Walton Goggins shut down an interview when asked about Aimee Lou Wood

Walton Goggins was recently interviewed by the Times of London, all to promote his latest film, The Uninvited. It was written and directed by Goggins’ wife, Nadia Conners. Which makes it super-awkward because the Times really just wants to talk about The White Lotus and all of the gossip surrounding Walton’s relationship with the British actress Aimee Lou Wood. Aimee and Walton were seemingly very close during TWL’s filming, often posting photos together on Instagram, something shifted months after TWL wrapped. They both used the same Fleetwood Mac song, “Silver Springs,” a song about an affair, on their IG Stories while posting photo tributes to each other. They unfollowed each other on IG and for all of the TWL promotion, they completely avoided each other. They were very close for months (Walton even said Aimee was his soulmate and they were enmeshed) and now it appears as if they do not even speak or communicate. Well, Walton had TWO publicists in the room with him for this interview, and as the Times’ journalist pressed him on Aimee Lou, the publicists shut down the interview. My God. Some highlights:

His stardom reached a new level because of The White Lotus: “I would say so. The White Lotus is the Super Bowl of culture, a turbocharged experience, and Mike White is a very caring, kind, astute observer of the human condition. I’ve had a lot of crazy times in my life in front of and not in front of a camera, but this is certainly something that is profound, not just for me, but I think for everybody that has been a part of it.”

Now everyone knows his name. “A blessing and a curse, isn’t it? Honestly, buddy, and I really mean this, I treat those two impostors the same. My life was OK before The White Lotus, my life will be OK after The White Lotus. I have had a career that has given me opportunities when I could handle them. If this had happened in my twenties or early thirties it would have been a very different reaction.”

Whether he’s fallen out with Aimee Lou: “I’m not gonna have that conversation,” Goggins says. “We’re not going there, thank you,” says the American publicist, one of two who is sitting in on the interview. “Next question,” the British publicist adds.

On people talking about his bald spot & big teeth: “I don’t think about getting older. I don’t give a sh-t. I leave it to other people to talk about hairlines or my big f***ing teeth [he has inserts after losing his front teeth in a baseball accident as a child]. I don’t live a superficial life — looks are irrelevant to me.” That’s easy to say when you look like him. He frowns. “Do you think I’m handsome? That’s very kind of you to say.” It makes a change from the start of his career, when he was told he wasn’t good-looking enough. “I don’t go out of my way to look handsome in a role. I just think about the pain the character is going through.”

The Times brings up Aimee Lou again: When I bring up Wood again he cuts me off. “There is no conversation to be had about that. Sharing politics on social media — it’s in a vacuum.” I make a last forlorn attempt. “What the f***, Ed!” Goggins gasps. “Come on buddy. Wow.” “We’re going to end it there,” the American publicist says. Which is probably just as well.

[From The Times]

I mean… what did Walton expect, especially given that he was speaking to a British outlet and he has all of this not-so-secret drama with a British actress? Those two publicists are doing their jobs poorly as well – could they not give Walton some talking points for when the inevitable Aimee Lou questions came up? Something like Walton saying “Aimee is a doll, we got along great, but it was like having a best friend at camp.” Something in that vein. By shutting down the interview, they’re making it into a much bigger story and adding to the lore of what went down in Thailand. As Stevie Nicks sang, “I know I could’ve loved you, but you would not let me/I’ll follow you down ’til the sound of my voice will haunt you/Give me just a chance/You’ll never get away from the sound of the woman that loves you.”

Note: while this interview came out last week, both Walton and Aimee Lou attended the Met Gala on Monday. I didn’t see any photos where they posed together, of course that doesn’t mean much. But Aimee was asked about Walton on the gala carpet, and she said: “I loved working with Walton. It was the best thing ever.” That… was sort of what Walton should have said.

IMO the reporter was extremely unprofessional. He asked once, twice and still didn’t let it go. WG was there to promote a project not talk about his drama (real or not). And he didn’t owe it to the reporter otherwise.

    • orangeowl says:

I agree, sounds like he would not let up. But as Kaiser said, if he had had a stock answer to the question the first time, hopefully the reporter would have let it go.

I think I’m in the minority but I find him highly unattractive and his persona seems a little tedious. *runs away*

      • Laalaa says:

I agree! His teeth bother me so much because they are very obviously not his real teeth, plus he played a really disturbing character in a stupid little sitcom Unicorn and I don’t even have the strength to watch his WL season

      • BeanieBean says:

I don’t find him attractive either. I also saw that stupid little sitcom Unicorn, and thought why on earth are all these women going gaga after him? It’s not just the teeth (too white as well as too big, his dentist did him dirty), it’s not just the super high forehead, but his eyes! And his, I dunno, aura. 😆

      • Sunny says:

I agree . He has a disproportionately large head and seems really full of himself

      • Square2 says:

“But as Kaiser said, if he had had a stock answer to the question the first time, hopefully the reporter would have let it go.”

No, Ed wouldn’t. Ed Potton is a British Media produced product here, even at The Times (of London), he/they will keep asking the questions, even if you answer diplomatically, and they will find more questions to ask from your answer. Main stream BM is tabloid at heart, every one of them: BBC, Guardian, Observer, i Independent, Economic Times, FT, etc.

    • ABCD says:

I agree! Walton was there to talk about his new movie and the interviewer was completely out of line.

    • CheekImplant says:

Yeah, that person was being an absolute prick.
Walton was & his team seemed not only frustrated by this but also surprised.
The follow-unfollow social media rollercoaster might be a bigger deal than they were prepared for.

    • Lady Esther says:

Agree, he was being a typically obnoxious British journalist. Both publicists did their jobs steering the interview back on track and then ending it when the journalist wouldn’t stop. And Walton was great as well, he didn’t have a hissy fit and storm out, he just kept saying No and let his reps end it. This sets up future interviews to go better for him (because fewer journalists will try it) and shows he works with his team like a pro.

He’s been around a while and knows how the game is played, he gives good soundbites (reading scripts in the nude, anyone?), is gracious to those he’s worked with but is old and mature enough to say No. Whatever the deal with his co-star… shrug. He doesn’t owe anyone an explanation (tm Taylor Swift)

      • Melissa says:

Thank you Lady Esther, agree on all accounts. The reporter was extremely rude, unprofessional and uncalled for insisting on the topic, more so considering Walton was there to promote a film directed by his wife. Perhaps it would’ve been better PR-wise to have a prepared canned answer, but I don’t think he and his publicists expected a trivial behavior on social media to become into such a big deal. So is the world when ran by Gen Zers: your internet history matters the most to them.

Honestly, if something happened between them, whatever. It’s up to them and however way Walton’s marriage is. Nothing that concerns us. His entrance into the mainstream is being wild for better or worse, but he seems to have accepted it and is having the time of his life. It may seem outrageous for outsiders but for us fans it ain’t surprising as this is how he rolls. He’s just an open, emotional dude who wears his heart on his sleeve so all of this is massive after years of steady work and laying low.

    • Jais says:

In this, yeah, the reporter was going too far. I’d imagine that Goggins expects the question but then was clear he didn’t want to answer. But the reporter kept pushing.

    • Libra says:

A stock answer would only open the door to another question. Give them an inch and they’ll take a mile.

  2. Lee says:

I am not a fan of White Lotus and didn’t watch it but I have two theories about this from watching on the outside. The first is that Groggins and his wife have an agreement or opening marriage and the second is that they were trying to do some PR stuff along the lines of Glen Powelland Sydney Sweeney when they filmed their movie. Or it’s nothing and they were just friends and he doesn’t like being asked about her all the time as he’s starting his upward trajectory. (And I will always know him from his sitcom The Unicorn)

    • Justjj says:

As someone who has been manipulated twice by men in “open relationships” who completely downplayed their level of commitment/dedication to their primary partner, or sort of gave 100% only to rescind it later and say their primary partner was their person after fully courting me, chasing me, and promising commitment… I think it just gets messy af when things are open and there’s a man involved who is selectively disclosing or using half truths to get what he wants in the short term with zero consideration for the person he’s getting involved with outside his primary relationship. Take as old as time. I think Aimee was invested, feelings were there on both sides, his wife got freaked by his level of interest/dedication to her and shut it down. The power of the primary partner in these situations. I stiiiill think he was shady about it though. I’m team Aimee. He should be asked about it, imo.

  3. MaisiesMom says:

I’ve loved Goggins as an actor for quite a while now, from “Vice Principals” and “The Righteous Gemstones” which are both great shows. I watched only a few episodes of his sitcom “The Unicorn,” which was meh (not his fault, though).

I will say I’m kind of surprised at his persona now that he’s more in the limelight. For some reason I thought he would be extremely low-key, but he actually seems like a lot? I don’t mean that in a bad way, it just caught me off guard. He’s kind of intense and a bit of a showman.

I do wonder what happened with ALW and as you said, this is just fuel for the gossip. The reporter was being rude but they should have had a canned answer or three ready to go like Aimee did at the Met Gala.

  4. Lightpurple says:

If only reporters were so tenacious when interviewing the Trump administration

  5. GoodWitchGlenda says:

Honestly, I don’t think he or his publicist did anything wrong. The reporter kept asking after being told that relationship would not be discussed TWICE.

Walton’s relationship with a castmate is not in the interest of national security or anything. Once you’re asked to stop asking about it, you should. It’s especially disrespectful since this movie was directed by Walton’s wife.

    • Justjj says:

All he had to say is “I have a lot of respect and admiration for her. I loved working with her on White Lotus.” Whatever. Next question. This response was sort of silly on his part too. He could just give a non-answer that’s still kind and thoughtful to her, and move on in the interview. It’s crappy to Aimee to steamroll questions about her instead of using those opportunities to lift her up and support her as the actor with more power in this case, imo. Like just curtly and politely answer the question/give praise to that experience or her as a professional and then go back to what you’re promoting? Redirecting a couple times would send the message. His persona surprises me a lot though too! I thought he would be more thoughtful and chill. He’s incredibly talented as an actor.

      • GoodWitchGlenda says:

I disagree. “No” is a complete sentence.

      • Normades says:

        @goodwitchglenda

💯. He doesn’t need a bullshit answer. He already said stop twice and dude kept pushing on

  6. outoftheshadows says:

A few thoughts nobody asked for: Goggins was previously married and his wife died by suicide. He went to Thailand immediately after that. He’s been on record saying that he had to walk through areas that he visited immediately after her death in order to film White Lotus. He also said that the character he played was pretty dark and it was hard to switch it off after hours, so he didn’t have as much fun as everyone else on the show.

Also, Jason Isaacs started this whole business by being a dirty gossip. Nobody would have blinked if he hadn’t stirred up so much curiosity. And honestly, if there were hurt feelings on either side, that is patently not our business. My understanding is that Walton and Aimee are on another show together coming up… Maybe they wanted to put a little distance between them before that one begins, so as not to drag their characters into it.

Or maybe they had an affair. Still, bad form on the part of the journalist. No means no, especially after the first time.

I watched a short interview where he talked about stuff he owns. He was so respectful of his mother and her sacrifices, and much of what he valued in life wasn’t expensive but sentimental–like sand from places he had visited. I liked him after hearing all that. I think he feels a lot, and I can empathize that he might not like being grilled about Aimee, or anything else uncomfortable to him. Actors are people too, even if gossip is fun. (And yes, I know where I am! LOL)

    • Melissa says:

@outoftheshadows All of this. Thank you for explaining it as I don’t have the time to do so and you did it succinctly my friend. *thumbs up*

I know! If Jason Isaacs didn’t stir the pot, none of this would’ve happened. Still like him as an actor but I think so much less of him because of this.

      • Normades says:

I definitely think JI said too much that I thought he was actually talking about himself

      • Melissa says:

@Normades I never thought about it that way but you’re probably right. You never know if he was projecting and people got carried away on another direction because so many of them LOVE drama for some reason.

    • SIde Eye says:

outoftheshadows I love what you just wrote!

  7. Stef says:

I think they hooked up on set and then one, or both, if them made a decision to shut it down and move on. He’s very much a method actor and even admitted to keeping himself a bit more isolated on set to match his characters slightly disgruntled persona.

He stood out to me when he guest starred in Sons of Anarchy as transexual Venus VanDamn. He was magnetic in that role and is such a strong character actor.

The fame from TWL feels like it’s brought out the showman ala Righteous Gemstones. Happy for him.

    • Melissa says:

Either it happened or didn’t, and if it did I’m pretty sure it went this way. As a method actor Walton gets very invested in his characters so I’m not surprised he got quite close to Aimee, even to the point of enmeshment. I feel it for them as even being in a relationship you can’t help being attracted to certain people. To be able to connect with a few chosen is human nature after all.

I first noticed him in his role in Django Unchained and he’s been on my radar ever since. He’s such an electrifying presence in every project he takes, whether big or small. I’m thrilled for him receiving all these due accolades and you’re right, he’s been on Baby Billy mode ever since he hit it big. As an introvert I can’t imagine how overwhelming it is but kudos to him as he seems to be handling it in stride. The perks of being an extrovert I guess. LOL
