Here are some photos from the LA premiere of Animals, a film cowritten, directed by and starring Ben Affleck. I’m including pics of Ben, Kerry Washington, Matt Damon and Matt’s wife Luciana. Kerry’s dress is from Carolina Herrera! In Animals, Ben plays an LA mayoral candidate and Kerry plays his wife. Their son is kidnapped and held for ransom. You get the idea. One of the big headlines about the film is about Ben’s use of AI as a director. Earlier this year, we learned that Ben founded an AI company in 2022 and he sold it to Netflix in March in a massive, nine-figure deal.
After unloading his AI firm on Netflix earlier this year, Ben Affleck is showing off the tech in action with his latest project. The 2x Oscar winner recently revealed that he “did use” artificial intelligence “for lots of things” in the making of Animals, which he co-wrote, directed and starred in, premiering Oct. 9 in select theaters and on Netflix.
“I used [AI] for lots of things in that movie,” he revealed at a Q&A for Bloomberg Screentime. “I’m a little bit hesitant to point out what they are or even talk about it because, in my business, we’re trying to foster the illusion of reality, right? It’s sort of like if you went to a magic show and the magician walked out and said, ‘Just before I start, I want you to know there’s another bunny under here. This guy’s a plant.’ It sort of ruins it, right?”
Affleck continued, “But yes, we did use it. And in fact, I thought it was a good example because it’s a very human movie. It’s not in space, it doesn’t have visual effects, but it allowed us to move in some cases more quickly, really mostly in post-production, to do things that otherwise we wouldn’t have been able to do.”
Co-written by Affleck, Connor O. McIntyre and Billy Ray, Animals stars Affleck as Los Angeles mayoral candidate Mark Kimball, whose son is kidnapped, giving him and wife Abigail (Kerry Washington) a few hours to get their hands dirty and come up with the ransom money.
Affleck’s latest Netflix film comes after the streamer bought his AI firm InterPositive in March for $587 million. He quietly founded the company in 2022 and served as CEO, taking on a senior advisor role after Netflix’s acquisition.
I’m reminded of the fact that The Brutalist’s use of AI was seen as so controversial, there was a lot of conversation about whether the AI use should or would hamper the film’s Oscar chances. Less than two years later, and Ben is playing fast and loose with where exactly he used AI in his derivative Netflix film. *sigh*

Yea…naw 🤬
Rather than paying people and supporting our industry we used AI.
Got it.
Oh my goodness. They used computer algorithms to cut down on the budget! What will we ever do? I miss the good old days of movies like Forrest Gump, where they used computers… To make things that haven’t been done before. I’m especially upset at the prospect of this tech allowing independent filmmakers to do things they’d normally never be able to afford to do. I’m only supporting luddites and over budget movies from now on.
I’m especially upset that… Ummm, what am I upset about again? Them using their own footage with algorithms to cut down on costs and enhance backgrounds. How dare them!
This reminds me of all the jobs dinosaur makers lost as the Jurassic films used more and more CGI. Oh, the humanity!
Yeah in all of those examples you used, someone human did it. Ben himself is pointing out he used AI (not a human) to do it. So instead of maybe 10 people who needed to be used for special effects it got it down to 0. Oh the humanity indeed. Considering the amount of jobs that people wanted AI to take over so that they didn’t have to pay people, I am always going to say nope to this. Plus the entire amount of waste it produces.
Hi, Ben!
It’s ironic his production company is about making sure all crew and cast are compensated fairly for their work, but then he doesn’t mind using technology that deprives people of employment.
Yep. I rolled my eyes at him.
All he’s talking about is using AI to adjust the lighting, shot angle etc post production and it’s only training on that film’s dailies. A lot about AI is scary but less reshoots in Hollywood movies isn’t a concern
Is Ben AI in these photos? Why does he look like a wax version of himself?
Wondering same.
Ben is an astute businessman who made big profits? I guess all the comments about his alleged dumbness were….pretty dumb. He’s a very good director and I’ll be watching this.
Who said Ben was dumb? He’s always come across as very intelligent when being interviewed. I wasn’t sure of his education but flicked to wiki, he had a tough upbringing and still made it to college though didn’t stay. His mother was Harvard educated but his father was mostly unemployed and drank all day. I know he’s messy but I’ve always had a soft spot for him. He’s found his niche in writing and directing. He also has a good relationship with JG and his kids which is the most important thing and speaks volumes.
Every thread had comments about his alleged lack of brain power. On what basis, I have no idea.
