Jared Leto has been accused of preying on underage girls for decades

When Russell Brand was credibly accused of multiple instances of sexual assault, it was one of the least surprising moments of the past decade. So too with Jared Leto, who falls in the same Russell Brand category of “It’s Been An Open Secret For Years.” The only surprising part is that it’s taken THIS long for someone to do a serious exposé on Leto’s decades of skeevy, predatory behavior. The year is 2025, and #MeToo has finally come for Jared Leto. Air Mail published the exposé, in which nine women describe their stories of being preyed upon by Leto. Most of the women were just girls when Leto approached them and began grooming them – his type, it seems, is “girls around the age of 16.” You can read the full Air Mail piece here. Here’s an excerpt:

But the theatrics, the robes, the rituals, and the guru-posturing at this and other Mars-hosted events haven’t fully been able to obscure decades’ worth of rumors about Leto behaving inappropriately with younger women in his orbit. I spoke with nine of these women, who revealed a darker side to the 53-year-old actor.

On September 12, 2005, the New York Post published an item on Leto, who had, a few years earlier, appeared opposite Jennifer Connelly in the movie Requiem for a Dream. The story opened with the blunt line: “Jared Leto likes ’em young.”

Though Leto, 33 years old at the time, had been spotted around New York with Ashley Olsen and Lindsay Lohan—who were both of age by this point—the New York Post alleged that he was more interested in groups of teenage models staying at the Maritime Hotel. “Girls from IMG, Elite, Next and Women are staying there, and Jared has been hitting on all of them,” an anonymous source told the paper. “He’s a serial texter. He is constantly texting these other 16- and 17-year-old girls. It’s really kind of creepy.” (A representative for Leto calls the New York Post item “recycled tabloid fodder and demonstrably false.”)

Twenty years later, the women I spoke to say Leto’s alleged past behavior was not a phase but rather part of a long-standing pattern—one that was and continues to be widely known in some circles and, generally, quietly accepted. “It’s been an open secret for a long time,” one of the women tells me.

Another woman I spoke to, a model and music producer, says she was 16 when, in 2006, Leto approached her at Urth Caffé in Los Angeles, then a popular destination for Hollywood agents and middle-school girls. The woman’s mother was outside waiting for a table. As the woman pushed through the crowd to go to the bathroom, Leto—seated nearby with Olsen, 19, whom he was rumored to be dating at the time—grabbed her arm.

“I looked down and it was Jared Leto,” the woman says. “We had a quick conversation, and he got my number.” A few days later, Leto called her home in the middle of the night. “I don’t know if he was on drugs or what … It was the weirdest, grossest voice…. [But] for me, it’s Jared, you know?” (A representative for Leto says he “has not had a drink or used drugs in over 35 years.”)

That night, Leto was hosting a party at his house in Los Angeles’s Laurel Canyon neighborhood organized by Brent Bolthouse, a nightlife promoter behind the then infamous Neon Carnival parties—lavish, invitation-only affairs held at the Desert International Horse Park, in Thermal, during Coachella.

Leto invited the woman, but she declined. “I didn’t even have a driver’s license,” she says. Still, over the next three weeks, the calls kept coming. “Always at one, two, three A.M.,” she remembers. “And the conversations turned sexual. He’d ask things like, ‘Have you ever had a boyfriend? Have you ever sucked a d–k?’” The woman says the experience left her shaken. She was in rehab at the time and discussed it with her counselor. “He changed—his voice, the way he talked. It scared me,” she says. “That was the first time I thought, ‘Oh my God, that’s not just in movies.’” (The woman’s mother, who she says overheard one of their phone calls, has confirmed her story.)

[From Air Mail]

I’ll admit that I couldn’t even get through the whole piece, I was so disgusted. I believe all of these women, and I believe Leto has done even worse to even more girls and women. Leto and his people knew this was coming – I would imagine that his team has probably had their statements and blanket denials ready since 2017. I bet some of those people are even shocked that it’s taken this long for any of this to come out. This feels like the tip of the iceberg. I hope I’m wrong, but I doubt I am.

Never followed or liked him particularly, but the stories I read about him, mostly the ones if his “method” antics on the set of Joker had me thinking “this person is disturbed”.
    So not surprised.
I hope those women will have the justice they deserve.

  2. Many of us have been hearing about his crimes for a decade and knowing it’s taken this long is heartbreaking because of all of the victims who could have been spared.

At least Jared didn’t go maga-Jesus like that fraud Russell Brand.

  3. sevenblue says:

I saw some famous men’s tweets about how he doesn’t even wait for a girl to turn 18 in order to pursue her. It is definitely a very open secret in Hollywood, since he is still getting studio movies. If he was beyond his working years, he would be exposed long ago. People with money protect men like him because he makes them money.

  4. lamejudi says:

I listened to the Beyond the Blinds podcast on Leto. Very disturbing allegations.

  5. Michael says:

Why does he continue to get work? Even if the Producers and Directors do not care about the allegations they know they are out there and I have heard about this for well over a decade so it is not exactly a secret. So what happens when the star of your movie brings down the entire production because suddenly these charges pop up and he gets sued or indicted. There goes a multi million dollar project that may have taken years to get off the ground. Why would people take that risk for a guy with no real box office appeal?

    • mblates says:

i mean, no one cares these days. people still go see movies with these people in it. the defense is-that’s their personal life and it has no affect on the movie. they still released the flash with ezra miller, and he’s nowhere near the star leto is.

  6. Amy Bee says:

I seem to remember reading an article about him and his cult a few years ago so this is not surprising. People knew about him and he was still getting invites to events like the Met Gala.

  7. Justpassingby says:

Reddit is filled with stories about his highly toxic, gross behavior…

  8. Bqm says:

I feel like I’ve been reading stories about him, especially when he’s touring, since the dawn of internet gossip sites. Like the Ted Casablanca era. Just like Weinstein.

I hope it IS the tip of the iceberg. Because we all know it’s out there and to take down a young(ish), white male Oscar winner it’s going to take a good bit. Leto may bring cred but he’s never been a box office draw by himself. If James Franco can get drummed out of mainstream movies then so can Leto.

  9. Clur says:

I saw him in a Blockbuster video in 2003 when I was around 15 years old and he definitely gave me creeper vibes at the time.

  10. Smart&Messy says:

“Urth Caffé in Los Angeles, then a popular destination for Hollywood agents and middle-school girls.” What kind of agents are we talking??

  11. It Really Is You, Not Me says:

I’m not a Hollywood insider and so most of these allegations have been shocking when they came out. I had no idea about Weinstein, I don’t even think I knew his name before the allegations started coming up in 2016. Had no idea about Kevin Spacey, Danny Masterson, or any of the others. But even I have been hearing about Jared Leto for years so this is not a shock at all. I’m glad someone’s finally exposing it.

  12. Viktoria Kaynar says:

I mean how is this even news. This has been openly known for so long and I think the reality is even worse and depraved because him getting away with it for so long while Harvey Weinstein and so many others got caught up in Me Too probably only emboldened him….he has always given me the creeps so not surprised. Just sad it’s taken this long!

  13. Jaded says:

He was BFFs with disgraced photographer Terry Richardson and was an active part of Richardson’s vile and violent pr0n photo sessions. The photos are still out there on the internet if you have the stomach for them but a warning, you can’t unsee them, they’re that horrible.

  14. Walking the Walk says:

After he started his cult, I was just over him. I am not shocked to read about these accusations.

  15. Nuks says:

Tron: Ares doesn’t come out until early October. I wonder if they’re gonna make it with this floating island of skeevy trash. I don’t know why they ever put him in it in the first place.

  16. Square2 says:

I can’t take the results of any Awards seriously. They knew he is/was a pervert, and still awarded him an Oscar.

So, when is the exposè coming for the other actor, who attended (or slept through) Columbia University classes & a New Yorrker? These white men really got away with a lot of bad behavior.

    • Bqm says:

Who’s that? Franco got exposed and is reduced to flicks that don’t even get a wiki link. Gyllenhaal? Chalamet?

  17. Kynesgrove says:

There were entire LiveJournal pages(I just exposed my age lol) about his creepy behavior. Why did it just now get exposed? I hope he burns honestly. I’m sick of people being creeps.

  18. Catherine says:

Jo Thornely did an episode (#38) about Jared Leto for her podcast about cults called Zealot. Published April 16, 2020, she and a guest talk about his island where he invites fans from Thirty Seconds to Mars, and he does a lot of weird and shady stuff there. It is worth a listen.

  19. martha says:

With this expose and the current Sean Combs trial, I hope he’s sweating. You’re probably right, though, that he and his people have prepared for this. They’re going to get nasty.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he goes the Russell Brand route.

  20. terra says:

I recall mentioning over twenty years ago to my best friend that I’d heard bad things about Leto. They’d met him once backstage a festival with his band and had nothing but good things to say, but in my head I was thinking, “yeah, but you’re a guy. It’s different.” I’m upset for his victims to have been right, but I’m glad they’re finally having their voices heard.

  21. Lau says:

Gross and not in the least bit surprising. I vaguely remember him having a sort of cult as well.
He’s a creep and I don’t expect him to face any consequences of course because men like him never do.
