Elizabeth Olsen, the sister who can act, in ‘Martha Marcy May Marlene’ trailer

One of the breakout actresses of this year’s Sundance Film Festival was Elizabeth Olsen (the 21-year old sister of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen), who received much praise for her performance in Martha Marcy May Marlene, which earned the Best Director prize for debut helmer Sean Durkin. In the film, Elizabeth plays a former cult member who breaks away but suffers psychological trauma as an enduring after effect and cannot integrate herself back into society because she’s unable to separate her dreams from her memories. Just from the trailer, this looks to be an extremely creepy thriller that not only looks to prominently showcase Olsen but also stars Hugh Dancy, Sarah Paulson, and the always-effective John Hawkes as the cult leader. See if you can watch this new trailer without getting chills:

Of course, when Elizabeth became the toast of Sundance not only for this movie but also for Silent House, the National Enquirer penned a story about how the Olsen twins were completely jealous of Elizabeth’s acting success, but a source close to the twins told Gossip Cop that the Enquirer’s story was completely ridiculous and that the twins are very close to Elizabeth. Indeed, the twins actually named their Elizabeth and james clothing label for their two other siblings, so I imagine that they’d be nothing but thrilled with their little sister’s success. Also, Elizabeth really looks to have inherited the twins’ boho-chic fashion sense. Martha Marcy May Marlene releases by way of Fox Searchlight on October 7.

I thought she was really pretty until I saw the last picture.

  2. Kiki says:

wow. the girls all resemble one another….and i’m not saying that’s good or bad…

  3. Sumodo1 says:

Yeah, that last pic was “scroll-down fug” but she can act and the movie looks like a winner.

  4. Lisa Turtle says:

It helps that Elizabeth seems to be of an average height. Mary-Kate is like 4’11” and Ashley is like 5’1″ – very short. Most actresses who play “leading lady” roles are between 5’5″ and 5’11” – on the taller end of normal.

Its better, visually, when the male & female leads are only 1-3 inches apart in height. Having an extremely small female actress, who is extremely famous for a role she played as a child, its going to be hard for the audience to distinguish the actress from the memory of her as a child. I saw the Wackness recently, Mary-Kate plays a teenage druggie who has a sex scene with Ben Kingsley. No naked bits were shown, and I was happy with that, because Mary-Kate seemed like a preteen. She’s so small, and thin, and underdeveloped, and she has those big wide-set eyes of a child. To me, both girls will always seem like children.

  5. Celia says:

the last picture just shows, she’s a true olsen girl. : D

  6. PrettyLights says:

She’s very pretty and looks like a good actress, I am definitely going to watch this movie. Great trailer!

  7. kgq says:

    looks like a great film

  8. Marytere says:

    Fugly dress!!

  9. FluffyElmo says:

So I’m a guy and not exactly into fashion…but what the hell, are those boots directly attached to the leather pants like booties?

  10. RocketMerry says:

Interesting face. Reminds me a lot of her sisters but also a lot of Maggie Gyllenhaal.

  11. ghoulish_moose says:

Wow, Olsen mummy and daddy can only produce identicle looking offspring =)

They look so so similar. Even Mary-Kate and Ashley aren’t identicle twins. They’re fraternal. I couldn’t believe it when I learned that!

  12. tanya says:

I really want to see this movie.

  13. esblondie says:

@FluffyElmo – I’m female and I still have no bloody clue what is going on there either.

  14. The Other Katherine says:

What’s up with the boots-pleather-jeggings abomination? I don’t get it. How would you put it on?

    I’M SO CONFUSED!

  15. RobN says:

Why does this entire family seem to go out of its way to dress like homeless people? Why is the concept of wearing something flattering so completely alien to them?

  16. kate says:

    strong alexis dziena vibes anyone??

  17. junipergreen says:

That last picture is unfortunate, but the girl is gorgeous. Go to imbd and watch an interview with her.

  18. Maritza says:

I love thrillers, this one looks good. I think Elizabeth is the pretty one although her sense of fashion is the same as her sisters.

  19. TeeTee says:

This looks like it’s gonna be a good movie!!

she’s pretty, except the last pic, LOL

I want to see this movie.

  20. cam says:

she reminds me more of maggie gyllenhaal than any of the olsen twins, in looks, voice and acting style (all based on just this trailer tho)

  21. Rio says:

I think I see a pants-edge, low on the boot. The side seam of the pants is leading into the heel-stitch of the boot, which is creating the illusion of booted pants.
I THINK. Hell, it could be one solid…what would you even call that? Bants? Phoes?

  22. ctkat1 says:

Since the twins are actually fraternal, all three of the girls technically share the same amount of DNA- which would explain why all 3 look so, so similar.

Considering that the twins are both pretty damn successful with their fashion thing, and richer than anyone could ever really comprehend, and seems less interested in the whole “acting” thing, I don’t think there is jealousy there.

Just from the trailer and the reviews, it seems that Elizabeth has some real acting talent. I’m very interested in seeing this film.

  23. gobo says:

@RocketMerry; That is precisely what i was about to say. She’s like an Olsen-Maggie hybrid, with a lot of the fuggy fashion while also being quite captivating.

  24. girl says:

She could totally pass for Fionna Apple.

  25. Hakura says:

@KelBear“I thought she was really pretty until I saw the last picture.”

ITA xD What do you wanna bet that ‘dress’ was designed by her sisters? It has that awful ‘potato-sack’ quality that so many of their pieces do.

@CtKat1“Considering that the twins are both pretty damn successful with their fashion thing, and richer than anyone could ever really comprehend, and seems less interested in the whole “acting” thing, I don’t think there is jealousy there.”

My thoughts exactly. MK & A have already had an immensely successful acting career, & if they were truly interested in continuing with it, I’m certain they could land roles without too much trouble. They have their own huge successful business, I’m sure they’re nothing but thrilled for their sister.

  26. Ben says:

Awww. It’s kind of super adorable that she dresses like her older sisters.

  27. Micki says:

A question: why can’t a dress be floaty and without a special form? I prefer such dresses in summer much more than the tight high-lycra numbers of Kardashians. Too many people that don’t have the body for them wear them anyway, I’m afraid I’d get eye cancer sometimes.

  28. islandwalker says:

You have to attribute her “fashion” to the influence of her sisters. I very much doubt that they are jealous as they have stated that their interest is fashion and not acting though they like to dabble in it. I am sure they wish success on their sister.

As for Lisa’s comment that actresses must be of “average height” to be successful-
Natalie Portman Height is 5′ 3″
    Scarlett Johansonn is 5′ 3″
    Reese Witherspoon is 5′ 1.5″
Salma hayek is 5′ 2″… the list goes on but why bother.

The movie looks REALLY good and intriguing. Will definitely see it when it comes around. More power to her. She just needs to ditch her sisters “famous” fug fashion!

  29. Hakura says:

Floaty summery dresses can be done well, but this isn’t an example of it. It really does look like a potato sack, formless to the point of losing her body lines completely. It being floor length also creates the weird image of old timey ‘victorian style’ nightgowns. Not attractive.

  30. normades says:

Mila Kunis is really small too. Luckily there is no shortage of short actors.

  31. Hakura says:

Re: Actresses heights – I definitely believe women can get away with being below average height much easier than men can. But that’s not to say there aren’t actors who are shorter, but still get leading man roles. *coughTOMCRUISEcough*

Tiny women are often considered ‘cute’ for that quality. (I’m 5’1, myself.
