We’ve got another update about the Scrubs reboot. Back in May, Zach Braff confirmed that he’ll be returning as J.D., which led to speculation that many, if not all, of his original castmates would also return in some capacity. A few weeks ago, Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke were the next OG cast members to announce their return. Faison coming back was a no-brainer, but I wasn’t sure Chalke would do it.
Sarah was at San Diego Comic-Con last week for the Rick and Morty panel. The big news from that panel was the announcement that Keith David’s character, President Curtis, is getting his own, self-titled spin-off show. After the panel, the cast sat down with Entertainment Weekly. Naturally, they asked Sarah about the reboot. She told them that she had nothing to share, but if she had her way, there would be a storyline involving a flash mob.
This potential Scrubs storyline is just what the doctor ordered. No, literally. Sarah Chalke, who starred as Dr. Elliot Reid across all nine seasons of the celebrated medical sitcom, is sharing the toe-tapping plot point that she’d love to see included in the show’s forthcoming reboot.
‘I can’t tease any plot details because I don’t know any because it’s all so new,” Chalke explains while visiting Entertainment Weekly’s San Diego Comic-Con video suite for Rick and Morty. “Someone just asked me if I have any requests for the plots and I just said, ‘Flash mob. I wanna be in the flash mob.’ So, I don’t know how that works into the storyline, but I think there’s a way.”
After hearing Chalke’s dream storyline, her Rick and Morty costars — Chris Parnell, Ian Cardoni, Harry Belden, and Spencer Grammer — immediately jump up from their seats and begin busting a move.
“You wanted a flash mob?” Parnell, who plays Jerry, jokes. “Here we go, guys.”
But, in true Rick and Morty fashion, the well-intentioned gesture quickly goes off the rails.
“No, that’s not how we practiced it, you guys!” Belden shouts. “It was step left, then turn. Alright. Alright. Cut! Let’s go again!”
Still, Chalke can’t help but be charmed by their efforts.
“Not the flash mob I was dreaming of,” she teases, before turning back to her costars. “You guys are trying to make my dreams come true? This is why I love all of them so much.”
I really thought that they’d already done a flash mob storyline during the show’s original run. I had to look it up to confirm that they hadn’t! That is something that would have been very on-brand for them. Are flash mobs still a thing? If not, then it would also be pretty on-brand for both Elliot and J.D. to want to do something that’s both cringe and a decade out of date. That said, I’d totally watch it if they could also get Parnell and the rest of the Rick and Morty gang on there to finish the dance they started to put together on stage.
Like Sarah said, there really isn’t much known about potential plot lines but according to Variety, the reboot’s official logline is ”JD (Braff) & Turk (Faison) scrub in together for the first time in a long time- medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way.” That sounds very generic. I liked the idea of J.D., Turk, and Elliot being mentors in the same way that Dr. Cox and Dr. Kelso were for them. I really hope that it focuses more on the newer doctors.
Here’s the video. I cued it up, but just in case, it starts at 4:58:26:
I will give it a chance. Not fond of reboots but I did like the original so much that I will give it a go.
Barf. I rewatched some old episodes with my older kids and couldn’t believe how misogynistic, homophobic, racist, and full of straight up sexual harassment it was. I’m gonna pass.
Scrubs is my favorite show of all time and I’m so excited for this. Hopefully it is like seasons 1-8 and not that last scenes where the focus switched to new interns. The entire heart of the show is the OG. I get the have to have new characters but I hope they are minimal.
