The Sussexes made a $50K donation to Masaka Kids ahead of the documentary

When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex signed a new deal with Netflix this year, they announced that they stepped in as producers for the documentary Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within. “Masaka Kids” is an informal dance troupe in Uganda, where they teach kids how to dance and then make cute dance videos which are hugely popular on YouTube. The Sussexes stepped in as producers to show the real story behind the YouTube videos. The trailer came out this week:

The documentary – or documentary short? – comes out on December 9. In advance of the premiere, Harry and Meghan announced a $50,000 donation to Masaka Kids Africana, via their Archewell Foundation. I thought H&M stepping in as producers was so smart for them and for Archewell, and I’m glad they’re doing more to highlight these kids in every way. I also hope the Sussexes work more in the documentary field as producers.

I enjoyed the trailer for the documentary and I’m looking forward to watching it. I’ve always enjoyed seeing these young people’s videos and how talented they are. I hadn’t known any of their backstories so it’s great that the world will be able to see how they’ve used music and dance to survive difficult and emotional situations. To know that some of these children had lost one or both parents was heartbreaking to hear, especially at such young ages. Their smiling faces just prove that you never know what anyone is experiencing behind their smiles. I hope this documentary and an increase of donations help these children and many more in that community.

I agree with you Kaiser that I hope that the Sussexes continue to do more documentaries like this. I really enjoyed all of the ones they’ve put out.
