Mariah Carey ‘just doesn’t believe in’ the passage of time & doesn’t have a birthday

Mariah Carey has been in the news in recent weeks because she announced a new studio album, and she’s already released a new single, “Type Dangerous.” It feels like Mariah hasn’t really been in promotional-mode in years, right? Maybe I’m misremembering, but her last album was released in 2018, so it really has been a minute. Anyway, Mariah took part in a Capital FM interview in the UK. Those youths had no idea that Mariah does not acknowledge or support the passage of time, birthdays or her age.

Mariah Carey has one very unconventional belief system. She doesn’t believe in the passage of time. On Monday, June 16, the superstar singer appeared on the U.K. radio station Capital FM, where co-hosts Sian Welby, Jordan North and Chris Stark, each asked her a series of questions about what she does or doesn’t support — including acknowledging time.

North asked the 56-year-old singer, “Is it true you don’t acknowledge the passing of time?”

“That is true,” Carey candidly confirmed.

When Welby asked what she meant by that, Carey simply replied, “I just don’t believe in it.” Stark, still confused, wanted to know if she was referring to time zones, but Carey said, “No, just time,” she added.

Welby then said, “So no clocks? Just not into that?”

“Yeah. No, just let it go,” Carey nonchalantly replied.

But Welby pressed further and asked, “Do you celebrate your birthday?”

“I don’t have a birthday, no,” said the “Dreamlover” singer. “Anniversaries, yes.”

Stark, who continued to be perplexed, asked, “But if we were to meet up later, how would we know when?” But North retorted, “It’s on Mariah’s time.”

“Yeah, I would have someone call you and figure it out,” Carey proposed.

For true Mariah devotees, this is not a surprise. What is a surprise is that she does acknowledge other people’s birthdays, just not her own. Someone must remind her about other people’s birthdays, because otherwise, she would happily not acknowledge the passage of time whatsoever. It also explains why she’s never on time for anything, which has always been one of the criticisms lodged against her – she’s constantly showing up hours late to appointments and appearances. Anyway, as I get older, I have to admit that Mariah’s beliefs are growing on me. I also feel like we should spend less energy on the passage of time.

I think this is one of those things where everyone gets to take their own path.
I love the passage of time, i love aging (the alternative is death), i like being a 70s kid and and 80s teen.
And an adult who did not have to pay attention to pop culture since basically the start of this century.
i love being over 50 (note: the only thing a woman shouldn’t wear when she is over 50 is the weight of other people’s opinions)

But also- if Mariah or anyone is like- i am timeless or age is a number, or whatever version of that- if that is how your mind works- fabulous.
Enjoy eternal youth for your whole lifespan.
    Dye your grey or don’t.

    Good for Mariah.
And we don’t have to have Mariah’s money to say: i’m doing it the way i want, screw your calendar dates.

    Always a Mariah fan.

  5. Tis True Tis True says:

People have to realize time blindness is a thing. People have very different abilities in terms of feeling the passage of time. And it is incredibly restrictive and anxiety inducing to deal with people who treat being on time as non negotiable and some sort of moral failing. Good on Mariah for saying no to all of that.

  6. J.Ferber says:

Will always love Mariah. Testifying against Diddy one day and not believing in time because it makes her older the next. She’s got a mix of bravery and adorable kookiness and I’m always here for it.
