The Sussexes ‘have plenty of money’ & they’re working on five Netflix projects

Over the weekend, an absolutely shocking article was published in a British outlet about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Why was it shocking? Because A) it was actually quite positive and B) it was written by a former royal rota reporter, Richard Palmer, who has always been anti-Sussex. Of course, Palmer had to pay the Sussex tax, which in this case means “framing everything through the false prism of royal talking points.” Those talking points: something something Sandringham Summit, no part-time royals; William hates Harry & Meghan, who want nothing more than reconciliation; and all traveling and philanthropic work = royal work. Some surprising highlights from “Harry and Meghan were banned from being part-time royals. They’re doing it anyway.”

Thriving Sussexes: Six years after Megxit, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have defied predictions of their demise in self-imposed exile and are thriving, according to insiders. The late Queen refused them permission to become half-in, half-out royals but in their own way Harry and Meghan have found a hybrid existence that works for them, to the consternation of their many critics.

Harry & Meghan look William & Kate look bad: In Australia, where [the Sussexes’] first visit for seven years has raised questions about when the Prince and Princess of Wales are going to accept an invitation from the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, to tour the country, Harry is expected to spend time with military veterans, while Meghan is due to speak at a £1,400 per ticket three-day women-only retreat in Sydney.

What’s wrong about Meghan headlining a girls’ retreat? The latter has prompted comparisons with Sarah Ferguson’s various ventures down the years. But even hardened critics, such as the royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, have struggled to explain what exactly is wrong with it. “I’m sure her fans will absolutely love it, but it just doesn’t feel very A-list or very royal,” Fitzwilliams said.

The rifts between the Sussexes & Windsors: Much to Harry’s frustration, he and Meghan remain estranged from most of the Royal Family. King Charles has shown some signs of wanting to mend fences but he and Queen Camilla are thought unlikely to see the Sussexes and their children, Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 4, if their proposed state visit to the United States goes ahead at the end of next month. Even worse, the chances of reconciliation with the Prince and Princess of Wales look as far away as ever. The two brothers and their wives are still not thought to be speaking and William has moved on, according to some inside his circle.

Coulda woulda shoulda: When they reflect upon the rift, perhaps all sides might acknowledge privately that they could have done things differently, but there is little forgiveness inside the Royal Household for what is generally regarded as Harry and Meghan’s public criticism and betrayal of the institution.

The Sussexes’ money: Despite having to foot a huge security bill and the costs of running a seven-acre estate, the couples’s finances are bolstered by Harry’s inheritance from his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales, and from the Queen Mother, as well as their commercial earnings. In September, the couple gave $500,000 (£370,000) to projects supporting children from Gaza and Ukraine. The same month during a visit to Nottingham, Harry announced he was giving £1.1m to BBC Children in Need to support organisations helping young people affected by violence. “They have plenty of money,” said one source, who described how they have overcome the end of their five-year deal with Netflix that was reported to be worth $100m (£74m).

Their first-look deal with Netflix: “That’s just the way Netflix has gone. It isn’t really doing those kind of deals any longer,” the same source said. The couple are currently working on five different projects with Netflix, as well as a list of other programmes with rival streamers and television channels. “Some of them are first draft, some of them are with lawyers, some of them are contract secured,” the source said.

Harry’s lawsuit against the Mail: If he loses it could be embarrassing but it will not hit him in the pocket because he is insured. “This has never been about money. If this was only ever about money he wouldn’t have done it,” a source close to him said. “This has always been about accountability, truth, and justice.”

Invictus Birmingham: Richard Fitzwilliams believes that the decision to host the Invictus Games in Birmingham in July 2027 puts pressure for the King, as head of the armed forces, to attend an international event for military personnel and veterans. “It puts Charles in a very difficult position. He may have to make a decision that William opposes,” he said.

No path back!! William had once counted on Harry’s support for his future reign. But any value the Sussexes’ glamour and activism might have offered the monarchy as a welcome distraction from the Epstein affair is overshadowed by the complications of their commercial life. For now, courtiers see no path back to royal life.

“Despite having to foot a huge security bill and the costs of running a seven-acre estate…” LMAO. The constant pocket-watching combined with a complete ignorance of their actual finances is always hilarious to me. These people are always beating their heads against the wall and wailing “but their $100 million contract didn’t get renewed!” Yes but where do you think that initial $100 million went? Do they honestly believe Harry & Meghan don’t know how to save and invest? Not to mention, Harry made millions (if not tens of millions) from Spare. And Meghan’s As Ever had a fantastic first year. And they’ve both invested in other businesses. I believe this: “They have plenty of money.” But they were supposed to be broke! Harry was supposed to be broke and divorced and come crawling back to the UK to be his brother’s wingman, waaaaaah. The six-year anniversary of the Sussexes’ final “working royal” days came and went and even royal reporters are begrudgingly admitting that Harry & Meghan are wealthy, happy and free.

  1. Well for starters the Sussexes are NOT DOING ROYAL WORK. The private Sussexes are doing what they want and work for their charities!! Yes they are EARNING money all on their own and they are not taxpayer funded! Peg the jealous incandescent can take their titles (not) and piss and moan about the Sussexes all he wants but it won’t change anything! The Sussexes will continue to do what they are doing now and Peg cant stop them!!

    • Swaz says:

The Sussexes wealth is really triggering the Windsors 😁. WILLIAM AND KATE ARE MIDDLE AGE FAILURES WITH A MEDIA THATS TRYING TO PROP THEM UP 🥱

  2. Dee(2) says:

I can’t believe it’s taken this long for someone in the British media to finally admit that people that are broke aren’t giving away millions of dollars. I also think that they have put them in a box as being the next Andrew and Fergie and bad with money that the idea that they aren’t, and would save and invest for a rainy day really hadn’t occurred to them.

They are so used to the royals being grifters, and spending money as if it comes off of a printing press, (which for them in a way it does from the taxpayers) that the fact that everyone doesn’t spend their money as if they don’t have to worry about where it’s coming from is foreign.

This is one of the royal reporting ecosystems biggest blind spots . They put people in a box, based off the role they need them to be and despite all evidence to the contrary they refuse to adjust.

Also, it amuses me that 6 years later they still write things as if Meghan and Harry are doing penance and trying to figure out a way to come back. And Richard Fitzwilliams describing something as not being very ” royal” when they have literally just perp walked a prince is ridiculous. Their cognitive dissonance on who these people are and who they believe them to be never ceases to amaze me.

I can’t believe someone is putting it out there that the head of the armed forces is “feeling pressure” and “it puts him in a difficult position” to attend an international event for military personnel and veterans, one that’s previously been attended by senior government officials, NATO reps, etc. And, that Charles may have to buck William if he decides to go. Even considering this is supposedly a quote from Mr. Donkey Sanctuary himself, these people are idiots to confirm the king would hesitate to support his country’s servicemen and veterans (even though that’s been very obvious from his past pitiful behavior).

      • Lover says:

It’s even more pathetic that Charles should hesitate to support Invictus when it’s his own son who founded it. That should make him proud! He should be extra motivated to go because his son is involved, not less. The pettiness and cruelty of this family knows no bounds.

  3. Amy Bee says:

The press always omit that Harry’s book was mega successful. Is it jealousy why they refuse to mention the book? At least Richard Palmer admits that the press expected Harry and Meghan to fail.

    • Graphinya Heather says:

And it’s not like it’s now out of print or not selling. Obviously it’s not selling like hot cakes like it did when it was released, but Spare is still selling copies.

      • Ciotog says:

I thought Harry confirmed that the Queen Mother didn’t leave him any money? He also said that Diana’s money was for his children, not him. This is just a subtle way of asserting that Harry is living off royal money. He’s not.

  4. Henny Penny says:

William has moved on? Oh, really?

  5. Me at home says:

The iNewspaper seems refreshingly out from under the Murdoch and Rothermere thumbs. I don’t know much about them, but Wikipedia says it’s published by something called the Daily Mail (!) General Trust.

Very weird. This begs many questions. Did Palmer always think more highly of the Sussexes, even sympathetically, but while in the Rota he was forced to toe the palace line? Or has Palmer had a Road to Damascus moment about the Sussexes? And has Andrew forced any other rats to see the same lightbulb? And how long will The iNewspaper continue to operate seemingly independently of the palaces, at least for the occasional piece like this one?

    • Jais says:

Palmer would randomly let a few things slip about William every now and then. And then he would get burned by KP. So idk if he thinks so highly of the Sussexes but I bet he might just secretly not think much of William.

      • Becks1 says:

This is what I think. he was/is mostly critical of the Sussexes but he’s definitely not a W&K fan. He’s the one who ran the quote about no European wars from William and was then forced to walk it back, he was super bitter about that.

He got laid off from the Express a few years ago and has been freelancing since then. He’s one that I keep an eye on to write a book about what is really going on with W&K. I’m sure he knows the truth.

    • Blujfly says:

Palmer was the closest thing to anti W&K there is until Harry started suing papers and complaining about the media. Then he went very hard against the Sussexes. And he’s always been a sneak.

  6. samipup says:

Every time I see that polo photo my eye goes straight to the loosely hanging girth on the western saddle of the woman carrying the flag!

  7. one of the marys says:

As mentioned in a previous comment about cognitive dissonance, for me the example is the persistent cantering of the royal family in all perspectives. In the mean time Meghan never mentions them, has thoroughly ghosted them, has completely left their orbit. But oh, what does William want, what might Charles do, will they ever be welcomed back, what a dilemma!! All this agonizing when they have no agency anymore.

  8. Chrissie T says:

Harry was always a saver and careful with his money. He’s the opposite of Andrew who was always broke and living beyond his means. There are several examples of his attitude to money in Spare, he’s shopping for bargains when he could be borrowing against his inheritance. When they are looking to move out of KP and he keeps rejecting houses that are too big and cost too much to maintain. I think H&M are lucky that they seem on the same page financially, neither being particularly extravagant but they live a rich life. Finally their commercial success is a problem for William. He’s a control freak and cannot control Harry with money which is what the institution has always done. I’d imagine Harry is looking at the Andrew mess and is grateful he got out when he did.

    • Beth says:

Why do they never mention Harry’s job as CIO at BetterUp from 2021 (very well paid, apparently)? It’s been five years now. Or his VC investing?

      • Ciotog says:

Because they want to make it seem like he’s living off his royal money rather than his own.

    • Dee(2) says:

Financial control/abuse is definitely how they planned to keep Harry in line, and him being thrifty and not like Andrew is just another one of the things that ended up being to his benefit in the long run.

It also explains why they spend so much time trying to prevent them from doing humanitarian trips, trying to ruin any deals that they have by making them unpalatable to do business with, why the media does more investigative journalism into the tax records of an author Meghan likes than William’s duchy records, and why they release their flying monkeys on social media to harass anyone that compliments them or does business with them.

Meghan said it herself, financial independence gives you autonomy.

  9. Becks1 says:

Honestly we have no idea how much money Harry has from Spare alone. If he earned what has been reported, and invests it well, he’s set for life. And that’s without taking into account all their other projects and investments.

While the wallet watching is getting old, it is weirdly refreshing to see a royal reporter actually quoting someone about how Netflix has changed how it makes deals (so H&M were NEVER going to get that same deal again), and how they’re doing fine money-wise. Disappointing for the british press for sure, but hey, could have been a little nicer to them.

And interesting that this is confirming that William does not want Charles anywhere near Invictus, even though its an event generally attended by heads of state and government leaders.

  10. Mads says:

I’m certain that I read a couple of years ago that the Sussexes are investors in an ethical fund company, as in partners and not solely having the company handle their portfolio management. Anyway, they’re very wealthy; Harry easily made double digit millions from Spare, low ball $30 million, and their joint wealth before Netflix and Spotify was close to $20 million plus his salary from Better Up. I’m sure they also received bonuses from their Netflix documentary on top of the headline contract figure.

Harry has been successful in all but one of his legal cases and I suspect he is still ahead financially, even with the costs in relation to his failed case against the UK Home Office.

It’s all projection and wishful thinking from the usual suspects. It grinds their gears that Harry and Meghan are successful and financially secure.

    • windyriver says:

Also, Clevr seems to be doing quite well. IIRC from the podcast, wasn’t Meghan one of their initial investors?

  11. ChillinginDC says:

When it was revealed how much money she made from jam I think they all realized that them being broke wasn’t a thing anymore. Them constantly pocket watching them is insane. I think it drives them crazy they didn’t run back to the UK and take the abuse.

  12. QuiteContrary says:

“But even hardened critics, such as the royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, have struggled to explain what exactly is wrong with (the girls’ retreat).’

That’s because there’s nothing wrong with Meghan leading that retreat. It totally fits with her ethos of supporting girls and women.

Poor rota. They’re running out of things to criticize the Sussexes for.

  13. Hypocrisy says:

I just want to know when the Sussex’s ever once said that they wanted to return to the firm to be “working” royals? Prince Harry has stated that he would like a relationship with his father and for his family to know his children and to be safe when visiting or staying in the UK never anything about returning to their former employer.
It absolutely drives me insane when they write an article based off from a very provable lie.. the rota need to reach the acceptance stage, it’s time.

  14. YankeeDoodles says:

There was one article that came out in the blind panic of Sussexit, before the rota had scrambled to put together a narrative — like a Greek chorus — to lament their fate, which they deployed to beat the public into submission, to their betters in the royal family, those selfless champions of decency. LOL. And it was spectacularly revealing: “they’d like to strike their own deals, go out on their own, and keep more of their own money. In other words, they’ll aim to take back control.” This was the slogan that drove the Brexit campaign. Take back control. And the comparisons between leaving the EU and leaving the royal family were made — immediately — by a British paper. And yet…. The cognitive dissonance crept back in, and crushed that insight before it could bloom. Pity.

  15. Jay says:

Of course Charles should feel obligated to attend the Invictus games in Birmingham – he is the head of state, he represents the armed forces, and it’s an international event with a ton of attention. When Birmingham won the games it was assumed that Charles would attend whether his eldest son likes it or not.

Charles is the king at the moment, and unless he wants people to think that he’s a monarch in name only, or too sick to be on the throne, he must go. He cannot pretend that he has other plans or arrange to be out of the country for something that has been planned for so long. Goodness knows they could use the resulting good press.

Now, knowing Charles, he’ll probably dither endlessly and change his mind five times between now and next year and arrive at a compromise that pleases no one. Like he’ll attend, but only for part of the opening ceremony and he’ll only wear his second tier dress uniform and not shake Harry’s hand, only a salute or whatever.

  16. Beckett says:

“William had once counted on Harry’s support for his future reign.”
In the heir’s mind, Harry was NEVER supposed to have ANY agency.
Imagine a family business where the adult descendants of the founder are obliged to work there, are not allowed to leave and seek their own path, where the second son is allowed to work only as support to the first son.
Imagine always being that person, having to seek permission for anything, to be entirely dependant on the whims and moods of another.
    How soul-crushing it must be…

  17. Fina says:

So let’s say that only 20 percent of their Netflix and Spotify deals really landed in their pockets (likely more), then that’s already 25-30 Mio Dollar. Then you have Spare where he reportedly got an advance of 25 million dollar if I remember correctly. Then the settlement with the Sun, which was also in the millions. Plus maybe inheritance from Diana. Let’s say they have 60 million, and that is conservative. If they invest well, and I am sure they do, they get at the very least 5 percent interest per year, rather more. So that is enough to cover their running costs including security if bower is correct and they amount to 3 million a year. This does not even include income from speaking engagements, Better Up and As Ever. So yes they are well off. If you are rich and don’t have crazy spending patterns the world is set up in a way that your wealth increases….
