a heartfelt, genuine capacity. All Willy cares about is what he wants and what he can get.

    • BothSidesNow says:

And more importantly how long he has to wait to get what HE wants. Peggy doesn’t care about anyone but himself.

  8. PrincessOfWaffles says:

Always there to learn. Never there to lift a finger and actually do or share something for the cause.

    • BeanieBean says:

His mother introduced him to the situation at an early age, and yet, all these years later he’s done nothing & understands nothing & wants to know why something hasn’t been done? So it’s somebody else’s job to do something? Not his? The guy with four homes & counting, plus access to gazillions in funds?

  9. Ginger says:

Wow, they are really dragging him under that BBC tweet. William isn’t popular at all. I’m glad people are seeing him (and the RF) for what they are.

    • SarahCS says:

Very much so, I was expecting a few of the sycophantic ones in the bunch but nope, I scrolled a fair way and ALL negative.

      • BothSidesNow says:

They were exceptionally unkind towards Bullyiam and in one tweet, someone posted the details surrounding the Duchy money as well as the estimated billions of real estate that they own. I found it a very interesting read.

        https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/13/business/prince-william-1-billion-inheritance/index.html

      • Seraphina says:

Thank you for sharing that article @BothSidesNow. The more I read, the more incandescent with anger I became. The mere fact that royal wills are kept a secret is a huge problem. I cannot understand why that is not understood to those supporting this family. And don’t get me started on the Duchy subject.

    • Jenss says:

The more William reveals himself, the worse it will get, in my opinion. He is a deeply unimpressive individual with no accomplishments of his own, so is reduced to invoking his dead mother (yet again). He is way worse than Charles, and fundamentally unsuited to his role.

  10. Amy Bee says:

Apparently homelessness is going to be his next big project. Whatever. Right now he’s fighting his uncle through his father for Royal Lodge. What does he really know about being homeless?

  11. Rapunzel says:

This man baby is not good for or good at anything except being angry and hogging toys.

  12. Rapunzel says:

Oh and does anyone else see all of this “listening” and think of that Fraiser episode where he creates a song for his show and Martin has that “I’m listening” tune?

    What’s new?
    I’m listening
    Feeling blue?
    I’m listening
Feeling mad, feeling sad, feeling bad, feeling glad?
    I’m listening

I feel like this should be the Wailses theme.

  13. Becks1 says:

How has he spent decades “learning” about homelessness and still has done nothing concrete about it? Why isn’t he partnering directly with some of these already established organizations and giving them money, expanding programs, or whatever else is that they may need help with? He and Kate could host a fundraiser in support of Centrepoint or a similar charity and raise a lot of money in one night. Throw in a silent auction and they could raise even more money.

It’s just so frustrating to see someone who can help more than any of us can help and he’s just……not.

    • Brassy Rebel says:

The thing is he doesn’t even talk a good game. It’s just the same old same old: I’m here to listen.

    • Rapunzel says:

They are just lazy and not innovative and have the laziest, least innovative folks around them as help. It insulates them from reality and makes if impossible for them to effect reality.

    • Eurydice says:

He doesn’t even have to care about the issue – just do something for PR purposes. If he hosted a fundraiser people would be distracted from his numerous homes – and I’d bet all those stars who sent their regrets for the coronation would be happy to perform.

      • QuiteContrary says:

This is such an obvious and excellent idea. Or he could open up his homes for tours for a week to raise money. He just needs to do something, anything.

    • Pumpkin (Was Sofia) says:

It’s incredible how many good ideas people here give to W&K considering 1) most of us don’t have much experience in the charity/fundraising sphere at all whereas W&K (or their staff* at least) have access to those resources and 2) we’re doing it for free.

      * And yes I know most of KP is incompetent but as the saying goes “the fish rots from the head”

      • UnstrungPearl says:

They are absolutely aware of all the things they could do, the fact is they just don’t want to. They don’t want to donate, or ask others to donate, or give any kind of real help.
The excuse is it’s ‘too political’ but the reality is they are right wing tories, and they won’t do anything that’s even slightly critical of the government. They need poverty to exist because it reinforces their belief in a social hierarchy where they stay at the top.
Just a horrible bunch of sociopaths.

      • Eurydice says:

@UnstrungPearl – yes, that’s the thing. KP isn’t incompetent when organizing a Jubbly or a massive funeral. They know exactly what to do with all the pomp and bagpipers and bearskin hats and angelic boys’ choirs. This fork here, that spoon there, where everyone sits, where everyone stands. Everything’s managed with the precision of an atomic clock. When it’s important to them, they do it perfectly.

    • Cessily says:

They really need to retire the “I’m here to listen and I’m learning” line they keep putting out there. It is extremely patronizing and they should be embarrassed.

      • Feeshalori says:

They should be deeply embarrassed, you can certainly do something while you “learn.”

      • Jenss says:

When they say “I’m here to listen / learn”, they’re just acknowledging that they have absolutely nothing to contribute.

      • Becks1 says:

It’s so stupid and I don’t know why they cling to it. i don’t think the other royals use that line so much, right? Charles, Camilla, Anne etc. It’s just something that’s used to protect W&K.

      • Puppy1 says:

Obviously it’s time for hearing screening and cognitive testing for W&K.

  14. Lizzie says:

Funny, Harry and Meghan never show up empty handed saying they are just there to learn. Does anyone else remember the Cambridges/Wales saying their team was going to start organizing their visits to be impactful? Maybe I dreamt it because it sure hasn’t happened.

  15. MoBiMom says:

That first photo is a real keeper and fabulous addition to the already substantial colonialist cosplay series. Thanks Kaiser, you never disappoint with your choices!

  16. Harper says:

I love how Willy is being dragged for kicking Harry out of his own home in the UK in those comments.

  17. Pumpkin (Was Sofia) says:

Okay William your mother would be disappointed that more hasn’t been done but what have YOU done? What initiatives of Centrepoint and any other charity that deals with homelessness has he supported besides turning up to one event and going “homelessness bad we should do something” and then going back to one of his multi million pound homes and calling it a day?

  18. Noor says:

Remind me of his better half at a food bank … I am just learning, learning.

here we are again offering odd smiles , listening, just listening

  19. Jais says:

Ugh. I just can’t with him. It’d be nice if he came up with a real and productive way to help with homelessness. That’s all I got.

    • Unblinkered says:

A clip from this was featured on UK breakfast tv this morning and it really was too much to stomach, I immediately switched channels.
He was shockingly insincere: he’s got the gift of the gab but is clearly a lazy and patronising man.
He (along with KM) is on a high having acquired the Duchy of Cornwall’s assets and, along with that, total protection from the UK media.

  20. Nerd says:

I think part of Diana’s disappointment would be in the fact that she exposed both of her sons to the various issues in the world at a young age in hopes that they would have compassion to help others through initiatives and charities. Harry has not only developed an initiative in her honor with Sentebale (HIV/AIDS) at the age of 19, but he has also continued her fight with minefields with Halo Trust and the Diana Foundation, along with his own charities and initiatives. William on the other hand has contributed nothing in his 40 years of life except for a failed attempt a few years ago, which was only to best his brother. He has known about this issue since childhood and has what should be the most pull of anyone in the family with the public, but has accomplished nothing but manage to use his mothers name for attention but not progress. That is the real disappointment. He has more money, the highest title of the two sons and the ears of the media, public and government, yet he has accomplished zilch.

  21. I believe Diana would be so disappointed in the shitty human being you have become Peg. Listening and learning are not your thing. Anger, jealousy and discontent is all you want to know. Go home to one of your many houses and continue to do NOTHING.

  22. LB says:

Since 2005, William has been the patron of Centrepoint, an organization supporting homeless youth. That is almost 20 years. His mother took him there as a child. He slept out on the streets as a young man to better understand the issue. How is he still “learning”? How does he not understand the optics of being an incredibly wealthy man with four homes engaging in conversation to “highlight” the issue of homelessness. He appears to be incapable of understanding that he and his family must evolve and have a real impact on the issues they support. His mother did it. His brother & sister-in-law are doing it. Oh yes, but his mother was “paranoid” and his brother & sister-in-law are “bullies” & “traitors”.

  23. I hope the British public are finally awakened with the reality that they are being hoodwinked by their so-called tax-paid and “welfared” royal family. They are being scammed big time.

  24. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

    Whirled peas.

  25. Nanea says:

“Prince William has four homes that we know of”

We know of a fifth that is often overlooked because it’s far off the beaten path… in Wales of all places, near the Brecon Beacons National Park.

It’s called Llwynywermod, and it’s owned by the Duchy of Corwall.

So Royal Lodge would be # 6.

I’m disgusted by Bulliam’s hypocrisy, and his awful entitlement.

    Abolish the monarchy!

  26. jgerber says:

He listened to homeless people and then went to all 5 (6?) palaces to chuckle gratefully at how hard he’s worked to be a multiple-home owner. It’s good to be Willy.

  27. Mslove says:

I agree, it is extremely patronizing. Pegs could never actually help homeless people. Let’s not forget the homeless are probably descended from working-class people and we know how he feels about that. Even tho they are supporting his lavish lifestyle.

  28. Laura D says:

Give it a rest William! No-one believes you any more. If your mother had still been alive she would have been doing everything in her power to highlight the Homelessness and would have been embarrassing the government to do something about it. She definitely wouldn’t be going to the papers trying to lobby support for a sixth new home.

You’re a Tory stooge William who does what they want when it suits you. How about helping out your good friend Sir David Attenborough by demanding the BBC show the “missing” Wildlife episode on the network instead of iPlayer? You managed to get the BBC to silence your mother. You also bullied the BBC into changing one of their documentaries so that a simple truth about you wouldn’t be aired. So, how come there’s radio silence from you when an important environmental issue has been relegated to iPlayer?

It’s all photo-ops and “learning and listening” from you and your lazy wife. You’ve just inherited all that property in Cornwall. How about giving rooms in a few of those while people are trying to find their feet, or even giving the rents of some of those properties to Shelter, CentrePoint ect.? Until I actually see/hear you do something concrete to help the homeless then I think this is just another one of your meaningless photo-ops.

    • Chrissy says:

Well said, Laura. He’s the biggest and cheapest hypocrite. Diana would be appalled by everything he’s become. Ugh!

  29. Anna says:

I read the headline too quickly and thought it said “Prince William listens to homeless for comic relief”
And thought, “wow thats low even for him.”

  30. RoyalBlue says:

Irony is lost on the bald one so he needs to sit out this one.

    • Chrissy says:

He needs to be called out and publicly shamed for is hypocrisy. I bet if H&M stated they were donating to a homeless charity or opening a soup kitchen somewhere today, this twit might have to do so too!

  31. Blue Nails Betty says:

Doesn’t William have a house in Cornwall and in Wales? Or am I imagining that?

  32. Bren says:

Deep criminal organizations rely on people being exploitable. Notice the left/right division causes a person to be blind to issues that the opposing side is trying to express? When it comes to homelessness and people-trafficking we all hold a piece of the puzzle to resolve these problems. If you identify as right please listen to the left and VISEVERSA. Thanks and be kind.

  33. jgerber says:

Why is that idiot pointing to his eye in the above picture? Moronic loser. He sees nothing that matters.

  34. sammi says:

All he and the others can do is tag on to other successful people and events .
eg. the Baftas..BBC’s David Attenborough’s Wild Isles (Chris Packham’s Springwatch has said it all before and Katie is buying Chris’s sister’s ‘wedding dresses as evening gowns’ to try and get in with Chris who has criticised the Royal Family’s history on land management and shooting of endangered species on their properties. William awarded himself the Bafta for Earthshit when Springwatch deserved to get it last year.) They have baked with Mary Berry and other people and what next? Nothing original now Harry has gone with Invictus and mental charity work so now homelessness is the big one . You have to Laugh!
