This week, Princess Eugenie announced her newborn daughter’s name: Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank. All of us expected Eugenie to use “Elizabeth” as a middle name for her daughter, and I pointed out that Princess Beatrice had done the same for both of her daughters, Sienna Elizabeth and Athena Elizabeth Rose. Tatler also picked up on the fact that Beatrice and Eugenie both used Elizabeth for their daughters’ middle names. Tatler put together a list of Queen Elizabeth II’s descendants who carry her name, and Tatler even included Princess Lilibet. Check this out:

You know what’s funny? Eugenie is the only one of QEII’s granddaughters to not carry her grandmother’s name. Her full name is Princess Eugenie Victoria Helena. What also strikes me is the lack of imagination – Elizabeth has so many variations, and Prince Harry was the only one who embraced a variation for his daughter. You would think someone else would have thought to name their kid Liz or Eliza or Beth or Birdie or Libby or Ella or Izzy or Liza. It’s also interesting that Harry was the only one to use an Elizabeth variation for the first name – all of the other name usages are for middle names only.

Anne was probably named after her grandmother rather than her mother even though they have the same name. The media freakout about Harry naming his daughter Lilibet was always ridiculous but it looks even moreso now when you see that most of grandchildren and great grandchildren have the Queen’s name.

Elizabeth (and Mary) are the most common middle names for white women, in general, so the hoopla about Lili’s name was always nonsense.
For real! They’re beautiful, classic names that aren’t dated — in fact, I’d wager that Elizabeth and Mary (or variations of them) are pretty common among Black and Latina women as well. My grandmothers were Mary Elizabeth and Elizabeth Mary…and I WISH I had a dollar for every cousin, friend, or daughter of a friend with those names.
Going straight for Elizabeth as a first name after QEII is pretty bold. (Especially when you have a bunch of cousins all with the same “claim” to it.) Lilibet is a perfect compromise, but I understand why the rest didn’t do even want to touch it.
Same thing happened with Queen Victoria’s descendents over the first few generations. Almost all the girls had Victoria in their name.
Queen Victoria actually demanded that her children name their first daughter Victoria and first sons Albert. Their are letters in the BRFs collection from Queen Mary fighting for the right to choose different names for her first kids.
Queen Victoria seemed like a controlling nutjob. I enjoy reading about her lifelong Commitment to the Bit, but I imagine it was utterly exhausting being her children and their spouses.

This is totally normal, especially with a beloved grandmother with a fairly common name. There are probably more than girls with Grace as a middle name among my cousins.
I am glad some also included Mary as a middle name, presumably after Queen Mary.
I assume this is how earlier generations of regular people ended up with a million johns and Jameses
It really does it make it clear that all the hoopla around Lili’s full name being Lilibet was racially motivated. No one cared about Elizabeth’s female descendants using her name until the mix raced Princess was born. When Lili was born the headlines were screaming how Harry and Meghan stole from the Queen and her name was “all she had” and fake controversy around if they got Elizabeth’s permission or not.
As always time proves the firm, the left behind royals and the media constantly lie about the Sussexes.
Birdie? BIRDIE? An unknown name in the U.K. and about as likely as calling her Tweety.
I always found the pearl clutching around Lili’s name to be particularly asinine. “She was named after her grandmother, oh no” Please. I and my 15 female cousins on that side all FirstName Marie after my grandmother. Someone once suggested a FirstName Anne and the family looked perplexed. “Who’s Anne?”
This is exactly why they had a fit when Harry used Lilibet! They ALL (esp Baldiloc) wished they had thought of it! We now have Lilibet The one & Only !
Absolutely! It was brilliant the way Harry and Meghan honoured Elizabeth, gave Lili her own name, and left no one in doubt about her heritage all in one go. I think that’s what makes makes it something the derringers can’t bear.
I have the impression from somewhere that Harry liked the name Lili because at an event in which he was attending, he asked a mother with a daughter with that name how she spelled it. Harry and Meghan have given Lili her great-grandma’s first name as her first as well. So creative! They could have named her Lili Elizabeth Diana, which has a lovely flow to it. I think Beatrice’s choice of first names makes them a lovely combination with Elizabeth as well.
Also, by naming her Liibet Diana, Harry’s beloved mother’s name is given more prominence than having Elizabeth as a middle name. And which middle name would come first, Elizabeth or Diana? You just know if Diana’s name came before Elizabeth’s, Great Britain might start another war with the U.S.
