Anna Wintour does not need to ‘approve’ of every Met Gala guest’s outfit

I’m really looking forward to this year’s Met Gala. I cannot wait to see what the men wear, and I cannot wait to see how white celebrities interpret this year’s theme. There were so many concerns in previous years – especially the ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ theme – that Met Gala guests would not do research and they would end up playing into offensive stereotypes or worse. This year’s theme is a minefield: Black Dandyism and the influential style of Black men throughout the history of fashion. It’s actually really bold of Anna Wintour to do this theme and really go all-in, appointing all Black male celebrities as her co-chairs. This year’s co-chairs are LeBron James, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, ASAP Rocky and Pharrell Williams. Well, Anna was on Good Morning America ahead of the gala, and Michael Strahan peppered her with questions:

Anna Wintour is setting the record straight about a long-standing Met Gala rumor. Ahead of Met Gala Monday on May 5, the 75-year-old Vogue editor-in-chief sat down with Good Morning America’s Michael Strahan to reveal if she indeed approves of A-listers’ attire.

“No,” she said laughing. “Many call and ask our advice, so we try and help some of them as best we can. Some, no idea.”

This year’s theme is “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” and all attendees, in theory, must adhere to the dress code, “Tailored for You.”

The 2025 Met Gala co-chairs are Colman Domingo, F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams and the famed fashion editor, alongside honorary chair LeBron James. The group is a mix of Met Gala veterans and newcomers.

“Colman Domingo said he’d text you a photo of what he was wearing,” Strahan, 53, said to his guest, who happily confirmed there was “a discussion.” The former football star continued, “He said he quote ‘died’ with the response when you told him it was a ‘work of art.'”

“It was his idea. It was a clever idea,” Wintour said, giving the Emmy winner credit. When asked if she’d seen looks from the other co-chairs, she said the British race car driver, 40, is waiting for fashion’s biggest night to reveal his outfit.

“Lewis, I’m not sure I entirely believe him, says he doesn’t have a picture, but it’s great,” she said.

Wintour then dished on others involved, saying, “Pharrell [Williams] and [A$AP] Rocky have both described to me what they’re wearing. It sounds perfect.” Circling back to Hamilton, she said, “I trust Lewis. Lewis totally knows what he’s doing.”

I trust Pharrell, Rocky, Colman and Lewis too. Out of those four, I bet Colman and Lewis are the best dressed and the do the most with the “dandy” theme. I wonder if Rihanna will coordinate with Rocky’s look or if she plans to go in another direction. I also wonder if the women attendees are going to go hyper-tailored and menswear-inspired. That was my immediate interpretation of the theme for women: go with an immaculately tailored three-piece suit in a bold color, with a hat and incredible jewelry.

So looking forward to this, and will make sure to find each and every photo of this year’s Met Gala.

If I were going, I’d have planned to wear the same as you, Kaiser: a well-tailored three-piece suit with a twist, heels inspired by Oxford shoes, some outrageous pocket watch, and maybe a top hat.

  4. Jais says:

Honestly, it’s going to be interesting. Can’t wait.

  5. Teddy says:

It’s a minefield of a theme, that’s for sure. Interpretations are going to run the gamut from sublime to train wreck and I’m here for all of it.

  6. Xantha says:

I love watching the Met Gala red carpet every year. I will say this though, not inviting Wisdom Kaye this year was a bad move. He’s really the only tiktoker who should be there imo.

  7. Flamingo says:

I just pray for designers and stylists. Don’t filter it through their unconscious bias. Do the research think about your choices.

So we don’t get certain dresses that were as tone deaf as last year with ‘The Garden of Time’ theme.

  8. Jillian says:

I’m going to a Met Gala viewing event in Chicago tonight: I’m wearing a black suit with a leather harness and a hat 🙂
