Troy Aikman is ‘not hanging out’ with his Montecito neighbors, the Sussexes

Troy Aikman is a retired football player and NFL Hall of Famer. He’s 58 years old and a California native, although he’s best known to football fans for his years playing for the Dallas Cowboys, where he won three Super Bowl rings. After his football career was over, he returned to California, where he has a summer home in Montecito. You see where we’re going with this, right? Well, Aikman was doing promotion for his new line of light beer, and Us Weekly obviously asked him about his famous neighbors, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Sidenote: it really feels like H&M made Montecito into a globally-renowned destination, right?

NFL Hall of Famer Troy Aikman has some very famous neighbors at his home in northern California — but their paths haven’t crossed yet. In an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, 58, said he’s been spending part of his summer at his property in Montecito, near the residence of Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle.

“I haven’t run into them,” Aikman said, while speaking to Us about his EIGHT Elite Light Beer. “But they are there, from what I can gather. I think anyone with a heartbeat knows that they’re out there. But I’m not hanging with them, that’s for sure.”

Aikman joked, “I don’t think they’re drinking much light beer.”

While he might not be sharing any cold ones with the Duke, 40, and Duchess, 43, this summer, Aikman explained how he still manages to enjoy a few beers while being in “the best shape of my life.”

“I’m more mindful of what I’m eating and what I’m consuming,” Aikman said of his dedication to health and wellness. “No processed foods. Those who know me know I love beer. But those who know me know I also love to work out. They thought, well, isn’t that a contradiction of your lifestyle? Instead, I think it’s a total compliment because I really do feel like life has to be celebrated.”

[From Us Weekly]

This is Us Weekly’s exclusive, and they weren’t shady at all – they were clearly doing a promotional interview with Aikman as part of his beer launch, and they cleverly got him on the record about his neighbors in Montecito. So why is every other outlet running this as “Aikman snubs the Sussexes” or “Football icon has no interest in meeting Harry & Meghan?” The way I read this, he wasn’t being snarky at all – he was making fun of himself, saying he’s not cool enough to hang out with them, and that he’s an average-joe beer drinker while they’re probably a lot fancier. The thing is, I’m sure Harry probably loves a light beer?? Aikman should call up his neighbor and see if Harry wants to drink some beer and watch a football game.

This is silly. That man did not shade the Sussexes. Although I’d agree that Harry probably drinks light beer every now and then. The fact that Troy Aikman says that anyone with a heartbeat knows they’re out there in Montecito is funny though. Bc it’s true.

    • Megan says:

Why would he know them? I don’t see much potential for overlap in their friend groups and he clearly isn’t there all year so they likelihood of a chance encounter is pretty slim.

      • Becks1 says:

that was my reaction to this headline – why would he hang out with them? They’re in different age brackets, different industries, Aikman’s kids are in their early 20s (I just googled haha) so he’s not doing the school run and overlapping with the Sussexes, and he only lives there part-time.

his response was perfect though – light hearted and brought it back to the product he’s pitching.

  2. Noo says:

In all fairness to Troy Aikman he probably finds it difficult to get out socializing with new people given the mobility issues from how far Joe Buck is up his butt.

  3. KoRAR says:

He wasn’t being mean, and even sounded a bit resentful that Sussex had passed him over. But the question should be, why do they talk about Sussex when advertising his beer? Well, you don’t even have to know Sussex, just talk about them and you get headlines and a million dollars worth of advertising. Nothing happens without a reason.

  4. ThatGirlThere says:

They’re so dumb too because Troy’s beer 8 launched a couple of years ago. He’s clearly doing more promotion for it but it’s not new. The lives of these fools really revolve around the Sussex.

  5. Amy Bee says:

So is Troy Aikman ok with US Weekly using Harry and Meghan to sell his beer? I wouldn’t but that’s just me.

  6. Dee(2) says:

This is so stupid. It’s annoying when the British media wants to ask every single American and any person that lives in California if they’re friends with Harry and Meghan. I really hope that US based magazines and papers don’t start doing it too. Why do they act like Harry and Meghan have to hang out with literally everyone that lives in Montecito? They don’t do that for anyone else. Did they also ask him if he hung out with Oprah, Ellen and Portia before they moved, Katy Perry and Orlando before they put their house on the market? Other than living in the same small town why would they hang out with each other?

  7. spudlykate says:

I agree that he’s clearly being self deprecating, like “why would Harry and Meghan be hanging out with little ol’ me” – it’s the same joke any rando might make about any famous person. But of course the British media will twist his joking comment every which way to make it seem like H&M are desperately knocking down Troy Aikman’s door and he’s busy moving a dresser in front of it to keep them out.

The UK tabloids will twist any comment about H&M into something negative, this is a typical example.
