Alexa Chung’s biggest problem is all of the free champagne she receives

I still don’t really “get” Alexa Chung. She’s pretty, thin and “fashionable” and she dates guys in rock bands, and that’s all it takes for her to be a significant celebrity (in the UK?). I imagine she’s a bit like Kate Bosworth, except Bosworth actually did have an acting career at one point. But Alexa, The Bos and many of those women get into these cycles of just being famous for being professionally “cool” and “fashionable.” Alexa got press earlier this year because she was the alleged (or not so much) other woman in Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s marriage. Whatever happened there didn’t last and Chris and Alexa both moved on.

So, all of that combined is enough for Alexa to still earn fashion editorials, magazine covers and legitimate magazine profiles. Alexa’s latest is a video/interview she did with I-D Magazine. She was asked “What do you hate most about the fashion industry?” Her answer:

“Do you know what? I really hate champagne. And my least favorite part of fashion is that that’s the thing that they love to give out free at everything. I always wish whisky was associated with beautiful dresses because then I’d be having a much better time.”

As you can imagine, this has caused some side-eyes and claims that Alexa is so out of touch, she can only complain about the most idiotic #firstworldproblems ever. Boohoo, people are always handing me free glasses of champagne! IT’S SO GAUCHE, I think I’m going to die!

Alexa was aware of the criticism she received, and she tweeted a link to the Wiki definition of “champagne problem”. She also tweeted this:

So at least she has a sense of humor about her first world problems. God, why won’t people stop buying me prime rib? This is literally the worst thing that’s ever happened.

I want to like her, but then she opens her mouth and I’m not even sure anymore…

It’s great to have style, but it’s time the media stops putting these women on a pedestal just because of their clothes and who they are dating.

  2. Misprounced Name Dropper says:

She’s not the first talentless hack to trade on her looks.

    • SpookySpooks says:

Sje was a really good TV presenter and I think she writes for Vogue now. I also think this comment was a joke.

      • Misprounced Name Dropper says:

So you think she’s talented because you think she writes for Vogue? OK. I can’t argue with that.

she’s one of the few celebs i’m SURE has an eating disorder.

    • bobbie says:

i’m kinda sure by champagne problem she means cocaine problem…

    • FLORC says:

She kind of looks healthier than she has in ages in these pics. The coke pproblem has been openly talked about for a long time too.

It might just be might experiences, but ladies who seem really thin and openly talk about how they love whiskey (not scotch) prefer it because it suppresses your desire to eat. Champagne with the bubbles increases.
Also, among a few business friends whiskey is prefered and they had to learn how to drink it to fit in with their promoted crowd. It’s a rare and desired quality to see women drink and enjoy whiskey for a few wealthier crowds.

She tends not to mention “Popworld” anymore, maybe because she was so awful on it. The most significant thing she’s done career wise, was to hook up with a musician who was popular with the critics and the public. 2007 was a good year for Alexa,,,,,,,,,

I thought her response tweet was funny. At least she can laugh at herself.

    • mimif says:

I laughed too. And I totally empathize with her about the bubbly, I have the same problem, except I’m the one paying for it.

      • Bridget says:

One of life’s great rules is that you can never have too much champagne. Especially if its free.

That’s right after “never get involved in a land war in Asia” and “never bet against a Sicilian when death is on the line”

      • mimif says:

        As you wish, Bridget.😀

I kinda want that gray dress she’s wearing in the last picture, even though it would look like seven kinds of hell on me.

  7. snowflake says:

wow, people are upset b/c she complained about champagne? wow! I guess you can’t complain when you’re a celeb.

  8. Snazzy says:

Alexa Chung’s biggest problem is that she’s Alexa Chung

  9. littlemissnaughty says:

It was a crazy question and she gave a funny answer. It was a joke. What was she supposed to do, bite the hand that feeds her? People need to calm down.

  10. khaveman says:

This made me chuckle. Good for her — I’d like to trade places and only worry about high fashion, being moderately well-known and pretty, and champagne.

  11. Ari says:

wow she has crazy eyes for days

  12. mkyarwood says:

    Creepy Mantis.

  13. manta says:

I would say she’s a little different from Bosworth in that high-end brands actually hire her to be their face/égérie. To me Bosworth is pal with fashion people but I couldn’t associate one major campaign with her used to actually sell products.

They may not be popular brands in the US or the UK but Lacoste and Longchamp picked her to rep their pricey items. In France, for the last couple of years,if you walked once in a shop that sells Lacoste or Longchamp or simply bought Elle or any fashion mag, her face (not necessarily her name) is familiar.
If they keep her, she must reach a certain target.

  14. poppy says:

certainly not the coke. now that would be biting the hand that feeds.

  15. Van Rijn says:

Alexa forever! It bums me out that so many people in the states don’t “get” Alexa Chung. She’s a goofy tomboy who writes and designs clothes (both quite well). What’s not to love??

    • CInderella says:

I’m in the states and I get her. I think she’s funny and charming. This may not be a great thing to say, but I can see why Chris Martin was drawn to her. They both seem to have the same sense of humor.

  16. Denise says:

Her constant presence in Vogue (UK) was one of the reasons I cancelled my subscription. Not that I had a hate-on for her, but the magazine seemed to be out of ideas and her contributions were too limited to warrant being featured in several issues in a row. And there were mostly actresses on the cover which also irks me. Actresses are not fashion. I don’t begrudge Alexa for having a career, and if that’s the worst thing she’s said, no big deal, then. At least she’s not saying things like ‘I’m not a feminist – I like men’.

    • Bridget says:

Hopefully she’s at least better than Plum Sykes, who is mind numbing. I can’t figure out why anyone would ever intentionally read her column.

  17. lrm says:

oh she was obviously joking-though serious…Can we not make jokes that we prefer whisky over champagne now? lol. Seriously, I thought it was fun and tongue in cheek OTT. But yea, her industry does champagne; she’s not into it. And she probably *has* to drink it in certain company-you know, prestigious guests, or a formal toast or something. So that’s why she is probably mentioning it-I thought it was funny and silly, not a ‘legit problem’ in her mind.

  18. Diana says:

These model with their GIANT heads and stick baby bodies… It’s so creepy.

  19. Marny says:

She was totally charming and having some fun. It was meant to be a light piece- give her a break!

  20. gilmore says:

She’s actually really, really funny and doesn’t understand why she’s an it girl either lol. But she’s smart to make a career out of it I guess. Either way people take her far too seriously, embrace the Chung she’s harmless and a riot when you do.

  21. The New Classic says:

I used to roll my eyes at this woman so hard but then I watched a makeup tutorial that she did online with a makeup artist friend of hers and now I get it. She seems witty, funny, and chill as hell. I’d love to go get a drink with her.

  22. Ella says:

Where is everyone’s sense of humor? She was making a joke, lighten up!
