Several years back, Michael B. Jordan became attached to yet another remake of The Thomas Crown Affair. It was interesting, to me, that he was interested in the property and I honestly thought it could do something really good with it. As it turns out, MBJ is not only starring as Thomas Crown, he’s directing the film, which is in production now. He cast Taylor Russell in the major female role, Thomas Crown’s insurance investigator/love interest. Only Taylor was let go two weeks ago, early in the production. At first, the excuse was “creative differences,” a catch-all which can mean anything under the sun. Days later, the role was recast, with Adria Arjona taking up where Taylor Russell left off. So, just a major role being recast early in the production, or was there something else going on? Per Deuxmoi:
When news broke that Michael B. Jordan and Taylor Russell would be starring in the upcoming remake of “The Thomas Crown Affair,” social media erupted with praise. Single, attractive, and chemistry that would be off the charts (or, museum walls IYKYK) – what’s not to love?! However, fans and industry insiders were led to believe that more than just on-screen sparks were flying between them. Deuxmoi has now received intel from an exclusive source, indicating that there was trouble in paradise.
Back in March, Deuxmoi reported about a fan sighting of Russell and Jordan at a Marylebone, London matcha cafe. Although the spotting appeared innocuous at the time, something now tells us the vibes did not remain platonic. Just over a week ago, Russell departed from the iconic reprisal due to so-called “creative differences.”
But was that explanation simply used as an excuse for underlying, mismatched feelings between the two co-stars?
As discussed in Deux/U’s July 24th episode, film journalist Jeff Sneider spoke on a podcast about the drama and potential “lingering resentment on people’s side.” Per Sneider, “when you’re making a movie, people get close…maybe too close. That could spill over into things.” He urged listeners to do the math, as “it’s a tale as old as time in Hollywood.”
One of Deuxmoi’s trusted sources confirmed such suspicions. Before filming began in foggy London Town, the source alleged that “something had happened between Taylor and Michael.” Once the cameras started rolling, “the relationship was [already] strained.” It wasn’t a sudden “breakup” mid-production, but rather a relationship that was already fractured, with filming merely serving as the final catalyst for her realization. It is unclear what the “strain” on Russell and Jordan’s relationship was exactly, though whatever it was, Russell allegedly could not handle the environment for long.
Adding another layer to the story is the buzz surrounding the movie itself. Insiders are hinting that the project might not be living up to expectations, and that it has some truly “reeeallly big shoes to fill.” It’s been speculated that this potential artistic disappointment may have also factored into her decision to bolt, opting out before the final product could potentially impact her burgeoning career. Although we are still left with some plot holes, the source intimated that Russell may have predicted “the movie was going in a specific creative direction” that did not align for her, professionally speaking. Rising star (and Jason Momoa’s girlfriend) Adria Arjona has since taken Russell’s spot in the art heist film.
I think the argument of “Taylor had qualms that the film would bomb, that’s why she got out of there” kind of falls apart pretty quickly. While Taylor is well-known by people who follow gossip, she’s not really a “star” or a well-known actress in general. This would have been huge, the co-lead in a big film opposite one of the biggest stars of his generation. No, I think it’s far more likely that MBJ hooked up with his leading lady and then fired her because their personal situation was strained. Speaking of, this gossip is also making the rounds. Messy messy messy.
Michael B. Jordan recast Taylor Russell in 'The Thomas Crown Affair' due to the actress reportedly shooting one day, during which time her performance "was not improving" throughout the course of the day.
Adria Arjona has since taken over the role.

Jeff Sneider isn’t credible. All he does is speculate, without any factual basis. Deuxmoi picking that up and acting like it’s real insider information is on par for them.
I’m not the biggest MBJ fan, but framing this situation as him being bitter about a (romantic) relationship not going where he thought it would go, is icky. He’s always been professional and nothing in his track record indicates that he would act like that.
Conspiracy time: Hollywood has been salty since Sinners outperformed everyone’s expectations (critically AND financially) and the writers, who were counting every dollar the movie made against its budget, had to eat crow…
I’m all with you on the lack of credible reporting or sources here, but let’s not pretend that MBJ didn’t decide to ride hard for Jonathan Majors well after all of the damning information was out. That doesn’t say great things about his respect for women.
If it’s a hit then cool. If it’s not then cool. Aside from Sinners I don’t f*ck with Mike — his support of woman abuser Jonathan Majors solidified my dislike of him. We’ll know or not, if Taylor felt uncomfortable then she has the right to remove herself from that project.
All I know is that it left a bad taste for it to be leaked that Taylor Russel’s performance was so bad on day one that she had to be let go. Like, I doubt that. So it gross for that to be put out there imo. No idea what actually happened but that part was not cool.
@Jais I see Taylor in fashion stuff, what roles or show is she known for?
She got good reviews for Bones and All and Waves.
She did three years on the tv Lost in Space. But most of her roles are in smaller films. This would’ve been her highest visibility role.
Didn’t follow Russell’s personal life or fashion, but she IS a good actor who really can act.
Given how MJB could have gotten burned and his proximity to the Jonathen Majors mess. No, he wasn’t involved but the allegations and fallout came during CReed promotion, I don’t see him sh*tting where he eats. The recasting is about something else.
I loved the version with Renee Russo and Pierce Brosnan. It was smart and charming and they had great chemistry. Not a huge MBJ fan but I’m interested in how this one will turn out.
What’s going to kill this movie is the unequal leads. You can’t have a star and an unknown. The whole point of the movie is that it’s about a battle of equals. That he’s also the director further unbalances things. I’m sure this actress is fantastic, but you have to wonder why he didn’t cast the name above the title strong Black actress the role calls for.
If the answer was that he cast his girlfriend and fired her when she broke up with her, there needs to be stink on everyone involved in the film except these two actresses.
I have loved Michael B. Jordan ever since Fruitvale station (technically before if we account for his tv work) and have supported his projects frequently. I was initially excited about a Thomas Crown Affair as the remake is one of my favorite movies. However this movie will not do well, because people in his target market first and foremost won’t support it. To bump a Black actress and then cast an unknown is silly. The internet consensus was that if he had to bump her, cast a powerhouse like Nicole Beharie, Tessa Thompson, or someone similar, heck maybe even a Janelle Monae.
I’m sure the actress cast is lovely but the way things have played out already have left a sour taste in a lot of Black women’s mouths (the core of who he needs for this film to do well). The last thing the film needs is tossing aside a Black woman optics, whatever the truth.
I hear what you’re saying but I think we forgot how much women center men. There’s almost always an excuse made for them ( mainly white men & some women) when they are well liked. Mike is well liked. Especially after he dated Lori Harvey — a Black woman. It was said that his preference was white women before they dated, so his being with her bought a very amount of equity. But we’ll see what happens with his reimagining of TTCA.
I don’t disagree, and you make great points. There was also a lot of underlying talk that Lori Harvey was a PR relationship to mask his preference for non-black women. Especially given her dating history (like Diddy seriously?!). It wasn’t a good look that his name kept being mentioned throughout the Selling sunset/Selling NY series, and one Bree (Nick Cannon baby momma) alluded to his bedroom skills being subpar, which means he moves sloppy. He does have a lot of goodwill in the Black community, and he is a phenomenal actor but Shannon Sharpe thought he was on top of the world and now he is just another cautionary tale. He has crossed over into mainstream fame yes, but Denzel Washington is the blueprint of understanding that no matter how far you cross over, you can’t forget the base that made you famous.
Ooooh Janelle Monae. That would’ve been amazing.
Isn’t that illegal and basis of a lawsuit- when your boss has a sexual relationship with a subordinate and then fires her?
He seems very self absorbed to in his career. Lori Harvey definitely dumped his ass because she had her own thing going
I don’t care about anything this man is in. He supports Jonathan Majors
Thank you! Why are people still caping for him so hard?? He’s trash by association.
I don’t think MBJ is incapable of this behavior. But I honestly thought Taylor was miscast when I first heard news of the role. She is beautiful and interesting and a talented actress. But she doesn’t read “femme fatale” to me, or that she would be the equivalent to MBJ in what is a cat-and-mouse dynamic in the film. She still reads really young, especially next to MBJ, and is very petite, whereas in the most recent version you really feel that Pierce Brosnan has met his match in Rene Russo… and I just don’t see it with Taylor. It wouldn’t surprise me if they didn’t realize until filming began than Taylor was reading too young and innocent as an adversary/femme fatale for MBJ. Maybe it really was a case of miscasting?
That’s what I think. I doubt MBJ, coming off great Sinners buzz and making his directorial debut would’ve set himself up for a lawsuit. Especially in this Lively/Baldoni era of really bad pr. He may be a lot of things but dumb about his career isn’t one of them.
bqm – he directed Creed III; Thomas Crowne is not his directorial debut.
Thank you @Kali my thoughts exactly!!! Taylor was miscast from day one. She’s sooooooooooo. petite. And young looking, can be confused for a 19 year old, not a woman in her 30s.
That character has to match him wit for wit, experience to experience. And also physically. I actually thought they would cast someone older than MBJ, my mind went straight to Sanaa Lathan!
Or pull up a tv actress.
Adria will do fine, she comes off very sexy on screen from that Zoe Kravitz movie. She doesn’t have any time to prepare though.
