Roger Goodell: We would love to have Taylor Swift play the Halftime Show

For a decade, Pepsi was the major sponsor of the Super Bowl Halftime Show. In that time – 2012-2022 – there were always conversations about whether Taylor Swift should do the Halftime Show. But the reason why she never really considered it or got the call was because of her long-time association and sponsorship relationship with Coke/Diet Coke. It’s just a fun little quirk of history. Anyway, in 2023, Apple Music took over as the main sponsor of the Halftime Show, and obviously, Roc Nation and Jay-Z are now the ones organizing and producing the Halftime Shows. So will Taylor Swift ever be the Halftime headliner? Possibly, says Roger Goodell.

Will Taylor Swift perform during the halftime show of the next Super Bowl? NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wouldn’t say as much, but he certainly didn’t rule out the possibility when asked about it Sept. 3 on TODAY.

“We would always love to have Taylor play. She is a special, special talent, and obviously she would be welcome at any time,” Goodell said.

“Is it in the works?” Savannah Guthrie asked.

“I can’t tell you anything about it,” Goodell replied.

“Is it a maybe?” followed up Savannah. “It’s a maybe,” he said.

Craig Melvin then asked when people could expect to hear an announcement.

“I’m waiting on my friend Jay-Z,” Goodell joked in response. “It’s in his hands. I’m waiting for the smoke to come out.” (Jay-Z and his company, Roc Nation, produce the Super Bowl halftime shows.)

[From Today]

I think Roc Nation has been doing a spectacular job with the Halftime shows, by the way. It was such a smart corporate decision by the NFL to hand that off to Jay-Z and his team. Taylor is tight with Beyonce and Jay-Z as well – I can imagine that Taylor has probably already had some general conversations, but nothing has been nailed down. Even if Taylor wants to do it, I doubt she would go for the next Super Bowl. She just wants to be a football fan in the stands at her fiance’s games, you know?

I absolutely believe that the NFL would love to have her perform at a halftime show. who wouldn’t?

That said, I don’t think she’ll do it until Kelce retires. If she is announced now (its early to announce it but lets pretend), then every single time there is a call in the Chiefs’ favor that is questionable, people are going to say its rigged. I mean there are already some serious allegations of ref favoritism when it comes to the Chiefs, especially in the playoffs. And its not just bad apples or people being pissy about the Chiefs. when you watch enough football you can spot the biases and the bad calls pretty easily.

If Taylor is playing the SB this year, everything the Chiefs do, especially in the playoffs, will be tainted through the lens of “its rigged.”

and honestly the halftime show is a ton of work. I can see her kind of wanting to just enjoy the season and spend time promoting her new album and then maybe next year after Travis retires taking it on with him there to support her but not as a player.

but I’ve been wrong about these things before.

co-sign to everything you said, and I’m even a Chiefs fan.

I believe, too (may have been mentioned downthread) that the halftime entertainment costs are primarily on the artist’s business/team because it is seen as a marketing gig. NFL and maybe Roc Nation do not cover much of the cost for these performances at all!

I can see why the NFL would want her, but think they need/want her more than she would need/want them, especially this year after her recent personal, professional highs.

There will be other years. Good point as well about not doing it while TK is still playing. And about her choosing to just be a fan for the season, not making it work by performing.

  3. McMe says:

She’s doing it. She dropped a lot of Easter eggs on the podcast with Travis. “Thinking about sourdough 60% of the time” was basically a confirmation.

      MCME,

I agree- there were a lot of Easter eggs about the coming Super Bowl in San Francisco. I’m pretty certain she’s going to do it.

I concur. I think she enjoys being a fan. I think she enjoys everything not being about her when she’s with Travis and this is his thing.

The only thing that makes me think she would do it- is now that she loves football, maybe she would want to.
But i don’t think it would be while Travis is still playing.

My favorite was the Dr. Dre with all those adjacent acts.
But i also liked the Katy Perry one because i think she understood the spectacle of it.

When i was a teen? we started skipping it, and they had like a live In Living Color episode, and some years you could switch and watch Beavis and Butthead during whatever lame halftime show was going.

The Super Bowl is in San Francisco this year. Do you know what legendary band that is coming off a wildly successful tour is from San Fran? Metallica. And they’re interested!

Lately we’ve had pop, R&B, and rap. Let’s have some rock please. It’s our turn. Let us rock out. Metallica will understand the assignment and put on one hell of a show.

I 100 percent agree on Metallica!! I live in Vegas and the rumors are rampant they’ll play a residency at The Sphere, too. I would love a Metallica Half Time!

I’m a huge swiftie and I hope she doesn’t do the Super Bowl until after Travis retires. For all of the reasons already mentioned, but I just would be really surprised because it would tread on Travis’ most likely final season. It would pull focus from him and I feel like she’s enjoying being a supportive partner in the stands. Maybe if the Chiefs don’t make it to the game? But they plan that way in advance.

Also she doesn’t need to perform at the SB. She won’t make any money doing it, and that’s not even her fan base (brads and chads don’t want her there, remember?). TV views yes, but again, she doesn’t need it.

    But who knows!
