Tina Fey is promoting season two of The Four Seasons on Netflix. It co-stars Colman Domingo and Will Forte and is about a group of married friends who go on vacation together. It’s loosely based on the 1981 movie with Alan Alda, Carol Burnett and Rita Moreno. Fey co-stars and she co-wrote and developed the series with her 30 Rock co-collaborators Lang Fisher and Tracey Wigfield. In a new interview with Today, Tina said they all drew inspiration from their lives while trying to maintain deniability to their husbands. She also made some very good points about aging and how it changes our perspectives and bodies.
The show, now in its second season, pays tribute to the ’80s film with plenty of Easter eggs, including a two-episode cameo from Alda in Season 1 and the resurrection of one of Burnett’s most memorable lines.
“I hate to break it to you, but you’re married to a middle-aged woman with dry skin,” Fey’s character, Kate, exasperatedly utters to hubby Jack (Forte).
Aging, like relationships, is front and center in “The Four Seasons,” with each of the main characters facing their own reckoning with mortality.
Fey says many of the references and moments woven into the plot of are, in fact, based on the real-life experiences of the series’ writers.
“We’re all pretty much the same age,” Fey says of the creative team.
“Almost all of us have known each other a super long time, and so all the writers are really good about sharing their own things,” she adds. “Then sometimes our spouses are like, ‘Is that me?’ And then we’ll usually just be like, ‘No, no.’ We’ll just lie and say, ‘That’s so and so.’”
White lies aside, Fey says that the writers are “generous” about sharing their personal anecdotes. Much like the characters in “The Four Seasons,” she and her cohorts have essentially been schooled by life.
“The peaks and valleys have really flattened out,” Fey says. “I’m just like, ‘OK. That happened? OK. We won a prize? OK. There was a fire? OK.’ Like you just … flat,” she says.
She agrees that, like most things, it’s hard to truly understand what it means to age until it happens to you.
“I feel like it’s a reverse puberty in a way. It’s like your body starts to change and be disgusting in new ways,” she says with a laugh. “When you’re 12 or 13, you’re like, ‘Why am I so oily?’ And now you’re like, ‘Why am I so papery?’”
It’s so true that everything feels flat now! I don’t know if I’m depressed from lack of hormones or if it’s just the way that time smooths out the peaks and valleys, like taking a zoomed out look at a line graph. Also the physiological changes she mentions are depressingly relatable. My skin doesn’t feel like my own anymore because it’s so dry. I’ve been drinking more water and trying to stay hydrated and that helps somewhat. Of course she’s downplaying all of this by only mentioning one of the many baffling things our bodies are doing. Why are my inner ears itching?
Right now The Four Seasons is the number three TV series on Netflix. I’m currently watching the series sitting at number four, The Buroughs, but I’ll give this a chance when I’m done. Tina is optimistic in this interview about whether the show will get a third season, saying it’s a “good sign” and “We’re certainly all up for it.”

Girl, I’m 51 and my nails have just started splitting. Help!
This show is great. My husband and I are now saying to each other, ‘are we freeballing?’ on the regular.
Colman Domingo is a national treasure. “Too far upstate!”
I’ve found that making sure I lotion my nails along with my hands every night helps. And a little olive oil or facial moisturizer helps with the ear itchies. Hyaluronic acid is my new BFF – Good Molecules HA for my face (although I use a lot of other skin care from that line, too) and Olay with HA for my body wash. Oh, I also use a sugar scrub in the shower a couple of times a week to help get rid of some of the dry skin. Peri sisters unite! I haven’t watched any of The Four Seasons yet, so that’s all I have to add!
Thank you!
“It’s so true that everything feels flat now!”
It does ring true and the state of the world doesn’t help.
A solid night’s sleep seems a foreign concept. Indulging in 100% cotton or linen pajamas has helped.
We should have orientation for this stage of life no joke!
Thanks for covering this show, I’ll check it out.
The inner ear itch is definitely a menopause issue. It drives me nuts. HRT definitely helped, but once I stopped it, the itching came back.
I traded pimples putting on weight and my skin texture isn’t what it used to be. Not to mention the dark spots on my face from being a desert and beach dweller.
Fey’s book Bossy Pants is the funniest memoir I’ve ever read. Amazingly talented comedian.
Four seasons is really good – the first season is stronger than the second but the writing, chemistry, and casting for both is *chefs kiss*
HRT is a godsend. CeraVe products are awesome. Salicylic acid has done wonders for stubborn acne, hyaluronic acid is a godsend for skin hydration, and niacinamide helps inflammation and hyperpigmentation.
Thanks for this, TN Democrat! I can handle the developing wrinkles, but the hyperpigmentation is infuriating.
THANK YOU my inner ears are SO ITCHY
