Ethan Hawke truly has a gorgeous mane. I never would have thought that his hair would hold up so well at his age. It doesn’t look like he’s been making any trips to Turkey either – some guys are just lucky enough to keep a full head of hair. Anyway, these are photos of Ethan at the Berlin Film Festival this week, where he premiered Richard Linklater’s Blue Moon. While he was in Berlin, he was asked about some comments his daughter Maya Hawke recently made about her generation of actors. Basically, Maya revealed (as many other young actors have revealed) that producers are often hiring younger actors based on their Instagram follower count. As in, if someone doesn’t have at least a million followers, they’re not getting cast in whatever movie or TV show. Well, Ethan had a lot to say about that.
Ethan Hawke is weighing in on his daughter Maya’s comments about certain producers wanting to cast actors based on the amount of Instagram followers they have. In an interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast last week, Maya Hawke revealed that she knows several “smart directors” who have been told by producers that they must cast actors with a certain amount of Instagram followers in order for a project to move forward. “I don’t care about Instagram. Instagram sucks,” she said. “Right, well just so you know, if you have over this many followers you can get the movie funded. It’s a really confusing line to walk.”
When asked by press at Berlin Film Festival about his daughter’s remarks, Ethan Hawke said he’s encountered this phenomenon as well and it’s “crazy.”
“I really feel for these people. It’s really hard,” he said. “Sometimes I’ll be setting a movie up and someone will say, ‘Oh, you should cast Suzie.’ I’m like, ‘Who is she?’ ‘She has 10 million followers.’ I’m like, ‘OK cool, has she acted before?’ ‘No, but…’ And you’re like, ‘Wow, so this is going to help me get the movie made? This is crazy.’”
Hawke continued, “So if I don’t have this public-facing [platform], I don’t have a career? And if I get more followers I might get that part? What?”
The Oscar-nominated actor, who is premiering “Blue Moon” — his latest collaboration with Richard Linklater — at the fest, went on to say that he meets “so many young actors that think being an actor is protein shakes and going to the gym.”
“I wish they could meet Phil Hoffman like I did when I was 18, because it’s a much more substantive and enjoyable life,” Hawke said. “I mean, go to the gym if you want to, but that doesn’t make you — Robert De Niro is not great because he has a six-pack. If the part calls for it, he’ll do it, and that’s awesome. But he’s so much more than that.”
I feel like Ethan name-checks the late, great Philip Seymour Hoffman in every interview he’s done for years. It’s always a gut-punch – Ethan loved and admired Hoffman, and Ethan must think about his friend Phil every single day. It’s a reminder that we really lost the most talented actor of his generation when Hoffman passed in 2014. Anyway, as for what Ethan is saying… yeah, that’s how we get TikTokers and influencers in movies and TV shows. No one is going to acting school anymore, I guess. Why do that when there are so many other avenues to “get famous.”

Ethan Hawke is an incredibly talented actor, both on screen and on stage but it’s pretty rich to hear him complain on behalf of his NEPO BABY DAUGHTER that there is another way to get cast in movies other than merit, eg via social media? Eyeroll dot gif
Just shut up Ethan and don’t ruin your work for me
also, Saint Laurent is killing it this year – first Andie McDowell in the peasant dress on Jimmy Fallon, now Michelle Pfieffer rocking menswear? Yes plz
“Nepo baby” is a valid criticism when the person does not have the talents/skills to do the job they have been given. This does not apply to Maya Hawke. Brooklyn Beckham maybe, but not Maya Hawke. Or should Michael Douglas, Miley Cyrus, Liza Minelli, Isabella Rossellini (I could go on and on) not have had careers because they are nepo babies?
That part👍 That’s why I’ve NEVA had an issue with Nepo Babies… because nepotism only gets you in the door…talent/charisma gets you a viable career
Agreed with you. Maya has acting talent, she’s a good actor (don’t know about singing, didn’t bother to check that out myself).
The daughters of reality series (Kardashian, Real Housewives of X, etc.) got hired to walk/present the highend Fashion Houses because they had huge followers on SM, not because they’re good models, started all these trends of checking possible employee’s SM following number before hiring. Then people start trying to be SM Influrencers to get rich & famous.
Not necessarily. Gracie Abrams is really talented but she’s still a nepo baby. All the connections and just the lifestyle growing up. Guitar lessons, hanging out on sets. These are things other folks don’t get. Talent isn’t natural born, it takes work and skills and people with money have an easier time with that.
Should all the Skarsgards quit too, since they’re second generation in the same career? Do want to require the doctor one to quit too, since their mother is a doctor and he followed in her footsteps?
Omg. That suit with the cheetah tie. I’m trying to remember what he said but whoa that is a look. Honestly, the arts are in rough shape. Most working actors and writers can barely afford to live and then there’s Zaslav and Bezos and yeah. I know the arts still get made by dedicated people who care but it’s still hard.
Phillip Seymour Hoffman was that rare, one-of-a-kind actor who brought so much humanity and depth to every role he played. I rarely cry at celeb death but I admittedly lost it when he passed.
I definitely get the criticism in the first comment re: nepo baby but I don’t think it really contradicts his larger point that talent should be the basis for an enduring acting career, not how many IG followers one has. I think Maya is quite gifted and has sustained a career because of that, even if her last name got her through the door. But maybe his point would have been more salient if he at least acknowledged that privilege.
I’ve heard a number of actors talk about that, studios only wanting people who have a big online presence. In marketing terms it makes sense, you get someone with a built in fan base who is going to advertise the project for free to millions of people, but from the artistic and talent angle, it’s depressing.
I get what Ethan is saying, but there’s a long history of some actors coasting on looks and that being enough to succeed sometimes. It’s nothing new.
Well even look at the golden age of Hollywood. Jimmy Stewart basically played Jimmy Stewart in most of his roles. John Wayne Was always John Wayne. There have always been actors. And always been Stars. It’s just that there were better writers. And the writers wrote for those stars.
Hollywood isn’t really known for its imagination, is it? This is nothing new. How many known actors have been miscast just because they’re a draw?
Speaking of miscast – I like Ethan Hawke, but he was miscast in Reservation Dogs. For me, he’s the only clunker in a great cast that had a very natural flow acting style. Ethan was so Big A actor in comparison that he stood out. Not good, but not his fault either – just a bad fit.
PS – Reservation Dogs is a brilliant series.
We’ll always have indie films!!
