Drew Barrymore made her cohosts smell her feet on the air

It was just last week that Martha Stewart returned to the scene of the crime The Drew Barrymore Show, her first appearance in nearly a year after host Drew pulled her usual maneuver of petting a guest without permission. Last year’s moment went viral because Martha playfully yet emphatically pushed Drew away. During last week’s visit, Martha set the record straight, diplomatically stating that she didn’t have any beef with Drew, she simply didn’t like being petted “on television.” (I feel like “…by YOU” was the way Martha ended that sentence in her head.) So that was last week, and I really thought we were making progress in the personal space discourse. Fool, thy name is Kismet. Here’s the good news: we’re not talking about Drew invading the space of one of her guests! Here’s the rub: instead, Drew made her cohosts Sunny Anderson and Ross Matthews smell her feet. They were doing a segment on how often you should wash your feet and Drew just whipped her puppies out. Why? To prove they didn’t smell. Maybe not the feet, but something sure stinks.

Drew Barrymore is standing 10 toes down on the assertion that her feet don’t smell.

The Drew Barrymore Show host, 50, was joined by co-hosts Sunny Anderson and Ross Matthews during her Tuesday, Oct. 7 episode as the trio decided to “check a box of cleanliness” and discuss foot care.

During the segment, and before Anderson brought up a report about foot care experts “begging people to prioritize washing their feet,” she told Barrymore that her feet smelled “divine” after smelling them last year.

Naturally, Barrymore wanted to confirm again.

“Drew does not have stinky feet. She’s like a smell-good girl,” Matthews, 46, said, as Barrymore lifted her foot from under the desk and gave it a sniff herself. Moments later, Anderson, 50, decided to “double check” and leaned her head over. Matthews then got up from his seat and did the same.

“It smells like a whole lot of nothing,” Anderson said, before Barrymore reiterated: “There’s no scent there whatsoever. And believe me, I have other issues. Nobody escapes issues.”

After the sniff test, Anderson let the audience weigh in on how often they wash their feet following talk of an apparent 2019 Self magazine report. Apparently, 87% of Barrymore viewers in the crowd said they wash their feet daily, while 10% said they wash their feet every week, 1% said they wash them once a month and another 2% said they never wash them.

Barrymore then asked her audience to take accountability and raise their hands if they never wash their feet, before a woman named Annie defended her choice.

“I have a shower and the few times I tried to put soap on my feet, I almost died and slipped and fell,” the host joked in response.

In relation to the petting, is this new breach of conduct a lateral move or full blown regression? Please weigh in, because I’m stymied. I mean, I don’t think either Sunny or Ross were scandalized by this; they’re each big personalities and know what they signed up for. And I love how Sunny is willing to exclaim that Drew’s feet smell “divine”… after she smelled them ONCE a whole ass year ago! This isn’t something where if you hit the mark once you’re then set ever after; foot hygiene is a daily maintenance issue (and don’t forget in between the toes!). That was the point of the dang news they were reporting on!! (Also: what on earth was the context of Sunny smelling Drew’s feet last year? I blame Ross for not following up on that crumb!) As for Drew’s argument that soapy feet lead to slipping and falling, sigh. For one thing, they make these newfangled doohickeys called BATH MATS that go into the shower for a sturdier grip. But let’s be real here — isn’t it highly probable that Drew has a big enough shower to fit a bench in?

Okay that’s just gross. don’t shove your feet into someone’s face (without permission I guess lol). ever.

  2. MrsBanjo says:

    She’s exhausting

  3. Sara says:

Ewww gross. What is wrong with drew? You don’t shove your nasty(and all feet are nasty by definition) feet in someone elses face unless they ask you to

  4. Noo says:

Several decades ago I worked with a male coworker who was so grossed out by feet he would never look down in the summer for fear of seeing a semi-naked foot in a sandal. He was viscerally repulsed by feet. I think of him today.

Was that me?? Ugh I hate the sight of feet, they look like useless mutated hands. Disclaimer: I do still perform basic grooming on my feet because I hate the thought of someone else seeing/touching them even more.

  5. Nanny to the Rescue says:

She did this and her guest wasn’t Quentin Tarantino? What a missed opportunity for both of them!

    And yes, I agree, gross.

  6. ariel says:

Literally- someone could say, i certainly wouldn’t ask anyone to smell my feet- but i swear they smell great- and then smell them yourself.
I know she is eccentric (and god knows she earned that) but – no.
Unacceptable behavior from essentially a person who is your BOSS.

  7. Jayna says:

I can’t watch her show. The few times I try to catch a guest I’m interested in I am just so turned off by how she pushes herself on them. I am uncomfortable watching it play out as she moves in so close to them and touches them far too much or pets them. She acknowledges it’s a problem but keeps doing it.

  8. Yup, Me says:

Drew Barrymore reminds me of many white woman I have encountered in yoga and granola spaces, who, upon being told to back up, give someone space or stop touching people, insisted “I’m just a touchy feely person!”

Part of what makes it so uncomfortable to watch Drew is that she seems to make her guests uncomfortable when she’s leaning into their faces, inhaling their words from their lungs while stroking their hands and arms in front of cameras and a live audience.

  9. Mslove says:

Adult feet are gross. Now, baby feet, that’s a different story. Babies have cute feet and toes, they’re so tiny and adorable.

  10. Normades says:

One of my biggest pet peeves are people who wear flip flops in the airport. That is just unsanitary and gross for both the airport and the flip flop wearer.
Also I know people don’t like sit down shower tubs but I love mine. Makes feet washing easy. I don’t get pedicures but I do take care of my feet which is probably more people should do (wash, clip nails, moisturize). They don’t smell but I wouldn’t shove them in someone’s face

  11. Normades says:

I think foot health and hygiene is something people overlook. The bottoms of your feet are the same as your hands. When I lived in a big city I stopped wearing flat sandals because I’d come back home after a day and they would be dirt stained even underneath. So even in the hottest part of the year I started wearing covered shoes or something with more of a heel.

  12. Bqm says:

The story doesn’t say Drew made them smell her feet though. It says sunny “decided to double check for herself and leaned her head over. Matthew’s then got up from his seat and did the same.”

  13. Oh come on. says:

I thought Ronny Chieng was kidding when he said white people don’t wash their feet … is that a thing people are doing? And not being ostracized for?

  14. Libra says:

I’ve stopped watching her. She has boundary issues that are uncomfortable to watch.
