Donald Trump hosted a Great-Gatsby-themed party as Americans lost SNAP benefits

On November 1st, SNAP benefits ran out for tens of millions of Americans, many of them disabled, seniors and/or children. This is all because of the government shutdown, which has now been happening for more than a month. Democrats, who are in the minority in both chambers of Congress, are holding the line because the Republicans’ continuing resolution would gut the ACA and throw millions of people off of their health care plans and/or increase premiums tenfold. On Halloween, a federal judge in Rhode Island ordered the Department of Agriculture to distribute emergency funds for SNAP benefits, funds which are set aside just for this kind of situation. I suspect the Trump administration will simply ignore the judge’s order. Well, something else happened on Halloween: Donald Trump hosted a Great Gatsby-themed Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago. The historic parallels are paralleling.

President Donald Trump celebrated Halloween with a Great Gatsby-themed party as millions of Americans prepared to lose their SNAP benefits amid the government shutdown.

On Friday, Oct. 31, Trump, 79, hosted a Halloween party inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic 1925 novel at his Palm Beach, Fla., estate, Mar-a-Lago. The president sat with Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the Roaring ’20s bash, which was complete with feathers and flapper dresses, photos show.

The official theme of the lavish event was The Great Gatsby, the Roaring ’20s and “a little party never killed nobody,” according to reports from White House correspondents Danny Kemp and Kellie Meyer of AFP News Agency and NewsNation, respectively.

Footage of the event shared by Meyer on X shows Trump and Rubio, 54, smiling and chatting at a table with other guests. At a certain point in the evening, all members of the press were ordered to leave Mar-a-Lago, Meyer reported.

Trump hosted guests at his Palm Beach property as millions of Americans braced to lose their federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, sometimes referred to as “food stamps,” the following day amid the ongoing government shutdown. Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture warned that there would not be enough funding for the 42 million Americans who rely on SNAP benefits to receive their money on Saturday, Nov. 1. (The program provides one in eight people in the U.S. with money to buy food.)

Trump spent Nov. 1 golfing at his Palm Beach golf club, Meyer reported on X.

Per the Daily Beast, attendees of the party included “top members of his administration, political allies, celebrities, and loyal supporters of the MAGA movement, all decked out in elaborate Jazz Age costumes and surrounded by Prohibition-era decor.” There was an abundant dessert table, and a young woman in a sparkly leotard gyrated in a huge champagne glass. As F. Scott wrote, “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.”

Absolutely vulgar..hope everyone that can donates to their local food banks and or World Kitchen because this government doesn’t care if people/children starve and that is heartbreaking.

    • ClammanderJen says:

I started donating to food banks and other charities during COVID, when I realized two things: first, how fortunate I was, and second, how little interest our government seemed to have in fulfilling the basic social responsibilities it was created for.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration is perfectly happy to use human suffering as leverage to achieve its goals — a textbook example of a punishment strategy. Which is also illegal under human rights conventions.

F*ck these people. Someone unleash a plague into one of their gross parties.

“Someone unleash a plague into one of their gross parties.”

Seeing that “a little party never killed anyone” quote above, I immediately thought of Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death. So, yeah. And then real life examples of “little parties” in 2020, 2021 that DID in fact kill people – like the wedding receptions in Maine that directly led to at least 150 COVID infections and the COVID deaths of at least seven people*, including people who’d not been at the wedding, but been staying isolated or in care homes but were infected by people who’d been at the wedding.

        https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/coronavirus-death-toll-maine-wedding-rises-5-over-175-infected-n1240138

        * and that’s before you count the deaths likely caused by COVID indirectly – ie deaths from pneumonia or from what we now know about significant increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and other serious heath issues following COVID infections.

And there will still be maga and far leftist who say that MVP Harris and this deviant clown are the same. Fuck off.

  3. Mireille says:

The Supreme Court gave this foul POS immunity for all his actions as president. I have high hopes for The Hague and ICC. When the time comes, he and his entire administration brought to justice for their crimes against their own people, immigrants, the boats they blew out of international waters and funding/advocating for genocide in the ME. Crimes against humanity. Sooner than later before his term is up. That’s all I got for now. I am beyond enraged from looking at these photos.

    • SIde Eye says:

Yes Mireille! Where is The Hague and ICC? I want them all charged today! The sad thing is by the time they act Trump will be long gone, but I hope everyone else faces the music.

    • Nic919 says:

The U.S. doesn’t recognize the ICC so that won’t happen. However, the Democrats need to push for a Nuremberg type situation and purge the monsters from power.

  4. HillaryIsAlwaysRight says:

The last time the Democrats signed on to a continuing resolution to keep the government open, they did so because the Republicans promised to negotiate with them moving forward. That didn’t happen, so the Democrats in the Senate are not getting fooled again. The Republicans can hand out our tax dollars to corporations and the ultrawealthy, but they don’t give a sh*t if people’s health care premiums increase, and children go hungry. The roaring 20’s is the perfect metaphor for the excess some people are getting to experience, now that their tax cuts are permanent. But I’m thinking about France in 1789. I hope the election results after tomorrow give Republicans the incentive they need to get back to work for US.

  5. Brassy Rebel says:

Decadence will eventually kill this regime. Hoping it comes sooner rather than later.

  6. Calliope says:

It’s so on the nose. It feels like a deliberate choice to rub our noses in it. And/or of course they see Tom and Daisy as aspirational.

Why do I feel like we paid for all of this? There’s no way they’d use their own money.

Slightly surprised – and pleased – that People is covering this with the SNAP comparison.

  7. BeanieBean says:

It did not end well for Tom & Daisy, nor Gatsby. It won’t end well for these people.
