Naomi Judd defends Taylor Swift as “best role model for her generation”

The 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards - Show

When I first read this story – all about Naomi Judd coming to the defense of Taylor Swift – I was struck by a sudden odd feeling. It was like déjà vu, but different. I guess it was because I thought Naomi Judd had slammed Taylor Swift when Swifty won big at the CMAs. Turns out it wasn’t Naomi, it was Wynonna Judd. Is it wrong that I can’t tell them apart? Wynonna is the daughter, right? And Naomi is the mother. And Ashley Judd is Wynonna’s little sister.

Anyway, so it was Wynonna who slammed Swifty after the CMAs, saying that Swifty’s CMA sweep was “too much too soon… Time is God’s way of keeping everything from happening at once. It’s just too much of a good thing too soon.” Wynonna then had to eat sh-t, and she backtracked within a week: “My intent was not to take anything away from her talent and contributions to the country music industry, all of which are truly unprecedented for an artist of any age. Taylor is a beautiful, hard-working young woman that deserves the success she has had and I support her as an artist and as a woman in the business.” Now it looks like Wynonna’s mom loves some Swifty too! Naomi took up The Swifty Cause, defending Taylor’s wack Grammy performance, which was blamed – by Swifty’s record label, no less – on “technical issues.” Naomi didn’t get that memo, and she blamed the debacle on Swifty’s “stress and anxiety”. Hmm…

Don’t let Naomi Judd catch you saying anything bad about Taylor Swift. The veteran country singer has jumped to Swift’s defense after she was heavily criticized for her performance at the Grammy Awards last month.

In a letter to the editor of The Tennessean, Judd, calls Swift a “dazzling performer” and lauds her for single-handedly introducing “country music to a much-welcomed younger demographic.”

She attributes Swift’s less-than-perfect Grammy duet with Stevie Nicks to having an off night. “Having sung many times at the Grammys, I can tell you that the stress and anxiety of performing in front of the world’s top artists in every genre of music is tortuous for even the most seasoned singer,” Judd writes.

The backlash against Swift began immediately after her Grammy night performance, which the New York Times called “painfully out of tune.”

Swift’s label head, Scott Borchetta, rushed to her defense last week, calling her “the voice of a generation” and blaming a technical problem as the culprit behind the pitchy performance.

Judd also praises Swift’s “smarts, manners and class” as qualities young people should admire and emulate.

“If there’s an award for being the best role model for her generation,” she writes, “I’d like to be the one to give it to Taylor Swift.”

[From People]

Now, here’s the thing: I like Taylor Swift. I think she’s a good girl. I think she’s a much better role model for young girls than say, Miley Cyrus. Or Taylor Momsen. Or pretty much anyone out there in Young Hollywood right now. And I hate how everyone jumps on Swifty’s ass every time something good happens, like when she wins an award or something. It’s like the new trend – “Hating on Swifty When She Should Be Enjoying Her Moment”. All that being said, I do have to minorly hate on Swifty for just a second: she’s not “the best role model for her generation”. If you set her up like that, not only will she fail, but you’ll hate her for failing. Just let her do her music and enjoy her life and be the relatively classy (excepting John Mayer) young woman she already is.

So glad you threw in the John Mayer exception, because no role model in my mind would be involved with the Mayer. It’s just not done.

  2. Beth says:

I think the hate against Taylor is more about why is she so big and winning these awards. I like her music but it definately wasn’t AOTY. I’ve seen her live in concert and many of her tv performances and she’s not that good of a singer.

  3. bella says:

    @ Beth,
I’m going to risk the ire of others and say I think she’s getting some sympathy wins due to the Kanye debacle.

  4. bella says:

Now Shania Twain and Martina McBride, they sound exactly the same in concert as they do on their albums, and girlfriends are NOT lipsynching. THEY are amazingly talented women, and deserve every award they’ve gotten (and probably some they haven’t).

  5. bite me says:

taylor will be mia in les than 3 years… she sounds worse than Rhianna live

  6. Peach says:

    I don’t like her.
Because I think she plays too much on the Madonna/Whore complex that is already a pain in the ass for women to deal with. We don’t need another person heaping on the whole: Good girls get guys, Sexually active girls have ‘everything they’ve got taken’. Because it reduces women to a hymen. Which is…well…stupid.

I also am not a fan of the whole 20 years old acting like I’m 14 and singing about BOYS and PRINCESSES and FAIRYTALES.
Life isn’t like that. Adding to the Disney Schism is hardly new, revolutionary or relevant art.

That said, I’m fine with her as long as she stays off my iPod. Luckily, that’s easy enough to accomplish. So while personally I may find her sentimentalizing of women annoying and a little too twee, it’s just my personal taste. If other people want to enjoy her melodic musings on crying I couldn’t care less.

And come on, since when has winning a Grammy or VMA truly made an artist great? Answer: never. not once.

    What a crock!

After her daughter, Wynona, criticized Swifty and got the book thrown at her it only cemented the idea that anyone who keeps it real about Taylor will be demonized. Now everyone is falling over backwards to kiss this teen girl’s behind. Why? Because by defending her you’ll get some positive press.

    Ugh. So very transparent..

  8. irishserra says:

@bella: I totally agree with you. She might be writing lyrics that tweens/teens identify with, but her talent does not lie in her voice.

Naomi’s comment about welcoming the fresh new demographic is kind of sad because young kids are not listening to the real country artists. Taylor Swift is pop and that’s that. She’s an entertainer, not a singer.

  9. Sumodo1 says:

Reba didn’t whore around. She was a fresh, young face and today, she’s the very model of mature, well-rounded success. I wish the same for Swifty. If her managers are smart, they’ll keep the John Mayers away, and stop her from becoming overexposed. If there’s one sin Taylor Swift IS committing, it’s her willingness to go everwhere to be seen. She needs to go into hiding after Valentine’s Day comes out, and emerge around Memorial Day. Less is more, Swifty!

  10. mockey says:

I don’t care if she is a good or a bad role model. What I want is a good artist, who sound good.
when will we stop with ” the entertainers have to be role model”… entertainers have to be good at what they are supposed to do, and in this case it’s singing. And sorry if Taylor can’t do that, then she can go back home.

  11. daisy says:

She is actually talented. She absolutely does not play the madonna/whore.That is one of the dumbest things I have ever heard.(anyone remember Britney?)I don’t think John Mayer is a good choice, but hey…live and let live.

  12. ligeia says:

i wish she’d sing about something other than boys, crying about boys, being obsessed with boys and well…boys….yawn. i find her to be rather bland and boring.

daisy, shes playing the madonna not the whore so i think peach was spot on with that comment….brithey was playing the other end of the spectrum.

  13. Peach says:

    @Daisy:
Who said Britney didn’t? She did. She doesn’t anymore now that her cover is blown, but absolutely she played to it.
But just because Britney did doesn’t negate Taylor Swift from doing it.
    Case in point:
Go youtube ‘You Belong to Me’. I saw it and wanted to burn my computer afterward. But open a new browser window and play it.

Is it playing? Good. Let’s summarize:
Good girl wears glasses that obscure her prettiness. Also wears T-shirts while the DRAMA-filled girlfriend wears “short skirts”. Because we all know girls who wear short skirts = DRAMA.
So Taylor dances and tries out different looks in the mirror. For some reason I feel we are supposed to pity her here, although I’m not sure why.

Bad Girl pulls up in hot red convertible. Her hair is brown and brushed(DRAMA). She immediately kisses this poor victim of a boy. Poor boy! Who is clearly never blamed for taking interest in such a loose woman to begin with. Also she’s cheer captain. And we all know cheerleaders = sluts. Meanwhile poor Taylor’s prettiness his obscured by the thinnest of wire-frame glasses and a marching suit. Ugh. Not fair!

    Cut to new scene-
Enter Taylor! In virginal white dress sans glasses. Oh my god suddenly she’s obviously beautiful. And all she had to do was get contacts and do her hair. Amazing. Every geek should be so lucky. Meanwhile Ms. Trampy McTramperson is in a low cut, whorish red dress causing the DRAMA. She tries to use her boobs to keep the guy, but no! Taylor is clearly hot now and therefore kissable. They embrace! All is well. The good girl wins over the tramp!

Now let me give you a quick reference as to what the Madonna/Whore is:
It is a deep dichotomy in modern culture used to oppress woman via sexual double standard, establishing rigid categories for female sexual behavior while permitting male behavior to range from abstinence to promiscuity without similarly disparaging social judgment.

Taylor’s Video is almost a perfect study in Madonna/Whore. I’m not sure it actually gets more accurate. We have the virginal geek, the DRAMATIC slut, the boy who is never disparaged and the subsequent bashing of the ‘sexualized’ female character.

Um…explain to me how this is not Madonna/Whore?

  14. Oi says:

Why do guys not agonize over images like this? you never ever see guys having this same type of discussion over say the Jonas brothers vs. John Mayer.
I think this whole thing has gotten more attention than it deserves which makes it seem worse than it is. The labeling and discussion is in and of itself the very type of thing feminism set out to stop. Let’s relax a little here ladies. I think this is a bit extreme.

Taylor is hardly the only message girls are getting. Look at it from the tweener’s perspective. the adults are the ones getting their panties in a knot.

  15. Lucy says:

She’s overrated, unable to sing, mediocre as sogwriter (Alicia Keys at er age was already flawless in everything) and she is everyone’s sweetheart out of a PR stunt. She’s creepily anorexic, and no one mentions it.
She’s not bright either, since she is “secretely” hooking up with Famewhore Dbag King Supreme John STD Mayer.
    Her backlash is due.
She is completely undeserving the wide majority of her awards.
And her cut clean image is a fakery ready to be blown away, as well.

  16. hmm says:

That’s enough Naomi Judd!! I am so sick of people acting like little Tay Tay is exempt from criticism because big bad Kanye stole her moment. Ugh! She was not performing at a local talent show, she was at the Grammys and was on her way to winning album of the year and had already won female vocalist of the year at one of the country music awards. Therefore, she should be able to sing live and to do it well. She may be the sweetest person this side of Nashville but that has nothing to do with her ability as a singer.

  17. flutters says:

I definitely congratulate Taylor for not going all Britney/Lindsey/Paris/Jessica on us but she’s hardly the only young star out there who’s a great role model. And being honest I think it’s weird for her to be stuck on these fairytale ideas of romance at her age. Her songs seem very male dependent. Like take Love Story, where she’s waiting and waiting for Romeo to “save” her and it’s only OK because Daddy says yes in the end. I like seeing women who are edgier and more empowered (which I don’t equate with oversexualiziation for the record).

  18. mei says:

I like Taylor Swift, but I’m getting sick of her music. It is always about the same old thing. And she does need to work on her vocal skills.

  19. She seems like a really nice girl, yeah. I dread that day that John does another TMI interview and mention what it was like to do her.

  20. Ash says:

She can’t sing. Simple as that. Props to her for writing her songs but the girl just can’t sing.

  21. Cat says:

@ Peach- I totally agree!!! Talk about playing into H’wood stereotypes!!!

I remember back in high school one of the sluttiest girls in school was skinny and wore glasses. Clothes do not make a woman a slut/virgin!

Plus it bugs me to no end how Taylor sets up unrealistic expections for young girls. I’m sorry but hs boys are idiots and will not dump a hot, popular girl for a dork (unless she magically gets a makeover and becomes a different person like Taylor did in the mv). If TS wants to be a role model, how about singing about accepting yourself the way you are, and not pining after a guy? You shouldn’t change and make yourself over into someone else’s ideal person. Winning a boy’s heart should not be the point of a girl’s existance. But maybe TS hasn’t learned that yet herself.

  22. San says:

After her involvement with John Douche bag Mayer I seriously question her as a role model. Let Mayer tell it he sure had his way with her. What a horrible man for a young girl to spend 1 minute alone with. Females should be taught to stay away from db’s like Mayer.
She lost me as a fan.

  23. For Sooth? says:

Naomi shouldn’t be so quick to speak. Taylor may just make a liar out of her yet. She is in her infancy stage as far as her career goes. And the further she roams from mom and dad the higher the ratio of naughty enticements. Time will be the witness, and apparently so will John Mayer. Snap!

  24. Wendy says:

Peach, something about that video has always bothered me and you’ve just expressed it perfectly! Best comment(s) ever!

  25. maggie says:

if any of ya’ll say something bad about naomi judd my hero i will get so mad naomi judd is awesome she is beast!!!!!!!

  26. It’s unbelievable that the CMA ignored Miss Swift. She’s so cool!
