Ever since Sophie Chandauka became the CEO of Sentebale, the charity began losing long-standing members from the Board of Trustees and from the executive leadership of the charity. That was happening even last year. Things came to a head in March of this year, when the majority of the Board of Trustees stepped down in protest of Chandauka. Sentebale’s royal patrons, Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso, also stepped down in solidarity with the trustees. What followed was bonkers: Chandauka made a series of wild accusations which did not stand up to any kind of scrutiny, and she began publicly attacking Prince Harry’s wife as well. During that same period of time, Chandauka appointed new trustees, including Iain Rawlinson, a long time “ally” of Prince William. Since Harry and Seeiso’s resignations from Sentebale – not to mention the Charity Commission’s investigation into Chandauka and her wild claims – it looks like Chandauka’s new trustees are not sticking around to see how all of this shakes out. Sentebale has lost yet another trustee:
He hankers after being the prince he once was, in the acute judgment of Tina Brown – author of a majestic biography about Princess Diana – who points out that ‘the good you can do as a royal is so much more potent’ than anything anyone can achieve in exile in California, even if blessed with an £11 million mansion with 13-and-a-half bathrooms. Perhaps nowhere is this more startingly evident than at Sentebale, the charity which Prince Harry, inspired by the memory of his mother, co-founded in 2006 with the goal of helping orphaned African children.
Engulfed by an appalling storm of accusation since its board of trustees resigned last month – swiftly followed by the Duke of Sussex and his co-founder, Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, who stepped down as its patrons – Sentebale now appears to be at the mercy of events beyond its control.
Only a fortnight ago, I disclosed that one of its new trustees, Dr Margaret Ikpoh, had resigned just three weeks after being appointed. They were certainly three dramatic weeks, during which Harry accused Sentebale’s chief executive, Dr Sophie Chandauka, of telling ‘blatant lies’. She hit back by accusing Harry of playing ‘the victim card’, declaring the Sussexes’ brand to be ‘toxic’ and reporting her concerns to the Charity Commission, which announced that it was initiating an investigation.
Now, I can disclose, another trustee has resigned. Nerissa Naidu, who, like Dr Ikpoh, was appointed on March 25, has stepped down, leaving just three trustees in place: Iain Rawlinson, Dr Bhakti Hansoti and Dr Chandauka herself. This leaves Sentebale in a precarious position as charities are advised to have a minimum of three trustees.
Naidu, a South African entrepreneur, declines to comment, but Sentebale acknowledges that it has been ‘a particularly difficult time to have joined the organisation’. It adds that Naidu has ‘chosen to step down out of respect for her other professional commitments’ and says that it has deeply appreciated ‘her tremendous support and insights in recent weeks and her interest in Sentebale over a long period of time’.
[From The Daily Mail’s Eden Confidential]
As much as I want to believe that these trustees are leaving because they get a good look at Chandauka, I think it’s more like “why bother with any of this when the charity is being investigated and there’s all this drama?” Pretty soon it’s just going to be Chanadauka and Rawlinson screaming “BUT PRINCE HARRY!” This was such an obvious and stupid move by Prince William, all because he was jealous of what Harry created in their mother’s memory. Also: what does the bathroom count in Montecito have to do with Sentebale again??

What a mess. Have they raised any money recently?
I think, the investigation stops all the money flow. Both going in and going out.
Oh wow. But didn’t someone say the investigation could go on for years. That sucks for the organization. What do u even need a board for if all funding is halted for years.
@Jais, they didn’t expect an investigation to be launched. I think, they didn’t even expect two Princes to resign from the charity. That is why she went to the publicity tour as a revenge. Will knows how much this charity means to him, they thought he would stay and try to change her mind or accept the new management.
The new trustees are also gonna be investigated by the Commission. I am not surprised that they are leaving. I think, only those with personal agenda there are gonna try to stick around.
The three trustees newly appointed in addition to Rawlinson all appear to have strong professional credentials; I was waiting for them to remove themselves for the sake of their reputations. At this point, they can still claim to have been misled about Sophie’s plans, or past financial actions – and maybe they were. She certainly snowed the original Sentebale board. Hansoti, the one of the three still remaining, is part of Johns Hopkins, and would be smart to be out of there too; sticking around after the other two left, also not a good look. Curious to see where that will leave Rawlinson, whose reputation certainly hasn’t been enhanced by this debacle. Perhaps he has a promise of a future position elsewhere (a private secretary, maybe?) as reward for his work here. Chandauka isn’t going to let go easily though…
Oh, just go already! Her departure is inevitable. It is clear she has been a horror for the organization and has driven off the board who erred in giving her control, and the patrons who brought in most of the money. They bounce back if she just leaves before the damage is permanent. Then the princes and the board can return, make a big push to raise fubds and get to work serving the kids that rely on the place.
The opening part to that snippet is bananas. These Royal biographers are insistent that they know what Harry feels better than he does himself, even after he has said explicitly numerous times something different. Has Tina Brown ever even met Harry? How was she know what he hankers for?
And I think that most clear-sighted people saw this being the result, when the CEO was on her grievance tour a month ago. Which is why I always said that neither Prince needed to speak more in the media than they already had. It’s a shame though that they will hold on like this just to ruin a charity that was doing so much good work.
I thinks it’s more indicative of what Brown hankers for. Harry back in the royal fold. Harry has said with his whole chest over and over that he is loving life in California.
“out of respect for her other professional commitments”
You’d be bonkers to stay on a board with such a toxic reputation from an unhinged Chair who thought she could engineer a takeover of a well-run charity without consequences.
Best for the CC to do is get rid of these three and to re-appoint the previous board. The problem is and remains Sophie, the toxic one.
Try again Rawlinson, try again Willie. That platinum standard of palace grey men continues to show it’s a rusty tin plate whom no one else would hire. So unqualified, so unprofessional, what a bunch of gossipy amateurs.
Is Willy’s mate Iain Rawlinson still “advising” Sophie or nah? If so he’s doing a bang up job so far.
Rawlinson ( William’s spy) will assume CEO from Sophie, she will be on board with 2 of her cronies and the Sentabale takeover is complete.
What a mess. At this point I don’t think that this charity will ever be viable again. I suspect that Harry and Seesio will have to start fresh. What a shame for the children that it was helping and all because of a jealous brother who only wants to destroy anything and everything that Harry has.
Harry and Seeiso need to start afresh and get rid of any KP spies for a start. Better controls too so only trusted lieutenants on the board from now on.
Point of note, she is not the CEO. She is Chairman of the Board of Trustees (i.e she is also a Trustee). The charity had a CEO (Richard Miller) who left last year (November/December timeframe) and he was replaced by an interim Executive Director in Johannesburg South Africa. Note of interest in this new structure, the charity operates and has offices in Lesotho and Botswana, not South Africa, with Country Managers in each of those two operational locations. Therefore the SA posting was an interesting staffing decision which I think was Sophie’s.
It seems to me that Sophie was planning to center her focus on other objectives in Johannesburg South Africa than the objectives of the HIV affected beneficiaries the charity was initially set up to serve. Her plan seemed to have imploded when the co-founding patrons also resigned and transparently issued a statement of their decision to resign. I strongly believe she expected to leverage the influence of their ‘stock’ (their names/titles) to execute her plan and she was angry when they (particularly Prince Harry because his ‘name/title’ is globally valuable) publicly distanced themselves from the charity.
That being said, it seems she has not executed her agenda without the support of Mr Rawlinson. It looks like with his help she has the backing of a network of influential British elites connected to the POW. The other figures are currently in the dark but it is clear to many looking on who the see the links, that Prince Harry’s archenemies is likely tacitly aware of the machinations and has endorsed them. The primary victims in all of Sophie’s and her backers’ actions are the Sentebale beneficiaries dealing with HIV and fighting every to live a decent life which is that is very, very sad 😞.
Greed, jealousy, lies – sins men commit that cause so much pain for others. I do hope the charity recovers, and then gets back in good standing and in the right hands for the sake of the children and young people with HIV who benefit from it.
Apart from Rawlinson can’t see who the financial backers of Sentebale now. Only the Duke of Westminster has the financial might to make a takeover of Sentebale and deliver it to Willie. Can’t see the photo ops of Sophie with him.
All her photo ops were with consultants she spent Sentebale money on so who are you suggesting are the British financial elites backing Sophie and Rawlinson? Willie himself with Duchy money?
@Blogger I did not suggest there were any “British financial elites backing Sophie and Rawlinson”. That is something you imagine I said. This is what I stated in my comment “It looks like with his help she has the backing of a network of influential British elites connected to the POW.”
However, regarding the topic of ‘financial backing’, according to reporting on this debacle, Sophie is relying on US and South African donors for financial backing for her objectives. She commissioned consultants to help her identify prospects and according to reporting on this, the consultants delivered a list of potential donors to approach for financial backing.
This narrative that people can only do good work if they’re royal is unhinged. Try as he may Richard Eden couldn’t pin this latest resignation on Harry.
I wouldn’t mind the bathroom count if they got it right there are 15 bathrooms last I heard and the property is valued in excess of £17 million pounds. They always want to insinuate the Sussexes are struggling
There were 18 or 19 bathrooms in original reports based on past listings of the house when the rota had just discovered that H+M had moved to Montecito, so the royal “experts” appear to have lowered the count in recent years. LOL.
@Windyriver. I believe the first new trustee who left is a physician in England. Nerissa Naidu is a finance person who has lived in South Africa, UK, & USA, and serves on corporate boards. The remaining new trustee (other than Rawlinson) sounds like a great match for Sentebale: AIDS, pediatrics, public health, Johns Hopkins physician. She could be the only hope for Sentebale continuing its mission.
Her specialty though is in emergency medicine, including her AIDS related activities, and she also does/has done a lot of work around COVID and the pandemic. Seem to recall that Dr. Ikpoh has some more direct day to day experience with healthcare around AIDS, and former trustee Prince Seeiso’s cousin Dr. Lerotholi certainly does, plus is local. I think Nerissa Naidu has credentials around justice and empowerment issues, the new direction Chandauka was initially talking about for Sentebale.
Sentebale is being investigated over serious allegations, the events of the past couple of months had to have left a toxic environment, and their funding stream must be completely disrupted. Plus, didn’t Chandauka initially start her takeover by declaring it was no longer necessary for the charity to devote so much time to AIDS, where things were under control? So why would someone with any AIDS related experience be comfortable remaining there.
It’s just really sad this woman’s greed and ego ruined a charity for children. How does she live with herself. Just shameful.
@Windyriver. I just think her research interests would make her a likely advocate for Sentebale’s original purposes. None of the trustees, whether pediatrician or ER physician, would be providing medical care through Sentebale.
