Jennifer Garner lets her hair air-dry every day, doesn’t wear makeup most days

Jennifer Garner is featured in the current issue of Redbook. Isn’t that weird? It’s weird to me that Garner didn’t get the COVER, only an interview inside the magazine. It seems like Redbook readers would much prefer seeing Garner on the cover as opposed to Rebecca Romijn (no offense to Rebecca). In the Redbook interview, Garner is just talking about her personal “beauty secrets” which are all pretty basic. Jennifer is not known as a woman who looks amazing and chic off the red carpet – but that too is part of her appeal, part of her branding, part of her relatability. She’s the Hollywood Mom who dares to go out with her children without a professional blowout. Anyway, here are some quotes from Jennifer’s interview:

She’s a busy mother-of-three, so it’s unsurprising that Jennifer Garner has little time for make up. But the 41-year routinely looks incredible, so how does she do it?

‘Most days I don’t get around to makeup,’ she told the latest edition of Redbook magazine. ‘If I do, it’s pretty simple: concealer, blush, mascara and some lipcolor,’ the beauty added in the interview which accompanies her stunning cover shoot.

She then added: ‘If I’m really going for it, I might fill in my brows. Generally speaking, brows are underserved.’

And Jennifer also touched upon the fantastical and dramatic world of the red carpet.

‘The red carpet feels like a whole other side of me. What I wear during the day reflects utility. The red carpet is really fun,’ she revealed. ‘It’s show business, and we’re putting on a show. A lot of people are involved in the styling and my voice is one of the smaller ones in the mix.’

The Alfie star explained: ‘You should hear the conversations [in a dramatic voice] “I think it’s a smoky eye and a simple lip…” I make fun of everyone for being so invested.’

And she also dished on how she keeps those chestnut locks looking so shiny.

She wrote: ‘They taught me that letting my hair dry naturally – which is what I do every single day – is good for it…but it’s not always going to look good. Pulling out the blow-dryer and the curling iron really does make a difference. But to be perfectly honest, I don’t know even know where the hair dryer is in my house.’

But Garner’s gold star recommendation is all about the rays, she said: ‘Putting on SPF should be like brushing your teeth.’

[From The Mail]

I agree with her about air-drying your hair. Confession: I don’t even own a hair dryer. I let my hair air-dry every day, and I really don’t brush it that much either. My hair can get really oily really fast, so that’s my reasoning. I guess Jennifer’s reasoning is that she has three children and who wants to spend that extra time on your hair?

As for her brows… I’m looking through some photos of Jennifer, and I’ve never really noticed it before now, but she does have very thin, pale brows for a brunette. Maybe she over-plucks? Or maybe they’re just naturally thin and pale. God, I would hate to have to draw on my eyebrows. My issue is that I have TOO MUCH going on in the eyebrow area. The grass is always greener, etc.

By the way, I really don’t care one way or the other if Jennifer wears makeup in public or not. I don’t think she looks that bad/weird without makeup, and it’s her face, her choice, etc. My biggest problem with all of the candid shots of Jennifer and her children is how awful Jennifer’s casual clothes are. She has a collection of some of the most awful, unflattering jeans and trousers, and none of her flannel shirts or sweaters are attractive at all. I get that she’s just being a mom, whatever, we shouldn’t judge her. But is it that difficult for a celebrity woman to get her hands on some cute jeans, maybe some yoga pants and some t-shirts that fit?

There are pics of her in DM and she looks preggers.

    • Vera says:

Her stomach also looked this way 2+ months ago and you all were saying she was pregnant then!!!!

If she was, then her stomach would have grown and not stayed the exact same size.

Nevermind Ben saying no more kids and never mind the fact she is filming another film in September.

      • Linda says:

I specifically recall Ben saying he wanted another one.

      • Kira says:

ACTUALLY Linda….Ben most recently said they were done and 3 was enough!

“”…..when they asked about whether or not he’d be expanding his brood, ”That’s not going to happen. We’re in a really good place. Three is good! That’s enough!””

He seems to hardly spend time with them as it is now.

    • Jules says:

That is how my stomach looks after a meal!

She had this “baby” bump months ago and it is not getting bigger…..so no baby.

      • Nerd Alert says:

        +1

My vote is burrito baby. The oldest kid has crap all over her shirt in the pics so they probably just ate before the park.

Ironically, Jen’s wearing lipstick in those pics, though I don’t think she needs it.

      • UsedToBeLulu says:

My burrito baby bumps are way lower than that. Just sayin’.

      • Nerd Alert says:

Really? Because your stomach is just below your ribs, which should be higher than that lol

      • Sabrine says:

Ben does not want another baby. He said three is good and they’re done. Check out Celebrity Baby Scoop for his comments. It’s so ridiculous. She gets a bit of monthly bloat and now she’s pregnant. Give it a rest.

It is true. Her casual clothes are hideous. She wears those awful grey sweat tops that suck the color right out of her face and make her look tired and older than she is.

  2. Kiddo says:

She’s still pretty without make-up. Even with make-up, she still looks like herself, where with others they look drastically different. I can’t throw any shade on her. She seems like a normal person.

    • RocketMerry says:

      Completely agree.
I love her, she’s adorable. I usually watch every single movie she has out in theatres, that’s how much I like her.

    • Collar says:

I love her. As for her daily attire, she just said that she goes for “utility”. And odds are even at her most casual shes still way hotter than her critics.

    • mayamae says:

I like how she never pretends she’s naturally gorgeous when she’s on the red carpet. One time she was being praised on her dress, and she threw in she was wearing a gyrtle. Loved it. It kind of reminds me of when Jamie Lee Curtis let herself be photographed au natural since women tend to judge themselves against celebrities.

  3. Yellowshaba says:

I always side eye her daily attire, but i secretly love she goes for function over fashion

  4. teehee says:

Actually if you use very diluted shampoo, your har will be far less oily- regardless of blowdrying or not. I personally have a mini one, but use it only once a month or so or in the winter when I cant go out with damp hair. I also dont wear makeup– I buy it, in hopes of ‘treating myself’ but I never get around to wearing it unless I know I will be photographed and I want my eyes to stand out or something…. 🙂

  5. SmokeyBlues says:

I also do not own a hair dryer and I’ve had friends find out and say “whaaaaaaaaat?!!?” Like it’s some big deal. I let my curls do their thing.
I am, however, a slave to under eye concealer and a little mascara. When I skip these two things people literally ask me if I am sick and/or tired because no matter what I do I have tired looking Irish eyes. We all have our beauty necessities…

    • Melibea4ever says:

Same thing over here, can’t live without my concealer,it’s so annoying when people ask me if I’m sick, ugh! Can’t stand it!

    • cw says:

is tired looking eyes an Irish thing?

      • paranormalgirl says:

I don’t have tired looking eyes and I’m a born and bred Mayo girl. *shrugs*

Maybe the poster means that she has slightly down turned hooded eyes? There are some areas of Ireland where those eyes aren’t uncommon, just like big dark-blue eyes are prevalent in county Mayo.

    • Decloo says:

It’s “When Irish eyes are smiling….” not “when Irish eyes are tired…”

      • SmokeyBlues says:

About the Irish eyes, what I mean is that my skin is very pale and fair, and so the veins under the skin show easily. All the women on the Irish side of my family have this problem, you should see pics of my grandmother, she looks exhausted too!

  6. CC says:

I can believe it, in her candids she always looks clean but not made up.

  7. tracking says:

She looks better than most without makeup and done hair (such gorgeous skin). She doesn’t have great instincts for casual clothes, it’s true. More outfits like the second pic down would be great. One-two minutes for tinted moisturizer and lipstick would also be great. But it’s nice she’s comfortable enough to go without. The other extreme of moms made up to the nines just to pick up their kids from school is stranger imo.

  8. Anna says:

I actually think her skin/face look amazing for her age, probably because she goes totally makeup-free most of the time, and seems to have stayed away from plastic surgery. I guess the less you mess with it, esp at an early age, the more benefits you reap later on. But it takes someone very secure to do this.

    • marie says:

or someone who’s lazy (that’s me).. I have curly hair and have let it air dry since my early 20’s. I used to try to browbeat it into some sort of style but it was always off so finally I figured I would let my hair do what it does, and it looks a lot better.

Also, I prefer the extra 15 minutes of sleep opposed to getting up and putting on makeup. I’m lucky that I have a younger looking face though..

      • SamiHami says:

I could’ve written that post myself! 🙂 I finally decided to stop fighting a losing battle. And it turns out my hair really does look better without all the styling products/blow drying/curling irons trying to force it to do things it just doesn’t want to do.

      • Bodhi says:

Yup. I never do my hair or makeup because I need sleep WAY more than I need to look hot when I go to Target or the library

      • paranormalgirl says:

Yeah, I’ve given up the blow dryer and let my wild hair fly. I have curly red hair and I just basically let it do its think most of the time and wrestle it into a pony tail for work.

      • kim says:

It’s like you’re my hair and make up twin. I finger comb out my ringlets it the shower when the conditioners in and don’t even wash out thw conditioner. Easy and pretty. I moisturize my face.

    • Kim says:

Yeah she is really natural – not. With the amount of botox, filler, laser facials, peels, etc she has had im sure she feels ok without makeup (no makeup for her being concealer, foundation, powder, etc just not eye or lip makeup). And dont get me started on that fake trout pout!

      • another nina says:

I think her son has similar lips, so I’m not sure whether she got some work done. Although she definitely got a filler around the mouth to get rid of that aging thing – she had it very notable at the time of “Juno”.

  9. Tapioca says:

No mention of the lip injections?

    Still, I can’t fault her off-duty wardrobe.

    • emmie_a says:

I think her top lip is an implant so maybe she doesn’t need injections??

As for her clothing, she has talked before about how she has zero fashion sense — and it shows. But I like it on her because it shows how invested she is in her job as a mom. I roll my eyes at celebrity moms who say they are always running around w/their kids — but they are always seen wearing high heels and pencil skirts.

      • HappyMom says:

Meh-I’m invested in being a mom too-and I have 4 kids. You can still look cute, pulled together and casual.

      • emmie_a says:

HappyMom — I’m not saying it can’t be done, but as I said, Jennifer said she has ZERO fashion sense. And some people don’t care about clothes and fashion as much as others. I think she said she used to have a stylist put together cute and stylish everyday outfits for her but that wasn’t her main priority so she didn’t put time and effort into it. I love her honesty.

  10. LadyMTL says:

Kaiser, you sound like my long-lost twin. I don’t own a hairdryer either (I have curly hair that tends to frizz up if it even gets near one) and I have very generous eyebrows, lol.

As for Jennifer Garner, I don’t see an issue here. If she doesn’t want to wear a full face of makeup just to go grocery shopping, why should she? If I had her skin I’d never wear makeup either.

  11. Dawn says:

I air dry my hair as well. It is cooler in the summer to do so and my hair loves the break from the winter days that I can’t air dry.

  12. Katie says:

She didn’t need to state that. It’s pretty obvious she’s going for the harried mother look. She must be limited for grooming time, what with her burgeoning film career and all.

    • Shauna says:

Wow. So a woman comfortable in her own skin is now harried mother? I think it’s awesome that she’s more invested in being a mom than a showpiece.

  13. Tessa says:

I wish I could free myself from daily makeup, but I would feel like an ogre if I left the house completely bare faced. I’m young, have good skin and a pretty face, but it’s pretty deeply embedded in my psyche that I’m hideous without makeup. I can’t shake it, and I probably never will.

    • K says:

I used to be that way. I realized it was doing a number on my self-esteem, as well as my ability to manage time. Once I cut out the makeup, I felt free, and the boys didn’t complain.

    • Emily C. says:

You can shake it, but it will take some work.

Look at the men around you. Do they look like ogres without makeup? Do you think they need it to not look monstrous? Why do you think YOU need it when THEY don’t?

    • Mitch Buchanan Rocks! says:

Once you go makeup free you won’t be able to go back – also, if you give up make up at this time in your life, your skin will be much healthier when you get older – make up is full of chemicals and, as the old saying goes, what you put on you put in.

To clean the skin use witch hazel and a cotton pad or puff – the stuff works great and again no chemicals.

For natural blusher and lipstick use a beet root – cut a piece off and dab a bit on your cheeks, eyes and lips – the colour stays and no chemicals for your skin to absorb.

      • taxi says:

My grandmother & her sisters used beet juice as young women because only “hussies” wore rouge. I’ve never understood the distinction because the end result is the same, right? Tinted cheeks &lips.

      • mayamae says:

Not necessarily. I use Bare Minerals foundation which is chemical free with a natural spf.

    • gogoGorilla says:

That is exactly how I was when I was younger. Give yourself a break! Believe me, you don’t need to put all that stuff on.

It’s funny, the older I get, the less makeup I wear. I’ll put it on if we’re “going somewhere,” but if I’m just running around, I’ll fill in my eyebrows (ladies, this IS necessary!) and use a little tinted moisturizer on my nose, a little blush, and clear gloss. That’s it for me. Twenty years ago, it was a 30-minute process no matter where I was going. (And so unnecessary!)

  14. tracking says:

Ooh, per People, Garner will now represent Max Mara. So those daily around-the neighborhood pics should get more interesting! Should be a good match!

    • Mia 4S says:

And to go along with that announcement, there are new paparazzi shots of her out with the kids. What are the odds?!
      😉

  15. Jane says:

    …and this is news because????????

  16. Mel says:

She is naturally very pretty. But her everyday wardrobe is AWFUl! It’s like she purposefully wears the most unflattering clothes she can find. They are not even comfortable looking.

    • original me says:

she is always in some frumpy old sweater and unflattering jeans. it’s just maddening because she is naturally beautiful and has a nice figure. she could look fabu every day, instead of like a harried frump.

    • Cary says:

It is purposeful. It’s her schtick. She’s playing the part of a devoted wife and mom, so devoted she doesn’t have the time to dress well or wear makeup. It’s all very calculated to support her just-like-us image. And it works very well, based on the comments here.

  17. Barbara Owens-DeWitt says:

She’s in the grocery store with a gold-chain Chanel bag. Hmmmm-she’s just like us? I think not.

    • Annabelle says:

I have a Chanel bag and *gasp* have been known to take it into the grocery store. Having a nice handbag doesn’t make Jen out of touch. Seriously, most of the time she gets shade for looking too frumpy and not wearing enough nice things.

    • paranormalgirl says:

I wasn’t aware I had to leave my Chanel bag at home whilst out shopping.

  18. ADD says:

I really like her. The only issue I have is she could wear cuter casual clothes. I constantly see her shopping, so I’m not sure why she doesn’t? Also, I’m just curious, but how come nobody calls her out on her lip injections? Does she get a free pass because she’s so cute?

  19. Contrived says:

Yeah, and you look like sh*t when you don’t Jen.

  20. heidi says:

A breath of fresh air in the land of over-inflated(all facets including personalities) overrated ‘celebs’

  21. Joanna says:

She’s pretty without makeup. But she has such good features that she would look so pretty with five minutes of makeup. I don’t understand why she doesn’t put on a little. She could still rock the girl next door look and wear some cute comfortable clothes. Half the time she looks so plain. and she could look so good with a little effort.

  22. lisa says:

she should try a little concealer, mascara and gloss

still natural but sometimes in her daily pap pics, she looks sickly

  23. Micki says:

I own a hair dryer, completely useless now as I cut my hair pixie short.
When I had it longer than Jennifer’s it took HOURS to dry on its own. I’ve never had time for that.

I must admit I laughed through the whole article because I can relate.
The only difference is I look like a walking dead without make up. Not that I’m induced to do it on daily basis if I’m not working.
I had once full make up for a parents commettee dinner. The table went silent for 30 sec. The shock!

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

You don’t have to dry it at all? That must be so liberating..I’m very envious because it’s 96 and humid as heck out here-the last thing I want to touch is a hairdryer.

  24. cw says:

she really needs eye make up
    otherwise she just looks weird

  25. Dawn says:

So Enty is saying that without a doubt the Afflecks are expecting! I don’t know if we can believe it or not!

    • Ila says:

He is a fraud and makes most things up. Can’t believe there are idiots out there who read blind items and think they are real!

  26. Apsutter says:

She looks fantastic in that blue dress pic! I let my hair air dry too and almost never wear makeup in the summer. Make-up just seems like such a waste of time because I dont love putting it on and my bf never likes it if I wear too much either so it works out well for me lol

  27. mel says:

I always wear some makeup…not a lot but it makes me feel good to be put together. I never wore it when I was younger but now that I am in my late 40s I really feel the need to wear a little every day. Sometimes on here I feel there is a backlash against looking nice or put together…maybe its the southern girl in me…we like are makeup ya’all….:)

    • Emily C. says:

“Looking nice” has little to do with wearing makeup. It’s your own body, your own choice, your own personal taste, so do what you want. But my own personal taste is that everyone looks better without makeup unless they’re under the bright lights of stage or screen.

There’s no objective standard of beauty.

  28. nicegirl says:

Heck, it’s all a mask, right?

kudos to Ms Garner for her self acceptance

I think she looks lovely without makeup

what a nice way to raise young girls. my grandma was like Katy Perry, she had to “put on her face”.

my dad, however, hated it. he met a young Jodie Foster years ago, and attributes a rule he enforced in our household while I was growing up to her practice – “NEVER PAINT YOUR FACE UNLESS YOU ARE GETTING PAID”.

So, basically, if I am working, I paint. If not, I accept my human face mask and keep on keepin’ on.

Sometimes when I get to upset about ‘how I look’ I remember others who have severe scarring or other things maybe they cannot change about themselves physically and I think, how does it make them feel that I would think JGarner needs makeup to look decent?

  29. original me says:

in other news, that bougainvillia is eating her.

  30. Ryan says:

That headline, though. Is that really a story? I’ve never owned a hair dryer, and I only wear makeup if I go out at night. I’ve never thought it to be newsworthy.

  31. Bodhi says:

I think I own a hair dryer, but if I do, its been in the storage until for 2 years. I wear makeup when my husband & I got out, but thats a pretty rare occasion these days.

As I commented above, I need sleep WAY more than I need to look hot at Target or the library

  32. Sue says:

Without a doubt the most “normal” celebrity out there.

    • Veeee says:

There is nothing normal about being photographed by paps every single day of your life! Her kids are the most photographed kids in Hollywood. Sometimes multiple times a day in fact. So they are far from normal.

There are more famous Hollywood families that put an effort into protecting their kids from paps and live for months in LA without being seen.

If you do not want to be photographed, you won’t be.FACT

      • sandie says:

Then how do you explain why there have been no pictures of her or her kids for the past several weeks???

      • Veeee says:

Well Sandie, because they have not been in LA the past few weeks! She has been out of town filming.

As soon as they are back, the daily photo ops begin. Poor kids are overexposed. There are almost 7000 pics of Violet on Zimbio alone……

Where she was, there are no paps because there is no point in there being paps when celebs are not living there normally.

      • sandie says:

        Veeeee-
The paps are pretty resourceful and if their efforts result in cold hard cash, they will travel to butt fu*k nowhere to get pictures of celebrities. Garner has been photographed all over the country – boston, nyc, louisiana, the list goes on. Do you honestly think that a) paps only exist in LA, b) paps are averse to travelling when stalking their prey?? Get real.

      • Sandy says:

There many other celeb families, some even more famous than the Afflecks and they are rarely seen and live in L.A., compared to the Affleck children that are photographed every single day. There are ways to keep kids out of the spotlight and it has been proved by some celeb parents. Also, having your kids exposed to cameras every single day has to be harmful. I do not find Jennifer Garner attractive at all. She is average at best.

      • Veeee says:

Oh Sandie…..all those places you named have paps because lots of celebs live in NYC, lots of movies film in Boston and NOLA.

Jen was in Virginia and Cleavland. I never see pap pics from there.
Garner and her overexposed kids are not worth the trip, face it.

And great post Sandy. Jolie Pitts have been in LA most of the year, and are really never photographed. They actually put an effort into escaping the paps and months go by without pics.

      • Sandy says:

Yes, the Jolie-Pitts and even Suri Cruise can go days without being photographed and they live in L.A. and N.Y.C and they are much more famous than the Afflecks. They try to just shield their kids from paps by finding ways around places that paps are going to hang out. The paparazzi are stalkers and they know their daily routine, which includes coffee ten times a day.

  33. Kira says:

She had this “baby” bump way back in April.

    http://www.x17online.com/celebrities/ben_affleck/ben_affleck_jennifer_garner_track_meet_daughters_baby_bump_pregnant_photos_042913.php

She obviously has a belly, but not because she is pregnant.

  34. Lisa says:

Most… people don’t let their hair air dry?

  35. Emily C. says:

Regarding her clothes: it is not a woman’s job to be “attractive” at all times. It’s no one else’s business what she looks like when she’s not on the red carpet.

Blow-drying is bad for your hair, btw.

  36. A says:

I have pitch black eyebrows so I kinda would prefer paler ones because black (real black with no brown in it) eyebrows are a bit OTT, even for me who has a darker complexion. They just overpower the face. I have a good shape though but I’d prefer a darker brown to soften it up a little, black is harsh for most people.

  37. lucy2 says:

I usually air dry my hair too.
I had full makeup done for a wedding this weekend, and by the end of the night couldn’t wait to scrub it all off. I can’t imagine doing that all the time, like some of these celebs do, and some EVERY day. I’m lucky if I throw on a little mascara and lipgloss before work.

  38. Mew says:

I think her priorities are totally other than spending 90 minutes on her face daily and picking up the cute clothes just to please the world.

  39. Ginger says:

She is blessed with great hair. No way can I air dry and then walk out of the house without looking like a frizzy poodle mess. I have to pull it back and wear a hat if there’s no time to style. But I’m on the same page with her about weekend makeup…very minimal. I put out more effort for work and date night. She sounds so down to earth. I truly think she’s one of the prettier actresses in Hollywood because of that.

  40. homegrrl says:

I know we all want to be natural, but a gal can’t go all single mommy homely.
For years I was hair up no make up no highlights, sweat pants. Did I get laid in all those years?
    Noooooo.

I finally took an older friends advice, did the blonde, did a bit of makeup, and worked out till I fit into butt enhancing jeans again.

Am I getting laid now? Regularly. Nice try ladies, now go blow dry her hair

  41. Kristin says:

Ben and Jen were sitting right in front of us at a basketball game. She had no makeup on. She was breathtaking. It is rare when a woman looks the way she did. Effortless. She is a genuine beauty and I love how comfortable she is with herself. Great Mom too. They live a public life but to me what they have is real. Happy kids=Happy Mom and Dad.

  42. brumhildawayne says:

Do not like her. Phony as the day is long.

  43. Ange says:

I feel her on the eyebrow thing. Mine got burned off in a little kitchen accident when I was younger (thanks brother!) and never grew back properly. If I don’t colour those suckers in you wouldn’t know they were there, despite me being a brunette.

  44. anet says:

which is why she looks unattractive and dull.

  45. Tara says:

Aren’t yoga pants just the velour sweats of the 21st century? Don’t get why they’d be considered better than even the homeliest jeans.
