Mariska Hargitay adopts a son six months after adopting a daughter

Wow, Mariska Hargitay is baby-crazy! People Magazine confirms that Mariska and her husband Peter Hermann have adopted for the second time, welcoming their third child into their family. Mariska and Peter have a biological son, August, who is five years old, and they just adopted daughter Amaya six months ago. Their second adoption was for a little boy who they’ve named Andrew (one of my favorite boy names!). People Magazine only identifies Andrew as being born “over the summer.” I think Amaya must be about six or seven months old now, and judging from the photo of Mariska with Amaya and Andrew, Andrew looks very, very small.

When Mariska Hargitay welcomed her daughter Amaya Josephine six months ago, she started thinking about adopting another child down the line.

She never imagined the new addition would be right around the corner.

Within a week of processing their paperwork for the second time, Hargitay, 47, and her husband Peter Hermann brought home a son, Andrew Nicolas Hargitay Hermann, who was born over the summer.

“We never in a million year thought it would happen this quickly, but something inside of us knew that this was right, and we said, ‘Yes, yes, yes!’” says Hargitay, who is also mom to son August, 5.

“We knew this was our guy. Everything about it felt right. It felt divinely right.”

Two babies may be a handful, but the Law & Order: SVU actress — who will continue working four days a week — says Andrew and Amaya have already bonded.

“They’ll lie in the crib together, and she’ll hold his hand and put her arm around him,” says Hargitay. “She’s already so protective of him.”

[From People]

Wow, they got another baby WITHIN A WEEK. At first I thought that maybe Mariska and Peter had pursued adoptions at several different agencies, and then they were just thrilled that two babies came up for adoption, but it sounds like they used the same agency for both, right? I guess the agency had already thoroughly vetted Mariska and Peter, so the second adoption was a lot faster.

Incidentally, Viola Davis also adopted a little girl very recently too – Viola named her girl Genesis… are they going to call her “Genny”? Hmm…

  6. Addie says:

    Congrats to them.

As long as a loving couple can adopt children who are in need of good homes, I don’t really care how quick the adoption comes through, this is bringing a family together, why wait.

  7. Delta Juliet says:

All this adopting going on makes me smile 🙂 I love Mariska.

I love her. And August is such a beautiful little boy. Perfect combination of her and her husband.

but funny how people are when the adoptions are in the US. otherwise it is bad or baby collecting..

    hmmm

congrats to anyone for giving a child a home regardless of where the child is born.

  12. MollyB says:

  21. kay says:

I love her, I’m so happy for her and her family!

my little boy is named August too, it suits him perfectly, though we do get some odd looks.

  22. Obvious says:

August looks just like Mama. And that is great. She has amazing strong features that look good on both sexes. PS I love her!

  23. Jayna says:

It takes two years about to adopt domestically. I guess they started thinking it would be down the road . But the babies will have fun growing up together. Instant playmate. Great woman. I love her.

  24. Blue says:

That little girl is so chubby and cute. But her husband looks half dead. I love the name Genesis, it’s my daughter’s middle name 😀

  25. Jayna says:

@Lisa, I agree. I ignore all snarky posts about adoptions. Foreign or domestic I don’t care. It’s innocent babies or toddlers getting a loving home.

  26. pwal says:

Much love to Mariska, but it is curious how she doesn’t get criticized for not ‘spacing’ things out. A certain someone gets accused of being a baby collector just because she didn’t pump the brakes on an adoption after giving birth.

But cheers to those who won’t accuse her of adding to her family for publicity, or to keep her man, or any of the other c*cked up reasons haters will conjure up.

  27. The Bobster says:

#17. You’re right. The dirty nails are right out of “Lord of the Rings”.

  28. Cheyenne says:

Second adoption always takes less time because the home study is already complete and all they have to do is update it.

But six months from the first baby’s adoption? That is really pushing it. I don’t know of any agency that will place a second baby before the first child’s adoption is finalized.

  29. minnie says:

@ pwal, agree with everything you say!

  30. Viv says:

    Her husband looks really sleep-deprived

  31. Nini says:

#27 Something wrong with his knuckles as well, no?

#30 It won’t get better any time soon with two new babies! Poor him…

  32. Kim says:

Congrats to her & her husband! I just wish more people adopted older children.

  33. cerulean says:

Good for her. Love the babies. Maybe she wants them all to grow up together. She has the money so bless her.

  34. heynow says:

maybe pwal cuase we don’t hear so much from her often, I dunno
