Amal Clooney wears Missoni for her arrival in Japan: lovely or tragic?

wenn22525807

Here are some photos of George & Amal Clooney arriving in Japan for the Tokyo premiere of Tomorrowland. This is pretty standard – whenever a big star (think Angelina Jolie) arrives in Tokyo, they always get pap’d in a big way at the airport. Celebrities know that and they dress for the occasion. Which is why Amal looks so camera-ready in these photos. Her ensemble? The dress is Missoni Fall 2015, and I think it might be one of my favorite dresses that she’s ever worn. The wedges are Valentino.

Over the weekend, there were several big stories about how Amal is “scary skinny,” like this one at The Daily Mail. I’ve mostly been avoiding those stories because Amal is damned and condemned either way, basically. I side-eye the crap out of Amal and George’s general thirst and for setting up all of those pap strolls, but I have to give Amal some credit. She knew she was going to be a paparazzi target no matter what, and she’s made changes accordingly. She stopped smoking, she got better clothes, she started getting regular blowouts and yes, she’s lost weight. Her weight was normal and completely fine before, but with all of the new scrutiny coming her way, can you really blame her for losing weight? It happens to many, many women.

What else? George was talking about Amal again because he just can’t stop himself. He says that Good Night and Good Luck is her favorite film of Clooney’s filmography (which is apparently his favorite too) and “She does like Michael Clayton because there’s a lawyer in it. She didn’t like Gravity, she felt that I floated off in space a little too soon.” My favorite George Clooney movie? Out of Sight. I’ve seen it about a million times and I could watch it again right now. Clooney and Jennifer Lopez had crazy-hot chemistry (plus it’s a great story). Clooney also said: “I have someone who I can talk to about anything and someone who I care more about than I’ve cared about anybody.”

What’s tragic is Clooney’s Dad Jeans! All that money and he can’t buy a decent pair of pants!

Oh, and the t-shirt advertising his tequila is lame, too.

The dress is transcendently beautiful. But, I think you have to be super skinny to wear it, otherwise I think you might look like my granny’s crocheted blanket or maybe a cute accent pillow.

    • Beatrice says:

That was my first thought–you’d have to be super skinny to wear that bulky crochet look.

      • beautifulDay says:

I’m actually scared for how thin she looks. Anorexia is a disease I take very seriously, and she pains me lately. I honestly find this very concerning.

      • DrM says:

I agree with you beautifulDay she is looking very, very thin. And for those who say fast metabolism? As someone who works in health research I can tell you that it is not physiologically possible for a grown woman who has healthy eating habits to be that thin. That kind of extreme thinness is a direct result of some pretty severe calorie restriction or over exercising. Or both.

    • Jan Harf says:

Yep- those jeans made my eyes widen in horror.

    • Shiba says:

      Completely.
As thin as Amal is, that dress bulks her up to the point where her figure is undiscernable.
The colors are beautiful, but the knit much too heavy.
(Unless the market is size 0/2s who want to look larger – LOL.)

    • I actually think that this dress would look better on someone with a little more meat on her bones. The matrix of the crochet fabric would look nicer if it were more fitted, and a wrap-style dress really looks better on a womanly figure. I love the dress, just not on her.

  2. JudyK says:

Not an Amal “hater,” but, OMG, those UGLY, clunky shoes do not go with that dress.

    • Greek chic says:

They are too big for her feet.
I admire her hair though. So shiny and voluptuous.

    • Totes agree on the shoes. She is so channeling Jackie O – I wonder how long it will be before he finally enters politics?

Just saw Tomorrowland and was very disappointed. Great idea, first half fun, second half predictable, saccharine. Adored Hugh Laurie though (always have).

    • Mrs. Wellen Melon says:

Arrest who ever put her in those clompy shoes!

Little, strappy, flat Ferragamo sandals, Mrs. Clooney.

    • Angel says:

Seriously – those shoes. The dress is OK – much better than the yellow in other post.

    • Nikki L. says:

She seems to have an issue with that as a whole, I think she tries to take risks with her shoes but it ends up looking mismatched, a lot.

  3. Kasia says:

She is too skinny, but it doesn’t show on her face. Her face looks always pretty much the same.

  4. Lori says:

He needs to stop it with the tequilla shirts though. I remember one summer when the liquor store was giving away free t-shirts with every case of coors lite. A lot of dads got their summer wardrobe that way.

  5. NewWester says:

Was that last quote from George some shade towards his former girlfriends? Everyone is different why make comments like that? This constant validating by George of his marriage and life with Amal is getting boring and also suspicious. It is almost as if he is trying to prove something

    • cujokay says:

It’ already boring and I wish he would stop. He’s completely turned me off. His little pot shots at his exes is uncalled for and unattractive. It makes him seem childish.

    • HH says:

I know! He so badly wants to convince us that this relationship is different from his last. We get it George. That’s implied by the fact that you married her.

    • wiffie says:

I don’t think saying that was shade. Talking someone up isn’t always simultaneously talking someone else down.

And I guess I’m the only one that finds that dress totally bulky and hideous. I don’t think anyone could pull it off, even her, because it’s awful. But apparently I’m alone in this 😮

    • OhDear says:

RE: last quote: I don’t think it’s shade (or at least intentional shade), more of George trying to sell the greatest love story of all time.

I like Amal (and think she looks nice in that outfit), but the more George talks about her and their relationship, the more I’m inclined to believe the conspiracy theories around them.

  6. Fa says:

But angelina doesn’t dress up she always usual standard all black & simple & with her six kids wearing something simple for a long flight

  7. GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Once again, the woman dressed to the nines (love the dress) and the man looks like he’s taking out the garbage.

    • aga says:

His clothes are appropriate to this situation, I’m sure she changes hers after landing.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I’m not sure those jeans are appropriate for any situation.lol but I get what you mean.

    • snowflake says:

Ikr? same with KK and Kanye. i can’t stand that either.

      • lower-case deb says:

i remember Brad dressing like a bum that Angelina found on the streets, took pity, and invited to the premieres of her film World War Z… wait.. actually..

    • tracking says:

I agree. He’s a little long in the tooth for a tequila shirt and (dad) jeans. He looks ridiculous. She looks great, glamorous.

  8. JKL says:

Out of Sight is definitely far and away my favourite Clooney film. Just such a stylish and sexy film.

  9. cujokay says:

I don’t care for her “style”. She chooses odd pieces and pairings and she doesn’t look pulled together.

I don’t like the dress on her. I can’t really see the shoes so I’ll pass on them.

George’s pants & shoes have seen better days. Couldn’t he find a decent pair of jeans and shoes?

I weep because I remember when he was hot (10 years ago).

  10. Miss M says:

The dress is lovely, but i think the color doesn’t suit her.

As for George… I wonder if his fate would be different if he had sassy gay friend in his lige to say: “what? What? What are you doing?! You are a stupid b*tch!”

    • Gayle says:

Yes, George needs someone to call him a stupid bitch – that will solve everything. 🙂

      • Miss M says:

        🙂

Sassy gay friend would tell him to look at his life, look at his choices… I love watching sassy gay friend videos on youtube, hahaha

  11. Suzanne says:

OMG…am I missing something…but I think that dress is HORRID? It looks like a doilie (sp?) that belongs on the dining room table at her grandmother’s house. No…not flattering at all…and the clod hopper shoes do nothing to enhance it either. He wears the same shoes every time he’s photographed out and about…and I’m finally reaching the point that I’m sick of him bragging about his wife being the greatest thing on the planet. I am not a fan or Brad and Angelina but have you heard one word about them since they got married? Nope. These two…well, HIM, non stop gushing. She’s really NOT all that, George. I think he’s more in love with the fact that he thinks she makes him look all that more intelligent and successful to have landed HER. A major ego trip for both of them. She gets to dress up and play fashion model on shoots day after day…and he gets to brag about his British barrister wife. Win win…for both of them. Oh and he’s filthy rich..which didn’t hurt his chances of finding himself a wife with credentials. I hope this isn’t all a farce. I hope they really are smitten with each other.

    • sofia says:

I was going to write that my grandmother made me a top just like that dress and it was HORRIBLE. hahaha

      • lower-case deb says:

i hope it’s Vintage Missoni or something.
can’t believe someone still had the taste and will to knit the whole thing in 2015…

      • sofia says:

I was a child she she did that. By the way, you think just because a big fashion brand does something it’s automatically good?

    • snowflake says:

I think she is in love. He’s the type of guy that categorizes women, you know, in his mind, there are women you eff and women you take home to Mom. He loves Amal’s credentials and see her as wife material. The others before were just playthings, until he realized his image needed an upgrade and he found Amal. I don’t think he’s madly in love with her but I don’t think he would be with anybody, he’s in love with himself. But she fits the bill in his mind to be his wife. and like others have said, her career, etc. makes her a great wife if he wants to go into politics. She looks good on paper and she will let him be the star so it works.

      • azula says:

what remains wrong in the world: that good girl/bad girl dichotomy. treat a lady like a whore and a whore like a lady. so SICK of it.

  12. noway says:

I hate to say this, but he needs to stop selling the wife and start selling the movie. Tomorrowland had a very disappointing weekend so far, and if it doesn’t do well overseas it might not break even. The thing about movies now is they have such a short life in the theaters. First weekend numbers really do mean a lot, as they pull them out early if they are not up to snuff. This movie is projecting 20% less than anticipated, a pretty bad weekend. George may not get many more opportunities if he doesn’t come up with a better movie, either award worthy or box office. The last few movies he has either carried or directed have kind of pooped out. (Not counting Gravity as that really was Sandra Bullock) Unless his intent is to become a Karadashian type celebrity, he better rethink this type of publicity as I think the wife selling has really hurt. Also Disney and Tequila don’t really mix, stop wearing the shirt to some of these events!!!!!

  13. BNA FN says:

I have not seen Brad and Angelina wearing a Jolie Pitt and Perrin wine TShirt. I have heard their wine is a great wine and is selling very good.

George needs to stop with that ugly Tequila TShirt, not becoming. Btw, I believe AC is an attractive woman, I cannot see the pretty that some others are talking about. IMO, George is really putting down all the other women he has slept with over the years, shame on him for saying some of the things he has said. We know he’s madly in love but don’t put down others to bring AC up, jmo.

    • CG says:

I saw the Miraval rose in my neighborhood package store Friday. Thought about picking up a bottle but didn’t, just because I’m cheap and I usually don’t spend more than like $12 for anything that isn’t champagne. But maybe I’ll shell out the $22.99 or whatever it was for the Miraval! And then I’ll probably love it and end up having to spend twice as much on one bottle as I do now.

ETA: I actually love Amal’s dress but not the shoes with it. Clooney looks like a bum. And I have no plans to see Tomorrowland.

  14. mememe says:

Het clothes always look stupid. And he looks like a bum.

  15. Belle Epoch says:

Has anybody seen the movie? I read the synopsis at themoviespoiler.com and it sounded terrible in writing.

    • Jayna says:

My sister and her kids saw it and loved it. I didn’t really ask any questions about it, though.

  16. judyjudyjudy says:

I totally love it – it is perfect on her – and it put some much needed weight on her.

Missoni is NEVER dated. The only people who believe in fashion being in and out are corporations pushing sales and the suckers who waste their money.

    • Jayna says:

I agree. I love Missoni, and this actually looks good on her.

      George’s dad/mom jeans are a travesty. LOL

  17. jamrock says:

    Clooney is a joke

  18. Cody says:

All I can say about her outfit is hammer toe.

  19. siri says:

I don’t like the dress, but wouldn’t call it tragic. It adds a little volume to her skinny body, just the fabric&colors remind me of something we wore in the 70s, knitted. It seems that Tokyo is the first premiere abroad she accompanies him to- I don’t think she was in Spain/China with him. I’m a bit tired of these two, and wish they would just do their thing without the constant exaggerations. But obviuosly, they didn’t get the memo, so nothing changed, and the PR machine is rolling further.

  20. Heathering says:

I actually quite like the dress (NOT the shoes) – for an early summer day event. For a flight/airport arrival, No.

I get that she knew there would be paps (usually she’s called them so at least she was saved the bother this time) but there is a way to do a post flight style that isn’t overdone like this.

The only style statement I get from this is try hard needy and attention seeking.

Whatever theory you follow on the ‘marriage’ itself, it’s hard not to think a big % of her ‘love’ motivations weigh down on the shallow end of pooling together as a ‘couple’.

  21. patricia says:

this one is cute…for a day relaxing at some luxurious beach club at the Hamptons. I just can’t believe someone would dress like this for a transoceanic flight, is just not possible. Attention w….e

  22. Nimbolicious says:

Yeah, Out of Sight……I wish they BOTH were, for God’s sake.

  23. Tough Cookie says:

“She does like Michael Clayton because there’s a lawyer in it.”

I don’t know why but thinking about George saying this cracks me up.

  24. crtb says:

Grandpa jeans and old lady crochet dress – SMH

  25. crtb says:

Grandpa jeans and old lady crochet dress – 🙁

  26. Miran says:

Crocheted clothing other than sweaters (and arguably those too) should have been left in the 70s or thrown in a pile and burned.

    • nicole says:

George is wearing the same levi 501s that were last fashionable in 1988, and his tacky casamigos t-shirts. This look does nothing for him, please get a stylist and upgrade your wardrobe, you look terrible.

  27. raincoaster says:

Missoni has been sad for the last ten years, but this is actually very pretty. No hate for that dress. The clodhoppers on her feet, however, need to go.

  28. dubya says:

Maybe she wears those shoes because she thinks they make her look skinnier. That’s the only reason that makes sense, because the shoes are not nice and she obviously values skinny. Regarding the relationship, I get no “in love” vibes from either one. The relationship seems like an arranged marriage that they are both happy with and waiting to grow into. I don’t believe Clooney in constitutionally able to consider a woman in any capacity, marital or otherwise, without objectifying her. His male chauvinism seems to run pretty darn deep and she is clearly meant to be a trophy wife.

    • siri says:

You nailed it: she’s like an Academy Award to him- look, I’ve got this, isn’t it beautiful? It’s very visible in photos where he leads her around, putting her in the right position to be seen. But also when he says things like: “She has to get some guy out of jail.”, or “It’s impressive when she’s wearing a robe, isn’t it?” It’s very simple, she’s the prize he considers he earned, and she doesn’t object. Generally speaking, that kind of arrangement can last long. The only question is, for how long the public/his &her peers are willing to buy into this, and before he becomes a joke on a much bigger scale than before.
