In 2014, Margot Robbie co-founded a production company called LuckyChap. Margot executive produced Barbie through the company, which scored her a $50 million payday on the backend. LuckyChap has also produced Promising Young Woman and I, Tonya, among others.
LuckyChap just opened a new 5,000-square-foot office in Los Angeles. The new office space used to be a fish shop, so they needed to do a complete overhaul of the space. They worked with interior designer Scarlett Hessian to completely transform it. Margot and Scarlett just gave Architectural Digest a detailed tour. As it turns out, Margot took several pieces of the Barbie set with her! The office chairs in LuckyChap’s conference room are the same pink ones that were featured in the Mattel offices, where Will Ferrell’s character was holding meetings.
This Barbie likes to repurpose movie props.
Indeed, while designing her production company LuckyChap’s brand new Los Angeles office space, Margot Robbie took a few office chairs from the set of the blockbuster to use as the assistants’ desk chairs.
“The chairs are actually in the Barbie movie when you’re in the Mattel CEO office and all the Mattel guys are sitting around on the pink chairs,” the three-time Oscar nominee said in Architectural Digest’s May 27 episode of its Open Door series. “We just had them reupholstered, because at the end of the movie—I mean, they were quite expensive, actually—I was like, ‘Wait, what’s going to happen to these chairs?’”
So, Margot’s designer Scarlett Hessian took the $3,195 Saarinen armchairs—sat in by Will Ferrell and his fellow “Mattel execs” in the film—and reupholstered them from their formerly blush pink fabric into their new natural-toned orange-and-white checkered fabric.
As far as the rest of the inspiration for the LuckyChap offices, which Margot shares with her husband Tom Ackerley and their business partner Josey McNamara? The designer noted the trio did not want to be flashy.
“These guys didn’t want any of their awards on display,” Scarlett told Architectural Digest in a separate May 27 interview. “So I’ve hidden them among the bookshelves. You might casually come across a BAFTA.”
In fact, Josey told the publication he recently stumbled across a Golden Globe in the printer room, which Margot acknowledged is intentional.
“We were too embarrassed to put any awards anywhere else around the office,” she continued in Open Door. “We hide them amongst the books and it’s a humble brag that way.”
That is so cool! I love that Margot repurposed those chairs. I get why she had them reupholstered to match the space, but it would have been a neat little easter egg if she’d kept them the pink color! The entire office space is absolutely gorgeous and is worth every penny. The terrace is super fun, too.
Margot’s office is also incredible. She says that she wanted it to have a big couch because she does so much reading. If I had to read scripts and books all day long on a comfortable couch like that, I would legit fall asleep and get nothing done! I’m so impressed by all of you who are able to get work done while on a comfortable couch. Margot also confirms that the table in the screening room used to be her kitchen island. That is some commitment to repurposing and I am here for it. It’s also too funny that they’re too embarrassed to put their awards on display. Y’all did a thing that won awards! Display that sh-t loud and proud! You deserve it.
Here’s Margot’s Architectural Digest video:
God that living room is depressing. Also, yay on the repurposing!
I love that she is so successful as a producer. She’s a gorgeous actress but clearly she’s got a lot more going on than looks. always makes me smile when “Margot Robbie, P.G.A.” appears in the credits.
I know!! I’m a die hard Margot fan for the exact same reasons. How cute that they would hide the awards in the kitchen. I love the office space too. My only issue is the drapes, they make everything look dated and look silly with exposed pipes, but I never like them so..
Would love to know what she’s up to these days…can’t wait for her next project.
She’s playing Cathy in a Wuthering Heights remake.
Very cute chairs
I have been working on my couch since 2020. I have my laptop tray and just switch between a lot of screens. It’s heaven, it’s hell when I have to go in the office and sit on a chair for hours. I mean, I get how lucky I am but. The couch is full on perk and luxury.
