Sydney Sweeney on her boxing training: ‘I didn’t fit in any of my clothes’

My opinion on Sydney Sweeney has changed dramatically over the course of one summer. I used to be a fan and defender, if no other reason than she’s a Virgo (like me) and she’s not a nepo baby. There’s all of this space in her interviews where she gets to talk about her hard work and hustle to get where she is, space which is usually devoted to a nepo baby’s cries of everyone underestimating them because they have famous parents. But yeah… while Sydney worked to get where she is, she’s also a Republican who plays around with eugenics and messy politics. Sydney covers the latest issue of W Magazine, partly to promote the bio-pic about boxer Christy Martin, which comes out soon. Some highlights from W Mag:

Working on the bio-pic for boxer Christy Martin: “I loved it. I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training. I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour. My body was completely different. I didn’t fit in any of my clothes. I’m usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27. My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, Oh my god. But it was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong.”

Her parents taught her to be sporty: “My mom told me from a very young age to fall in love with as many things as possible. And so I did fall in love, again and again: I love sports. I love being outside. I was on the ski team, and I wakeboarded. I slalom ski on water. I was on the soccer team and the softball team. And then my parents got me into grappling, which is like wrestling, and kickboxing. I was the only girl at the dojo. I trained there from 13 until about 19. I fought all guys. I liked to think that if sh-t went down, I might be able to step up.”

As a kid, she had a five-year plan to make it as an actress: “It took a little longer than five years… I really believe in the 10-year plan now. My first real job was one line on the show Criminal Minds, or maybe Heroes—I can’t remember which one was first.”

She never worried about getting banged up: “No. I would have bruises all over me. I loved it! My mom always wanted to make sure that acting wasn’t the only thing in my life.”

She’s all about the hustle: In fact, Sweeney has endorsement deals with 10 different companies, including Kérastase, Laneige, and Miu Miu. She does adore real estate and claimed to get starstruck only when she met Drew and Jonathan Scott, aka the Property Brothers, stars of HGTV. “Those are the only reality shows that I watch,” said Sweeney. “When I saw the Property Brothers, I freaked out.”

She’s attracted to roles which scare her: “In general, if something scares me, then usually I’m going to do it, because that means I’m challenging myself. But I do have really bad stage fright. I’m getting better now, but I give enormous credit to anybody who does theater or live talk shows. I’m terrified by both.”

[From W Magazine]

I’m also including her W “Screen Tests” video below, where she talked about how she never did that rite of passage for every young actor: a smallish role on Law & Order or L&O: SVU. She says that she still would love a part on SVU and she’s always telling her agent that. Which… sure, why not. A lot of people think Christy could be Oscar-bait, for Sydney’s lead performance in particular. I honestly think she would have had a better shot if she wasn’t cozying up to this authoritarian administration.

Most of the reviews I’ve read have mentioned that her performance is ok but that Merrit Weaver and Katy O’Brian are amazing.

I also used to admire SS’s hustle but wasn’t a huge fan of her acting. She can cry but when delivering dialogue she looks/sounds stoned or half asleep. Now that she’s outed herself as full on MAGA I’m definitely not supportive of her career.

You can really see on this video that Sydney Sweeney doesn’t really have those kinds of eyes that show a lot of white (sanpaku). It seems she has been faking sanpaku eyes in photos because it has been trendy.

Of course they had to add the part about her various endorsement deals and what a hustler she is. *YAWN* I just don’t get the narrative that her PR team is always pushing of her being ambitious and driven. It’s just very odd and doesn’t humanize her or make her really relatable, which is what she needs after coming across as an out-of-touch and aloof WW. IMO if you’re driven you don’t need to have it said in every single interview–just comes across as try-hard and calculated.

You know who’s driven? Jenna Ortega. She’s an actress, writer, and advocate who plans on directing in the future and has been working on a script for years. Yet you NEVER hear her talk about that interviews, probably because she’s actually, ya know, interesting.

I was a fan. But I don’t f—k with fascists. The jeans ad was dumb, got her exposed as a MAGA Republican, and there is no chance of her winning the Oscar now. Not in this town lol

Congrats to her team on not stopping the American Eagle ad’s dumb concept.

Her dating Scooter Braun is just another example of her horrific judgment. Guess she doesn’t need Swifties or Democrats lol yikes

  4. ThatGirlThere says:

I had no real opinions on her but after I saw those pictures of her mother’s red hate maga theme birthday part my opinion turned to dislike. What’s to like? She’s a racist.

And I also hate her styling. Every look of hers on the red carpet is dreadful.

  5. Meri says:

Sweeney, your *hair* lmao!!! I don’t know if you can even call it 80s hair, maybe you could call it “80s movie’s idea of what people from “”the future”” would do for hairstyles”?

Well I do like it when people take swings out of their comfort zone when it comes to fashion, so I guess I can’t knock her for this one.

  6. Thinking says:

I feel her performance might get unfavourably compared to Hilary Swank in Million Dollar Baby. Swank has a gravitas in that type of role that I didn’t see from Sweeney in the trailer for this movie, even though she probably put in a lot of effort.

  7. Kirsten says:

The rest of the editorial isn’t my favorite but the cover is gorgeous.

  8. February pisces says:

I’ve never followed her or seen her in anything. Being a maga supporter, the American Eagle campaign, going to the Bezos wedding and now dating Scooter Braun, I think she’s determined to align herself with money and power, rather than have any integrity. She wants to be rich and famous, not an actress.

I’m from Spokane and very familiar with the area Sydney was raised in the Idaho panhandle including familiarity with her family. My family and I just roll our eyes so hard when we’re at the store seeing her on a magazine as the “It Girl”. God knows what she did in Hollywood or who her parents paid off to get her that label, but she is not someone to respect or idolize, and that’s all I’ll say.
