The Duke and Duchess of Sussex hired Meredith Maines as their director of communications (or a title equivalent of that) in early March. Maines’s effect was felt immediately, and I’ve noticed a huge change in the responsiveness of Harry and Meghan’s communications, as well the new ease with which they pivot from ridiculous storylines created by the British press. As many remember, I used to complain a lot about H&M’s refusal to have proactive PR and their noticeable PR bungles in 2023/24 especially. There’s been none of that this year, and I’ve praised the new approach repeatedly. Well, it looks like Meredith Maines and new hire Emily Robinson (who worked as a publicist for Netflix’s The Crown) are continuing to change Harry and Meghan’s communications team. They hired an outside firm, and they’ve also let some people go.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had another shakeup in their staff. Four members of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s staff have parted ways with the couple in recent weeks, PEOPLE has confirmed. Staffers who have departed include Los Angeles-based deputy press secretary Kyle Boulia and U.K. press officer Charlie Gipson, who were both brought on last year, Hello! reported on June 13.
The shift comes after Meghan, 43, and Harry, 40, hired Meredith Maines as their first chief communications officer, who previously worked for Google, Hulu and American Idol, earlier this year. The couple also recently added Emily Robinson, formerly of Netflix, as a new director of communications and retained a team from Method Communications.
Last year, Meghan and Prince Harry’s global press secretary and head of communications Ashley Hansen parted ways with the couple as she launched her own communications firm. The Duke of Sussex’s chief of staff Josh Kettler also left his position after three months in 2024 after a trial period, with the decision to part ways being mutual.
“Something tells me there will be another change in the future,” a source told Hello!. “Meghan and Harry have hired some of the most incredible people at the top of their fields, yet somehow none of them ever work out.”
Maines said in a statement about the change, “As the Duke and Duchess’s business and philanthropic interests grow, I have made the strategic decision to move toward a more traditional communications structure of specialist agency support, as previously reported in Forbes and PR Week several weeks ago. Transitioning from a team of two to an agency support staff of eight, operating across five different time zones, will give international media and stakeholders better access, and critically, faster response times to inquiries,” she added.
I can already tell that the British media is mad about this because Maines cut off several avenues of tabloid storylines. “Meghan can’t keep staff!” When clearly, this is Maines taking charge and continuing to grow the new comms strategy she’s already been implementing in the past four months. Maines issuing a statement (a statement which went to People, the Daily Beast, the Telegraph and many other outlets) was also a great way to handle this – it’s not “the Sussexes’ team is in crisis,” it’s “this is house-cleaning and we’re building something bigger and more responsive.”
While I thought that recent Puck story about As Ever was 95% bullsh-t, I also think that these hirings and firings at Archewell are sort of obscuring As Ever’s staff build-up – Meghan has hired a lot of new people this year, and there’s a new energy with Meghan in building/growing mode. The Telegraph also reported that both Meghan and Harry have hired separate chiefs of staff – Meghan hired Sarah Fosmo, Harry hired Miranda Barbot. Of course, the Telegraph also claims that M&H have lost six staffers now… but they only name four. So I think it’s just four people. Interestingly, the Telegraph had this tea:
The changes come after the Duke’s BBC interview, in which he railed against his father and complained of an “establishment stitch-up” after losing his security appeal against the Government. The interview is not thought to have gone down well at Buckingham Palace.
However, one source told The Telegraph that the writing was on the wall for certain members of staff following the publication of an excoriating profile of the couple in Vanity Fair in January. The article alleged that several people underwent “long-term therapy” or took extended breaks from work after working with the Duchess, while Prince Harry was portrayed as a naive, lonely figure who had failed to make any friends in the US.
The social media manager is understood to have left before the Duke and Duchess released the extraordinary video of them twerking in a hospital delivery room. The footage, taken as they awaited the birth of their daughter, Princess Lilibet, was published on the Duchess’s Instagram page earlier this month and was met with a mixture of incredulity and amusement.
Yeah… Harry & Meghan aren’t switching up their teams because “the palace was mad about Harry’s BBC interview” nor “Meghan’s dance video made international headlines.” But I completely buy that the Vanity Fair cover story was a turning point, and one which Harry & Meghan’s team mishandled. If all of the people let go were the same ones around for that VF hit piece, I totally agree with Maines that new people needed to be brought in.

So much energy for a couple who aren’t publicly funded. If only they printed as much about the goings on of the platinum standard grey men of the palaces 😂
They really don’t have much to write about except the Sussexes. Surely the Father’s Day photos of Willy and Trooping should have given them a feast this week, but noooo, the Sussexes are the Sun. 🌞
This change up of staff at this time makes total sense from a business perspective, you bring on certain people to start the buildup, certain people to keep it going and then others to start driving it forward. None of this is newsworthy except that it’s Meghan and Harry who are involved. I listen to several podcasts about female founders/entrepreneurs and they all go through this, it’s just that they’re not Meghan.
This is why these people are always on the back foot when it comes to Sussex successes. They’re always trying to explain why typical practices is somehow odd and indicative of turmoil when it really isn’t. And just serves to make them look out of touch with the actual business world and without any real sources.
It’s not odd at all for people to depart if they restructure a company and how the company is going to operate. It’s not odd to bring in people who have more experience in driving your strategic vision and that may mean letting go of the people that don’t have that experience. And is definitely not odd to bring in new people if the people on staff can’t handle your needs. It’s why so many companies have trial periods for executives.
They received a completely rational explanation from their head of communications and instead it’s still, no no it must mean that everyone hates them. At this point five years on wouldn’t they have a hard time attracting people with the pedigree that they do? I’m sure these people received a severance and yes it sucks to lose your job but this happens a lot when you work at new organizations they may go in a different direction. The idea that they are trying to replicate a ” royal household” when people who have worked for Microsoft, The Obama Foundation and Netflix are coming onboard is laughable.
The Telegraph used to be a respectable newspaper. Why do they keep on publishing this rubbish. BTW I though the video was brilliant. Harry was being really supportive, unlike his brother with his wife.
I wish the British press had this same energy for the comings and goings at KP. The DM is trying to put their own spin it bysaying that Harry and Meghan are building their own Royal Household but it seems like it’s really Meridith Maines reorganising the team around her and that Harry and Meghan have given the reins to her to do so. And no the BBC interview now the twerking videos were mistakes. The British press only think so because they’ve realised that Meghan and Harry don’t care what they about about them and that they’ve lost control of Harry and Meghan and Meghan’s Instagram followers have increased since the video.
The British media hate the BBC interview because they know what an important historical reference point it will be and Harry got some important talking points on the record in his own words. They hate the hospital video because it went viral and got a lot of positive attention on social media changing the narrative that the British media want to present about Harry and Meghan. Neither were a mistake and both happened after Meredith was in place. She is the one who organised the BBC interview.
I can people VF was a turning point but I’m confused at how Harry and Meghan should have handled it. By responding more quickly? Either way, I’m excited to see how their team develops.
I think it was best to respond publicly to the Vanity Fair piece it came out just before Trump’s inauguration and most people who don’t follow royal news aren’t even aware of it. The British media tried to make a big deal of it but even they got tired eventually. The new communications team is a good idea to prevent bad hires who would go to tabloids and glossy magazines with anonymous quotes.
“I can people VF” jeez my morning comments are something else sometimes…. Thank you for the response @Julia despite the confusing wording.
I don’t agree at all that the vanity fair piece was a turning point. It was mainly the British royalist press & their supporters who even cared about it- mainly because a lot of the stories it pushed has been repeated ad nauseam. I didnt know anyone who was even aware of it unlike with eg when they split with Spotify which IS something I think their comms team handled poorly.
There’s not much a comms team can do about a boring article like the vanity fair one with obviously fake rumours like about a divorce book which the same article even dispels. It wasn’t that different to numerous other negative articles & like those H&M have simply got on with their work& life. Meghan having social media now is helpful in dispelling dumb stories about their marriage & family life & her discussing her life & business more this year has shown how little many in the media actually know about their lives.
I even saw way more traction on social media to a New York post article derived from the Hollywood reporter bullying story. That went viral with people pushing back on the obvious misogynoir & tropes.
These staff exits just seem like the type of restructure that happens in lots of orgs when a new senior exec joins and wants to shape their department in their vision. Their head of comms explained that she has brought on an agency to support & help with ensuring quick intl responses which sounds necessary given what their previous comms head said about volume of stories being comparable to a head of state. She mentions that it’s a traditional structure she’s implementing.
So not much of a story but the uk press has to spin it to suggest it’s because of the vanity fair story that only they really cared for or because of the labour room video they claim wasn’t received well. Despite it being viral on various platforms, having almost 50m views on Meghan’s IG page & likely resulting in her gaining 800k more followers.
I totally understand why they have to keep changing their team. After all, they’re dealing with negativity from huge media outlets and they need people who are equipped to handle those embellished (and downright false) stories printed in those media outlets. Abusing Harry and Meghan (most especially Meghan) is a money making business (unfortunately). H & M have to continue to fight back. I’m glad that they’re controlling their own narrative. The British media is mad because they can’t control the narrative anymore. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the BBC interview, or the pregnancy video. No one in that family has any moral rectitude to criticize Meghan and Harry’s video. No one! If that had been Kate, the narrative from the British media would’ve been totally different. They are pissed off, because the video has gone completely viral and is approaching 50 million views and has given Meghan an additional 700k Instagram followers.
Completely standard restructuring of their comms team, from CCO (Chief Communications Officer) Maines, to deputy CCO (eg their new Netflix Director of Comms) as second in command, and swapping out some of the UK-US oriented folks for a properly international team, supported with an external agency. It’s what I’ve been saying for years: Meghan and Harry needed a bigger, more professional and organizational approach to comms to support all of their various activities, like a major corporation, not one that was a few in-house people focused on putting out fires and on them as individuals rather than representatives of “Meghan and Harry Inc.”
Nothing can be done about the odd bullshit Vanity Fair or Hollywood Reporter articles given the takeover of many Anglophone outlets by the British, but with time and effort, those types of narratives will diminish and/or have less negative impact on Harry and Meghan’s brand development, reputational protection and business goals. Particularly as Meredith is clearly developing or leveraging existing relationships with different outlets, ones where Murdoch or the royal rota have less influence and which matter more to Meghan and Harry’s business interests.
Meredith knows what she’s doing and is delivering. Flawless execution since she came on board, no notes. Bravo!
The British media know very well how things roll and they know this kind of structure means they won’t be able to get away with as much as they used to. Meghan and Harry (and most importantly, Meredith) know what they’re doing and those gutter rags will just have to suck it. Game on!
Their communications has been better lately, and it has to be because of Maines. Let her hire and fire whoever she sees fit because handling these stories and promoting their projects are important, so she needs to hire the team she thinks is most competent to do that.
